Surprisingly, given that there's no engine that needs cooling under the
hood, the I-Pace has a big grille for a nose that'll look familiar to the
brand's fans.

Detroit | If you consider the Jaguar I-Pace, I advise testing the systems,
and climate controls extensively during your test drive.

Transcript of a hands-free phone call while testing the vehicle:

Me: Paul? You free?

A: I have a minute before a conference call.

M: I want to check what you think of the Jaguar I-Pace. I'm driving one, and
I hate it so much I want to crash it into a wall.

A: What? I loved that vehicle. I'll call you back in half an hour.

Paul is Paul Eisenstein, auto writer and a peer whose opinions I respect,
but don't always share. The kind of person to call when you're thinking
about aiming an $US86,000 ($121,000) electric luxury vehicle at a bridge
abutment rather than spend another minute trying to adjust the air
conditioning fan speed.

Conversations like this are the bane of auto makers, as they try to reinvent
themselves with electric vehicles, self-driving robot cars, vehicles on
demand and other new challenges. Some of them behave as if it's unfair to
expect them to create new types of vehicles and simultaneously deliver
features we take for granted in today's cars and SUVs.

The 2018 Jaguar I-Pace, the brand's first electric vehicle - if you don't
count one-offs built for royal weddings and the like - is a perfect, and
occasionally maddening, example. It's an accomplished electric vehicle
that's barely average among luxury SUVs due to faults that have nothing to
do with the innovative zero-emissions drivetrain at its heart.

Eisenstein never called back, by the way. That's Paul, but he had given me
what I needed: A reminder that an early-adopting tech fan might love a
vehicle that reduced me to sputtering obscenities when I tried to make a
simple phone call.

Maybe you're that tech fan. Clearly, I'm not.

Here's the lowdown on the new electric Jag.
Behind the Wheel

  - 2018 Jaguar I-Pace
  - All-wheel-drive, five-passenger luxury SUV
  - Price as tested: $US85,900 (excluding destination charge)
  - Rating: Two out of four stars
  - Reasons to buy: Electric power, looks, acceleration.
  - Shortcomings: Frustrating climate controls, poor smartphone integration,
poor voice recognition.

How much?

The I-Pace uses a brand new architecture Jaguar Land Rover developed for its
upcoming electric vehicles. Sales just began around the world. The first
deliveries to US customers are expected in November.

All I-Paces have two electric motors for all-wheel drive, one on each axle.
They produce 396 horsepower and 512 pound-feet of torque. The five-passenger
I-Pace is a compact SUV.

US prices will start at $US69,500. I tested a top-of-the-line I-Pace First
Edition. It had a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, 20-inch
wheels, 825-watt Meridian audio, leather interior, suede headliner, heated
steering wheel, blind-spot assist, lane-keeping assist, navigation, power
tailgate and more.

It stickered at $US85,900. All prices exclude destination charges.

At 184.3 inches long, it's 2 inches shorter than Jag's conventionally
powered F-Pace SUV.

If you're determined to buy an electric luxury SUV, there's not much
competition for the I-Pace. The Tesla Model X is more than a foot longer and
costs significantly more when comparably equipped. The Audi E-tron SUV won't
be on sale til the second quarter of 2019 and is 8.7 inches longer. The
other announced luxury electric SUV, the Mercedes EQC, isn't due til 2020.

If you want a conventionally powered but otherwise technically advanced and
luxury-sport SUV, you have an embarrassment of choices.
Competitive base prices

(Excluding destination charges)

(Automatic transmission, all-wheel drive models.)

  - Jaguar I-Pace First Edition: $US85,900
  - Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio: $US79,995
  - BMW X3 M40i: $US54,650
  - Porsche Macan turbo: $US77,200
  - Tesla Model X 100D: $US96,000

Oil giant Koch Industries try to stop the attempt to expand the electric
vehicle federal tax credit

Rolling Stone caricature of the Koch brothers by Victor Juhasz: Inside the
Koch Brothers’ Toxic Empire
]

With a new Republican-backed effort to expand the electric vehicle federal
tax credit, the Koch brothers are urging senators to vote against it –
putting their political donation dollars at work.

The situation around the federal tax credit for EVs is weirder than ever
right now.

As Tesla hit the threshold to initiate the phase-out, there are two
different legislative efforts to change it.

Earlier this month, a Republican senator introduced a new bill to end the
$7,500 federal tax credit for electric cars and tax them even more instead.

But a few days later, another Republican senator proposed a new bill to
remove the federal tax credit cap for EVs and expand it to 2022.

Now Koch Industries, which is a fossil fuel company owned by the
conservative Koch brothers, is weighing in on the issue and unsurprisingly,
they are urging senators to vote to kill the EV tax credit.

Koch lobbyist Philip Ellender wrote in a letter to senators earlier this
week (via Bloomberg):

“Subsidizing the wealthy with tax dollars is not only bad policy, it
also increases our national deficit. I urge you to oppose the expansion of
credits on plug-in electric vehicles (EV) through 2022.”

It’s not the first time that the Kochs have used their political weight to
lobby against electric vehicles.

In 2016, the Koch brothers launched an offensive against electric vehicles
through a multimillion-dollar lobbying campaign.

Electrek’s Take

The EV federal tax credit is giving tax dollars to the rich and increasing
the deficit?

I must be dumb because I thought that the giant corporate tax cut that they
lobbied for achieved that – not the EV tax credit.

As I like to emphasize when talking about the EV tax credit, I acknowledge
that it’s not a perfect solution, but it’s the best we have short of a
carbon tax.

Without a carbon tax, it means that all non-EVs are getting important
subsidies and therefore, it makes sense to directly subsidize EVs to
compensate.

LAFAYETTE, LA – October 26, 2018 – Bayou Electric Vehicles [
https://www.bayouev.org/
] today announced that it will host “Plugging In” this Sunday, October 28
from 12:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Wurst Biergarten located at 537 Jefferson Street
in downtown Lafayette [map
https://goo.gl/maps/wZrHKaLHWAm
]. “Plugging In” is a community event to raise funds for Lafayette’s first
public fast electric vehicle charging station.

The event, sponsored by Bayou Electric Vehicles, Wurst Biergarten and
NextGEN Utility Systems will feature live music, free gumbo and an
opportunity for community members to learn more about clean energy
initiatives. All donations will go toward funding a vehicle charging
station. The station will be located in downtown Lafayette and will serve an
added benefit of bringing drivers in from off the interstate.

“This would be the second charging station of its kind in the state of
Louisiana,” said Dr. Jeff Leblanc of Bayou Electric Vehicles. “It would be
the only station like this conveniently between Lake Charles and Baton
Rouge, encouraging drivers of electric vehicles to pull off and charge in
downtown Lafayette while enjoying local businesses.”

Robert Guercio, owner of Wurst Biergarten in downtown Lafayette said, “As a
local business owner, I’m excited about the opportunity to attract even more
people to downtown Lafayette. This charging station would help us reach
people who otherwise may not be inclined to spend some time enjoying all
that Lafayette has to offer.”

“NextGEN is proud to partner with Bayou Electric Vehicles and Wurst
Biergarten to sponsor this event.” NextGEN Managing Director Jeff Baudier
said. “Sponsoring events like this is one of the many ways NextGEN plans to
support the Lafayette community. We will be there with our families and
encourage everyone to stop by, enjoy some good food and get to know our team
and what NextGEN is about.

With half the population living in urban areas, including suburbs, we're
talking about a lot of people who don't have room for more than two
vehicles even if they want more. Even two, though, gives you a much
better fit than one-for-all.

I donno. My family of four before the kids left had 5. Not a one cost
more
than $5k. Salvage Priuses for daily use, plus a gramma's hand-me-down
Geo

Metro and an old Ford van for occasional towing and hauling. And a few
un-registered old EV projects out back. The entire fleet cost much
less

than a single average new American car.

We drove a vehicle appropriate for the trip.

The latter two? I doubt it.

You're right; people tend to want a "universal" solution; one vehicle
to

do everything.

But that's not really practical. It forces compromises so the vehicle
is

not really good at anything. You see luxury pickup trucks that can't
really haul anything, or huge SUVs being used for single-person
commuting.

So most people have more than one car. Each vehicle can be more
closely

optimzed to the job it spends most of its time doing.

One hopes that EVs will often be these second vehicles. If it's for
commuting, it doesn't need long range, or high seating capacity, or
towing

capabilities. The owner will have another vehicle for that.

Re: [EVDL] EVLN: The physics of slapping solar panels on cars

Electric bicycles were my main transportation for years. Citicars and
converted EVs second and a rental ICE if I needed long distance. This
was before all the current EV options.

We drove a vehicle appropriate for the trip.

That's my situation as well. We have one car per driver in the family.
Each one is different, so we can pick the vehicle best suited to the job
at hand. A 2013 Leaf (daily driver), a 2001 Prius (long trips), and a
2010 pickup (towing, hauling).

It doesn't appear to me that this strategy is at all unusual.

If there was a vehicle that could do it all the Stella vehicles would come
close...except for towing, and carrying big loads...pretty big but not pickup
big.  Also their monocoque construction is very strong and they have 5 point
seatbelts which make them as safe as formula 1.  Lawrence Rhodes

Amen to that. I really need three cars, but drive one that is not idea for the
majority of my driving, but required for some of it. I can assure you that a
full sized, crew cab 4x4 pickup is NOT the ideal one person commuting car, but
is required for other stuff... I could rent (and have a few times) one of the
three, but the truck as equipped can not be rented.

I agree. Big corporations aren't about altruism; they're about profit.
GM has simply decided there is more profit in staying in the EV market
than in getting out.

I'd guess they spent a lot on EV tooling, and will lose it if they don't
sell enough EVs to recover it.

GM is so big that it is a "nation" onto itself. They pay little
attention to what the other automaker "nations" do, and are influenced
more by their own internal politics.

I appreciate the cynicism, but I find no evidence of that.

That article is old, but I suspect that the data still applies. It says nothing
about a government bailout.

So they are losing money on the Bolt. The Prius lost money for 10 years, but is
Toyota’s most popular car. These folks are in it for the long game, and have
been investing in both types of EVs.
