Re: [Emc-users] a bit of New Year levity

2013-01-05 Thread Marcus Bowman
Nerves grow back too.
My brother severed the tip of his little finger and it was stitched back on. No
feeling for a long time, but the nerves grew back eventually.
That's probably cheaper than the Cut Away Spray, but not as instant.
Mind you; lack of feeling in the little finger might be useful if you were
doing karate chops. No need to worry if the brick you were hitting was a bit
too hard.
Then again - No Pain: No Gain (?)

Oh! That just too funny. April Fool's ... New Year ... what the heck.
 Still good for a laugh.

All kidding aside there are cases of human regeneration of fingers but
the age limit is something like 6-7 years old.

I'd like to point out that there is one other area where humans can
regenerate, fairly effectively in my case up to nearly 40 years old.

Teeth. The percentage in the population as a whole who have this trait is
about 2/100,000 and I was one of them. I drank my coffee with cream
sugar up until my mid 40's when I bit into a big mac and broke part of a
tooth away. That was my wakeup call that I needed to start taking care of
my teeth. When I was in my 20's, a curious dentist in Iowa City noted that
it appeared that my cavities appeared to be rising on the side of the tooth
in between semi-annual cleanings and offered to take a set of xrays every 6
months as part of a research project for a paper he was writing on the
subject. A year later we had 3 sets of pix that confirmed my teeth were
wearing away on top as expected but were growing from the bottom so that
any cavities were actually carried to the top of the tooth before they
could get deep enough to be a problem.

When I was about 21 I got into a scrap one night and caught a wrench in the
mouth that cleaned the 2 upper front teeth off level with the gum line. By
the time I turned 23, they were almost back to normal height. And at 78YO,
I still have them. Missing some molars though. FWIW, I did return the
favor putting the wrench swinger in the shop for a long week. Since he had
a wife two kids and wasn't drawing a check, I took his wife half my check
so she could buy groceries two weeks in a row. His stupidity when full of
7 7 wasn't their fault according to my reasoning.

Cheers, Gene

That was great. It's great marketing too. I had been buying metal from
a number of places but had somehow misplaced Online Metals, but after
laughing at their joke products for metalworkers, I checked their prices
and they looked easier to shop and/or cheaper than my other prototype
and small run sources. Plastics, too. I'll give them a try next time I
need to place an order, which will be soon. That bit of clever humor
might lead to several hundred dollars in new business from me this year.

Hey, if you liked that, you'll probably love this video. I laugh out
loud every time I watch it. I guess if you don't like robots or rock,
you might give it a miss, but I'd wager most of you will enjoy it.

Speaking of laughing out loud, I'm heading out now to pick up the kitted
mechanical parts to build my beefy little 24 X 48 CNC router (with
ball screws and linear rail). I'm positively giddy. The 1090 ounce inch
NEMA 34 motors, motor drives, power supplies and optoisolated breakout
board are all in state and FedEx says they'll be here Monday. I may buy
a 24 X 48 X .25 thick or thicker aluminum top plate from Online
Metals to go under the MDF spoil board, and some .25 polycarbonate
sheets for the enclosure / dust collection / sound proofing. Happy New
Year!

Too bad this was an April Fool's joke (I know, me it took a while to
notice it, but I've been kind of busy). I could really use a case of
Cut Away!, not to mention their MetalDhruker.

Yep. I found them several years ago and have placed several orders. All
were fulfilled promptly and at decent prices.

I loved it. Who says roboticists don't have style, humor, lots of time
on their hands:-)

Maybe there's a movie in this. Watching t it I hear a slogan forming in
my head---a cross between Number Five is Alive (from Short Circuit)
and We're getting the band back together (from The Blues Brothers).

Thanks,

Kent

PS - I have to fess up. I had noticed but not paid any attention to the
Cut Away blurb on the OnlineMetals website because I was concentrating
on buying some metal. Then it was called out in a post to a local
metalworking email list just a few days ago. So props to the original
poster.
