First All-Electric Garbage Truck Takes Out The Trash In Chicago

Motiv Power Systems has designed the world’s first all-electric garbage
truck. The Electric Refuse Vehicle, or ERV, was made possible using Motiv’s
modular, plug-and-play electric Powertrain Control System (ePCS) technology
and in collaboration with Chicago’s existing refuse truck vendors. The city
is saving 2,688 gallons of gas by running these electric trash eaters on 60
mile routes.

“We are constantly looking to modernize and improve the City’s fleet
operations through environmentally conscious choices,” said David Reynolds,
Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Fleet and Facility Management.
“The City in a Garden is proud to be home to North America’s first
all-electric refuse and recycling truck, and we look forward to examining
how this truck can boost efficiency, reduce emissions and save tax payer
dollars in the future.”

“Besides dramatically lower fuel and maintenance cost, value of the ERV goes
beyond strict payback,” said Castelaz. “Each truck offsets over 55 barrels
of petroleum and 23 tons of carbon dioxide each year. Plus, no one wants
large, noisy truck engines idling next to their house at 6 am when they
could have clean, and quieter ERV’s keeping the morning peace instead.”

As a Chicago area resident this makes me well up with pride and it’s pretty
stinking cool (pun intended). Maybe we’ll see these trucks around more large
cities soon.

Chicago's New Electric Garbage Trucks Give Trash the Silent Treatment
Andrew Tarantola, Gawker Media Sep 16, 2014

You know how I know it's garbage day? Because it's 5 am and it sounds like
the trucks from Pump are getting busy on the curb. VROM, CRUNCH, SLAM,
WAKKA WAKKA WAKKA, SLAM, CRUNCH, VROM. But some lucky Chicagoans will
soon be able to sleep all the way through the night thanks to a new fleet of
(mostly) silent dump trucks.

Built by Motiv, an electric vehicle company that first gained prominence
with its electric school bus for Kings Canyon Unified School District in
California, the new all electric garbage truck will run a 60 mile route
while collecting and compacting an estimated 9 tons of trash every day. It
is also expected to save 2,688 gallons of diesel and $11,000 in maintenance
costs annually. Compact-y parts of the truck are still sure to make a
racket, but the driving part will be mercifully whisper-quiet.

In all, Chicago aims to add at least 20 of these vehicles to its existing,
600-strong fleet over the next five years at a cost of $13.4 million. The
electric truck will make its public debut on September 23rd at a Ride and
Drive event put on by the CALSTART High-Efficiency Truck Users Forum-check
it out before the vehicle is bathed in human refuse. [AP News]

If there is a platting house nearby, they won't charge much for a basket of
copper bits. Could be far less trouble than manual tinning. Nickel might
be better choice in that case. Of a flash of nickel under the tin. I would
do tin/lead dip if I was not concerned about ROHS and had a plater still
working with that. It is a much better coating in so many ways. If you
could find an old solder pot (for tinning leads and such) you could do that
yourself for smaller parts.

Re: [EVDL] Lithium batteries direct from China

2014-09-23 Thread Peri Hartman via EV

I'll add my 2 cents.

I remember the endless email threads about the fouled Thundersky
purchase, years back. I think that showed how difficult it can be to
import something from another country where you have little protection
or recourse if something goes wrong. Particularly with China where
there is a very wide range of ethics.

My personal experience is buying a bike light from a China importer in
the US. Even though the importer was in the US, this person was
unscrupulous and would not honor his warranty. I ended up trashing a
moderately expensive light after a couple months. I think with EV
batteries and other components it's a lot safer since a US distributor
would quickly go out of business if he didn't honor his warranties and
ship quality product in a timely manner.

I won't even buy tea directly from China. The package might say organic
but does it have melamine in it? There are some stellar farming
cooperatives in China but I have no idea if the label on the package is
genuine or not.

Again, it's a matter of having someone local who has a reputation on
the line and is bound by domestic laws and enforcement. I'm willing to
pay a bit more so that I can send a defective unit back to the supplier
to get swapped out rather than have to send something all the way to
China and not even, perhaps, get a replacement or a response. Who are
you going to call if you wire them money and get nothing in return?

As they say, caveat emptor.

Peri

Are these just a flat bar that bolts directly between cells. If so,
that's not a good way to do it.

The cells will move slightly due to road bumps and vibration, The cell
cases are plastic, which will expand and contract from temperature
changes. The cases will also swell over time as the cells age.

With rigid inter-cell jumpers, all this movement causes leaks and bad
connections to develop over time.

Your inter-cell cell jumpers should therefore have a bend or kink or
other method to provide a little bit of flexibility or give to avoid
straining the connections. This is true for *all* types of batteries;
not just lithium.

Hi David and All
This is basically a golf cart with a FG body. These and NEV's go for
about $4-9k mostly now and many thousands are in use transporting our seniors,
others, many as their main transportation in Fla, US.
They said it went 40 mph which for such a narrow 3wh is pushing it
stability wise Of course the EV version with it's low battery weight makes
it better.
I doubt it could be made for under $6k as one who does composites.
On the Citi-Car the motor was rated at 3.5hp, my E Woody was powered
by one to 60mph, that was at 36vdc where the C Car was 48vdc so more like 6hp
cont like it was in later units rated at 48vdc.
It was likely doing 11 hp going 60 mph in the e Woody. Though only
for minutes before the 12vdc batteries went low..

Cute indeed! Now, if they knock 80-90% off that price, they might sell a
few thousand.

They don't state a top speed, but I'd guess maybe 30mph with a 3hp motor,
since the original Citicar did 35mph at 3.5hp. With that and the range,
honestly, it's not much more than a toy. You might spend $2-3k for
something like that, but $22K? Seriously?

Re: [EVDL] Power of EV (DC)

2014-09-23 Thread Al via EV

500A from Leaf cells, ouch!
I don't think they will care for that.
What is your series-parallel setup with the cells?
How many amps when cruising at highway speed?

Subject: [EVDL] Power of EV (DC)

So, now that my Electric F-250 is fully functional with it's Leaf
batteries, I've been driving it more.
One of the odd things I have to deal with is that my other vehicle is a
nearly identical truck that is Diesel.
So, on the freeway with the Diesel (which I've been driving for years),
when accelerating into faster traffic, I have to make sure I have enough
room, and stomp on it.

Coming back from the Issaquah Drive Electric Week event, I got stuck
behind a truck doing 50mph, and the next lane was doing 65mph. Found a
gap, changed lanes, and stomped on the pedal. Then hit the brakes before
I rear-ended the car in front of me
500A at 310V can provide a LOT of acceleration, even with a 6000lb
vehicle.

Re: [EVDL] Lithium batteries direct from China

2014-09-23 Thread George Tyler via EV
Have you ever tested Enerdel batteries?

Lee Hart wrote:
My earliest ones were from a group buy organized by Victor Tikhonov in 2003.
They were white prismatic Lithium-Cobalt cells, in both 90ah and 100ah
models. Some of the 100ah cells were OK (maybe 3 out of 4 worked, but didn't
meet specs). *All* of the 90ah cells were junk. Some leaked, but the main
problems were low amphour capacity and excessive internal resistance.
Resistance on the 90ah cells was so high that they overheated even with a 25
amp load.

Maybe some of the purchasers abused their batteries and caused their
failures; but I certainly didn't.

I've continued to borrow, barter, and buy various lithiums for testing.
Prismatics and cylindrical, LiCo, LiMn, LiFe etc. They have
*consistently* failed to meet specs. Typically, their amphour capacity and
internal resistance are out of spec, with large variations between cells,
and a number of bad cells mixed in with the good. The most recent ones were
GBS 100ah LiFe cells, tested just last year. The only exception has been
A123 3.2v 2.5ah LiFe cylindrical cells; they were consistently good.

I'm forever hopeful that the manufacturers will get their act together
and start delivering an honest quality product, and stand behind them with a
warranty. But so far, if I'd spent good money for a full pack of any of
these batteries (except A123), I would have been screwed.

At the moment, I'm considering getting some Nissan Leaf cells to test.
I'm guessing that Nissan is likely to have made a *significant* effort to
get a good, quality product. I just have to make sure I'm not getting
Nissan's QC rejects!
