[Evolution] Evolution Mail and Office365 MFA

2021-08-25 Thread Sorin Srbu via evolution-list
Hey all!

My workplace will in a short while turn on mandatory MFA for all staff
accounts.

Since I work as a server-tech in a linux environment, using Evolution is
rather natural.
I've tried the Outlook Office365 web-version and find it rather limiting,
and not to say slow, as well as generally speaking cumbersome.
I have tried out Outlook webmail several times over the years, and the
longest I've managed to use it (with an increasing amount of frustration)
was just shy of a month.
Going back to Evolution after those experiences is like coming home and
finally being able to relax in the recliner with your feet up, and a cold
beer in one hand and the tv-remote in the other. :-)

I was kinda' wondering if anybody on this list is in the same position and
would like to hear about your own experiences wrt Evolution and
Office365/MFA.

Evolution works fine with Office365 & MFA. There's even a Wiki page
about it.

  https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Evolution/EWS/OAuth2

although this goes into a lot of detail, my experience is that it just
works if you configure Evolution to use Office365 OAuth2. However,
this may be dependent on which version of Evolution you use, so if you
need help you must include that information.

So, the dreaded day has come, and the IT-dept has enforced MFA for our
mail accounts.
Evolution Mail stopped working, more or less as expected.

The guide with tenant and app IDs is unfortunately unusable for me, as
the admins won't supply me with the needed IDs.

For all intents and purposes, currently Evolution is dead for me.
I've spent this morning with setting up Thunderbird and paid for the Owl
addon. IT lets me download the mail.
The calendar works so-so with Lightning and tbsync; I can see my own
personal calendar but not the shared ones I also need. I can possibly
tweak this with Davmail, but it's pretty hazy right now.

Hi,
did you try the offered IDs from the "Help..." links when setting the
OAuth2 authentication for an EWS account in the Evolution? If unsure,
it's in this section:
https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Evolution/EWS/OAuth2#Available_application_ID

Re: [Evolution] Evolution Mail and Office365 MFA

2021-09-02 Thread Michael Piko
I am certainly no expert but I did manage to get O365 working. To get
the tenant ID, I followed the instructions here:
https://blog.quadrotech-it.com/blog/get-your-office-365-tenant-id-in-one-simple-step/

So, go to:
https://login.windows.net/yourcompany.onmicrosoft.com/.well-known/openid-configuration
replacing yourcompany with company's domain name IE: abc.com.au
https://login.windows.net/abc.com.au.onmicrosoft.com/.well-known/openid-configuration

and look for "authorization_endpoint":https://.etc.
IE: "authorization_endpoint":
https://login.windows.net/b9239bdf-2e69-43c0-b8a3-dd058093cdf0/oauth2/authorize

which tells us that the tenant id is: b9239bdf-2e69-43c0-b8a3-
dd058093cdf0

Then, for the Application ID, I found:
The application ID refers to the application conecting to exchange. IE:
the ID specifically for GNOME Evolution EWS.

GNOME Evolution EWS: 751cf8be-ca07-484b-9308-fac4b9d85eff
GNOME Evoluation: 20460e5d-ce91-49af-a3a5-70b6be7486d1

That worked for me.

I'm tentatively optimistic that I made this thing work again after hacking
around a bit with the tentant and app IDs.
Will run Evolution as is a few days before I call it. :-)

Thanks all so far with the tips, hints and what not!

Feels positively awesome to be able to work in Evo again after a day with

Hmm, that's weird. The previously entered app id and redirect url were
not saved when I quit Evolution last friday. Had to reenter the ID:s
again and then it worked.

This isn't expected.
Anything I can do to make it stick?

Hi,
these things are saved into ~/.config/evolution/sources/. Hard to tell
what could cause overwrite of the settings. Those are surely not
overwritten to me and other users.

You can search for the related file in that folder, it contains a line:

   Method=Office365

and lower in the file the "Oauth2=..." values. You can verify, when
you make the changes in the Evolution, that the file is updated and
contains the right values.

How to check when the file reverts the changes I do not know. Or better
why it reverts it.
Bye,
Milan

Thanks for the hint!
Will check that.

FWIW, that whole folder is writable by my account/group.
Should those folders and files be owned or writable by somebody else?
Most of the files in ~/.config/evolution/sources seem to be 600.That's
as it should be?

On my working-from-home-workstation, the tenant and app IDs as well as the
redirect url stuck.

In fact, all the OAuth2 settings were already entered when I started
Evolution this morning. I don't remember having entered them on the home
computer though.

Are these settings pulled from Office365 somehow??

Hi,
does any of that require VPN or such, to reach the in-company servers?
That can be one of the reasons.

No, not at all. You either entered it some time ago or restored the
settings from a backup. I cannot think of any other way to get the
settings there.

Nah, no backup.
Selective memory loss then, it seems.
In any case, the thing seems to work.
I'm greatly thankful that, as well as for the help I got from you and the
list members - thank you!
