[EVDL] Motors in Parallel

2015-03-25 Thread Bill Dennis via EV
Last month, I wrote about hooking up two 8-inch ADC motors physically in
parallel, via a toothed belt. I'm wondering how I need to size the belt.
The tail shaft of the motors sticks out about two inches, so that's where
the pulley will have to attach. Unlike normal belt drives, this one won't
be transferring power to a load; it is mostly just to keep the motors in
synch. Can anyone provide guidance? I think Otmar did the same thing for a
Porsche 914.

Thanks,

Bill

Hello Bill,

Contact a machine shop and/or bearing supply store that handles power drive
systems. I used Dodge or Browning Power Transmission Systems. I used either
of these devices, such as industrial drive taper lock pulleys and couplers.
Also use there industrial cog belts which they will rate for the torque, rpm,
and hp needed.

My drive belts that come off the pilot shaft of a GE-11 or a Warp-11 motor has
now been running since 1980!! I use a wide 2 inch cog belt that runs the
vacuum pump, water pump for the heating, a power steering pump at one time, and
a rotating inverter/alternator that provides both 110 VDC 7kw (converts to 120
VAC 60 cycle for electric heater loads), provides 13.5 to 16 VDC to a large
deep cycle 12 volt battery.

Provides a REGEN force on the motor by a load up to 6kw which actually will
slow the EV down on a very icy down hill road.

Roland

Dual motors are not new idea, and have brought success in the EV-past. Many
years ago when there were few off-the-shelf EV components, Robert Schneeveis
built an Electric race car SnoWhite using two 8" ADC Electric motors:

There are a few EV old timers still around that know of the Tropica EV (aka
Zebra, the original Xebra) shown in Don Johnson's old TV show Nash Bridges:

Actor Don Johnson has teamed up with a group of Chinese venture capitalists
and American investment bankers to buy Zebra Motors Inc., electric vehicle
manufacturer at the former [Alameda, CA NAS] ...

The new owners have renamed the company Xebra Motors ...
The Model Z Roadster has already appeared on Nash Bridges, driven by the
character Caitlin Cross played by Yasmine Bleeth.

"Don got my character an electric car," Bleeth told the Austin (Texas)
American Statesman. "He was very adamant about it." The car was originally
white, but, she said, "We actually had some guys -- some paint guys -- come
up with some different paint chips to match the exact color of my eyes. So
it is kind of a Yasmine-blue car." ...

Cars Inc. of Florida ... A rather loud whir from the motors combines with
the wind in your face to make the ensuing ... Engine control: twin 550 amp
Mosfet controllers ...
Two DC motors mounted on the rear trailing arms provide a peak of 24.5 HP
directly to each rear wheel through a toothed rubber belt ...

One of our EV-Gods (like Otmar), is the aforementioned Bob Schneeveis
who has built many EV creations. One of which was a four belted motor EV
design mentioned below:

Re: Electric Salt Flats Record Attempt
Roderick Wilde Sep 04, 2007
I wish Brent all the luck in the world in his attempt! He's a great guy and
has done an incredible amount of work towards getting EVs accepted. I was on
the "Silent Thunder" team at Bonneville when it did the 132 mph run. I
originally built the car and road raced it.

After it was purchased by Michael Murphy he had Bob Schneeveis put in the
four eight inch ADC motors.

It wasn't even breathing hard at 132 mph. The motors were barely warm to the
touch after the run. The car just ran out of gearing.

I found a few links for you to explore and ask questions, if you do not get
the answers you need:

The fine-folk at Nedra.com have used dual motors, one example:

Nedra has their own discussion group for you to chat with:
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/NEDRA/info

Today belting multiple motors together is not as necessary because of
inovations/creations like hi-voltage packs powering new motor designs,
including the Siamese motor [
https://www.google.com/search?q=Siamese+motor
]. There are likely old-timers on the (above) forums for you to talk to
about belting electric motors.
