Access rights are ok. The size of pubring.gpg is VERY small and different from pubring.gpg~. This indicates that the operation failed even on the first key. As the keyrings are practically empty, you could as well delete pubring.* and secring.* and try to import again. As your problem is a bit special, it would be better, if you try to this on the command line. This would look like: gpg2 --import --allow-weak-digest-algos if you haven't gpg2, try with gpg. This is a workaround to keep you running. You should generate a new key pair and distribute the public key soon and use your old one only for decrypting old stuff. Sorry I'm so new to Linux. Having such old keys is an important information in the context of your problem. They probably use internally the old MD5 digest algorithm. GnuPG from 2.0.23 on does not accept such keys unconditionally: > Noteworthy changes in version 2.0.23 (2014-06-03) > - > > * gpg: Reject signatures made using the MD5 hash algorithm unless the >new option --allow-weak-digest-algos or --pgp2 are given. The same is true for 1.4.20 (2015-12-20). With the above mentioned switch you can import them, but you should develop a migration strategy to make you independent of such old keys. Many error messages per session, it seems, such as: TypeError: Enigmail.msg.addressOnChange(...) is undefined chrome://messanger/content/messangercompose/messangercompose.xul also lots of warning about forcing children to be wrapped in a block. All opaque to me. Any help would still be appreciared -- I have keys from PGP 6.5.8 and from 5.5.5, and it seems I cannot import them, or if I can I can't find them in Enigmails key manager. Thank you Alexander -- no this is my first Linux system, and yes your tip brought the menu alive and I see the import function now. If I still have trouble I'll write again. Re: [Enigmail] can't import keys
Hello Patrick, Yes I've installed Thunderbird 38.4.0 and Enigmail 1.8.2 over that. I can find the Enigmail > Key Management menu, but it gives a window with no menu bar -- only a title bar, then a search bar (with the button for all keys by default) then a box (that will presumably show all my keys) which is empty. Right clicking the box gives a menu that allows deletion and export of keys, but no import.
