RE: PST as an archive?

2002-07-01 Thread Hurst, Paul

James,

Probably they suggested it as it is a cheap way to archive Email (other
serious Archive Email solutions cost in the region of £10,000+).

Cheers

Paul

On another list I am on it is suggested that outlook mail be archived to
.pst files and burned to cd's Is there any good reason to do this? My
understanding is that this is not a wise idea and that there are better ways
to archive mail stores. It seems that at least once a week someone on this
list is trying to deal with a corrupt pst file.

Exch2K SP2, Win2K AS SP2, 2-node MSCS Cluster.

I am in the process of setting up a new Exchange server and I notice that
each of the Protocols folders (HTTP, IMAP4, POP3, SMTP) has 5 stopped
virtual servers and one functional virtual server. I don't see any way to
remove the old servers and I have no idea where they came from. I also
notice four instances of every public folder name in First Storage Group |
xxx Public Folders | Public Folders.

The only thing that occurs to me is that we have dropped and rebuilt the two
cluster nodes several times, including at least three complete cluster
rebuilds during which we wiped the data directories, deleted the two servers
from AD, and reinstalled Win2K etc from scratch. In every case that I know
about, we just killed the servers without uninstalling Exchange.

I guess I have three questions:
1. Were we complete imbeciles for killing the servers the way we did? I
realize *now* I should have removed Exch beforehand. Nuts.
2. Was the abrupt removal of the previous clusters the cause of our grief?
3. Is there anything I can do to remove the dead virtual servers?

Hey all. I have this weird thing going on -

Outlook 2000 or XP. Exchange 2000 SP2.

A user has full control permission to another mailbox. User goes to
Tools->Services->Microsoft Exchange Server->Properties->Advanced->Add,
Tools->Services->and
adds the other mailbox.

Now when the user clicks on Inbox for the additional mailbox, only one
message is displayed on the right side, even though there are many
messages there. Now, if the user clicks to sort messages by date or by
subject, or by sender, all messages become visible.

Has anyone else seen this?

TIA

Re: PST as an archive?

2002-07-01 Thread Tony Hlabse

PST's have discussed many times. Although a bad idea, for reasons debated
many times here, they do have there place at times. The only one that comes
to mind is for people leaving the company and need certain email items to
take with them, should management approve of. That is to export data to a
PST for there new place of employment and burn it on a CD. Not sure if this
has any relevance too your pst issue but it to me in an email today. Beware
as it will/may not wrap completely. It is for merging pst files.

if you're only using it as an archive, it's probably fine. you won't, however, be
able to open or run the file from the CD, as it will be read-only. See

RE: PST as an archive?

2002-07-01 Thread William Lefkovics

.pst's are not good as primary message storage, due to their many
limitations.
http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq_appxf.htm

But they are fine as a redundant archive. To be opened in Outlook, they
can not be read only (Outlook needs write access) so, while stored on a
CD, they will have to be copied to HD and have the appropriate attribute
changed to allow access.

.pst's are not bad archival storage.

Outlook driving my users crazy

2002-07-01 Thread Andrey Fyodorov

Hey all. I have this weird thing going on -

Outlook 2000 or XP. Exchange 2000 SP2.

A user has full control permission to another mailbox. User goes to
Tools->Services->Microsoft Exchange Server->Properties->Advanced->Add, and
adds the other mailbox.

Now when the user clicks on Inbox for the additional mailbox, only one
message is displayed on the right side, even though there are many messages
there. Now, if the user clicks to sort messages by date or by subject, or by
sender, all messages become visible.

Has anyone else seen this?

TIA

2. Restore DB on recovery server without hard recovery (last backup set
- eseutil /cc)

3. Copy production tlogs that were created since the last backup to the
templog dir on the recovery server (same as the location of the
'restore.env' file)

4. Run 'eseutil /cc' manually.

The eventlogs indicate that these additional tlogs have been played, but
the data in these logs don't show up in the db the above is based on
Q312635.

I'm wondering if this is a problem with the GUID on the restored db
being different than the GUID for the same db on the production
server (maybe??)

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions that you could provide that
would point me in the right direction.

Thanks.

RE: Mailbox limits survey

2002-07-01 Thread Couch, Nate

Most of our customers get their first warning between 30-35 MB. Probihit
Send is around 40-50MB. We tend not to utilize the Prohibit Send and
Receive (yet). There are those exceptions from the executives who tend to
get whatever they want since they sign the paychecks. Massive pain if they
need to synch an OST.

All clients O2K.

Some clients authenticate on W2K domain, but most authenticate
on local/legacy domains (Novell, NT 4.0) for mail.
(That is, the local domain account is designated as Full Mailbox
access and Associated External Account.)
All mailboxes are on W2K servers in the same domain.

Problems viewing public folders for most clients authenticating
on foreign domains.

Solution?
Do we need to have everyone who needs public folders
authenticate on W2K domain, will trusts do the trick?

Are you doing any SMTP proxying or filtering on your firewall or are you
using a SMTP gateway product? It sounds like the server sending you the
email is trying your first MX and then trying the second MX record and
it then goes through.

If this is a case (you can verify with the message headers) check your
first SMTP server to make sure that it isn't doing any SMTP based
filtering on that server. You also may be able to turn up logging and
search for communication with the incoming server.

ssfhs.org MX preference = 20, mail exchanger = relay1.iquest.net
ssfhs.org MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = ais.smtp.ssfhs.org

MX record pointing to your mail server possibly. I had this exact
problem
only I was trying to send to an organization. Some mail would go
through,
some mail would fail. Turned out my ISP DNS servers had two MX records
for
the recipient and one of them was wrong. It only happened on this one
particular domain. It is possible the organization in question for you
has a
problem on their DNS finding your correct MX server. After doing some
recursive queries it is finally finding your MX server. Just a thought.

Good afternoon,

Outlook 98 Exchange 5.5 sp4

I have a user that claims they are not receiving eMAILs from one person
outside the organization. I emailed that
outside person and asked for a reply. I cc: my Yahoo account so I could
see
if I was having networking problems.
I have checked this person's mailbox and there is no messages from this
outside person.

The outside person received my eMAIL and replied to all. My Yahoo
account
got the reply just like that but my
Outlook account finally got the message after 4 1/2 hours... WOW. What
is
up with that? I have checked
my queues and nothing is backed up. I can send eMAIL to my Yahoo

from my Outlook account and vice versa
and the messages are received on a timely bases. I have checked my logs

see nothing strange.

Has anyone had a similar problem? Please help me out.

I know I have posted here before, but I have wiped my slate clean and am
starting over. Right now I have an exchange 5.5 server in domain OLD. I
have a 2000 server in domain NEW that I am going to put exchange 2k on. I
will be using a different organization and site name from the 5.5 server.
There is a trust between domains OLD and NEW. I have tried many different
things to get this done but run into security or permission problems here
and there. So now, what would be the best way to install exchange 2k in
the new server in the NEW domain to prepare for this? I figure to just
install with the new org and site. Also is there anything I must or should
do before or after the initial installation of exchange 2k? Just looking
for a little guidance since going on my own and learning as I do is not
working out the best so far.
Thanks.

Moving exchange stores

2002-07-01 Thread MS Exchange Discussions

Good morning,
We have added a new storage box in our E2K cluster environment. We have
relocated the Information Stores (priv, pub.edb/stm), transaction logs
and system path... The one thing that we have not done is to move the
MTA database. According to Q259896, it's pretty much straight forward.
Has anyone done it before that runs E2K Cluster? Are there anything
else that I need to move before I can extract the old storage box?

Thanks in advance.

In order to create new folders there usually we do (this happens at very
rare times though) change the PF container in information store site
configuration, create the folder, change back.
Since I had to add a second and third server I've got some problems with
that. Situation is, only one server has a public store, no replication. Yet
sometimes it does happen we have to wait a while and/or change that setting
on more than one server, even if the outlook client creating the folder does
use a mailbox on the PF server and the container change has be done on that
server. Now the situation became even worse, as those PF simply won't create
in that "other" container, but only in Recipients, even after changing that
setting, waiting and double checking the new setting has propagated to the
other servers ecc.

Any idea what could be going on ?

Thanks
Heiko

Hi All,

I need some guidance for upgrading a small WNT4/EX5.5 network to a
W2K/E2K network, moving to completely new HW for the servers. I have
read/studied a number of MS docs on upgrading, but it's still not clear
what is the best approach.

RE: Imap settings for exchange server

2002-07-01 Thread Drummy, Allan

I have found a similar problem to this in the past and that your alias and
nt account name need to be the same.

Subject: Imap settings for exchange server

I am trying to use my outlook express clients (mac and Pc) as IMAP
accounts. I keep getting access denied messages...

Access is denied.

Configuration:
   Account: 10.0.0.5
   Server: 10.0.0.5
   User name: frank ralston
   Protocol: IMAP
   Port: 143
   Secure(SSL): 0
   Code: 800cccd1
What needs to be done in order for me to correct this...
