Tiger TESLA (Shimajiro)

Look! Outside the office complex! Is ... a Tesla Model S decked out as the
tiger in the Shima Shima Tora no Shimajiro Japanese anime series that was
once so beloved by Japanese toddlers. And, in this case, us as well.

The Tesla, first seen a few years ago, was spotted outside of an office
complex in Kobe, Japan, and was committed to posterity in a 46-second video
now posted on YouTube. The black-and-yellow Model S was part of a local
educational program that included the Shimajiro series, which debuted in
1993 and ran for almost 15 years.

And ferocious performance be damned, this Tiger-themed Tesla looks downright
cuddly. The sedan includes a smiley face and two saucer eyes on the grille
of the Model S's "frunk," a pair of "ears" near the windshield and, yes, a
tail sticking out of the trunk. Check out the video above and prepare to be
charmed.

Tiger-themed Tesla Model S Wrap a Nod to Japanese Anime

Model S Tiger-themed Tesla Model S Wrap a Nod to Japanese Anime

What do you get when you cross a Japanese preschool tiger anime with a Tesla
Model S? You get one of the happiest looking cars on the road outfitted with
its own set of ears and tail.

YouTube user BusanKevin uploaded a video of the Shimajiro Tesla seen outside
of an office complex in Kobe, Japan. Shimajiro, a mascot to a popular
Japanese preschool educational program, was created by parent publishing
company Benesse as a way to promote children’s education.

There’s not much to say about the car other than the fact that it’s so wrong
yet so right. A tiger-themed Tesla Model S wrap can only be acceptable if
the mission itself is one of education, especially if it’s for children.

That won’t stop us from cracking a few jokes at it though. Enjoy!

The Shimajiro EV is the coolest customized Tesla Model S yet. Our reasoning
for this statement may seem obvious (see photo above), but it's about more
than just looks. Ok, it's (mostly) all about the looks.

But there's also the fact that Benesse, a Japanese education company, has
chosen to use the American all-electric as a new vehicular version of its
(Children's Challenge) mascot, Shimajiro. That's cool because kids can learn
at a young age that big-people cars, like the toy versions, can run on
batteries too.

We're not the only one who likes this kawaii Tesla, of course. The electric
Shimajiro also gets a big thumbs up from a certain Nobuhiro "Monster"
Tajima. Of course, we know Tajima-san likes him some Model S, but what we
didn't know was the he and Children's Challenge have teamed up in the past
to create some online materials about electric cars and his own Pike's Peak
challenge.

Sadly, he have no video of Monster putting the car through its tire-smoking
paces (because that would be hilarious), though we have managed to track
down a few photos, showing the zoomorphic zoomer from different angles. So,
definitely check out the back in the gallery because it's as amusing as the
front.

Forget the Chevrolet Volt dance. Forget the hugging Polar Bears from the
Nissan LEAF’s first TV Ad. And forget those mischievous anthropomorphic Kia
Soul Hamsters in the Kia Soul EV ads.

They’re all pretty tame when compared with the latest at from Japanese
grocery store chain FamilyMart, which manages to combine a popular TV
monster with Japanese gravure idol Ai Shinozaki and a Nissan LEAF electric
car. It’s meant to advertise the fact that FamilyMart is the leading
provider of store-based Rapid DC quick charging for electric car customers
in Japan.

We’re going to let you watch the ad first — then explain what it’s all
about.

Those familiar with Japanese culture will recognise the non-human as
Eleking, the fictional alien electric-eel-like kaiju (strange creature) from
the tokusatsu (special effect) TV series Ultraseven. Created way back in
1967 by Eiji Tsuburaya, the series was a followup to the Ultraman series, a
live-action, special-effects show. Both feature the Science Special Search
Party, whose job it is to protect the earth from alien invasion and
rampaging monsters, primarily in human guise. But when the alien threat is
too much, one of the team inevitebly activates the “Beta Capsule,” a
powerful artifact which transforms them into a super-humanaoid giant from
space known as Ultraman. And in the best TV tradition, Ultraman always saves
the day.

Eleking is one of Ultraman’s many nemeses, and has come back again and again
to fight against him in various reincarnations of the series since its 1960s
inception.

With us so far? Good.

The woman in the ad meanwhile is Ai Shinozaki, a famous Japanese ‘gravure
idol’ (model) and singer. A member of the AeLL, a music idol group, she’s
instantly recognisable to anyone who follows Japanese idol group culture.

The ad itself involves Eleking the monster noticing the supermodel as he
plugs in his LEAF at the FamilyMart. Besotted, Eleking buys Shinozaki a
coffee, but that does nothing to impress the pop star. So a helpful employee
suggests he plays some music.

Cue the weirdest musical number we’ve seen in a while, with Eleking the
monster playing a foam guitar, accompanied by the store clerk on bass
guitar, and Shinozaki on vocals.

Her microphone, of course, is the CHAdeMO DC quick charge plug no-longer
charging the Nissan LEAF. But that’s okay, because we’re treated to a
musical montage of Ultraman references, includ

I just looked at that, and I read the charge temperature range to be from 0
C to 40 C. Am I reading that wrong. I just checked the CALB (LiFePO4)
specifications I have, and they state charging is allowed from 0 C to 45 C.

Re: [EVDL] Cold Charging Lithium Experiences

2015-02-25 Thread Roland via EV

You can charge at that very low temperature, but at a very low rate according
the specifications of my Li Ion Graphite cells.

My first EV came with two batteries, a 40 cell and a 50 cell 300 ah lead cobalt
battery that had a 1/4 inch thick aluminum case that was 20 inches high in

this high country in Montana, the lowest temperature my EV was at -41 F at work
at a elevation of 3600 ft at work.

I just kept a very low maintainer charge for about 8 hours. I was always the
first one out of the parking lot driving through a foot of snow while all the
other ICE's had trouble starting.

I also added a electric battery blanket which is normally use for 12 and 24
volt batteries. You can get these blankets at any auto part store. The one I
use was made by KAT's which was about 12 inches wide and 60 inches long for the
larger batteries. Wrap two blankets around each battery.

The wattage rating was about 80 watts for the smaller batteries and 160 watts
for the larger battery.

It was recommended not to block the bottom of the battery, because the battery
containers would frost up from any heat the batteries give off which cause the
outside surfaces to condensate. The grommet holes in the bottom of the heater
blanket allows the water to flow out.

You're reading it correctly: 0C to 40C for charge. -10C to 60C for
discharge. It is confusingly written, though.

The CALB CAs are, as you state 0C to 45C for charge, -20C to 55C for
discharge. That extra -20C is why I chose to only heat my batteries when
the truck is plugged in. I'm not particularly concerned about them
getting cold during the day while I'm parked at work.

Bill,

I think the issue is too fast a charge, for the temperature, and cell
composition. Which is to say, for a given cell, we have little information
worth paying attention to, that would be informative.

I think the whole industry suffers from a lack of understanding due to
inadequate testing methods. Then you throw in unwary marketing people, who
may paste the same graph, table or specification into a webpage or
brochure, imagining that it is simple - the same electrode composition must
produce the same performance and limitations. When we say LiFePO4 we are
only talking about the anode. We have a graphite cathode, but how it is
formed makes a difference. The electrolyte package which we are never privy
to is unknown and may as important as all the stuff we know about..

I do recall a brief discussion of this last year on this list where it came
up. I quoted a professor here in the NCSU Freedm Center (where they have
luminaries like the guy the inverted the IGBT, and have worked there on
prototype lithium cells), he told me he didn't know anything about lithium
plating. Was he talking about a specific chemistry? I didn't know enough
then to question him. I have found literature detailing the process of
plating so he either didn't know, wasn't talking, or meant something I
wasn't expecting.

I have a few papers on this which I will send you. They seem to support
the idea that plating happens.

Well, to be exact all Lithium Ion batteries die for one reason.

Loss of electrolyte.

Plating is just a way to loose electrolyte.

Without moving Li Ions the battery can't work. The Ions that move are in the
electrolyte.

Re: [EVDL] EVLN: Weirdest-Sexy L3 EVSE Ad @FamilyMart.jp (v)

2015-02-25 Thread EVDL Administrator via EV
I don't know that I'd call it sexy, except that one camera shot lingers
rather longer than necessary on the talent's, uh, physical assets. But
weird? Oh yeah, definitely.

I don't understand the Japanese, but this is what I got from watching it
before reading the synopsis in Nikki's story.

We have here a beast whose spinning horns (!) clearly show that he's utterly
smitten with a young woman shopper. The woman seems to just want to plug in
(unplug?) her Nissan Leaf at Famiy Mart.

The beast even tries to give her roses, but to no avail. Finally, with some
help from the Family Mart manager (?), he seems to win her over, getting her
to sing along with him as he plays his electric guitar (she uses the chademo
adapter as a microphone). By the end of the ad, she's throwing sparks
(kisses?) at him, they're dancing hand in hand, and he's helping her

There is some definite sexual innuendos for 'plugging in' with the beast and
'singing into the microphone'. Very strange video indeed! Not sure what they
are promoting, but I've seen strange stuff on youtube as well that the younger
generation follows. I'll have to admit that the 'bouncing around' assets of
the female where interesting and highlighted in the video.

(kisses?) at him, they're dancing hand in hand, and he's helping her
(finally) plug in her car. (Which, in the next scene, is again unplugged.
Go figure.)

2015-02-25 Thread Michael Ross via EV
There is nothing new here. The Japanese have always been less prudish than
Americans. I remember walking through department stores sort of like an
old Woolworths in outer Tokyo In about 1998 and turned a corner in the back
where fellow had a small shop selling all sort of porn comics and ...well I
didn't look real close. This is when you could only get a Playboy or
Hustler in a seedy gas stations in NC, definitely not where your daughters
would have any reason to walk by.. I bought a very nice woodworking pull
saw there, and some odd candy to take back to nieces and nephews. The
commercials and TV are all oddly different from what we are used to, in
many ways, not just around sex and gender.
