Re: [Evolution] attachment.dat: pptx showing as plain text attachment
Interesting: when I send a .pptx from Win7 using Thunderbird the pptx comes through fine but there's also an 'attachment.dat' that Evolution sees as a plain text file. I talked to my colleague who's an Apple expert and he says he never heard of any problems like that with Apple. And when I Google 'Apple mail and application.dat' everything seems focused on receiving stuff on Apple from Windows (winmail.dat). ___ evolution-list mailing list evolution-list@gnome.org To change your list options or unsubscribe, visit ... https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/evolution-list
Re: [Evolution] attachment.dat: pptx showing as plain text attachment
Argh! My apologies to everyone. It turns out that the emails I was having trouble with have two attachments and the second one is the proper pptx that does open in Impress. What screwed me up was that the drop-down list only showed the options for the plain text document so I never noticed that there were two attachments. Too dumb. What's happening here? On line I find discussion of things arriving at .dat files from Windows operating systems, but why would this happen from Mac Lion using the default Mac mail system? It doesn't happen when she sends the same attachment to my Win 7 box. And she's sent me Word and PowerPoint files in the past without this problem. Type this at a Shell prompt: xdg-mime query default application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.presentationml.presentation (all one line of course) The reply from xdg-mime tells what app is handling that MIME type in your environment. In my case it gives ark, which doesn't seem right (I use KDE). You can also use xdg-mime to set the app you want. Probably requires logging out and in again so your desktop will pick it up. Thanks. I'm still wondering why, if it's a MIME handling problem, Evolution isn't saying I've got this .pptx file but I don't know what to do with it rather than I've got this attachment.dat file that I don't know what to do with but think is a plain text file.
