A crowd favorite was a SMART car wrapped in the old PDX carpet. The Portland
International Auto Show opened today, January 28, 2016 at the Portland
Conventional Center. The show runs through Sunday.

Where were the electric cars?: Has the electric car movement run out of gas?
I was surprised that in the vast car show at the Oregon Convention Center I
may have spotted a grand total of three or four electric cars and a couple
of hybrids. I walked past several people asking the same question I was:
Where are the Teslas? There was one pathetic hybrid that had marketing
material touting its range of 27 miles on electricity before it switches to
gas. This is ridiculous. We are never going to fix global warming and air
pollution with more of the same.

[EVDL] Mild hybrid = VW is claiming new EVs will use 48-volt systems

2016-02-07 Thread brucedp5 via EV

I saw this story days ago but decided to wait because I thought it was
worded wrong.
There is an existing production 48V EV, the Mahindra E2O:

http://mahindrareva.com/product/specifications
TECHNICAL ...
Power 19 KW @ 3750 rpm
Torque 53.9 N-m @ (0-3400 rpm)

Then I remembered about mild hybrids being pushed in the newswires I sieve
through:

https://google.com/search?q=mild+hybrid+48v
Mild hybrid with start-stop tech using a 48V pack

Here is an IEEE piece on micro hybrids use mild hybrid with start-stop

Micro-Hybrids Hold the Key to Future Auto Fuel Efficiency

In 2003 at EVS-20 mild hybrids were much yakked about as a cheap way for
automakers to improve their mpg.

It wasn't until a few years ago that automakers began implemented mild
hybrid designs:

Bottom line: IMO the 48V VW is as David posted, actually a mild hybrid.

NISSAN’S all-electric combi, the e-NV200, has taken off as a pioneering new
way of transporting holidaymakers to Gatwick Airport.

Sue Denman, owner of Springwood Guest House, in Horley, near Gatwick,
decided to turn to electric motoring as her old diesel was costing her too
much in maintenance.

She bought the award-winning Nissan e-NV200 – which costs an average of just
2p a mile to run – and now makes up to six trips a day to and from the busy
airport.

Sue said: “I’ve always thought an electric vehicle would be ideal as a
shuttle bus to the airport. We had a very old diesel van and I was throwing
good money after bad.

“I then looked into what electric vehicles there were on the market and
after seeing the e-NV200 it was a no-brainer.

“Quite often we have two couples travelling together so the e-NV200 is ideal
as there’s plenty of room for them as well as their luggage.”

Sue, who caters for up to 6,000 guests every year at her art deco-themed
guest house in Massetts Road, said the electric combi had attracted a great
deal of interest amongst holidaymakers.

“It’s absolutely brilliant. I really love it and have had some fantastic
feedback from guests,” she said. “There’s definitely a lot of interest in
it.”

Sue said the e-NV200’s silent drive also means it’s ideal for early morning
transfers – as it doesn’t wake up sleeping guests compared to when she fired
up her noisy diesel.

Sue is also planning on having an electric charger fitted, which she says
can be used by her guests who travel down in an electric vehicle.

As well as the cheaper running costs, the e-NV200 has low maintenance costs
– £1,200 lower than a conventional diesel van over four years.

The Citroen Deux Chevaux, a cheap and cheerful runabout, has been given a
new lease of life by going electric

video flash
]

PARIS, Feb 2 — The humble “Deux Chevaux”, once ubiquitous in the French
countryside, chugging down tree-lined roads — cue accordion music — is now
more of a curiosity than a cheap and cheerful runabout.

For entrepreneur Florent Dargnies, the Citroen 2CV — as the car is known for
short — is the heart and soul of his Paris tour company, ferrying some
20,000 visitors around the French capital each year.

But the car comes with a built-in problem: its petrol-fuelled thermal engine
does not meet ever-stricter emissions standards.

At the instigation of Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, all cars registered before
1997 will be barred from Paris streets during the day beginning in July.

Dargnies, anticipating the problem, began working on going electric five
years ago, delving into not only the research and development required but
also the administrative hurdles he would face.

Late last year, he obtained a patent for the electric 2CV and a green light
from Citroen.

His prototype has a 16-kilowatt powertrain manufactured by Mia Electric, a
now defunct company that produced “made in France” electric cars.

The battery allows the car to cover 80 kilometres (50 miles) before
recharging, enough for any of his tours, which include “Secret Paris”,
“Romantic Paris” and “Paris Impressionism”.

Its top speed is a nippy 110 kilometres (almost 70 miles) an hour.

“Our hope is to really work with City Hall not only so that this vehicle is
accepted but so that it contributes to the image, to the French art of
living,” Dargnies told AFP.

Citroen’s answer to the Volkswagen Beetle was first produced in 1948, and
kept rolling off the production line until 1990, more than five million of
them.

That was when the French auto giant had to stop producing them because of
emissions standards.

No broken eggs

The name of Dargnies’ company, Four Wheels Under an Umbrella, was the title
of Citroen’s rather whimsical original specs for the 2CV.

These included instructions suggesting that a farmer’s wife should have no
trouble driving it on “the worst roads” and that the suspension should
ensure that a basketful of eggs riding on the backseat would survive intact.

The cars are ideal for Dargnies’ tours, which are heavy on nostalgia for the
France of yesteryear.

Also, since they are convertibles, they “offer great views of the
monuments”, he says.

Set up in 2003, the company now boasts a fleet of 40 2CVs driven by around
100 chauffeurs.

But if Dargnies converts them all to electric power, would their silent
operation make them unauthentic?

Dargnies concedes that the distinctive thrum of the original air-cooled
motor was as familiar to generations of his countrymen as the car’s rounded
shape and its ultra-soft suspension system.

“The noise is part of the car’s charm,” he said, adding that his electric
version could one day, like some electric BMWs and Renaults, come with
recorded audio of the sound that gets louder with speed.

“It doesn’t seem too complicated,” he said. — AFP

GE in collaboration with Mahindra has developed a technology to wirelessly
charge the e2O Sport concept car being showcased at the Auto Expo 2016. This
is indeed a value creation opportunity for manufacturers of electric
vehicles of all sizes. This technology can pave the way to increased
adoption of EVs for a cleaner, greener future. EV charging eliminates the
need for a charging cable which is prone to damage, vandalism and potential
safety concerns. It also improves user comfort and convenience as there is
no need to manually plug in a cable – just park the vehicle over the
charging pad and charging begins.

The wireless charging technology developed by GE also has several benefits
over traditional charging methods. GE’s patented multi-coil system transfers
electric power with peak efficiency of over 92% across the ground clearance
of the vehicle at 3300 W. The technology also features a misalignment
tolerance in the range of 150 to 200 mm which is typically the radius of the
coil assembly. Unique protection and control mechanisms are embedded to
ensure safe, reliable, and robust operation of the system. The technology
enables Enables efficient interoperability with other charging systems. The
technology can also enable state of the art advanced charging strategies
like “charge on-the-go” which can eliminate the need to stop the vehicle for
a charge.

Electric Vehicles are truly the future, what with stress being laid on
emission norms and global climate impact. However, the constant need to park
the vehicle becomes a restraining factor for those who are in need of
continuous use of their vehicles. The groundbreaking technology of wireless
charging which also facilitates charging-on-the-go can definitely be a game
changer for vehicles in this segment. This particular advancement can also
bring in a surge in demand for electric vehicles. Other vehicle
manufacturers shall also start with their own research and development on
such vehicles, if this concept proves to be indeed beneficial and feasible.

When Greg Alden Steele decided to start a food truck, he wanted to do more
than just serve healthy, delicious meals. He also wanted to build a business
with a low carbon footprint, something in line with his dedication to
environmentalist principles. So he had custom electric vehicle fabricated to
help him start his business.

The Philly Greens food truck began life as a Polaris GEM electric utility
vehicle [
http://www.polaris.com/en-us/gem-electric-car
], with a custom body crafted at a local shop. It uses no propane, has no
grill, and can travel 30 miles on a single charge at a maximum speed of
25mph, which Steele says is more than enough power for him to travel around
the city. Right now, the truck isn’t completely green — it still has to be
plugged into an outlet for four to six hours each night — but Steele hopes
to add solar panels to the roof of the vehicle soon. He also uses a small
gas generator to heat the crockpots that keep his food warm.

The menu at Philly Greens is simple: Steele serves salad in the summer, soup
and chili in the winter. All the ingredients are non-GMO and seasonally
based. His specialty is a dish he calls the “jawn,” a salad with a base of
leafy greens, topped with quinoa, lentils, spices, chia and flax seeds,
along with a choice of fruit. If you’re in Philly and you’d like to pay a
visit, you can find it in front of the Community College of Philadelphia [
http://www.ccp.edu/
] on Mondays and Tuesdays, or visit the truck’s website for its rotating
schedule around town.

From the side and rear, Greg Alden Steele's new Philly Greens food truck
looks like just about every other one on the road today.

This Philly food truck is so plugged in - it's electric
But just look up front at the cab portion. It's rounded and snub-nosed. Is a
golf cart powering this truck? Close. It's a Polaris GEM electric utility
vehicle. Philly Greens is one of the few electric mobile food operations out
there.

Steele's journey to the food-truck life was fueled not only by a love of
food but the environment.

As a young man, Steele, now 49, worked for 10 years in the restaurant
business. But he made his career in database administration, which led him
to a job at Amtrak. Life in what he calls "a cube farm" bored him. In his
office, "I could see a little bit of sky."

He sought a way out. He explored other business ideas but settled on the
idea of a food truck. Seeking to reduce its carbon footprint, he decided to
go electric. He bought the Polaris and had the body fabricated at a shop in
Port Richmond.

His menu would be healthful - salads in the summer and soups/chili in the
winter.

This week, he's offering vegan chili made with quinoa and sunflower seeds,
arugula turnip soup, and a conventional chili.

"When you talk about the environment, you can get very negative," he said.
"I prefer to think of more positive alternatives."

Then, he said, he spun his wheels "metaphorically and literally," in setting
up the business. That's when he enrolled in Community College of
Philadelphia's three-month Mobile Food Management course [
http://www.ccp.edu/academic-offerings/professional-development/professional-certification-workshops/mobile-food
]. "That was really helpful," he said. The profs taught him about food,
marketing, and bureaucracy.

Instead of seeing a little bit of sky from his office, "now I can see the
whole sky."

Two days a week, he parks outside his alma mater, on 17th Street between
Callowhill and Spring Garden Streets. The rest of the time, he moves around;
his schedule is posted on the website. On Monday, he parked at Girard
College - all by himself - not to sell soup but to hand it out to Martin
Luther King Day volunteers.

The truck is not completely "off the grid," energy-wise. It still must be
plugged into an outlet for four to six

Re: [EVDL] EVLN: GE L2 3kW wireless EVSE charging collaboration with Mahindra's e20 EV

2016-02-07 Thread Peri Hartman via EV
Clearly, the concept of inductive charging can't be patented. But there
are many variations that might be unique and could be awarded a patent.
For example, they may have invented a new way of using multiple coils to
focus the field and increase efficiency. Or maybe they have simply
patented some ancillary part, like the housing. Who knows.

How could they patient inductive charging? That technology has been
around over 100 years. My toothbrush charges that way.

GE in collaboration with Mahindra has developed a technology to
wirelessly
charge the e2O Sport concept car being showcased at the Auto Expo 2016.
This

is indeed a value creation opportunity for manufacturers of electric
vehicles of all sizes. This technology can pave the way to increased
adoption of EVs for a cleaner, greener future. EV charging eliminates
the
need for a charging cable which is prone to damage, vandalism and
potential
safety concerns. It also improves user comfort and convenience as there
is

no need to manually plug in a cable – just park the vehicle over the
charging pad and charging begins.

The wireless charging technology developed by GE also has several
benefits
over traditional charging methods. GE’s patented multi-coil system
transfers
electric power with peak efficiency of over 92% across the ground
clearance

of the vehicle at 3300 W. The technology also features a misalignment
tolerance in the range of 150 to 200 mm which is typically the radius
of the

coil assembly. Unique protection and control mechanisms are embedded to
ensure safe, reliable, and robust operation of the system. The
technology
enables Enables efficient interoperability with other charging systems.
The
technology can also enable state of the art advanced charging
strategies
like “charge on-the-go” which can eliminate the need to stop the
vehicle for

a charge.

Electric Vehicles are truly the future, what with stress being laid on
emission norms and global climate impact. However, the constant need to
park

the vehicle becomes a restraining factor for those who are in need of
continuous use of their vehicles. The groundbreaking technology of
wireless
charging which also facilitates charging-on-the-go can definitely be a
game
changer for vehicles in this segment. This particular advancement can
also

bring in a surge in demand for electric vehicles. Other vehicle
manufacturers shall also start with their own research and development
on
such vehicles, if this concept proves to be indeed beneficial and
feasible.
