Unable to access mail accounts using Outlook

2001-12-09 Thread kevin

I've seen this asked many times without a solution given but I need to
try.
I am having a problem where I am unable to access an email account using
Outlook 2000 or 2002.
When attempting to configure the mailbox, I get an error saying;

"The action could not be completed. The name could not be matched to a
name in the address list.'

I can create POP, and IMAP accounts but I am unable to create any
additional Exchange Server accounts.

Does anyone have a solution for this.

Note: The first account created was a Microsoft Exchange Server account
using outlook all others fail.

Thanks
Kevin

Is the problem you can not create Exchange accounts once POP3 or IMAP
accounts are made using Outlook?

I agree, unfortunately it is a manager... I need a way to log mailbox access
using another Exchange site's administrative account, my site's admin
account and to log permission changes on my site's recipients. Is there
something better than trawling through the NT event log?

Kind ladies and gentlemen of the list, looking for a little advice

A couple weeks from now, over the long Christmas weekend, we need to

our Exchange server off-line for a few days to perform some
maintenance...
In the time period it's down, nobody will be in the office so we
don't need

The only problem we can foresee is that incoming email can't be
received
because the Exchange server will be off and people outside the

get NDR's because their mail can't be delivered to us (for possibly
up to
three days)... What can I use as a temporary queue to hold all the

TIA for any suggestions!

You could install the IIS SMTP Service between your Internet and the
Exchange Server. See the FAQ Appendix H (I believe it is) for more

What do you mean that you can create POP and IMAP accounts? Exchange

Maybe I wasn't clear.

1. I am using Outlook 200 and 2002 to access email accounts on an Exchange Server

2. When Outlook asks for the type of account, I select Microsoft Exchange Server
3. After supplying the server and account names, I get the error:

 name in the address list.'
4. When I select POP or IMAP as the account type, I do not have the same problems.

I hope this clears up any confusion.

Thanks

Filter Sets and Users trying to bypass them.

2001-12-09 Thread bmurphy

I am experiencing a "high volume" of users attempting to bypass my filter
set by renaming the extensions. For example, I filter *.exe and about 15
other extensions. However, the users got smart at one point and renamed the
extension to *.txt. So, I had to start filtering *.txt files.

I'm to the point where I'm about to start filtering everything using a
default filter of *.*

I probably won't be able to retain this policy for very long so I'm
wondering how others have handled this problem?

I would like to filter all attachments but be able to designate certain
users to be able to send and receive certain files. Most Exchange AV
software affects all users. I'm hoping to see something like this in the
next build of Antigen (hint, hint).

Anyway, have not looked at Exchange 2000 yet so I'm not sure if it addresses
this type of issue or not.

Any comments?

Disabling access to an Exchange 5.5 server programmatically

2001-12-09 Thread Michael Brandon

Hi folks,

I wish to create a batch file which would allow us to disable user access
to an Exchange 5.5 server. The intention is that, if we get a virus
outbreak and don't want it spreading, we can run a batch file to disable
access to all our Exchange 5.5 servers immediately, leaving us free to
deal with the virus. A second batch file would then re-enable user access
to Exchange.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Michael Brandon

RE: Unable to access mail accounts using Outlook

2001-12-09 Thread Ed Crowley

On the same machine MAPI (Microsoft Exchange Server service) doesn't work
but IMAP or POP3 do?

What are you entering for the server and mailbox names?

Is there anything like a firewall or proxy between the client and the
server?

Subject: RE: Unable to access mail accounts using Outlook

Maybe I wasn't clear.

1. I am using Outlook 200 and 2002 to access email accounts on an Exchange
Server (2000).
2. When Outlook asks for the type of account, I select Microsoft Exchange
Server
3. After supplying the server and account names, I get the error:
"The action could not be completed. The name could not be matched to a
 name in the address list.'
4. When I select POP or IMAP as the account type, I do not have the same
problems.

I hope this clears up any confusion.

Thanks
Kevin

ESEUTIL /d does not defrag the PR1V.edb

2001-12-09 Thread Hong Bui

We have a Win2K SP2 member server with E2K standard server SP1. We have
reduce most of our users' email size considerably, still we received the
event error 445 Category: Space Mgmt: "Information Store (2704) the
database d:\exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv1.edb has reached a maximum of 16383MB.
If the database cannot be restarted, an offline defrag may be performed to
reduce its size." Then none of our users can not connect to the mail
server.

We tried to run ESEUTIL from safe mode with command prompt a few times, it
went right back up to 16MB after we rebooted the server. We tried to run
the ESEUTIL in server normal mode, with mail store dismounted and the
Exchange IS service stopped. The command we used is: ESEUTIL /d
d:\exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv1.edb.

What can we do to reclaim the free space or compact the size of the
database? Thanks in advance.

Re: ESEUTIL /d does not defrag the PR1V.edb

2001-12-09 Thread Daniel Chenault

After compaction, did the file show a significant drop in file size? How
soon after restarting the store does the size go back up? Does this server
host any foreign gateways (such as an IMS)? Perhaps there is a looping
message in the IMS (if present); this would certainly cause a ballooning
store. Perhaps a particular user or users are trying to sync an offline copy
of a large amount of mail, or someone is sending large attachments.

Re: Disabling access to an Exchange 5.5 server programmatically

2001-12-09 Thread Daniel Chenault

There is a KB article that gives a registry switch to restrict access to the
server. This could yield a batch file that roughly looks like:

And, of course, access could be given back just as easily by doing the
reverse.
