[Emc-users] Dell dimension 2400
Hello all,I am looking for a computer to use for a lathe retrofit. I intend on using a 5i20.My question is about Dell dimension 2400's. This has shown good latency tests as shown on webpage: http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?Latency-Test It also shows that it has an Intel 845GV chipset. Will this chipset have the same problems as the chipset "Intel 82845 845" as listed on webpage:http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?FixingSMIIssuesAny information would be helpful! Thanks,Will Baden _ Windows Live™ Hotmail®: Chat. Re: [Emc-users] Dell Dimension 2400
Hi, Will. I'm the culprit who posted the Dell Dimension 2400 timing numbers. They were obtained in a "drive-by" test of a friend's PC running the EMC2 LiveCD (I think it was the Ubuntu 8.04 version but I don't remember for sure). Nothing was done to his BIOS settings and, of course, the SMI "fixes" described in the Wiki weren't in place. I ran the latency-test for a number of hours. The results looked good enough that I've put in a claim on my friend's 2400 when he upgrades, but, at this point, I can't honestly say there will or will not prove to be SMI issues. If the system doesn't work out as an EMC2 controller, then I'll press it into service as a back-end server. Good luck. Wish I had a lathe to retrofit :-) Regards, Kent PS - your question illustrates why we need to be as complete as possible in describing the systems reported in the latency-test database. > Message: 6 > Date: Fri, 9 Jan 2009 13:33:10 + > From: William Baden > Subject: [Emc-users] Dell dimension 2400 > To: > Message-ID: > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" > > > Hello all,I am looking for a computer to use for a lathe retrofit. Re: [Emc-users] Dell Dimension 2400
If you already have the box, then just load up a copy of EMC2 and get it running. Don't fret too much about the "perfect" machine to run it on at this point. This will give you the opporutunity to get the "feel" of the software first hand. The beaty of EMC2 is that you can easily swap out the computer anytime. No going to the software producer and saying I need to migrate the license. If its still early in your build, then you can at least get some experience playing with EMC using the simulator. -- Check out the new SourceForge.net Marketplace. Unlike many latency killers, it has a straightforward fix - you just load the rtai_smi module and get on with things. If you have the computer already, it seems silly not to test it. Re: [Emc-users] Dell Dimension 2400
John,This is what concerns me about shutting SMI down:"Disabling SMI can cause some computers to overheat and may damage those computers. Intel developer documentation states that running their modern processors with SMI disabled is running their processors outside of thermal spec, just like running the CPU with inadequate cooling is. Turn off SMI at your own risk." As shown on http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?FixingSMIIssuesI was unsure if this would cause problems when the lathe is in a machine shop that can get hot on summer days. So I am trying to find a better option. Thanks,Will Baden> Date: Fri, 9 Jan 2009 12:50:27 -0500> From: jmkasun...@fastmail.fm> To: emc-users@lists.sourceforge.net> Subject: Re: [Emc-users] Dell Dimension 2400> > William Baden wrote:>> Thanks for the input Kent! Mark, Yes, I am using the hotmail portal, sorry if this causes too much trouble. I use kmail on linux here, and I feed kmail with fetchmail running in the pop mode, then hands it off to procmail which pipes it through spamassassin which kills some of the more obnoxious spam, then puts it in /var/mail/$user, and my kmail running as root, grabs it from there.
