RE: Email not working b/n 2 Exchange 2000 servers

2002-05-06 Thread Julian Stone

If all users have the same SMTP address (@skilled.com.au) and you
haven't set each default recipient policy to be non-authoratative with
an appropriate connector to the other server, then you will end up with
the mail loop condition you are seeing.

ticked.

SMTP@skilled.com.au

I have looked at Q288175/Q284204 which is a close but not exact match.
Eg,
 - Numerical Code: 5.4.8
First Available: Exchange 2000 Service Pack 1
Possible Cause: Warning of a looping condition. One known case is that
one of
the recipient policies includes a local domain that matches the FQDN
of an
Exchange server in the organization. When the Transport Categorizer is
processing mail destined for a domain that matches a Exchange Server's
FQDN,
it will return NDR the message with this error.
Troubleshooting: If it was caused by having an Exchange server's FQDN
in the

Old Exchange Client (was RE: Best way to clean up corrupt calendar folder?)

This is when the old Exchange Client comes in handy. You could have
exported the calendar to a PST and then deleted the calendar folder. The
next time you started OL, one would have been created.

It also sounds like you need the CDO hotfix for Exchange. BB support
should be able to help with that.

Subject: Best way to clean up corrupt calendar folder? (on server)

I had one user who could not syncronize her calendar over the air with
her blackberry. The errors in the event log basically said that the CDO
stuff could not access the calendar. Email was forwarding just fine.
After trying all sorts of things on the blackberry server, I finally
created a new mailbox (with a different username) and synced the
blackberry up with that (the calendar worked fine).

I then exported everything from the user's mailbox to a PST file (so I
could delete the mailbox and create a new one just like it). After
exporting all the mailbox contents I tried deleting everything from the
calendar folder (by using view by category and deleting everything).
After doing only that (i.e. not yet creating a new mailbox) the
blackberry still would not sync with the calendar (over the air). The
calendar appeared completely empty from an outlook 2000 client. When I
tried via OWA there was an appointment still showing up in the calendar
(yikes).

After deleting the mailbox and creating a new one with the same alias
and email address, the old data was imported from the PST and the
blackberry syncs up fine now.

My only question was if there was some better way of fixing the calendar
short of what I did. I had tried all of the /cleanfreebusy
/cleanreminder /cleanshedplus options in outlook with no improvement.

Can't move multiple message within Outlook??

2002-05-06 Thread Valerie Smith

Exchange 5.5 SP4
Lately multiple Outlook 2000 clients have called that they are not able to
move multiple messages within their mailboxes or to public folders. I
have confirmed that it is indeed a problem. It seems that any message
with an attachment, big or small, can only be moved one at a time. Trying
to move two or more messages with attachments fails. Messages without
attachments do not seem to be having a problem. Furthermore, when I tried
to move messges by archiving the folder, archiving failed with a message
that said it was unable to move them. I used to be able to grap every
message in a folder and move it without a problem.

1. Has anyone else experienced this, and do you have a solution?
2. Could it be that my the virus software is trying to scan these messages
with attachments and is causing the failure? I am using Groupshield for
Exchange. I have been using this for several years, and this problem
never before existed. I am going to follow up with them as well.
3. Could any of the latest MS security patches be causing this type of
problem?
Any help is appreciated
Thank You, Valerie

Email Archiving

2002-05-06 Thread Christian Schlosser

Hi all,

The company I work for has recently decided to look at a message archiving
solution for the crazy amount of email being stored.

We're currently running Exchange 5.5 Server, Exchange client 5 with about
8000 mailboxes. The solutions we're looking at are Enterprise Vault from
KVS, Archive One from C2C and eCon from Ixos. We have a shiny new IBM Shark
that isn't being used very much right now. We're eyeing it up for email
storage.

I was wondering if any of you had any advice / opinions / experiences /
praise / horror stories for any of these products, or any other archiving
solution.

Thanks!

to delete. How can I delete all the mailboxes easily?

Public folders vanish when moved

2002-05-06 Thread Leo

I have an Exchange 5.5 and Exchange 2000 server in the same
organisation/site.

I am trying to replicate the Exchange 5.5 folders over to the Exchange
2000 server.

I add the exchange 2000 server to the "replicate to" section of the
replicas tab in Exchange 5.5 admin program.

When I set the E5.5 public folder to replicate to the Exchange 2000 server
all appears to go well but it does not appear in Exchange system manager
under public folders ??

If I take it one step further and then remove/rehome that public folder
onto the Exchange 2000 server by removing the exchange 5.5 server name
from the "replicate to" field I then loose sight of the public folder
completely

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Leo

Good decision on the DirSync Server. That'll let you put each postoffice in
a separate container, if you wish. That's what we did. I thought it was a
Good Idea at the time, but now I'm not so sure it was as necessary as I
thought.

If you haven't though of it, don't use the "Automatic Post-Office Creation"
feature to set up your external postoffice routing definitions on your MS
Mail POs. That'll work only if you have one MS Mail PO as a "hub", with
other POs AND the Exchange Server as "spokes". With only 4 POs, you could
probably set them up manually without getting confused or bored.

Good luck. Let us know how much fun you have...

WMI Error

2002-05-06 Thread Bryon Barkley

WIN2K (SP1) E2K:

I am getting WMI errors when trying to access the monitoring tab while
using the ESM, which is preventing me from to add different services to
monitor. It's not on every server just some and not all from the same
site. The WMI services are running on all servers.

The error is telling me, "You will not be able to see the current status
of the monitored resources and can not add disk or service monitoring
resources." Gives me the following ID no: c1038692, Exchange System
Manager.

Anyone seen this before? And of course, searching technet, proved
fruitless.

Thanks all!

RE: Information Store and Single Instance Storage.

2002-05-06 Thread Chris Scharff

If it were me, I'd start creating all new users in the default recipients
container and use restricted address book views and standard ABVs to mimic
what containers give you now. I'd stop transferring users between containers
ever until we were ready to move to E2K where the become irrelevant.
Unless your boss is good with the additional hardware requirements and costs
that exmerge (or a similar 3rd party tool) is going to involve.

They're all trying to fix their broken networks, and it's taking them
awhile. That isn't part of the core curriculum, unfortunately.

RE: Information Store and Single Instance Storage.

2002-05-06 Thread David Gibbons

Chris,

Currently all of our _wonderful_ users depend on the containers to help
them figure out who's at a center or to send email to everyone at that
center and we do not use address book views at this time. We have a high
transfer rate here and every time some moves from one center to another I
have to move that mailbox. Also we're 62 centers strong and are looking
at adding 30 more centers before the end of this year. The container's
are a pain right now and will become a nightmare by the end of the year.
Also, my boss doesn't like it and I have to give him what he wants I
just wish his previous staff set it up correctly.

Now, if we drill everyone down to the root anytime I have a new user hire
or a transfer I just need to change the information in their profile and
can manage all the mailbox resources via an address book view instead of
hard moves and complicated scripting.

RE: Information Store and Single Instance Storage.

2002-05-06 Thread David Gibbons

Chris and Martin,

Thanks for the information. *sigh* My manager's going to hate me. But
that's what a test lab is for right?

As for E2K,

I've yet to really look at it as a possabiliy so my first question is...

Can I run E2K is it own domain with a DC blah blah blah... Leaving my
current NT 4 domain intact and setup a trust between the 2 domains, add
the E2K server to my current site and move all the users to it?

We're not quite ready to move to 2000 yet so I need to work between the
lines.

Compaq r3000
2 PII 333
1.5gig Ram
1x 4.1gig OS mirror
1x 9.1gig Log mirror
4x 18.1gig Information Store Raid 5
Windows NT 4sp6
Exchange 5.5sp4
Information Store Size 33.2gig (Single Instance) 51gig uncompressed. 768
mailboxes in information store Container Scheme Container for each location
e.g. -Center Location 1 --User --User --ETC -Center Location 2 --User
--User --Etc

Test Lab Server 2
Compaq ML530
2 PIII Xoen 1gig
2gig Ram
1x 18.1gig OS Mirror
1x 18.1gig Log Mirror
4x 36gig Information Store Raid 5
Windows 2000sp2
Exchange 5.5sp4

We wish to use Ed's server move method to replace the current hardware that
our exchange server is sitting. We also wish to move all user out of there
current containers and set them in the root of the exchange server and use
address book views for our GAL(ie the right way) Within Ed's server move
method I can use the server to server move and not lose single instance
store (according to Microsoft Q white papers) with all email on the old
server and retain my 33.2gig database on the new server. As soon as I use
Bind view or exmerge to get all the mailboxes out of there containers and
into the root I lose single instance store and have a 50gig database on the
new server. Does anyone know how to move mailboxes out of their containers
and into the root without having to use a .pst and losing single instance
storage?

RE: Cerification question

2002-05-06 Thread Filipe Joel de Almeida

There is a list just for MCSE and another for MCSD. I'm subscribed to
both, but there hasn't been any post in the last 2 months ;)

RE: Metric reporting

2002-05-06 Thread Filipe Joel de Almeida

Yeah, it imports the GAL without any problems, and it processes the logs
without returning errors, but the reports come out all wrong. The thech
support said that version 2.* of MELIA only supports up to Exchange 5.5,
and there will be a new release of MELIA in the second semester of this
year that will fully support Exchange 2K.

IMHO its one of the best reporting tools for exchange. It has many kinds
of template reports, and the fact that it's built on an ACCESS database,
allows the administrator to directly manipulate the data, and create
it's own queries, or even link the database to some billing software, as
it was done in a company where I usued to work.

Each department was monthly billed by the amount of mail that it's users
sent. And it was all fully automated! Just wonderful!

Hmmm, I just downloaded a trial version of Melia and it seemed to have
talked OK to an Exchange 2000 server. Well, there is nothing very
sophisticated in talking to the message tracking logs I guess. But it
downloaded the GAL correctly too.

However the reports look very confused and many of them do not display
anything.

Too bad. It is a great tool for 5.5.

We wish to use Ed's server move method to replace the current hardware
that our exchange server is sitting. We also wish to move all user out of
there current containers and set them in the root of the exchange server
and use address book views for our GAL(ie the right way) Within Ed's
server move method I can use the server to server move and not lose single
instance store (according to Microsoft Q white papers) with all email on
the old server and retain my 33.2gig database on the new server. As soon
as I use Bind view or exmerge to get all the mailboxes out of there
containers and into the root I lose single instance store and have a 50gig
database on the new server. Does anyone know how to move mailboxes out of
their containers and into the root without having to use a .pst and losing
single instance storage?

RE: IS Crashing, HELP

2002-05-06 Thread Smith, Ronni

I wouldn't doubt that needing 512MB min paging space might be true for
Windows 2000 but, for what it is worth, for those still running on NT4 - I
used to run Exchange 5.5 SP3 on a Pentium 180 with 192MB ram running NT4
SP6a with the paging file set to 384 max and min with about 25 very heavy
users (half gig mailboxes & shooting messages with big attachments back and
forth to customers all the time etc.) and I didn't see this issue. That
machine was also my BDC and main print server.

The only differences I see between the question poster's set-up and my
set-up are: I got a new box before I got to SP4 so never had SP4 on that
machine, and I had the paging file set with the same value for max and min.
So I would suggest the following not necessarily in this order: perfopt,
reapply SP4 for Exchange, reapply SP6a for NT4, and lastly, set the paging
space to 512 for both max and min values (although that may not make any
difference but I have seen it recommended to avoid fragmentation of the
paging space).

More helpfully perhaps, here is a possibly/probably useful Q article:
Q172813 "XADM:Troubleshooting High CPU Utilization By Store.exe"

There are also possiblities such as Q215924, Q230285, Q304228, and Q159297
depending entirely on the particular situation.

All found using a search of "store.exe cpu utilization" (sans quotes) on
Technet (cd version not web version).

I would run forestprep against the Schema Master DC and domainprep against

If it's attachments, try Q300904.

Perfmon

All,

I have an X400 Bridgehead (5.5 SP4 with 21 X400 connectors) that for some
reason can no longer run Perfmon against the MTA or the MTA Connections
objects. Actually the objects don't even show up in Perfmon anymore. This
happens whether running perfmon local or remote. Any ideas?

TIA,

1) about 3.2 gigs
2) 35, all heavy users
3) nothing, honest. :) It did this a few times last week, then was fine for
about 6 days, now the same problem.

This particular machine is overdue for a Win2k upgrade as well, but this
problem seems to be Exchange related (and not OS) from what I can tell.

With Win2k anything less the 512 for the virtual memory can cause
problems. That's just what I've found on my own and I'm sure other
people are going to flame and say that they get away with using a meg or
so and so. But it's a suggestion and take it at that. I usually set mine
to a gig total. Min and Max

I could set it a lot higher, but what would that help? I have 256mb,
planning to upgrade to 512 physical, and we've only got about 35
mailboxes (I would consider everyone a "heavy user" though).

Thanks

RE: IS Crashing, HELP

2002-05-06 Thread Warren Cundy

1) about 3.2 gigs
2) 35, all heavy users
3) nothing, honest. :) It did this a few times last week, then was fine for
about 6 days, now the same problem.

This particular machine is overdue for a Win2k upgrade as well, but this
problem seems to be Exchange related (and not OS) from what I can tell.

Nothing in the event logs that helps. I think I will re-apply Sp4 the next
time this problem crops up (running ok so far today).

RE: IS Crashing, HELP

2002-05-06 Thread Warren Cundy

I could set it a lot higher, but what would that help? I have 256mb,
planning to upgrade to 512 physical, and we've only got about 35 mailboxes
(I would consider everyone a "heavy user" though).

Thanks

Never mind. Figured it out. One of my administrative groups does not have
any servers and happens to be first alphabetically. Promodag did not like
that and crapped out right away. After I renamed the admin group and dropped
it down to the bottom of the alphabet Promodag ran fine

3) What has changed on your server (I assume it wasn't doing this before

Hi All,

I'm hoping you can help me. This is what happens:

We're running Exch 5.5 Sp4 on NT4 Sp6.

I re-boot the server (or restart Exchange services). The server begins
to chew up memory gradually (pretty normal for Exchange). It goes
beyond the physical ram on the machine (256) but doesn't hit the virtual
total (512), usually ends up somewhere in between (much higher than
normal for daily use in our system). It goes on like this for about 90
minutes.

Then the STORE.EXE process goes to 50% CPU utilization (much higher than
normal for daily use around here). Outlook clients stop responding,
much panic ensues.

Now I can stop/start the Exchange services and the problem clears up (at
least temporarily). However it takes a long time for the IS to shut
down.. watching task manager, it gradually gives up all of the memory it
has used and then restarts. It seems very slow (takes 5-6 mins to give
up ~200mb of ram).

Currently it seems to be running ok, store.exe is taking up a lot of
ram, but looking at the "mem delta" counter, its both using it and
giving it back (normal Exchange behavior). This is after 3 restarts
following the scenario above, which also happened earlier last week.

So, my questions are:

- can anyone help me find out what is going on?
- what kinds of tools or methods are people using to diagnose this
stuff?

I'm at about the stage of re-applying Sp6 for NT, Sp4 for Exchange, or
both, just to see if that will help.

Thanks for any help.

as the database grows, the report generation will slow...when my database
reaches 900MB, everything seems to run slow..so then I basically prune that
database to only include the last 4 weeks or so..

We had a similar problem about a month ago. The support I received from
them was outstanding. Here is what they suggested I do:

Try using our ftp site instead of the http site: If you right mouse click on
the Network update path, select ftp and it will automatically change to the
FTP site for download for your engines and then click update now. If that
does not work then modify the registry value that holds the timeout
setting:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Sybari Software\6.0\EngineDownloadTimeout

This value is measured in seconds and is set to 120 (decimal) by default.
Changing it to 300 (5 minutes) usually resolved any timeout problems. Keep
in mind this registry change, the Antigen and Exchange services DON'T
require restarting.

The default timeout has been changed to 300 seconds in Antigen 6.5.

Hope this helps.

Subject: Antigen Question

Hello Antigen users,

I have Exchange 5.5 on NT 4 server. I am using Antigen 6.2 for Exchange.
We've been using Antigen for over a year and just about 2 months we started
having problems with automatic update feature. It runs into problems with
renaming directories. To fix the problem, I have to stop Exchange, reboot
the server and then rename the directories. It's very frustrating because I
can only do this on Weekend. I've tried their tech support and they keep
giving me directions for manual update (mentioned above). I've even
uninstalled and reinstalled the software but with no use.

Any help will be appreciated.

the primary account back to the old one or check the permissions on the

I changed the primary windows nt account. When I tried to change it back to
the original person it works but that person cannot get into there e-mail
folder, it says they do not have permission. It shows there name as the
primary Windows NT account. Does it take time to sync?

RE: Antigen Question

Not really. I have noticed, however, that the Antigen 6.5 client seems to run
noticibly faster when it's running on some machine other than the server.

We had a similar problem about a month ago. The support I received from
them was outstanding. Here is what they suggested I do:

Try using our ftp site instead of the http site: If you right mouse click
on the Network update path, select ftp and it will automatically change to
the FTP site for download for your engines and then click update now.
If that does not work then modify the registry value that holds the timeout

Re: SMTP 550 Error

2002-05-06 Thread Chris H

not an XCHPRO ;) DNS is prob my weakest area, where I suspect this is
headed.
We also have a similair problem sending email to aol.com addresses. No
denial message they just never get there (no jokes about sending mail to
aol.com; I know, I know ;)

AOL said it was due to 1 server that did not have a PTR record associated
with it. So I had that created by our ISP and it worked for a week and then
died again. These are the problems I love. ;)

Thanks!

I'd say it's a DNS problem, as the 216.xxx.xxx.xxx does not accurately
reflect the public DNS info for ourdomain.com. Unless you're just
munging the info. It's public info anyway - don't munge it, it makes
troubleshooting a PITA.

Sounds like they're blocking you.
Try connecting via telnet on port25 to see what gives.

RE: SMTP 550 Error

2002-05-06 Thread Tom Meunier

I'd say it's a DNS problem, as the 216.xxx.xxx.xxx does not accurately
reflect the public DNS info for ourdomain.com. Unless you're just
munging the info. It's public info anyway - don't munge it, it makes
troubleshooting a PITA.

Non-authoritative answer:
ourdomain.com MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = ourdomain.com

ourdomain.com internet address = 161.58.193.161

Acitve Dierctory Connector Version

2002-05-06 Thread Pennell, Ronald B.

I Installed the ADC from the Ex2K CD and setup my connection agreements I
noticed that all the "mailbox's" for users
in the "receipients container" came over as "mail enabled users".. Mailbox
info came over OK for users in other containers.

Was this due to not having the ADC from the SP2 CD installed? If so, can I
just reinstall SP2 to get the latest version?
Perhaps it is just another problem -

Help & Thanks

SMTP 550 Error

2002-05-06 Thread Chris H

I am getting this error sending to one domain:

The original message was received at Thu, 2 May 2002 13:05:49 -0400 (EDT)
from mail.ourdomain.com [216.xxx.xxx.xxx]

- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

(reason: 550 Access denied)

The definition I find for SMTP 550 is that the user is unknown or the
account does not exist.

However, if I send from hotmail or yahoo as a test, the mail gets to the
user no problems. Access denied does not sound like an error with locating
the user name/account by their recieving server. it sounds more like they
are not accepting incoming mail from us for some reason. I do not see our
domain blacklisted in ORBS or anything similair using Sam Spade to check
their databases.

Re: Exchange 2000 and MS Mail

2002-05-06 Thread Karen McLaughlin

I didn't realize it was a service in 5.5, either. I guess I haven't
done DirStink with MS Mail since 4.0 or 5.0...

The client definitely wants to implement dir sync, and we're going
to rearchitect it so that the Exchange server becomes the dirsync
server and that the 4 MS Mail PO's are requestors. Eventually, all
sites will be W2K/Ex2K but not for a bit...

Cheers,
Karen

RE: Metric reporting

2002-05-06 Thread Andrey Fyodorov

Hmmm, I just downloaded a trial version of Melia and it seemed to have
talked OK to an Exchange 2000 server. Well, there is nothing very
sophisticated in talking to the message tracking logs I guess. But it
downloaded the GAL correctly too.

However the reports look very confused and many of them do not display
anything.

Too bad. It is a great tool for 5.5.

RE: Antigen Question

2002-05-06 Thread Andrey Fyodorov

Speaking of 6.5, I installed it on one of my servers and the Antigen GUI is
extremely slow. Is that normal?

NT4.0 upgrade to W2k

2002-05-06 Thread Pennell, Ronald B.

Preparing to upgrade my NT4.0 SP5 / Exchange 5.5 server SP4 (1st server in
site) to Windows 2000. Why, it is the only remaining
DBC in my W2K domain and need to go to "native mode" for exchange 2000
server rollouts.

Anyone have any problems with preforming upgrades on a Exchange Box?

Should I be at SP 6a on the NT side?

Also, running a site connector to another site running Ex5.5...

Will I need to rebuild the site connector when I install my 1st Exchange
2000 server OR after removing the
1st Ex5.5 server that connects both sites?

Does the site connector stay in-tack and not affected by the ADC until I
remove the 1st server?

Thanks

Ron

No, it will not require Win2k SP3. I am running E2k SP3 on my box just
fine with only Win2k SP2. In order to run E2k on a .Net server,
however, it will require E2k SP3.
