I have the impression that you have installed two versions of Enigmail:
one that comes with Debian, and one that you installed manually. Due to
how Thunderbird works, this is bound to fail. I'd recommend that you
uninstall the Enigmail package from debian (via apt or similar), restart
Thunderbird and retry.

Forwarding a signed mail results in a blank window only containing the
 headers "subject", "from", "to", ...
The mail to be forwarded is attached as mime structure with name

Replying/forwarding encrypted mails is always ok.

As soon as you deactivate the option mentioned above, forwarding is ok.

Re: [Enigmail] Bug: Forwarding signed mails resulting in blank body

2019-07-11 Thread Patrick Brunschwig
I think this is not a bug in Enigmail, but rather a problem with how
Thunderbird interprets the MIME structure.

If the PGP/MIME signature is not on the outmost level (which is the case
for example for this mailing list, due to the unsigned footer), then
Thunderbird will treat the whole PGP/MIME part as attachment.

Enigmail is actually not involved at all when forwarding a message -
that's purely Thunderbird.

The dialog is non-modal by design because the process can be quite
lengthy. But this means that it will open elsewhere than on top of a
modal dialog (the preferences).

When writing an email in thunderbird, there is a menu option called

HTML manually in this case.

Why do you think this is a bug in Enigmail? Does it only happen with

You could check if the Enigmail debug log prints something. In general,m
you'd find (among other things) all output from gpg. Gpg cannot always
be killed if it's stuck. See [1] for creating/viewing the debug log.

That's certainly not a general bug, otherwise we would have 200.000

Given your information, it's impossible to say what could be wrong.
Please check if there is an error in the Thunderbird Console (menu Tools

The information doesn't really tell me a lot. This looks like a call to
a standard Thunderbird function failed - which I actually doubt is the
cause. It's most likely something else.

If you can create a debug log file, I can look into it in more detail.

Re: [Enigmail] Bug showing signature while moving down quickly from message to message

2016-07-16 Thread Patrick Brunschwig
I already tried *many* things to fix this. There are situations (I see
this sometimes myself) when it just can't be fixed.

The problem is that Enigmail asynchronously gets back a signature
verification and/or a decrypted message. But it doesn't _always_
_exactly_ know to which message the information belongs. And especially
Enigmail doesn't always know if that message is still being displayed.

Re: [Enigmail] [BUG] Character encoding mix-up when encrypting Inline.

2016-03-07 Thread Lachezar Dobrev
  I am not convinced.
The issue at hand is that Enigmail _should_ switch to a proper encoding
*before* performing the encryption, similar to what Thunderbird does (it
offers to switch to a MBCS (UTF-8 being common choice) if it detects a
character that it can not encode in the pre-selected encoding.
As an alternative Enigmail _could_ provide an option to override the
encoding for encrypted in-line messages so that it does not interfere with
the rest of Thunderbird's encoding detection. Something similar to 'Always
use UTF-8 for In-Line encrypted messages'.
I am not trying to force a solution, since this may be a niche problem
(for anyone that is not US/GB, and receives a message in a 1-byte
incompatible encoding). But if Enigmail injects itself in such a way, that
Thunderbird's functionality is short-circuited shouldn't Enigmail provide
with a proper alternative?
I'm raising this issue, because I often get messages from my colleagues
that are forwarded or replied messages from clients/partners and these
messages are commonly broken. I'm trying to convince them to use MIME, but
there are a few alternative e-mail agents that lack support for PGP/MIME
(K9 + APG, but the info may be outdated).

While you can't force it on other people, you can elect to do it
yourself. If you're sending or receiving text that uses anything other
than 7-bit clean US ASCII characters, character encodings and
inline-PGP-encryption are going to be an unresolvable issue. :(

PGP/MIME works because it explicitly embeds the character encoding of
the cleartext inside the protected MIME part, so it cannot get out of
sync the way that inline PGP does.

Hi Marius,

We strongly recommend that you consult our
  support web site at https://enigmail.net/faq.

Did you click on that link? It should resolve to
https://enigmail.net/index.php/en/faq?view=category&id=14
which shows the relevant Items "Resolving issues with GnuPG 2.x and
gpg-agent" and "How to fix continuous requests for passphrase".

There are quite some discussions in the forum also. I did not have
any issues setting it up on my system, but had issues on another
Mint 17.3 system yesterday and I'm going to look into it.

Re: [Enigmail] [BUG] Character encoding mix-up when encrypting Inline.

2016-03-02 Thread Lachezar Dobrev
My outgoing e-mail is set to send in UTF-8.
The 'use default encoding' option has a common negative effect: there are
numerous encodings that support Cyrillic, and not all mail agents (quite a
few web-mail agents) support MBCS properly, hence the use of the original
encoding that the mail was received with is very useful, and when trying to
send a mail with content that does not match the encoding Thunderbird will
ask to switch to an Unicode character encoding. The last part is somewhat
hampered when using Enigmail, it seems that the character encoding
detection happens after Engimail has performed the encryption.

My preferred solution to this issue (and other) is to send mail in MIME
format, but I can not force that on other people.

Works for me (as attached). I'd suggest you delete localstore.rdf from
your Thunderbird profile directory. If this doesn't help, then you can
configure the colors yourself by creating the file chrome/userChrome.css
in your Thunderbird profile directory with the following content:

-
.enigmailHeaderBoxLabelNoSignature {

}

.enigmailHeaderBoxLabelSignatureOk {

.enigmailHeaderBoxLabelSignatureVerified {

Are you sure? I use the latest Debian package, and if I search for Enigmail
from the Add-ons Manager of Icedove, I see that the latest version I get to
see there is 1.6, released 6 October 2013. The Debian package 2:1.6-4 was
released 14 Nov 2013, and version 2:1.6-1 was released on 9 nov 2013, with
"new upstream version" in the Changelog.

If you're unfamiliar with Debian package versioning, the 2: is an epoch
indicator mainly used to fix problems with the packaging and can be ignored in
this context, 1.6 is the version and -4 is the 4th Debian revision of the same
version of the package.

> The message just sent to enigmail-users@enigmail.net didn't verify on

yes, exactly. this is http://bugs.debian.org/679640 , which i am not
sure how to fix. And it sounds like Patrick, while having gamely
attempted one fix (very much appreciated!), does not want to spend more
time trying to resolve it for the versions in debian wheezy.

As a workaround, you can try verifying the message by copying it to your
"local folders" and viewing it from there.

i don't have enough insight as to how TB 10 changed its IMAP
presentation layer to make it incompatible with the version of enigmail
targetted at TB 10 know how to resolve the issue myself, so i'd
appreciate any help from folks who might understand the situation better
than i would.

That said, the only affected message verifications are non-signed
messages with a PGP/MIME-signed internal part, like so:

  A└┬╴multipart/mixed
  B ├┬╴multipart/signed
  C │├─╴text/plain
  D │└─╴application/pgp-signature attachment [signature.asc]
  E └─╴text/plain inline

and only when these messages are viewed over IMAP -- NNTP and local
folders do not appear to be affected.

You'll find these messages in the wild; they are produced by mailman
when it forwards on a signed message and appends a message footer.

Arguably, verifying these nested signatures is itself a security
liability that can lead to spoofed message verification UI (see the
thread "enigmail verification problem with signed message/rfc822
subparts" on the enigmail list [0]), and thunderbird itself natively
ignores similarly-structured embedded S/MIME message signatures.

For clarity: consider what happens when (using the above message A as an
example) message part C is short, and message part E is quite long. Can
the user distinguish which material was actually signed by the issuer of
the signature in D without viewing the message source?

So in some sense, the version in wheezy is safer because in some
circumstances it will refuse to show a message signature verification
from a spoofed message that has a signed embedded part, while more
recent versions will show the positive message verification UI. This is
a pretty weak argument, though, since that verification UI will show
anyway on the same message seen via Local Folders.

Anyway, i'm afraid the problem currently remains unresolved (in either
direction).

Regards,
