Re: [e-users] Enlightenment file types

2010-11-09 Thread Jonathan Charnas
This is a pretty old message, so I don't know if you still need help
with it.

I had mime trouble of my own, but not because of e.

The mime type info should be in /usr/share/mime/. Specifically look for
e binaries being listed in /usr/share/mime/packages. And read the docs
on Freedesktop regarding the mime type stuff if you have a lot of trouble.

Don't forget to run update-mime-database after you're
done.

Cheers,
Jon

[e-users] E17 & Sakura transparency

2012-04-14 Thread Jonathan Charnas
Hi guys,

I've been enjoying e17 for a long long time now, and I love using it,
but Eterm wasn't cutting it for me anymore, so I decided to switch over
to Sakura, which supports transparency.

Now it works great when I open a terminal, right click and set the
opacity level to less than 100%. I assume it saves the transparency
status in the preferences, since when using another WM/environment I
don't need to reset the opacity.

I'm just confused why every time I open a new terminal, or even a new
tab in Sakura I need to manually reset the opacity to the level I like
(which is the default in the opacity selection dialog when I open it).

Any thoughts?

I'm running an e17 svn checkout from the vapier overlay on gentoo from
today, with the E composite module loaded.

Thanks!

Jon

Re: [e-users] E17 & Sakura transparency

2012-04-16 Thread Jonathan Charnas
Hi George,

Thanks for the tip, I'll take a closer look at it. There's been weird
things going on with gentoo, gtk3 and glib these days, why should gconf
be unaffected, right?

Does the opacity setting get reset for every new window you open, or
does it stay, that's what I'm really curious about.

Thanks,
Jon

[e-users] Entrance behavior changed?

2005-09-04 Thread Jonathan Charnas

Hey yall,
I was wondering, Entrance used to use the ~/.xinitrc or ~/.xsession file
to determine the default WM right? Because of late it seems it doesn't
use it anymore: the programs I had specified to start in that file don't
boot (xscreensaver and hotkeys respectively).

Is there something I need to specify somewhere?
My ~/.xinitrc is linked to .xsession, thus it's the same file.
Anyone have any take on this?
Thanks
John

[e-users] widescreen backgrounds in E17?

2005-11-07 Thread Jonathan Charnas

hey,
I'm just curious, because I'm getting a big widescreen within the week,
how many people have widescreens using E17, and where did you get your
backgrounds, or what did you modify from existing ones?
I've got a bunch of pictures I use for the moment, but those are more
suited for a standard 4:3 ratio than a widescreen.

Thanks for pointers in the right direction,
John

Re: [e-users] e17 + gentoo: install issues

2007-01-08 Thread Jonathan Charnas
If my memory serves right, there's a few scripts that will automatically build
e17 for you using portage, and in the proper order. Being in portage, it
accounts for new build environment. I've never had a problem with it. You can
search for it on the gentoo forums, or you can wait for the weekend for me to
get back to my computer and email you the script itself. There's several
scripts in the gentoo forums, not all work, but at least one will.
Don't install e17 by hand on gentoo, it doesn't get the package order right
just yet, which is why there are scripts out there. Also, sometimes CVS code
just won't build for a couple of days, it happens, it's CVS.
Good luck.

I've been struggling with the appropriate build environment for e17. I
had been running an older CVS (mid-last year or so), and my build
environment is significantly different now.

Currently, I'm at:

# equery list autoconf
[ Searching for package 'autoconf' in all categories among: ]

[I--] [ ] sys-devel/autoconf-2.13 (2.1)
[I--] [ ] sys-devel/autoconf-2.59-r7 (2.5)
[I--] [ ] sys-devel/autoconf-wrapper-4-r3 (0)

# equery list automake

[I--] [ ] sys-devel/automake-1.4_p6 (1.4)

[I--] [ ] sys-devel/automake-1.10 (1.10)
[I--] [ ] sys-devel/automake-wrapper-1-r1 (0)

I'm using:

WANT_AUTOCONF="2.50" (suggested by get-e.org)
E17_WANT_AUTOMAKE="1.9" (suggested in a Gentoo Forums thread )
with automake-wrapper-1-r1 (suggested elsewhere.. forums of get-e.org, IIRC)

If I simply emerge e-, it errors out with:

Quote:
* autoconf *

configure.in:19: error: possibly undefined macro: AC_C___ATTRIBUTE__
If this token and others are legitimate, please use m4_pattern_allow.
See the Autoconf documentation.

To avert this and other errors, I unpack the source (and comment out
the AC_C___ATTRIBUTE__ line), then run autopoint -f.

At which point, I can "ebuild e- compile", which completes. When I
attempt the "ebuild e- install", it hums along nicely until:

You can do so by saving the window preferences.
Right click on your window -> Remember
Then select preferably window type, or window class for type of way to
remember, then select what you want it to remember.
After that, hit apply, ok, and try it out. Should work ok.

Hi,

At E17 startup I'd like to start an application automatically
(e.g. xterm) with a certain geometry and sticky.

I know I can put the application I want to start into file .order in the
./applications/startup directory. But how can I control the
stickyness and geometry I'd like to have?

Do a + right click on the app you want to restart at login.
Go to Remember settings, tick "Startup at login" and you're all set.
Don't do that with epplets, but for anything else it works well.

I'm not sure I understand the question. Do you mean what window manager

Because, yes this works in enlightenment without anything else. And I run
E the same way you do; with nothing else behind it. I have a simple,
standard E without Gnome, or KDE or whatever else running with it.

For the people maintaining or developping E:
This might be something to be included in the documentation for E: a list

Mostly, the modifier keys are , and sometimes the "Windows

[e-users] How to add extra mouse button actions?

2004-02-01 Thread Jonathan Charnas
Hi all
I was replying to some questions for the E-Users list, and I thought I
might just type another email for the list.
I am the happy possessor of a MS Trackball Explorer. Yes, I do like Linux,
but MS still makes good hardware, nothing wrong with that, only windows
really gets on my nerves.
The trackball has two extra buttons in addition to the two+wheel of a
regular mouse.
I was looking around on google, trying to figure out how to configure
those buttons for X, or for E as a matter of fact.
All the posts and explanations I have found on google were too obscure of
obsolete for me to implement them and have something functional.
Does anybody know how to do that, even if it's not the same hardware? I
really like the disposition of the trackball, and the two additional
buttons really make sense and are where they should be. It would be a
shame not to use them.
This is not really an E related question, but people on here have a
generally good understanding of how X and linux work, as E is no longer
one of the favored window managers for the general public distros. It's a
shame, but I guess they all want to look like windows, when I personally
hate the "taskbar look"...
Speaking of which, how's that screenshot collection coming along?

Anyway, enough questions...
Thanks for any help
John C.

Re: [e-users] E-based distro->build out of what?

2004-03-03 Thread Jonathan Charnas
I'm no expert about this, but I really like the idea. I was hoping to
switch distros myself sometime soon (soon meaning within 4 months).
As a mandrake user, I can tell you what I like and what I don't like:
Likes:
ease of installation
frequent updates, whether security or just new version of a program
urpmi tool (kinda like apt, but different, they have a gui for it too)
ease to install E

Dislikes:
configuration tools not really adequate for non newbie users
difficulty to install new programs through rpms ( always have to be
.ix86.mdk.rpm, not any rpm, their names and deps are different)

sometimes hard to compile programs because libs in path have a version #
to it, have to make simlinks to have a correct compile.

rpm based distro.

All this to say that I would personally love see a distro of the same kind
as gentoo, only a little easier to install (presets for various machines
or hardware for instance). If I hadn't run into so many difficulties
trying to install gentoo the first time, I would keep running it. The
thing with gentoo is it installs only what you need, and compiled for your
needs. In my opinion it's the best idea. What could make it easier would
be a text configuration utility that asks for your hardware and sets the
best options automatically and starts compiling the base programs on its
own.
In short a mix of gentoo and mandrake would be perfect. I don't know if
it's feasible, and many of Mdk's configuration programs might be non
open-source, which might be a little tricky in case of inclusion in a new
distro.

And for a name, how about "En-tux" ?

Hoping for some actions to happen and contributions to give to this
project soon,
John

[e-users] Entrance & KDE session?

2004-03-15 Thread Jonathan Charnas
Hi, I was trying to set up my entrance to have a KDE session, for my
parents.
I love E, but they're new to linux and would probably be more at ease with
KDE. What strings do I add to /etc/entrance<...>.db? I tried startkde and
kde as the /entrance/session/3/session/ with an updated session count and
stuff, but I'm assuming some people have more experience with KDE than I
do.
Thanks for the help.

I was going to say, Edje will be able to do that... Including fading from
one bg image to the next, rotating transitions, slides and what not. In
fact, it might even play videos, if I read raster right on #e a couple of
weeks ago. Of course, it won't be ready until we actually have all the EFL
good and stable and ready for use in DR17. But I think it'll actually be
there. I'm glad I'm taking CS in college this fall: I'll learn how to
program in C, and I'll be (at last!) of some usefulness for E's code.
(well, usefulness remains to be seen. I might just break everything
too...)
Anyhow, to answer your question there will be no need for an extra lib, as
edje is there for that.
Cheers!
John

No, Brad, to complete your answer, you don't need to restart e, just
regenerate menus. To do that, middle-click -> maintenance -> regenerate
menus. The Bgs you added should appear in the desktop menu... middle-click
-> desktop -> backgrounds -> background you want.

I wonder what ebg and bbrb are Florence, would you mind filling in my lack
of knowledge?

Alan, there are others missing, like erss and examine, but not many more.
Evidence is also in portage, as well as entrance and almost all of the
EFL. However, they're updated every other week, if not longer sometimes.
Just to let you guys know that for me, gentoo is the easiest disrto with
which to combine official packages and cvs code from the E cvs, as opposed
to mandrake or debian, which are binairy distros and don't like your
meddling in their packaging system by installing "un-official"
self-compiled programs.
Now I know that this statement might start a flaming distro war, but
please, don't start one, I have been in many, and also because I've tried
both distros I mention above, and that my statement is based on my own
personal experience, not necessarily the distro's capabilities. Someone on
irc already told me that debian could work like gentoo and compile
everything from scratch, but I didn't know that, and honestly, I haven't
looked deep enough in the docs that it seemed self-evident, and most
people I know use debian as a binairy distro.

Ooops, just realized I made one of the biggest mis-statements in my life:
erss is present in portage, but not examine. I was thinking of equate
that's not in portage either. Just to correct myself.

this is going too fast for me. Soon I won't know what version of E I'm

Joking aside, nice job Kim, I'll update when I get home tonight.

You can configure the Engage static buttons. Yes it does read from the
apps from the desktop, but there's also a list of "always there" icons.
They're configured in ~/.e/apps/engage/applinks and the Text and icon
config goes in ~/.e/apps/engage/mappings. The one thing relating the
icon+text config to the actual presence of the button in engage is the
Window Class. Be sure to read that when opening the "remember" dialog box
and typing it as is, it's case sensitive too. For mozilla, it'll be
Mozilla-bin, gimp will be Gimp-2.0 (for version 2.0 of course, 1.2 is just
Gimp I think), gaim is Gaim, evolution is Evolution, etc... just read them
off as you edit your mappings/applinks files.

well obviously if he doesn't know english, maybe you should translate it
to spanish for him, so he can then answer other spanish speakers, because
it might just be that for a spanish-speaking only user it's not as evident
as it is for us.

True, lack of english is a drawback. However, I do think that C is the
same in spanish as it is in english. So he can still do bugfixes or
patches, and submit them without knowing english. True, it'll be hard to
know what they do. But if it's good code, well, I suppose just reading it
through will tell you what it does, no?

Yeah, that's me. I don't know how to speak spanish...

I'm with you there. Maybe an internalization of enlightenment.org would
help too. I'd be willing to do the french translation of it. I'm (almost)
perfectly bilingual. And I suppose with the help of a dictionary I could
put a german version together as well. (well, dictionary & grammar

Or you can use evidence, which uses the EFL and integrates beautifully
with 16.6/7pre. Evidence is much nicer looking than konqueror or nautilus
anyways. And you don't need qt or gtk for it either. Much lighter if you
use E.

I'm not sure what's wrong, but if you have gentoo you can emerge the
tarballs from portage and that will work. It's not a bugfix, but I assume
you're not a developper (I'm probably wrong since you've tracked the
errors in the code), and I further assume you only want to use the
programs. So, if you don't use gentoo I'd be happy to download the
tarballs and post them on my website for you temporarily. I know the
portage tarballs compile cleanly, at least so far, and that includes
entrance and entice.
Another solution would be to go in #e and find out if someone has a more
complete answer to your question.

Cheers
John

Re: [e-users] Entrance as dm in Mandrake

2004-08-19 Thread Jonathan Charnas
I don't know about mandrake, but in gentoo, if you look at /etc/rc.conf,
there is a line to change in it that'll make it be used by default.
I'm at work right now, so I can't tell you which line for sure, but look
into it, you might just find it there.
Lemme know if that's not it, I'm curious as to how mandrake works.

Re: [e-users] newbie question: how to compile CVS file?

2004-08-19 Thread Jonathan Charnas
Actually, they're linked from the source page.
Go on the source page and it'll be linked there as "Build Notes -- READ
THIS!".
Of course, it's not in an obvious place, but it's good enough for what my
taste.
For your error, I don't know... I suppose it'll be fixed. Usually it's a
problem with the version of automake/aclocal/autoheader that makes that
for my gentoo box. You might wanna look into that and see if it helps.
Good Luck

i use the left-alt button.
however, when i use right-alt+shift+left/rightArrow, something bizarre
happens. ctrl- seems to be prepended to all my keystrokes. so if i type
a, it is interpreted as ^a, etc, etc. in the end, i am usually forced to
ctrl-alt-backspace (although, in this case, alt-backspace would also
work)
why? =)

Well, are you using a standard QWERTY keyboard, with a qwerty map?
Because I know that on an AZERTY the right alt key is mapped to extra
functions, a little like the "Fn" key on a laptop keyboard. If you're
using a localized keyboard, check that the localization doesn't map the
right alt-key to another function than that of "Alt".
On an AZERTY it's used to access special characters, so some keys have 3
characters (regular, with shift, and with the right-alt) instead of the
regular two we use on a QWERTY. This might be part of your problem...
Happy New Year

Restarting E (ctrl-alt-end) cleared it away though.

Should be fixed now.

Thanks, it is fixed in my latest build:
Enlightenment Version : enlightenment-0.16.8
code is current to: $Date: 2004/12/29 00:15:31 $

What exactly does composite do? I haven't seen much difference with it on
or off.

"Real" window transparency, shadows 'n stuff. To see any difference you
would have to use xorg 6.8.x with Composite extension enabled.

Ah, I didn't have composite enabled in xorg.conf. I'll give it a try.
Note minor quirk I noticed after installing the new build is my icon box
initially cut off the left-side of the first icon. I closed the iconbox and
created a new one. Haven't seen the problem since. Maybe a stale cache
setting?

Thanks,
Brad

Thanks for the precision... I have an ATI laptop chipset though.
Using the kernel driver is working fine for me, although 3D performance

Thanks though,

Add the following section to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or wherever it is on
your system).
Section "Extensions"
   Option "Composite" "Enable"
#Option "RENDER" "Enable"
EndSection
I have RENDER commented out as I have an NVIDIA card and RENDER
is automaticallly enabled RenderAccel is true:
   Option "RenderAccel" "True"
If you have a NVIDIA card (and are using the nvidia module and not nv) you
probably want:
   Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "True"
Otherwise GLX is disabled when Composite is enabled.
NVIDIA docs say:
Composite also causes problems with other driver components:
o Xv cannot draw into pixmaps that have been redirected offscreen and
will draw directly onto the screen instead. For some programs you can
work around this issue by using an alternative video driver. For
example, "mplayer -vo x11" will work correctly, as will "xine -V xshm".
If you wish to use Xv, you can simply disable the compositing manager
and re-enable it when you are finished.

As far as I know, if your kernel has 32 bit emulation it should work
fine. Otherwise just compiling the source on your 64 bit partition would
do the trick to get it working.
Hope this helps.
