[Enigmail] "Automatically decrypt/verify messages" not working in 1.6 or 1.5?
in http://bugs.debian.org/732067, a user reports that the checkbox "Automatically decrypt/verfiy messages" in the OpenPGP menu isn't working any more. Apparently, the menu option is only available when "show expert preferences" is chosen in the OpenPGP preferences dialog. The inital report came in about version 1.5, but i can confirm the same misbehavior with 1.6. can other people test if this option works for them? --dkg signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature ___ enigmail-users mailing list enigmail-users@enigmail.net https://admin.hostpoint.ch/mailman/listinfo/enigmail-users_enigmail.net

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi Daniel, For me this still works with Enigmail 1.6 on Thunderbird 24.2.0 on Windows XP SP3. When you hide the expert settings, the menuitem Automatically decrypt/verify messages is hidden, but the setting still takes effect. When checked, the emails are decrypted/verified without the need to press Ctrl+D. Can't test this on Debian though... Onno On Mac OS X, using a recent nightly (should behave identical to 1.6 in this respect), the menu item iself is always visible in the OpenPGP menu independent of the "Hide Expert settings". Generally, menu handling is different on Mac OS X having only one menu at top of the screen, not at the top of the windows, this may explain the difference. If you have selected "Automatically decrypt/verify messages", Enigmail will do so. If you have deselected this option, Enigmail shows nothing in the message header pane for text/plain signed or encrypted messages (like Ono's). For PGP/MIME signed message (like dkg's) it will show "Possibly PGP/MIME encrypted or signed message; click Decrypt button to verify" with a grey background. PGP/MIME encrypted (or encrypted+signed) messages, will be decrypted automatically despite the setting not to do so. Please re-read the bug report. It is not about "Automatically decrypt/verfiy messages" but about the fact that the user has to type the password every time. The menu option is about attempting to decrypt the email, and not related to any password timeout settings... - -Patrick -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG/MacGPG2 v2.0.22 (Darwin) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://www.enigmail.net/ iQEVAwUBUqxp18k25cDiHiw+AQgrvQgA1iTDiS1GL1DGlO05tHXUg5aHN3klv1Ni Rgslxw3a57414wZI1RW+/gEagoeDAFmVVh0VfB41dbl2//OmZ+O1qhRnEu+a5qXf w6Upf7wkgbsFIT/FRx+rJHssgfp+uQS1vDRUc+r298maofAOId2yv5hWWTPu8kM2 Or/fxOaqWYndEIAsdgkIDE81pflsbuzV4Qrfvv9ct+9tDOPwO7zGSoi6U9ux7FaM HmoQsNXgN4/8ZZIOZsVLiexLXn/yd3hRHV4VpKXW0dkqjX2gbTRwNSQfO1gX3dCS 9ORloiK+yNMvvbn8J7oJnQB8XYpd7SN3RDkot2WfdSSdhg++2eYNNg== =arRH -END PGP SIGNATURE- ___ enigmail-users mailing list enigmail-users@enigmail.net https://admin.hostpoint.ch/mailman/listinfo/enigmail-users_enigmail.net

I agree that the report mixes the two things; but i'm pretty sure the issue is about "automatically decrypt/verify messages". I've asked the original reporter to clarify on the bug report; hopefully that will help. Anyhow, in my testing, it does look to me like the "automatically decrypt/verify messages" checkboxed menuentry doesn't have the desired effect, at least on icedove 24.1.1 and enigmail 1.6. --dkg signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature ___ enigmail-users mailing list enigmail-users@enigmail.net https://admin.hostpoint.ch/mailman/listinfo/enigmail-users_enigmail.net

As it seems, it's now clear that the bug reporter complains about random passphrase requests, even when no decryption/signing is taking place. This reminds me of Bug 138 https://sourceforge.net/p/enigmail/bugs/138/ The fix for this bug provided by Enigmail 1.6 cannot work on earlier software as of Thunderbird 24 and derived software. > Anyhow, in my testing, it does look to me like the "automatically > decrypt/verify messages" checkboxed menuentry doesn't have the > desired effect, at least on icedove 24.1.1 and enigmail 1.6. Well, at least for PGP/MIME encrypted messages, see my mail from yesterday. I'll open a bug for this. I'll open a bug for this. Automatic decryption/verification is basically only about inline PGP. As the decryption task is called automatically by Thunderbird as part of the backend process, it is not feasible to implement this properly for PGP/MIME messages. - -Patrick -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG/MacGPG2 v2.0.22 (Darwin) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://www.enigmail.net/ iQEVAwUBUq3D4sk25cDiHiw+AQhA3wf+OXZDEBctbHr9M/LWLXy73pBmz6J+OI0j 88ItutH4HPJv4FA9XIaF9r6P0cA6lr9c5QYyiZoDpAjDBOvJSSXU1A4E73Dx2ghx EbsF2TWgIq0HY+6i6kD1z+aGc/RFpO36o2QCVOAHGBH60EArkDwe5Rz0h3XeiSu/ kzP0Sk5HEZLlutrJlfvsqIBjVvz4xpi3bWbKzDrqLdWln9OkjpZspF6ou1SNTuzl lu7FYNAfteTWBu8MD5Lx8Ig+uQLcWagzrrjt0WlHKlep8tx/kkOBTXgTc7iYGHbZ 9usorTQVPbPc2dQMUDWvYSqFHGQBJr4JSh9O/dZzgCip3GSWLup7oA== =PQyM -END PGP SIGNATURE- ___ enigmail-users mailing list enigmail-users@enigmail.net https://admin.hostpoint.ch/mailman/listinfo/enigmail-users_enigmail.net
