[Evolution] multilingual support

2001-12-05 Thread Gerhard Schuck

Hi,

first congratulations for Version 1.0!

However, I still find multilingual support in evolution unsatisfactory,
which wouldn't be astonishing for older applications, but definitely
doesn't fit to a potential killer app like evolution (at least compared
to mozilla and star office 6.0). If I want to read (and of course write)
Japanese mails I have to restart evolution with Japanese locale! Just
selecting the correct codeset doesn't even show Japanese correctly. If I
then want to write a mail in German (with umlauts) or sync my palm (with
German OS) I again have to restart evolution. Is this a bug or a
feature? I hope the first and not the latter. And I strongly hope that
it is not a problem of the underlying concept.

If I'm using the evolution-1-0-branch, I presume I should be using the
below branch of gal? If so, is this documented anywhere? The README
file says nothing about it. It is also out-of-date regarding gtkhtml.

I would agree with that. Ximian is a company that that needs to into
consideration such non-trivial details like revenue and saleable
products. Regarding the timing of the Connector announcement, I have no
problems with it. I am rather tired of hearing about great products,
commercial or open-source, eagerly bite my nails for 6-12 months, and
end up being disappointed with the thing when it finally does arrive.

Evolution is one of the best pieces of software I have seen on any
platform, and I am an ex-die-hard Mac user who has seen some awesome
applications. True, I still have some problems with Evolution (I still
can't get spell-checking to work), and some speed issues could be
improved, but the fact that Ximian put in all this work under GPL is
awesome.

In that spirit, I would volunteer for evaluating the Connector. We don't
have an Exchange server yet, but the beast is coming in the next few
weeks, and I was getting worried about the calendaring issue.

Just to clarify my feelings on this matter, I am a big supporter of
Ximian and of making money. That's why I am so concerned about Ximian's
image. They are the poster child for open source companies looking to
make a living by both creating software and at the same time supporting
the open source community. I am very aware of what happened to Eazel and
I don't want to see anything negative happen to Ximian.

[Evolution] Problem sending mail

2001-12-05 Thread Andrew Thiessen

All,

I have Linux RedHat 7.1, with the latest rev of Evolution. It has one nic,
with an IP of 192.168.0.2, and a nameserver of 192.168.0.1. The .0.1 box is
a Windoze machine with Internet Connection Sharing enabled. Everything works
fine, as far as web access goes, on my Linux box with the exception of
sending email. Everytime I try and send email, I get a 'RCPT TO response
error', no matter what SMTP server I use. On my Windoze box, I can easily
send mail with my Outlook client using the same SMTP servers. I am looking
for suggestions on how to debug this, as I am not sure if it is a Windoze
artifact, or that there is something wrong with Evolution or my Linux setup.
By the way, I can receive mail with Evolution no problem.

My understanding is that it is "drop-in compatible" in a marketing
sense, not a technical sense. I don't remember the details. (Someone
else suggested you needed an Outlook plugin on each client, and that

Openmail's selling point was that it was drop-in compatible with Exchange.
We considered suggesting a migration to it at one company I worked for.

Re: [Evolution] LDAP

2001-12-05 Thread Austin Gonyou

I have not been able to do this. I have tried and tried, but nothing
works. I ended up creating a contact under "Other Contacts" then I did a
search for " "(just a space), and then did ctrl-a and coppied them all
to "Local Folders->Contacts"(drag and drop). It also seems that I'm only
able to display 100 names as well, but when using openldap, I can see
more than that. Not sure if that's a bug or what. Either way, I'm happy
with Evo being so nice and all, but disappointed that I don't have the
following:

1. right click on any folder and have a "Mark all as read" in the folder
flyout.
2. Address book sources not working correctly. So if I say that my only
contact under "Other Contacts" is the primary adressbook source, then it
will perform lookups on that BEFORE my "Local Folders->Contacts".
3. More responsiveness from my timed checks for new mail. It checks, and
I may not see that mail is there for several minutes, unless I'm
watching my imap source constantly. (highlighted inbox all the time).

Other than that it's ok. The "mail" component does crash constantly
though,(only at work, never at home), and it seems to be related to
auto-checking for new mail.(I've timed it)

[Evolution] still problem with evolution

2001-12-05 Thread Victor Hadianto

Hi there,

I suppose I'm trying to understand (and getting some help would be nice) why
my evolution-mail refuse to work.

I upgraded to 1.0 via Red-carpet. Nice new splash screen, everything looks
find BUT I can't create a new email/forward email. Everytime i want to do
something to compose a new email/forward Evolution just hangs quietly.

I'm trying to backtrace what could possible cause this problem. Any help?

Ah yes I'm using Red Hat 6.2

Obviously we're only going to write additional proprietary connectors if
there's enough market for them that we'd make "lots of money" selling
them. (I have no idea what the threshold on "lots of money" would be,
but note that it does have to be "lots", because if we were only going
to make "a little bit of money", it would presumably make more sense to
have the hackers work on something more profitable instead.) Oh, or if
some company paid us "lots of money" to write such a connector, we
might, even if no one else wanted it, I guess.

And we're not interested in adding support for proprietary protocols to
Evolution itself (the free, core product); we'd rather perfect the
support for open protocols.

I don't know a whole lot about proprietary groupware server market share
beyond the fact that Microsoft and Lotus have almost all of it. So, at
the present time, Openmail and GroupWise connectors don't look likely.
Unless you happen to have $1M lying around. :-) OTOH, if Samsung goes
all out on Openmail and it becomes the next big thing, then maybe it
could happen.

Good point, My first thought was why had I not heard of it, but then I
guessed I missed it as I seldom view the ximian website and teend to
skim my lists, offten ignoring announcemts that sound like they are not
for me (I use pop mail, work form home and expect to stay that way till
I retire, hopefully next year, but more likely not)

But, lets all take a deep breath, Ximian is at heart a young company,
founded by young folks like us, staffed mostly by young people, it all
adds up to a lot of energy and little experience.

I rememebr some of teh early ximian staff posts to teh evolution list
were a bit high handed (you guys listen to us type mails) but they have
settled down nicely...

I feel like Ximian are here for teh long haul, and that there was no
intentinal deception, and the fact that it looks like there might have
been probably means that next time there wont be...

Live and learn.

And I love evolution, it is so needed!

Re: [Evolution] Printer settings

2001-12-05 Thread etienne sky

You should try setting the PRINTER environment
variable to "myPrinter" in your .bashrc or similar.
Then you can simply call lpr to print directly to your
selected printer.

You can set the PRINTER environment variable and lpr will use that as
its default printer. See if that works.

[Evolution] Ignoring changes with empty subject

2001-12-05 Thread Ben FrantzDale

I find the following 1.0 behavior to be a UI bug:

compose an email to someone (like yourself)
leave the subject empty
write "foo" in the body
hit send.
You'll get the "empty subject" dialog.
erase "foo" in the body and type "bar" instead.
Hit the send anyway button in the warning dialog.
When you recieve the email, the message body will be "foo"

Shall I enter this one into bugzilla?

[Evolution] using local mailbox format with Evo

2001-12-05 Thread mark

Hi,

This question refers to a moan I have about Evolution.
What I would like it to do (which pine can very easily) is
to be able to read my mail as it comes in rather than waiting for evo to
download the whole lot (sometimes 500 msg's a night), then remove from
the server and then read my mail.

I'm using pop and SMTP for receiving/Sending.

Ive tried specifying in my mail account on evo to use local mail
delivery, but when I click send/receive a box flashes on the screen so
quick I cannot read it ( I suspect it's tried to collect it and
finished).

Ive also tried setting it to: Standard Unix mbox spools (again its got
the correct path: /var/spool/mail/mark), but this does the same.

I can do the above in Pine (as Ive got a .fetchmailrc file).

What would I have to set in Evo to do this?

Thanks

Mark

Re: [Evolution] Strange bug in v1.0

2001-12-05 Thread Ettore Perazzoli

I'm wondering whether anyone else is able to duplicate the Evolution bug
I've now managed to dupe on two systems.

Totally reproducible for me too.  See #16676 on the Bugzilla.  Larry, Radek, please have a look, this is pretty bad. :-)

I *tried* to create my first HTML email this morning as I needed to
create a simple 2 column table and didn't want to have to attach a word
document.

I got all the table created, but before I sent the email I decided to
embolden the first row. I selected the text in the first row of the
table, right to left (i.e., started at end of second cell to the start
of the first cell) then selected Format->Style->Bold.

The entire content part of the email disappeared!

I tried various attempts at resizing the window, minimizing or rolling
up the window and restoring but nothing brought it back. I tried to save
it as a draft, which crashed Evolution's mail shell.

I tried to create a table tonight on my home system rather than my work
machine and trying to make the header row bold again also killed the
mail window, losing the content.

Can anyone else duplicate this to the point that it can be declared a
bug?

When searching some of the past threads I was under the impression that
Evolution would have the Notes conduit for the Palm Pilot in the 1.0 Release.
For me, it is the most useful function of my Palm Pilot, as I have hundreds
of system administration notes in an easily accessible format.

Currently Evolution doesn't have a Notes component so there is nothing to sync the Pilot with in the first place.  :-)

A Notes component is planned, though.  In the meantime, you can just the standard GNOME Pilot syncing conduits to sync up your notes.

2001-12-05 Thread etienne sky

Hi to all,

is there a way to play a sound or execute a command
when a new message is received (I have found no way
myself)? If not, could this feature be implemented
soon?

Perhaps an option could be added to the filters to
execute a command and my problem would be solved.
Otherwise adding an option to the "Receiving Options"
tab in the mail account settings would be good.

Thanks a lot,

Etienne

Re: [Evolution] 1.0 Configuration incompatability help

2001-12-05 Thread Ettore Perazzoli

I just upgraded from RC2 to 1.0 and the executive summary crashes
immediately every time. By moving my old evolution directory out of the
way and starting fresh, the summary seems to fire up just fine. *But* I
would rather not go through the hassle of re-creating ALL of my
SPAM/Maiing list/family folders/filters/rules. Can someone point out the
relevant section of what file from the original config to change so I can
use my old tree? Or, just tell me what files/directories need to be
copied over for that to work.

It would be useful to figure out what causes the crash first.  Can you please submit a stack trace into the Bugzilla and give us the bug number?

Besides that, you should be able to re-create your mail folder set-up by copying everything from ~/evolution/local, as well as ~/evolution/vfolders.xml and ~/evolution/filters.xml .

I've managed to get this mostly working, but it seems a little like a
black art :-)

For me, I needed to do the following:-
  - go to contacts
  - select menu item Tools->Addressbook Sources
  - Add a entry
  - Basic tab
- Account name is what you want to appear "Other Contacts"
  section of the folder bar
- Server name - name or ip address of your LDAP/exchange server
- I did *not* check the "My server requires authentication"
  - Advanced tab
- Port - unchanged (389)
- Search base - o=Intechnology;c=GB
- Search scope - Sub

The only hard part is the Search base, for which o=Intechnology is my
company name, and the c=GB is the fact that we are UK based. I got
these by playing with ldapseach and by mugging our exchange
administrator :-)

After that you get a new entry in "Other Contacts", search and stuff
basically works, although there is a (for us at least) a cap on numbers
of records returned. The a-z entries on the right hand side of the
contacts page do *not* work - a trace of whats being done shows they are
quesrying for something that exchange knows nothing about.

We use an exchange 5.5 server.

Nigel.

For me, it is the most useful function of my Palm Pilot, as I have hundreds

Are there any plans to incorporate the Notes conduit in future releases?

On the main CVS server this is fixed, so you may need to wait for

[Evolution] Strange bug in v1.0

2001-12-05 Thread Preston de Guise

Hi all,

I'm wondering whether anyone else is able to duplicate the Evolution bug
I've now managed to dupe on two systems.

Can anyone else duplicate this to the point that it can be declared a
bug?

(RH 7.1 with latest recommended RedHat updates, Ximian updates and
Kernel 2.4.16 in use on both systems...)

Cheers,

-Preston de Guise.

[Evolution] bug in "next unread message" ?

2001-12-05 Thread Stefan Palme

hi all,

maybe this is a bug, or I dont understand the behaviour...

when I have a folder with read and unread mails (all visible),
I can read one of the unread emails by clicking on it (of course).
when I want to read the next unread message, I type "N".

when I at first did not clicked on the first unread message, then
search wraps around when typing "N" and the last unread message had
been reached.

the (maybe) wrong behaviour is the wrap-around: when the very first
message in the folder is an unread message, the wrap-around does not
work properly - it jumps to the SECOND unread message in the folder.
to go to the first of these messages, I have to type "P".
