Subject:Need help with Exchange 5.5 to 2k with a few twists.

Here is the situation. Have an old exchange server from the old parent
company. Parent company has long since died and this little faction has
slit and prospered. So now we want to migrate to E2K, but its to a
different server (W2K AS) in a whole new domain that I have been asked to
build. And they do not want any traces of the old company's name anymore.
(understandable) Now is there a way I can move the mailboxes and not have
them hold onto any old info, like old inet addresses or do I have to
manually add each box and set up permissions?
The old exchange server right now has 2 internet addresses for each user.
One for the old domain and they added one for the new domain. These are
the issues that I speak of. Do not want to old domain internet addresses
moved over.

Need advice: Exchange 5.5 to 2k migration with a twist.

2002-04-05 Thread Jerry Jones

Here is the low down. Company splits from parent and takes the exchange
server with it and takes a new name. Makes the old exchange server work
for new domain. Now, new company wants to upgrade to exchange 2000. The
new server is in a new domain. They do now want any traces at all of the
parent company in the new server.
Here is my question. Can I move mailboxes to the new server and not get
any old info or do I have to maually make each mailbox new? I still need
to move user accounts into the new domain as well and am waiting till I
get some more info on the exchange upgrade.

OWA Problem Exch 5.5 sp4 with Win2k sp2 & AD (new to the list)

2002-04-05 Thread Steve Nash

I sent this yesterday, but I never saw it appear so I am trying again.

I have a strange problem. I installed Exchange Server on a Windows 2000
Server with Active Directory. When anyone uses the the Web Access they can
use their login name and see any email box they want.

Any suggestions on where to look? The bosses are having a fit that anyone
can see their e-mail from the Web Access. I am sure it has something to do
with permissions, but I am very new to Windows 2000.

Thanks,
Steve

sbs4.5 migration to 2k diff server new naming...

2002-04-05 Thread tony

I am running sbs 4.5 and looking to migrate to sbs2000 on a new server,
with different naming convention for both server name, domain, org etc.
I have read all the technet articles, but all say to keep same names..
use exmerge...or move edb's and run isinteg..
I am only interested in the Exchange stores and keeping the single instant
message size, is there a way of moving these.

Thanks in advance

Tony

We had similar problems with our SAN after adding some new disks and
assigning these to a separate non-exchange server - outlook started
giving
lots of 'requesting data from server' messages and other apps using the
SAN
for data storage also suffered poor performance.

A complete shutdown and restart of the SAN cured everything. A little
worrying, but that was six months ago and all is well and good since

Dan.

RE: Send mail from Public Folder - cannot

2002-04-05 Thread Ron Jameson

Ok, that worked now. But, is there a way to get the send address to look
like the email address from the public folder and not where it says from
"me" on behalf of the public folder email?

Excerpt from slipstick:
"If you want a user to send with a folder's address, the folder must not be
hidden.
...
Once the user has Send As permission, they can use View | From Field in
Outlook to display the From box and either click From to choose from the
Address Book or type in the name of the public folder or other mailbox. If
the public folder is hidden from the GAL, the user should go to the folder's
Properties page and add the folder's address to their own address book."

Now, this is a little confusing. I did try it with both OAB and PAB, both
SMTP and X.400 type addresses. It does not work with a hidden folder when
you create the address manually.

However, if you go through the steps in Q184545 to add the folder address to
your personal address book, it works just fine. One more thing to note is,
when I tried this I didn't have a PAB and it created a contact item in my
Contacts folder instead, which works just fine. So you still don't need the
PAB.

I do not use PAB except for the fact that according to info on
slipstick.com, you need the PAB to accept an email address on a public
folder if hidden in the GAL. I need to keep the email address hidden from
the GAL. If there is a method otherwise, I am ears. I did try before I
added the PAB and it still did not work.

Well, first off, sending as a public folder has nothing to do with your PAB.
Remove the entry from your PAB and then ask yourself "Why on earth am I
still using this beast if I'm on Outlook 2000?".

That settled, try unhiding the PF from the GAL. You should be able to send
as that PF then.

I have setup public folders with email addresses assigned to them. I wish
to send mail as the public folder but when I try, it says cannot send due to
send as rights.

In exch. admin for 5.5sp4, I have set myself permissions to SendAs. On my
outlook 2000 client, I have setup a PAB to accept the address used on the
public folder (the folder email addresses are hidden from the GAL). When I
go to properties on the public folder, I add address to my PAB (it does not
do it) so I manually add the email address to the PAB but still no good.

What the heck am I missing?

Ron

RE: Would two UMs play nice together?

2002-04-05 Thread Dupler, Craig

If you have a problem, it will be with the ownership of defined objects.
For example, two fax servers will both want to define how to handle a
freeform address that looks like a phone number. I can't think of any
specific conflicts that have to exist by definition in two UM systems, but
they are probably in there.

You may get to write the book on incompatibility issues.

PS: Rumor has it that ITG is considering a similar change, so MS may already
have some insight on this topic that is unpublished.

We have Octel Unified Messenger 4.00 running on Exch5.5 sp4/ NT4 sp6a.
We're testing Cisco UM 3.12 on another Organization in the same NT domain.

Before banging our heads on the wall[1], we wanted to find out if Octel and
Cisco UMs would even work together in the same Organization for the
transition? Or is it a either/ or deal?

It seems to me that with them using different connectors, there shouldn't be
an issue. And once in Exchange it's 'just another message' and up to the
client to display the message correctly.

[1] ain't that why they give us these nice soft partitions? Or are they
just getting us use to the idea of padded cells?

RE: AD built-in groups on other servers

2002-04-05 Thread Tom Meunier

There's no PDC in Windows 2000/Active directory. One of the roles
that's available in your domain is the PDC emulator role, but that's not
the same.

If you are asking "Why can't I use AD Users & Computers on my new
server?" then the answer is:
1.) It's not a domain controller (dcpromo will fix this up for you) or
2.) You haven't set up the Terminal Services client on it, and set your
server to do it. or
3.) You haven't installed the ADMINPAK.MSI on that server.

Pick one. Administer righteously thereafter.

RE: OWA attachments

2002-04-05 Thread David Florea

I've hit the same problem but only after an upgrade to Exch2K. Worse, it doesn't seem
to be a consistent problem, sometimes the user is prompted to save the attachment, but
then gets an option to open it anyway.

I found info from Microsoft that indicates a setting in "URLScan.ini" may fix this,
but I haven't even applied URLScan to my newly-rebuilt box. So I'm unsure what else
to do right this minute.

RE: OWA attachments

2002-04-05 Thread Petschow, Jeff

This Q did not fix the problem. When using Outlook 2000 on this computer
they do get prompted when opening an attachment to whether they want to open
it or save it to disk. When OWA is used on this computer they do not get
prompted. Only get save to disk. Any more ideas?

Thanks,
Jeff

Exchange 5.5 to ADC Replication

2002-04-05 Thread Pennell, Ronald B.

Has anyone had any problems with getting all the exchnage objects replicated
from Ex.5.5 to Active Directory?
I've been able to replicate users and containers, but, having problems
getting over the contacts "Custom recipients)
and distrib. lists.. I've tried several times in modifiying the replication
agreement in the ADC just to get the contacts
& DL's from my recipients folder over to the AD. Nothing happens.

Also, is there a way or tools to bring over the DL's properly in "mixed
mode" ?

Thanks

Ron

I have setup another server and can not see the built-in groups that are on

Or do I have to setup a local admin group on the new server?

RE: Exchange in it's own Domain

2002-04-05 Thread Vincent Avallone

Perception. It all comes down to perception. We were two companies
that merged and management feels we are not "one" company until the
computer network reflects our change. I could make a case about the
Exchange box, because it is in a domain that describes the technology we
develop.

While I've run separate "resource" domains for Exchange, it certainly

Exchange in it's own Domain

2002-04-05 Thread Vincent Avallone

We are in the process of reorganizing our domain structure, and
basically I need to pull the Exchange 2000 box out of it's existing 2000
domain and have it join a new one. Advice was given to me from this
list to copy all the mails to .pst and reload Exchange, join the new
domain and merge the mail back in. I am desperately trying to avoid
this.

Is there any wisdom that says to have an Exchange box in a separate
domain as the rest of the users? I need some ammo to recommend we leave
the Exchange box where it is. The only thing is I would have to have
the Exchange computer be a DC and have all the FSMO roles etc for a
domain of one.

I guess that qualifies as a BLB .. unless you use ArcServe 2000.
If you use that to back the server up .. what software do you use to restore
it?

Thomas,

You haven't answered Erik's question about custom forms. I have some more
for you:

- Does this happen with every message or just a specific one?
- Has anyone, or the clients themselves, been experimenting with
manipulating commandbar objects in Outlook?
- Did anything specific happen prior to the start of this problem?

Also, please quit snipping the thread when you're replying.

RE: Outlook 2000

2002-04-05 Thread Tener, Richard

By any chance is this person using outlook 2002 not 2000. In 2002 they will
give you a trial version until you enter the serail #. I think the trial is
for 40 days and after the 40 days the reply button will not work but you
will be able to read email. Double check to see what version you have./

RE: Requesting Data errors with SAN and Large Mailboxs

2002-04-05 Thread Atkinson, Daniel

We had similar problems with our SAN after adding some new disks and
assigning these to a separate non-exchange server - outlook started giving
lots of 'requesting data from server' messages and other apps using the SAN
for data storage also suffered poor performance.

A complete shutdown and restart of the SAN cured everything. A little
worrying, but that was six months ago and all is well and good since

Dan.

Restore your last good backup to your recovery server and run eseutil

RE: Requesting Data errors with SAN and Large Mailboxs

2002-04-05 Thread Jim Brady

Awesome information. Thanks for taking time to give some very helpful
details ... appreciate the tips. Will check the KB article out and will
follow from there.

Subject: Re: Requesting Data errors with SAN and Large Mailboxs

Perfmon should also reveal whether the SAN is somehow slowing things
down. I
know a SAN is supposed to be faster but that can depend on how it was
configured in the first place. I've seen a SAN being demoed that was
significantly slower than it should have been. After tuning the block
sizes
to more closely reflect the expected block sizes being written (the demo
used Exchange and this is a known size) the performance problems
disappeared. Or rather was alleviated; there were some extraneous
factors
that prevented the demo from giving a good result (not important at this
time). Bottom line is that to achieve high performance with a SAN
requires
more than plugging it in and turning it on. There is a KB article on
selecting block size according to size of disks and number of spindles
that
as I recall translates nicely to SAN configuration.

There are numerous objects under Object:PhysicalDisk that, in aggregate,
can
give a very good idea of how the disk storage subsystem is performing.
If I
were to choose one as a starting point it would be Current Disk Queue
Length. The Explain button for this says:

"Current Disk Queue Length is the number of requests outstanding on the
disk
at the time the performance data is collected. It also includes requests
in
service at the time of the collection. This is a instantaneous snapshot,
not
an average over the time interval. Multi-spindle disk devices can have
multiple requests that are active at one time, but other concurrent
requests
are awaiting service. This counter might reflect a transitory high or
low
queue length, but if there is a sustained load on the disk drive, it is
likely that this will be consistently high. Requests experience delays
proportional to the length of this queue minus the number of spindles on
the
disks. For good performance, this difference should average less than
two.

If this number were to stay high, or be on a ramp-up that never goes
back
down, this would indicate the disk subsystem is falling behind on
servicing
read/write requests (the above represents both). From here there are
other
counters that could be observed in order to narrow down where the
slowdown
is occuring.

As to your other point about all the mail being elsewhere besides in the
inbox. When a mailbox opens the root folder is enumerated - a large
number
of folders in the root would be a slowdown. Then the inbox is
enumerated;
ditto for a large number of messages. Then rules are fired and here is
where
other folders could be touched and thus enumerated. This could make for
a
very slow startup for Outlook. After startup the user might drag a
message
with the mouse to a folder; that folder gets enumerated if it hasn't
already, same if a rule fires. A new message sent would write to the
Sent
Items folder, enumeration again. A deleted message is sent to the
Deleted
Items folder and, again, more enumeration. I trust that answers your
question on that score.

RE: Moving Exchange 5.5 to new hardware

2002-04-05 Thread Damien D Keffyn

I have a similar situation to this.

I need to move (migrate) users from a 5,5 server to a 2000 server.
It is a 24 hour operation though I can afford some downtime in email,
the 5.5 server is 1000Kms away on a wan, the new servers are installed
and awaiting users to be migrated.

What is the procedure for this?

Old Domain is a WinNT 4.0 domain with a PDC & a BDC, PDC is Mail & File
server, BDC is File server.
