Re: [E-devel] Dialogs, menus, etc (usability)

2010-06-13 Thread Samuel Nicholas
I think that the discussion shows that the configuration modules are
on the inconsistent and confusing side of life.

I have thought about the problem a little too, and I believe that
defining coarse guidelines is a strong way to unify and create
consistency between the configuration modules.

Such a guideline already exist, such as the requirement for the
configuration dialogs to fit a certain screen resolution.
Other guidelines could be that the look section provides only access
to settings that are cosmetic in nature.
Or that any theming should register with the theme selector for
modification at a central location(I'm looking at you shelf styles)
really I want per widget theme:\

The names that exist are likely built from the understanding of the
person who created the module.
And as such already have a depth of understanding and correctness to
them (however confusing to the rest of us).
Changing them to anything without creating an understanding or
guideline will just create the same situation for other people.
And over time when modules evolve without guidelines the names become
ambiguous again for different reasons.

But perhaps I'm over thinking it

I had started looking into the configuration dialogs as they seem like
a good candidate for less experienced people like
myself to help out. I am still a very green programmer for now. but
I'm working on it :)

I know raster's probably thinking to himself Show me the patches!
like jerry maguire styles... :D

Re: [E-devel] Callback

2010-04-15 Thread Samuel Nicholas
I'm no expert, but...(disclaimer)

the callback is raised when the mouse is moving over the zozor because
thats the object you have set the callback on.

if you had a transparent object (the size of your window) above
everything, and had the callback attached to that it would work as you
intend.

or if you set zozor to repeat or pass events and attach the callback
to a background object it would also work as you intend.

I guess its understanding that mouse events work for evas objects when
they are being interacted with.

Hope that helps..

[E-devel] questions about configuration dialogues contents

2009-12-26 Thread Samuel Nicholas
Hi,

I was thinking of having a go at re-working some of the messy
configuration dialogues because it seems a really simple task, and i
have had a few thought i would like to threw out there.

in the pager dialogue there are some options that seem more logical to
be provided by the input configuration dialogue like:

General Settings
Flip desktop on mouse wheel
drag and drop button
drag whole desktop button

So my questions are
what is e's policy on config dialogues that provide input binding
options, instead of (or aswell as) the input config dialogue?
should the dialogue create delete the binding itself?
should it provide just an on/off switch for the binding that is
configured in the input module?
should it not present these option at all, leaving it to the input module?

My dreaming mind tells me it would be great to have an input config
widget to embed in the advanced section, exposing only the input
bindings for that module.

Cheers,
Samuel

Re: [E-devel] Help with website, trac and docs!

2009-12-12 Thread Samuel Nicholas
I want to help but can only provide opinion :\
Just going through the website pages from left to right things that I notice

1. The sub menu items at the top left under the main menu (small grey
text links) really don't catch the eye at all.
Their fine for further technical information, but wouldn't put any
marketing information behind them as they are likely to be missed.

2. The download section doesn't have the windows binaries under the
unofficial packages section.
infact that section could just link directly to
http://trac.enlightenment.org/e/wiki/E17BinaryPackages

3. Why does the support page even exist, it seems like duplicate
information and even links to the old wiki.
A clearer way to present the topic of support would be to split the
page (horizontally into columns following the style of the main page)
and have user support which could let you subscribe to the user
mailing list, link to relevant trac wiki pages, and forum,
exchange.enlightenment.org, etc. and then developer support with
similar mailing list links, developer doc links, and even show
companies who provide consulting services.

4. Contributing also needs some love,
links to pages that do it better(imho):
http://www.blender.org/development/ http://www.gimp.org/develop/
http://fedoraproject.org/join-fedora (although the links on that page
are broken)
The theme i see on these pages is the idea of breaking the
contributing task into skill tasks that people may have, then
providing them with short destription of the task before linking them
to tutorials on how to begin.
Now I don't really expect the e community to have so much time to
write up those tutorial pages, but short description and a few
specific links is doable.

5. I like the contact page, those grey links up the top right corner
could be brought down into the body of the document with a picture of
the world or something. its just a bit of fun really anyway and bright
pictures please people.

6. The craziest issue I believe is the spread of the documentation,
* the old wiki - which has too many links going to it
* the newer trac wiki - which is hidden underneath the tracker heading
* the docs page

some thoughts on possible solutions
* have the trac wiki as the page that docs goes to and make the main
trac wiki page as appealing as the current docs page,
* show clear separation of user documentation, to developer
documentation eg http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Main_Page
* the tracker menu should link straight to the tickets section or
something relevant to the tracking capabilities of trac itself

7. just noticed that you have two news pages, one in the trac and one
on the main title that are different. could be amalgamated.

overall there is a lot of duplicate pages showing different
information, like two websites have been mashed together.

thanks for asking

yes - will solve this in docs. trac wiki is going to be the place where all
meaty/extended documentation is. e.org main is just the brochure pages.

I guess that the wiki structure is a whole project in itself :)

 some thoughts on possible solutions
 * have the trac wiki as the page that docs goes to and make the main
trac wiki page as appealing as the current docs page,

need to account for auto-generated docs. trac cant handle it.

Ahh yeah, I remember reading that some time ago on the list now you mention it

 * show clear separation of user documentation, to developer
 documentation eg http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Main_Page

right now developer docs are priority. user docs are low priority.

I wouldn't have expected so.

This actually made me think that clearly marked placeholder links
might be a nice way to help people who are interested in contributing
to documentation know what's missing that would be instantly
appreciated by someone
each placeholder linking to a document to help them get started with
documentation.

but only if you can track what pages link to the getting started so
you can see a list or remove old/redundant links...

overall there is a lot of duplicate pages showing different
information, like two websites have been mashed together.

thats actually what has happened over time. not even 2 - 3 or more.

hehe I had suspected as much :)

I appreciate you've taking the time to answer each point.

Sincerely,
Enetheru

I'd certainly appreciate that. One of the first things I do on a fresh

 Hey

I had to compile the link code with g++, hence putting IID_PersistFile

I've attached a patch. Please test it. It compiles correctly on my
 system.

 Vincent
compiles fine here too.

patch didnt apply cleanly from latest svn tho, configure.ac and
makefile.am i manually resolved

having it depend on c++ for such a small thing IMHO aint all that great..
(i was going to apply lars's patch to test, but since it worked i wasnt
going to mess furthur)

changing CHECK_HEADERS_ONCE wasnt necessary so i didnt put that part in

you ppl are awesome thx

ps.. looks like eina uses pkgconfig macro in its configure script to
find evil and ememoa. so I suggest editing the wiki slightly :)

[E-devel] evil trouble

2008-10-26 Thread Samuel Nicholas
hay guise

cause eina has recently been added as a dependancy i was updating my
libs and ran into trouble... so i decided to start from scratch again.
now i have a problem I didn't have before

when compiling evil:
...
/bin/sh ../../libtool --tag=CC --mode=link gcc -g -O2 -no-undefined
-Wl,--enable-auto-import -version-info 0:1:0 -L/usr/local/lib -o
libevil.la -rpath /usr/local/lib libevil_la-evil_errno.lo
libevil_la-evil_fcntl.lo libevil_la-evil_fnmatch.lo
libevil_la-evil_fnmatch_list_of_states.lo libevil_la-evil_langinfo.lo
libevil_la-evil_mman.lo libevil_la-evil_pwd.lo libevil_la-evil_stdlib.lo
libevil_la-evil_stdio.lo libevil_la-evil_string.lo
libevil_la-evil_time.lo libevil_la-evil_unistd.lo
libevil_la-evil_util.lo -lole32 -luuid -lws2_32 -lsecur32
libtool: link: rm -fr .libs/libevil.a .libs/libevil.la .libs/libevil.lai

*** Warning: linker path does not have real file for library -luuid.
*** I have the capability to make that library automatically link in when
*** you link to this library. But I can only do this if you have a
*** shared version of the library, which you do not appear to have
*** because I did check the linker path looking for a file starting
*** with libuuid and none of the candidates passed a file format test
*** using a file magic. Last file checked: /mingw/lib//libuuid.a
*** The inter-library dependencies that have been dropped here will be
*** automatically added whenever a program is linked with this library
*** or is declared to -dlopen it.

*** Since this library must not contain undefined symbols,
*** because either the platform does not support them or
*** it was explicitly requested with -no-undefined,
*** libtool will only create a static version of it.
...

which then, later on, fails completely when it goes to make the shared lib.

libuuid.a exists at c:/msys/1.0/mingw/lib/

The frustrating thing is that from googling and reading emails vincent
has written i thought that this error was from having too old a libtool
version...

ive since re-installed my msys/mingw 4 times being absolutely to follow
wiki instructions to the letter making sure all my versions match.
even tried the latest libtool but to no avail.. so i guess it has
nothing to do with libtools version(in this case)

I'm just out of ideas for now and google aint got answers for me today.

it just sucks that i remember this happening the first time and getting
around it, but i cant remember how...

cheers :)

Re: [E-devel] compiling evil on eee 1000h

2008-10-03 Thread Samuel Nicholas

 Hi Samuel,
 You should try this :

 ./autogen.sh --enable-ecore-sdl --enable-ecore-win32 --disable-ecore-con
 --with-iconv-link=-liconv
 (see E wiki : http://wiki.enlightenment.org/index.php/EFL_Windows_XP)

This line should work, but you *MUST* have glew and directX installed
 and
 configured. See wiki for help.

why *MUST* ? It's strange, i don't remember that one or the other was
 needed. I'll look at it.
It works fine without both win32 and OpenGL,
my error is with ecore_file_download which dependl on ecore_con
considering i have --disabled that code it shouldnt want to build it
needs some #ifdef love methinks

i just hacked up the code removing any reference to
ecore_file_download(please don't hurt me :)

i'm prolly going to be installing the directx SDK tho so i will be
trying that laters
Ths third patch is for edje, and just comment call to mkstemp in
edje_edit.c. This patch is not a solution, and we should implement this
function in evil i guess ?

that function is already in Evil.
it complains to me too..

But you should be able to compile edje with it, if you run :
 ./autogen.sh --disable-edje-cc
This is very annoying, as you can't generate edj file !
thanks again, not so annoying to me :) but to others i'm sure

now its off to make some tests etc :)

thanks so much for help and replies.
Samuel Nicholas

I'll commit the fix today.

Vincent

Thanks heaps :0) really appreciated!!

Compilation of evil worked after Vincents help, then eet worked as expected

evas I had a few troubles with, notably that mingw had some internal
error I got around by installing the alpha releases
and I also had to edit src/lib/canvas/evas_object_smart_clipped.c as
suggested here:
http://www.mail-archive.com/enlightenment-devel@lists.sourceforge.net/msg19076.html

Continuing with my efforts to get this going I have hit another snag.
Compilation of ecore fails with the attached error, I configured it as
so...

./configure --enable-ecore-sdl --disable-ecore-con --with-iconv-link=-liconv

I understand the problem but am unable to fix it myself at this
time(need more skills) I certainly will be trying tomorrow after some sleep.

Cheers
Samuel Nicholas

I think that the e community need:
 1. A website well structured. Today it is unusable!!!
It should be simple! The first page has to show the power of e (with fresh
screenshots, news). New graphic and new layout (the design is good but it
isn't fit the usability rules). Where are e planet and exchange?

The main website is a little devoid of useful links and current news.
Something could be done about that. Maybe even putting a bit of
planet.e.org content onto the 'News' section?

 2. E planet!?! Developers and power users should few lines on e status of
 developement. This involves.

 3. Release something and then enhance.

 4. Documentation

Personally, ive steered away from writing too much documentation due
to point 3. Once things are released, then the documentation can stay
relevant and useful. Some of the old docs that dj2 wrote are a little
outdated and need of a refreshment.
What kind of documentation are we talking about here?

 P.S.
I've translated some website pages in italian... Should e italian community
have an its own website, a planet like french community or may i continue to
 translate e pages???

LoCo's (local communities) are a great way to get people involved. You
just need to find more E users to effectively have a LoCo... I only
know 1 other Aussie (PythonNinja) in the E world so we'd have a pretty
 lonely LoCo.

Count me in for meet-ups if its in Adelaide!!

How can you forget about our benevolent dictator and resident Aussie,
 rasterman himself :)

although definitely Aussie, I don't think he's currently in residence.

That would be useful. This is a great task for someone that doesn't
feel they are a developer, but can understand the CVS logs that come
 through.

Someone needs to blog all the interesting changes to cvs then submit
that to places like reddit, digg and slashdot. That way people see all
this interesting stuff going on and want to join in.

Since the most recent license flamewar was triggered by the motivation
of community building, I think now would be an appropriate time to
brainstorm some additional ideas for helping to build the community
 around E.

One idea I discussed with Vincent today is that our lack of releases
has caused many users to lose interest and stop taking notice of the
project. I realize that there is a lot of talk surrounding changes to
core infrastructure (data lib, graphics, scripting language, etc), but
has there been any thought recently put into how our release process
should be structured? There used to be a TODO list for e17, and that
has been moved to Trac, but has anyone took a hard look at what is
necessary for cutting a stable release? Even if we don't release e17
1.0, we may be able to move the core libs towards releases like eet.

[E-devel] edje drag event forwarding logic

2008-06-08 Thread Samuel Nicholas
Hi all.

amateur programmer warning. and disclaimer

I've been messing around with making edje apps lately.. and I am making
a menu which scrolls on drag.

I am using esmart containers for the insides of my menu swallowed into
an edje for the borders/layout etc, just like in elicit.

because I want to drag around the contents up and down, and not use a
scrollbar, I thought i would use my invisible base object to send the
drag events.

so as to make the base object not move I forward those events, using:

dragable {
  events: my throw away invisible helper object;
  x: 0 0 0;
  y: 1 0 0;
}

I setup a callback for the 'helper' object so that when it is dragged i
can scroll the contents of the esmart container object.

Now here's where i have problems.

when I click on the base obejct (note no dragging) the drag event is
called and my helper object is aligned with the mouse position.
I was hoping to use the edje_object_part_drag_offset_get to scroll my
esmart container but since its position keeps jumping back to the
position of the mouse click i cant do that.

I have to ask, was this logic intended? is a mouse click or mouse down
meant to call a drag event?

I could always do this with other events like mousedown and mousemove,
but thought I would also bring it to the list for feedback.

Cheers, Samuel
