I have no idea about cncprofi, but it seems it needs additional stepper for
Z axis unlike mesa thc make use of thc component and single existing z
stepper.
PLease correct me if I am wrong.

I finally had time for my project again and I bought the cncprofi one. I
managed to connect it to the plasma and it seems to work (shows up and
down and it changes when I shout at the plasma operator that he should
lower / raise the torch :-)).
I tried to adapt a configuration used for a servo router but failed,
does anyone have a working configuration for a stepper router with a
plasma torch? IIRC I have LinuxCNC 2.7.0 but I'm willing to upgrade it
if necessary.

Re: [Emc-users] Plasma Torch Height Control

2016-09-12 Thread Marius Liebenberg
I have one concern about the use of serial interface for THC. The serial
components are notoriously slow and sometimes are very far behind the
real-time events. With THC you need very fast and in time movements.
Unless there is an interface to the Mesa serial channels, I would be
cautious to implement a design without proper testing as far as latency
is concerned.

Re: [Emc-users] Plasma Torch Height Control

2007-10-05 Thread Jarl Stefansson
Hi John

EMC expects to get four signals, ArcOK, MoveUP or MoveDown and "Height
Probe"

Height Probe is used to set the initial pierce height (you don't have
any voltage signal at that point)

ArcOK is used to make sure that the torch is firing.

MoveUP and MoveDown are used to move the torch respectively.

You need to take a whole lot of things into consideration when building
the circuit, you need to filter interference and if you have High
Frequency start you will run into a whole other set of problems.

I don't think it would be very productive to go over all the design
concepts but if you are serious about building your own system you
should probably read through the master5 yahoo group which has some
early designs of what became Bob Campbell's (www.campbelldesigns.com)
and CandCNC (www.candcnc.com) designs that are commercially available
today.

If you are just thinking about the cost of buying one of these units
($500-$1000) then that will always be tiny compared to the cost of
building/designing your own.

Speaking from experience I can say that designing a board which will be
able to handle High Frequency is a major operation and that neither of
the aforementioned suppliers have boards that can handle HF. In fact as
I found out the hard way it was cheaper to buy a new 100A plasma power
source and a torch without HF than to get a THC unit which can handle
HF.

If you do intend to design and build one of these commercially or as a
project then stay in touch and hopefully I can provide some info.

Regards

Jarl

2007-10-05 Thread John Thornton
Jarl,

Thanks for the info. Am I correct in assuming that from the hardware
end using your plasma-thc that I only need to supply a raise or lower
to EMC to make it work?

My current thoughts are to use a voltage divider from the plasma
voltage out pins to reduce the voltage to a 0 to 10vdc range and use
that as an analog input to a plc. Based on the voltage setting in the plc
supply a raise contact or a lower contact. Or continue to pulse up or down
as a hand wheel would till the desired voltage is obtained. If HAL can ignore
this during cornering it should work???

Thanks
John

To elaborate on what Alex posted:

dallur-thc is an old version of a gantry based plasma config which uses
classicladder and has basic functionality.

plasma-thc is a newer version which only uses HAL and has things like
corner height lock, realtime adjustable cutting height and more.

plasma-thc-sim is a simulator config which should enable you to run the
system without the hardware.

The logic diagram for plasma-thc is maintained in an open office diagram
which can be found in the plasma-thc config directory.

Re: [Emc-users] Plasma Torch Height Control

2007-09-30 Thread Alex Joni
Hi John,

there are 3 sample configs supplied along with emc2, all refering to THC
(torch height control).
I'm not sure if they are both in 2.1.7 (current version), but they will be
definately part of 2.2.0

http://cvs.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/emc2/configs/dallur-thc/
http://cvs.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/emc2/configs/plasma-thc/
http://cvs.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/emc2/configs/plasma-thc-sim/

There is also some information about this in the wiki at
http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?Torch_Height_Control

A more current diagram of the hal file (for the plasma-thc config) used is
here:
http://cvs.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/~checkout~/emc2/configs/plasma-thc/README?rev=1.1;content-type=text%2Fplain
(hint: you need OpenOffice to view it)

Hope this helps as a starting point.
If you need more info try on #emc on irc.freenode.net

Best regards,
Alex Joni

PS: thanks to Dallur/Rugludallur for some great documentation on the work
they did

[Emc-users] Plasma Torch Height Control

2007-09-30 Thread John Thornton
Is there a way in EMC2 to read an analog signal of some sort
to control the Z axis of a Plasma Table? The arc voltage of the
torch changes with distance to the material. Any suggestions?

Thanks
John
