[EVDL] How to get a EMW Juicebox 40 pro EVSE working again ...

[EVDL] Generator?

2017-02-11 Thread Tom Martin via EV
Greetings Gents and ladies;

I need to know what type of generator will keep my 144v ( 12 / 12s ) system
running?

I didn't buy it new, I built my own, like so many of you did several years
ago. I want to put a generator in it so I can keep going, and going, and going.

I don't know if a store model 8kw gen will do the job or not. Any
knowledgeable info will be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: [EVDL] Generator?

2017-02-11 Thread Cor van de Water via EV
Tom,

Several remarks and a bit of data here:
8kW genset is usually not capable of continuous duty 8kW output.
To cruise 55 MPH on flat road will take approx 15 kW continuous.
Most cheap gensets emit the same or more pollution as 100 cars, if that
is a concern to you.
The simplest way to have a low emission, efficient, cheap and long range
vehicle is to keep a gas car for the occasional long trip OR to rent a
vehicle for those occasions.
Decent used Prius'es can be had for under $2k but since it will be used
for occasional trips only, a regular car can work just as well.
Rental cars can be had for $25 for a weekend when business travelers are
not using them.

Use the EV for what it is good at and the other 5 or 10% of the time,
use a different tool. Just like you don't use a sledge hammer to drive a
thumb tack in the fridge bulletin board and you don't use a pencil to
tear down a wall.

So - yes, it can be done. Find a way that you can charge and drive at
the same time, use the battery to bridge moments of high energy use and
dimension the genset for the average power the you want to be using, or
make frequent stops to allow the genset to catch up charging the pack,
but note that it may be illegal to leave the genset running while parked
(depends on the local laws) and you will likely be appalled by the noise
and stink that your otherwise so silent and odorless EV is now belching
out...

Another solution without genset is the pusher-trailer.
It is constructed from the front clip of a front wheel drive car with
automatic gearing and it only requires a tow hitch on the EV. Only in
case you want to make a long trip do you hitch up the pusher, if you add
a remote start/stop and accelerator control then you can get on the
road, kick it on and let it push the EV at your desired speed until you
are close to your destination, then stop it and finish the last bit on
EV power again.
If your vehicle has regen braking then you can even recharge your EV
while being pushed...

Hope this helps,

Re: [EVDL] How to get a EMW Juicebox 40 pro EVSE working again ...

2017-02-11 Thread Cor van de Water via EV
Hi Bruce,
What is your interest in getting this Juicebox fixed?
Is it available as public charger or do you want to enable that Dr to
charge at work again?

The battery-shaped JuiceBox was the very first design of EMW, they did a
kickstarter for it a couple years ago. I participated but instead of the
Pro (AA cell shape) I got a standard Juicebox, which is a square grey
alu box.
Works pretty well but I am not so sure about the weather-proofing if not
very carefully assembled. Also there have been a number of revs on the
design to deal with some flaws in the original design.
Even if the electronics board inside is toast, it may be possible to
re-use the contactor if it is not corroded away.
Doubtful that the power supply is in any better shape than the circuit
board, as neither is weather protected beyond the enclosure keeping the
rain out, so condensation can easily do it in.
Since this is a Pro, it has a display and WiFi and is supposed to
connect to an Access Point (wireless router) to manage the device.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for responding Cor.
Your response is in alignment with an off-line response I got that also
states doubts of that model's suitability for outside use, as they found
moisture getting inside was a point of failure.

>What is your interest in getting this Juicebox fixed?
Is it available as public charger or do you want to enable that Dr to
charge at work again? <

Well, I have a few reasons.
One was to have some answers for when I do talk to the Dr (trying to be a
helpful EV advocate).

Another reason was to understand what the process would be to repair that
brand and model EVSE. I have not had to deal with getting an EVSE repaired
for many years since losing my S-10 Blazer conversion (I had six chargers
on-board of various types and brands). So, learning about this situation
would help me be j1772 compatible current/up-to-date.

The EVSE was mounted on one of the "patients-only" parking spots, and was
not marked as EV-only. The Dr. was not there at the time I was there to
secure an appt with him. The website on his appt card showed he has three
locations. So, I think it is safe to assume that if his Tesla isn't using
the EVSE, a patient could plugin (EVSE access would not be totally public).

After I have his consult on my medical issue I need him to resolve, I will
ask if he wants to chat about his EVSE and what he drives, etc.

[EVDL] Extending range: Generator?

2017-02-11 Thread brucedp5 via EV
Tom,

Until you tell us what vehicle you are driving, what charger you will
connect to the genset, we can only give you pot-shot guesses.
If you have an evalbum listing pls let us know the URL.
Pls give us more information of what you are trying to do:
-how far do you need to drive?

IMO, you should just follow Cor's advice an bag a cheap prius for long
trips.

By your terse post, I assume you have a 144v pack made up of 12 12V agms,
which likely translates to a safe-discharge SOC= 30 mile range.
A search of the evdl nabble archive shows in the past (2009) you posted
about using a bad boy (bb) charger (a cheap, inefficient, dangerous way to
charge -- I know, I have done it).

If you are still using a bb, a meter would show a 15A charge rate, but 50%
of the power would be wasted, and you would need a 30+A outlet.
Also if you are charging off 120VAC trying to charge a 144VDC pack, the
first 30% will charge at a higher rate, but that rate will quickly drop to
much slower as the pack voltage rises.

Even if you were able to maintain a 15A charge rate using a generator while
you drive, with a bb, as the pack SOC dropped, so will its voltage. So, it
will cause the genset's breaker to pop.

I first saw this way-way back in the early days, when Otmar drove his
24-optima 144VDC S-10 truck to the SF presidio for the SFBear EVent
http://saccityweb.com/seva/evupdate/1996/evup0496.html

Though the genset was emblazoned with the words whisper-quiet, it was
anything but, as Cor said, spewing partially burnt gasoline smoke as he
drove up Hwy 280 from Palo_Alto-CA toward the northern tip of SF.

Just before we all (there was a caravan of conversion EVs trying to reach
there) came close to the SF border, we stopped near Colma as Otmar's genset
breaker kept tripping when he accelerated (which dropped the pack voltage,
which drew too much current through the genset breaker = pop).

We hung out for a couple hours (up wind) while his genset tried to put a
charge on his pack.
We did reach there, but it took Otmar a couple more stops to slow genset
charge to get there.

I arrived with a 144V MG that had 12 group 27 wet cell PbSO4 batteries. I
could charge off 120VAC with less monitoring that him, as he had to baby sit
his charge current. He used a series of extension cords to adjust his
current rate: more 12-3 cords in series in the beginning, unplugging and
removing an extension when the current dropped off as the pack voltage rose,
repeat. I had a Bycan saturated-transformer type charger, and I was charged
enough to leave before him, as his final charge rate was super slow (5A).

I do not recommend anyone using a bb charger. Get a decent power factor
corrected charger that can plug into the j1772 EVSE infrastructure at a 30A
rate.

My personal experience was to charge off different gensets. A 1kW genset was
pretty much useless, adding only 5 to 10% to my range, and having to still
stop and wait to finish the charge if there was no public EVSE available.

Later, I had a large 10kW genset [like:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tomahawk-Power-10-000-Watt-Gasoline-Portable-Generator-15-HP-4-stroke-Engine-/162387280425
] powering a manzanita micro (mm) pfc-30. The best I could pull off it was
5kW. Only getting 50 to 60% of a genset's peak rated power is about the
norm. So, if you need 6kW, get a 15+kW genset and a decent charger that can
handle that power.

Note: some gensets put out nasty spikes and harmonics even without being
stressed under a heavy load, which can cause damage to some chargers. My
experience found, most of the more expensive, better gensets have less
spikes, and work well with mm pfc chargers while your driving (check with mm
first of what you are doing for their OK).

With all that experience from back then when there was no abundance of cheap
used prius to use instead, we made do. But today, I would just follow Cor's
advice.

So, let's clean that up a bit:

Hi Jim,
Maybe check for GEM wiring schematic so you can see how the charger ties
into the vehicle and from that, find the pinout?
