RE: Global Address Lists

2002-08-16 Thread Julian Stone

The AD attribute that may help you is: msExchQueryBasDN

Bear in mind that this has to be set for each user individually, and
the form it takes restricts the view to the OU the user is a member of.

Restricting address book views will not keep users from using owa, nor
will it keep owa users from searching the entire global address list.
The restricted address book views in ESM only apply to mapi. (pop and
imap users also if OUs are setup correctly).

Assuming you want to leave the http virtual server running, you could
use adsiedit to restrict the address book views for owa users. Search
for "Restrict Address View" in the kb for instructions. There should be
a decent article about hosting email for virtual organizations in that
same search.

Good Luck.

RE: Exchange 2k SMTP

2002-08-16 Thread Daniel L. Miller

It's unable to send. The Outlook client places the message in its Outbox,
and it dissappears quickly. It then shows at the Exchange server, in the
virtual smtp server queue. After a certain time period (relatively close to
the timeout and retries specified), I get an unable to deliver message
notification.

Well, normally there's nothing you have to do to an E2K server to allow
users to /send/ internet e-mail, it does that out of the box. What error
messages are users receiving?

RE: Global Address Lists

2002-08-16 Thread Chris Scharff

I'll give you my favorite dumbass example of political reasons to use
restricted ABVs.[1]

Executives don't want to be e-mailed by lowly forklift operator, so they
create an ABV where forklift operator can only see other lowly peons, and
their immidiate supervisors in the GAL.. executives get a GAL view where
they can see everyone.

That being said, there are plenty of legitimate reasons one might want to
use restricted ABVs in a corporate environment.. like when contractors are
brought on for a project and need only basic e-mail access, and giving them
access to the entire GAL represents a security risk.

[1] _Thankfully_ this example is not something I was ever forced to
implement for my or any other company, but I know it's been done.

I too have multiple views, but did not think of the hosting angle.
Political forces definitely are a pain in the outbox.

Can't you hide system objects? or are you alluding to something other
than objects that should not be recipients showing up in plain view for
all the world to see.

RE: Schedule + service cannot start.

2002-08-16 Thread David N. Precht

This event is generated when the Service Control Manager cannot properly
operate a service. The name of the service and the error generated by it
are displayed in the event. So, the 7023 is not specific to a particular
service, or let's say it may occur no matter what service is failing.

First of all, thank you to all that offered me advise on my mail
migration. I am nearly done. But I am getting an error on my exchange
5.5 server. Event ID 7023. The MS Schedule Free/Busy connector service
terminated with the following error: The service did not start due to a
logon failure. Now I just finished moving everything from an old server
to this new one. It is running fine otherwise. I checked to make sure
that the service was using the same account that the old server was
using and it is. And I have the password correct. I also tried the local
system account and that did not work either. I look in exchange manager
and under the new server the connector is not listed under recipients.
When I went to the public info store properties for the new server and
went to instances to add it, it was already listed. How can I get this
to start properly?

anyone with a cluster?

I've got E2K SP2 running on W2K AS SP2 in a two-node cluster. There's
also a 5.5 and another E2K server in the site. The E2K box is the SRS

Every three to five hours, I get a pair of event 1025s that look like
this:

Type: Warning
Computer:

An error occurred on database "First Storage Group\Public folders".
Function name or description of problem: FEqEntryId

MS is on the case but they haven't yet determined what's causing it.
They
*think* it's safe to ignore but I'm just curious as to whether anyone
else sees it. Thanks.

Thank you all for your quick responses.
If restricting the view in the GC restricted the object access, wouldn't
that mean I shouldn't be able to log in on the OWA? (I"m new at this, so

I think I can create multiple GALs & restrict the access to the lists. As
long as a user is in one of them they appear to be able to log on. I'll
have to check tomorrow. However, this would put me in the position of
having 1 person in a GAL if they are not in any other group.
I'll check out the links this weekend as well.

RE: Global Address Lists

2002-08-16 Thread Crump, Jay

I too have multiple views, but did not think of the hosting angle. Political forces
definitely are a pain in the outbox.

Can't you hide system objects? or are you alluding to something other than objects
that should not be recipients showing up in plain view for all the world to see.

Depending on the Exchange installation, potentially LOTS, especially in a

RE: Global Address Lists

2002-08-16 Thread Baker, Jennifer

Add them to the NewGal group?? I don't see the problem. Are you suggesting
that you do not want to add them to this group and you need another way for
the person outside of the group to be able to logon?

If the mapi user does not have rights to view their user object within the
global catalog then they cannot use mapi.

RE: Global Address Lists

Oh... btw I think an explanation of how the GAL for a user is determined is
described in the E2K FAQ at www.swinc.com (er... if not, it's my fault cause
I was supposed to write it). The GAL is really more of a virtual construct
than an actual object. Dontcha just love Exchange. Man, I can't wait to
answer this question 47 times at MEC.

RE: Global Address Lists

2002-08-16 Thread Chris Scharff

The Exchange provisioning whitepaper at www.microsoft.com/isn and I think
one article by David Sengupta (same source as last time) go into some detail
in setting up restricted address book views in E2K.

Without the ability to view an address list in which their mailbox appeared,
a user would have to use the Exchange DN of their mailbox to create their
profile (or at least that was the case in 5.5 and I think it still holds
true) which is not a terribly user friendly string to enter into the mailbox
name field in Outlook.

So, basically all users need to be able to see some address list (of which
they are a member) in order to easily resolve their name in the GAL... it
could potentially be an address list of one user. In general, one would want
to automate the creation of an address list for a group (company for
example) as part of the provisioning process.

Outlook searches the GAL for a match when it is trying to resolve the user. User must
be visible in a GAL.

Subject: E2K CDO 1.21: Strange Msg -- Can't read oMsg.Text

Hi All,

I've got a very strange situation with reading a msg in an E2K mailbox using
CDO 1.21. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone can offer any suggestions
or point me to resources/forums that can help.

THE PROBLEM:

I have a few msg coming in to an E2K SP2 mailbox that, while are perfectly
readable by Outlook 2000, generate the following error when I try to
retrieve oMsg.text using CDO 1.21:

===
OLE IDispatch exception code 17389 from Collaboration Data Objects:
The client operation failed.
[Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store -
[E_FAIL(80004005)]]..
==

I can retrieve other props like oMsg.subject without any problem.

The only common characteristic of these problem msg that I have been able to
determine so far is that they are all:
-- replies
-- come from latin america

The same code works fine for 95+% of the inbound msg, and has been working
for several years.

This same msg opens fine in OL2000. The body text looks fine, no garbage or
other problems. Based on OL, it "appears" to be plain text (Format menu has
"Plain Text" checked). Here are the relevant Internet headers from OL |
View | Options:

MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: multipart/mixed;
boundary="=_NextPart_000_0050_01C242D7.DE716350"

RE: one user can't login to OWA

2002-08-16 Thread Bleimehl, Susan DPI

Jay, I have the same issue with a person, but first name last name, full
internet address, etc--all have not worked until I tried your suggestion of
HER alias in and my credentials in the userid/pass. It did indeed return her
mail.

So what does that tell me?

can you put HIS alias in, and then put your own credentials in user/pass?
will owa return contents of his box then?

RE: Time Sync

2002-08-16 Thread Ken Cornetet

There is already an excellent win32 port of the ntp daemon. See
http://www.five-ten-sg.com/ bottom left hand side of the page. I've been
using this for quite a bit to sync NT4 servers and workstations.

It probably would work on 2000 as well, but I just use the "net /setsntp:"
command for the DCs. Workstations and member servers sync to the DCs.

open-source. Why not wrap a nice Windows GUI around that?

The problem is that the Windows Time Service is a SNTP client. Besides
being
not a very accurate client, it isn't secure. I was thinking about a NTP
v4
client because of the security features.

The windows 2000 time service does this automatically. Just run
   net time /setsntp:time.berkeley.netdot.net
on the Windows 2000 domain controller you installed first, and then
restart the Windows Time service. All other windows 2000/XP machines in
your domain will eventually (within a day or so) get the time from it,
and keep in sync.

The internet host in the command above is a stratum-2 time server in
your general area. A list of these stratum-2 public time servers can be
found at http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/clock2.htm. Your ISP may
or may not have an NTP server, and it may or may not be reliable, you
might want to give them a call to find out.

If you've got NT4 and Win9x clients out there, see the great info at
http://www.ultratech-llc.com/KB/?File=/timesync.txt for info on syncing
their clocks.

HTH,

There may not be much to fix. Just a WAG-- is the guy's user name 'mike' or
some such? And do you happen to have a 'mikem' or other user name similar to
his? If this is the case, you are basically running into outlook name
resolution issues. If you set up a new Outlook 2000 client and put his
username in and do a check name, you probably get a list of names to choose
form, correct? I ran into this at my previous job, and the only thing you
can do is have him type in enough of his name to differentiate himself from
other, similar users. Instead of typing the full firstname, lastname that
Jennifer [1] suggested, just use his first name and a couple of letters-- it
should still work.

Subject: one user can't login to OWA

Here's my setup:

A Win2000 AD domain. I have one internal Exchange server, 5.5 SP3, with the
stores and all. We have OWA installed on our webserver (Win2k).

I have a user who can't login to OWA. The browser comes up with the "OWA
was unable to get to your inbox" error.
Outlook 2000 is no problem for him. He has all the right permissions (in a
desparate attempt, I elevated his priveleges to almost God didn't work).

The recipient's properties all look ok... I checked them against a user for
whom OWA works fine.

The webserver Security log shows a Successful Network Logon for that user.
The Exchange server doesn't report anything to the logs.

Any steering in the right direction would be a great help

Subject: upgrading to exch 2000 with move mailboxes methode
Importance: High

Hello Everybody !

DC : Win2k
Exchange : 5.5sp4 on NT sp6a

We want to use the move mailboxes method to upgrade to exchange 2000. My exchange 2000
and 5.5 are in the same site.

Now, I'm looking for removing the exchange 5.5
The Q316886 talk about removing the last exchange 5.5 srv another Kb talk about
removing the first Exchange 5.5 (q152959) I also read about reassigning site roles.
(q152960).

I have only one Exchange 5.5 so my first is also my last :-)
IS it correct to "just" using the removing the last exchange 5.5 SRV or do i have to
use the other Q also ?

THanks,

If he cannot log into OWA on any other machines, then his account might be
corrupted. I know you say he can access Outlook 2000, but there still could
be some corruption there. Also, check the permissions on his account and
make sure they are set to "User."

upgrading to exch 2000 with move mailboxes methode

2002-08-16 Thread Frédéric Médery

Hello Everybody !

DC : Win2k
Exchange : 5.5sp4 on NT sp6a

We want to use the move mailboxes method to upgrade to exchange 2000.
My exchange 2000 and 5.5 are in the same site.

Now, I'm looking for removing the exchange 5.5
The Q316886 talk about removing the last exchange 5.5 srv
another Kb talk about removing the first Exchange 5.5 (q152959)
I also read about reassigning site roles. (q152960).

I have only one Exchange 5.5 so my first is also my last :-)
IS it correct to "just" using the removing the last exchange 5.5 SRV
or do i have to use the other Q also ?

THanks,

I am surprised the mailing list accepted the HTML message

Your first and most egregious error is sending to other email administrators
in HTML with a $deity-forsaken stationary. That error is followed closely by
not including the text of the undeliverable mail messages and explaining
what changes you felt were necessary to the SMTP virtual server.

What could I be doing wrong?

A lot, I know.

I'm trying to send internet e-mail through my Exchange server with Outlook
clients.  I thought I had a SMTP virtual server and a SMTP connector
configured correctly, but obviously, I'm mistaken.

Specs:
Server running Win2k, Exchange 2k, ISA.
Connected to internet via dial-up, non-static IP.

Trying to send e-mail results in outgoing mail sitting in a queue, until
finally it gets returned as undeliverable.

All the RPC ports. Thousands of them. Unless you restrict your Exchange server to only
use specific RPC ports. There is some reading material about this on Microsoft Support

RE: Resource Scheduling

2002-08-16 Thread Crump, Jay

your total number is around the same as two of my main offices. we have two offices
that implement resource scheduling/automatic booking in this manner - both have 150
users or more in each location.

limiting who can modify/update meetings to just the executive admins has worked out
well. we used to use the autoaccept script in one location and actually had two
people who just maintained a public folder calendar in the other location.

both sets of users have migrated nicely to the autoaccept that's built in to the new
mapi client.

users will be assimilated! good luck,

J

Jeffrey,

Just grant a small number (maybe just admins) to be able to modify meetings. As long
as a user has accepted meeting request, they can double click the meeting in their own
calendar and tell who booked the meeting.

Granting permissions to modify/update meetings to just a select few takes care of
headaches you might see if all users had this ability.

An no, you can't publish a mbx'es calendar to a public folder. How big is your
environment?

Sorry Jeffrey. Didn't completely read your post. As users create new appt requests,
then assign the room mbx as a resource, they should see an 'Attendee Availability' tab
on the new meeting request. As long as you have free/busy published for this mailbox,
users should be able to see when free time is available for the room.

Outlook will only use the primary PF tree... if your pub.edb is hosed and
you want to start over fresh, you can stop the services, move the existing

RE: Exchange 2k SMTP

2002-08-16 Thread Chris Scharff

Well, normally there's nothing you have to do to an E2K server to allow
users to /send/ internet e-mail, it does that out of the box. What error
messages are users receiving?

RE: odd profiles

You can likely remove them unless you're running some 3rd party product
which made them and requires them... Exchange doesn't even require a mail
client to be installed on the server.

Need Detective Help on Exchange Error

2002-08-16 Thread Tom Gilbert

This is driving me crazy. I have tried to figure this out by the logs but I cannot.
Please look at this and my logic and tell me if this makes sense
or do I need to turn something else on to figure this out.

A. Every morning I as Exchange admin I get three Noticifications of e-mail
failures, two inbound and one outbound
I believe these are a virus or worm, but I cannot figure out which machine to check
The messages all reference either [EMAIL PROTECTED] (which is Host unknown)

B. I have checked my tracking logs and these bad addresses show up in five records

C. I think I am only interested in tracking something going out as the infected

everyday to send a message to the bad address.

D. So I look at the logs for the 1010 records

E. I understand from MS each field has a meaning (and unfortunately some can be

I have tried to separate the fields by returns

RE: Resource Scheduling

2002-08-16 Thread Crump, Jay

At most customer sites, we use Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition and Norton

RE: Resource Scheduling

2002-08-16 Thread Rob Hackney

I had a similar environment in my old job which was on an exch5.5
server. If i needed to check how had sent the meeting requests, I think
the way I did was just to log on to that mailbox using the mail client
on the server and checking the inbox. I'm afraid I can't remember
exactly how I did it but it was similar.
There are probably better ways of doing it tho.

while logged on with the conf room profile, go to Tools, Options,
Calendar Options. Click the Resource Scheduling button, tick the first
two items here that have check boxes (automatically accept and
automatically decline conflicts). Make sure to set up permissions
correctly.

Then take a look at the Free/Busy button - default is fine, but you
might want to publish more than 2 months of free/busy for these conf
room profiles.

Subject: Resource Scheduling

I am wondering what people are doing for resource scheduling. I have set
up our conference rooms as users in E2K SP2. I set the resource
scheduling options to auto accept meeting requests, Deny conflicts and
deny reoccuring meetings. The problem I am having is how do I make the
information about who has the room booked? I would also like to send
back a link to veiw this conference room schedule when a meeting gets
declined. I have looked at some of the auto accept scripts but they are
only for Exchange 5.5. Thanks

RE: Resource Scheduling

2002-08-16 Thread Crump, Jay

Sorry Jeffrey. Didn't completely read your post. As users create new appt requests,
then assign the room mbx as a resource, they should see an 'Attendee Availability' tab
on the new meeting request. As long as you have free/busy published for this mailbox,
users should be able to see when free time is available for the room.

RE: Resource Scheduling

2002-08-16 Thread Crump, Jay

while logged on with the conf room profile, go to Tools, Options, Calendar Options.
Click the Resource Scheduling button, tick the first two items here that have check
boxes (automatically accept and automatically decline conflicts). Make sure to set up
permissions correctly.

Then take a look at the Free/Busy button - default is fine, but you might want to
publish more than 2 months of free/busy for these conf room profiles.

Hi all,
can anyone shed some light onto the following...
On my exch 5.5 sp4 server, if I look at the profiles on the inbox mail

ExchangeAdmin 0x04f24b
ExchangeAdmin 0x3b9d4a

I don't believe they are that important but are they? and can they be

Exchange 2k SMTP

2002-08-16 Thread Daniel L. Miller

Please help a duffer who's trying to set up a small network.

I've got Windows 2000 server running - local domain working fine.
Exchange 2000 server running - local intranet mail working fine.
Server connected to internet via dial-up connection and ISA 2000.

Outlook 2000 clients - intranet mail working, or "private" internet e-mail
working.

Question:
What do I have to do to let an Outlook 2000 client, without an internet
e-mail service configured, send internet e-mail through the Exchange server?
I've tried fiddling with the various connector & virtual server options and
so far I'm not accomplishing anything but increased frustration. I do have
a local DNS server configured (every "server" is running on the same
machine). Internet browsing is working fine as well.

Please pretend I'm a moron (I sure feel like one at this point) and give me
a step-by-step.

broken public store

2002-08-16 Thread Chris Levis

This isn't an emergency... This is just a machine that I use at home for
playing and testing things. Backups didn't exist:

So somewhere along the line, bad things happened to my Exchange 2k public
and private stores, as well as the logs.

Using eseutil, I was able to repair the private store. I got it mounted and
now Outlook can connect and OWA works.

However, I tried to eseutil the public store and after alot of hair pulling,
I couldn't get it repaired. I do happen to have a .pst backup of the public
folders (basically, my wife's recipes and her family contact list).

So I went ahead and created a new Public Store... but how do I tell Exchange
to use this new public store for Public Folders?

One final question:  The repaired private store doesn't mount automatically;
when I reboot (which is often - again, this is my playground). I have to
manually mount it. The "Do not mount this store on startup" option is not
checked.

What a mess!

Default Mailbox Stores E2K Enterprise

2002-08-16 Thread Crump, Jay

What's the official recommendation for the default stores on the Enterprise version?
I currently have 10 enterprise exchange in production - none of which use the default
store. They (default stores) are pretty much all original size (minor mishaps with
other admins inadvertently placing mbx'es in the wrong place), so I'm not concerned
about the space I could gain back

BUT - are the default stores removable? Safe to move the SA's mailbox to another
store?

By having users delete content from their mailboxes and then running the
eseutil utility to remove the whitespace generated by deleting.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q192185

You can also use the mailbox management features of exchange to force
deletion of old items to create white space.

If you have enterprise, you can move the contents to priv2.edb. ;o)

He means that if you have the Enterprise version of E2K, you can have multiple stores.
