Re: Unix/Linux Client for Exchange

Hi,

You can use Ximian Evolution http://www.ximian.com/products/evolution/ with
their Exchange Connector http://www.ximian.com/products/connector/ for
Exchange 2000 or 20003. The client is free, but the Connector will cost
you. I think it costs around $25US per client.
I use Evolution on my linux desktop, and it has a very Outlook-y feel.

Cheers,
Allison W.

Greetings!

Is anyone familiar with a client that will interact with Exchange on the
Unix/Linux platform (specifically Mandrake)? I am looking for the same
functionality (or similar) as to Outlook.

Any comments or thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Their website says they support Mandrake 9.1. Maybe Ximian have just not
updated their site to include 9.2? Wasn't 9.2 only released in October?
Did you ask one of their sales people?

What are some other options for blocking SPAM?

 Hello all

We have recently upgraded from exchange 5.5 to 2000. Friday we placed the
OWA server is outside the firewall and switched it to do the routing of
smtp email. Since we made the switch Friday night, the custom recipients
receive duplicate emails only from emails generated outside the company.
Emails generated from within the company are not duplicated.

Any ideas on what is happening?

Hi Ed,

I did search for *.ost and *.pst, and then *.*st and then *st* but I found
nothing Outlook related. And I did search with show me hidden files.
Then I went into his C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\* and manually
checked the folders for anything, just in case it was called something
different. There weren't any files that looked like they could contain his
30MB or so of mails/contacts/etc.

What happened was this, and I have no idea how it was working:
After the mailbox was deleted, the user noticed some kind of error message in
Outlook (of course he doesn't remember as this was in December), and choose
to work in offline mode. My boss (who deleted the mailbox) nor the user
removed the Exchange services from his service list in Outlook. He was
working in offline mode, had no *ST files, and had no AD User
account/Exchange Mailbox.

Instead of entering user/domain/password in his Outlook, I hit cancel, and the
emails were there. I jsut exported all the data, and then entered Outlook
with his user/domain/password to import the data.

Where does Windows XP store (by default) PSTs and/or OSTs?

Somehow the user had been working in Exchange offline-mode, even though

 he
was just hitting cancel. When I had given the proper login info (after
creating the account), I was getting his empty mailbox folders.

Since he had no PSTs or OSTs, where is the data?
Before I created his account, the System Manager showed no Mailbox for
 him.
After it was created, it showed 1 or 2 items.

Does XP store this offline info as another file type? I have never

this on Win2k + Outlook 2k, only this Win XP + Outlook 2k machine.

I closed his Outlook, and re-logged him in. Now, his inbox is empty and
all of his old mails are gone. On the Exchange server System-Manager, I
see his mailbox has only a few items.

What mistakes did I make? I had no idea he still had the Exchange service
this whole time, because he was not a real user. His mailbox never
appeared in the System-manager, yet his mails were obviously stored there.
From what I could see on the server, he was a contact with no Mailbox. I
searched his harddrive for both a PST and OST and found neither.

How do I get his emails back?

 Client: Windows XP Outlook 2000

 Allison

Well done!
Its funny that one of the only times I could help on this list, it has to do
with Linux...

 Roger,

This is fantastic, though I do feel that I am cheating!!!

A massive thank you for your help and also Allison, Jacob, Bill, Jim,
 Mike, Allan and Christopher.:)

 To summarise my problem:

I needed to get email sent to a certain domain masqueraded, that is the
header AND the envelope. To do this I had to use SENDMAIL. I used the
latest version of REDHAT8.0, SENDMAIL 8 and the m4 compiler.

The product, Webmin, a free open source package helped a GUI bred
 administrator get through Linux commands.

 The following url's helped greatly:-

 www.webmin.net
 www.redhat.com/support
 www.sendmail.org
 www.siliconvalleyccie.com/sendmail.htm

 For m4 compiler:-

 http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/rawhide/1.0/i386/RedHat/RPMS/m4-1.4.1-12.i3
 86.html

 more detailed info:-
For some strange reason, installing a custom REDHAT8.0 machine in text
only mode with just SENDMAIL and its required dependencies screwed up
the m4 compiler. The symptom I got was that every time I tried to
compile a macro file I would get 'command not found'. To resolve this,
I downloaded the latest m4 compiler from the REDHAT rpms download area
and installed the package with the -U switch (upgrade). This then
 brought everything back together.

Why not download and install webmin to configure your sendmail?
 Personally
I use Postfix on my Redhat 7.2 box. I have found that I like Postfix a
 LOT
better than sendmail. And I use webmin on both Linux, AIX, and FreeBSD
 to
do a lot of the configuration.

 I have the Bat Book.

I just miss the basics of LINUX really. For example, I have installed
REDHAT8.0 and I cannot compile macro files to make changes to the
 sendmail.cf
file. It says silly little things like 'command not found' etc...

I only installed LINUX a few days ago, so we are just getting to know

Low on disk space

2003-01-22 Thread Allison M. Wittstock
Hi,

My server's tape drive broke, and I had to order a new one. In the meantime,
the Log files in \MDBDATA have grown to almost fill up the disk. I am using
Ed Crowley's Never Restore Method, so I wasn't too worried about users losing
emails.
Now that I have the tape drive that I can re-install, the harddisk is almost
full and has only 200MB free. I have a question: Can I safely reboot the
machine without any problems? Or will it complain about not enough disk
space? As a temp backup, should I take the Stores offline and copy the whole
MDBDATA directory to another server? I plan to do a full backup once the
tape drive is installed, and hopefully it will flush the log files. I'm just
worried that maybe the server will not start...

Thanks,
Allison

Re: Outlook Client and Language

The folder names are in the same language as your version of Outlook used that

See if this will help you to rename the German top-level folders to the

Error when attempted to reconnect a Mailbox.

2002-11-26 Thread Allison M. Wittstock
Hi,

I'm having a problem with 1 user account. I deleted it, then re-created it (in
the AD User and Computer manager).
Now, in the Mailbox Manager, I see the user's mailbox listed, but with a red X
on it. If I choose to reconnect it, I receive the exact error shown in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303311 (Q303311)

However, there is no existing contact that has the same Simple Mail Transfer
Protocol (SMTP) address as a mail-enabled contact that already exists in
Active Directory.

I did _have_ a contact with a _similar_ user name (meaning their first and
last names), but the SMTP addresses were completely different.

I deleted this contact anyway, to see if I could re-connect the other mailbox.
I still receive this error message and cannot reconnect the mailbox.

What can I do now? I would somehow like the mails in the mailbox and restore
this user.

(Windows 2000 SP3/Exchange 2000 Outlook 2000 clients)

Allison

Are you guys the in-house mail admins? I would think that its part of the job

Or at least, that is what my users would say if I tried to charge them 50 Euro

curious how you get away with that.

$100.00 it doesn't matter really what you charge. No one wants to go to

Re: Can't activate Net Folder in Outlook 2000

2002-11-08 Thread Allison M. Wittstock
Hello,

You cannot use Outlook's Net Folders feature if you are also connecting to an
Exchange server; it's either one or the other. If you aren't using Exchange,
then contact me off list. I had a lot of experience with them before
switching to using Exchange.
BTW: The Net Folders feature was not implemented in Outlook 2002.

Here's a good page about them with some links to MS articles:

 Here's my take:

A quick peek a CDW shows SBS at $1277
 http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.asp?EDC=274287. Microsoft is
offering a $500 rebate if you can read the SBS sales literature and answer
20 some-odd questions. That puts the price at $777.

I'm not familiar with the MCSP program, so I cannot comment on that. You
are also forgetting about Exchange CALS at $70 each.

You are correct in that growing past SBS is somewhat painful (I might argue
with the 10-20 times more expensive. Exmerging 50 mailboxes is not that
painful...), but I would maintain that if a company finds themselves
outgrowing SBS, then it should not have been put in in the first place.

Yes, Linux is a viable option for small companies (big ones, too). It does
 have some drawbacks, though.

 1. Support. Finding a local consultant to support a Linux system is going
to be harder than finding someone to support Microsoft products.

 2. Third-party applications. Going Linux defiantly puts a company outside
the mainstream and limits third party server applications like mail
filtering, antivirus, web surfing control, etc.

Running a business on Linux servers is, IMHO, very a very viable option.
But, it pretty much requires a resident propeller-head to smooth over the
rough spots. Most small companies (where SBS is targeted) just can't afford
a full-time system admin. They would much rather farm it out to a
 consultant.

Let's not forget that Exchange is more than email as well. There's nothing
in the open source arena (that I know of) that can provide the same
 functionality that Exchange provides.

I'll conclude stating that IMHO, SBS is an excellent value when applied in
the appropriate environment - that is a small company (5-15 employees)
needing at least file-sharing and Exchange and with no resident system
 admin.

Subject: RE: Moving E2k storage group to new Server

Thought long and hard about letting this go, but where is the fun in that?

First, to answer the migration piece of this. The only option I can think
of at this time would be to treat the SBS Exchange system as a foreign mail
system, meaning export and import mailbox data to migrate. Migration costs
will be 10-20 times what it would be to simply put another server in place
and move users. But, if is your only option...

 Now on to the fun...

 SBS License: $1,499.00 (5 clients)

 Real W2K Server license: $1,199.00 (10 clients)
E2K Standard Edition: $1,299.00 (can always be upgraded to Enterprise if
 needed)

Now, realistically, if you are a small little shop, this is all the
Microsoft products that you need and so for 1.67 times the amount you
eliminate all of the limitations of SBS and have actual, real products
 versus cripple-ware.

But what about ISA? Don't need it. Go get a Linksys box for $100 for your
firewall and it is wide open outbound.

But what about SQL Server? IF you need it, then it's $1,499.00. Otherwise,
 you don't need it.

If you are a small business, you can get cripple-ware for $1.5K or actual
software to run your business for $2-4K. Under the first scenario you are
setting yourself up for failure and under the second, you have invested
just a little more money but have primed your business for growth.

And if you are such a cash-strapped business that you cannot afford the
extra grand or two, then you should probably be looking at free software.
Put a Linux box up, done. It's cost $0.00.

And, just for fun, 2 MCP exams, ~$250 and an MCSP license ~$2000.00. So
again, for just a few extra (hundreds) of dollars you get lots and lots and
lots of actual software versus cripple-ware.

So where is the business case for SBS? There isn't one. It is for
closed-minded, all I know is Microsoft, lazy people that do not think far
enough ahead to keep them from running into closed doors. Installing SBS is
setting yourself up for failure, period. I have seen it time and time
again. It is Microsoft cripple-ware, plain and simple. You get what you pay
for and you get what you deserve when you don't plan ahead.

I am more than willing to admit I am wrong, so show me a business case
where SBS is the RIGHT solution. And by that, I do not mean the lowest cost
solution, because Linux has that one well in hand. I mean, when all the
pros and cons are analyzed, that SBS is the winner. I honestly have never
 encountered it.

You know what they say: opinions are like, well never mind...

Personally, I think SBS is a fantastic product, provided you keep it's
limitations in mind up front. Yes, it would be a pain to upgrade, but

Well.. I'm assuming E2K (don't know enough about E55 and eseutil)... you
  have a couple questions/problems.

  1. If you have already mounted the store and did not have the tlogs you
copied in the templogs dir... then Andy is correct... too late. You
should have unchecked 'last backup set' during the restore... let the
restore run, then copied the tlogs into that templogs dir that you
specified during the restore... then ran eseutil /cc by hand.

  2. To check the tlogs (and I _think_ you would have had to have done
this with the tlogs in their original place and with the original db...
but not sure)... eseutil /ml ... I believe.

At this point, you could do the following:

  1. restore that backup to an offline exchange server and do the eseutil
  /cc there...

  2. exmerge out the data however many days back you want to go.

I think that you will find that if in fact you have a bad tlog.. you
will only be able to recover mail up to that point in time...

Doubles of all Outlookfolders

2002-09-23 Thread Allison M . Wittstock

Hello,

So I used Exmerge exported all of my user's data and re-imported them on the
new server. Worked fine. Except...

I went to my users' PCs and opened their Outlooks (v2000) and tested that
everything was OK (I only have 8 users so this wasn't a big deal, and I needed
to set a registery key on their machines anyway).

There was however 1 laptop user who had his machine at home, so I couldn't
login to his machine and test his mailbox. So, I opened it on a workstation
(running Office 2000 English version), saw everything was OK, and logged out. I
didn't notice double objects, though.

This morning he says he has doubles of all of the Outlook folders: contacts,
calendar, notes, etc. One has the English name and the other is the German
name. All new emails are going in the Inbox (and not into the Posteingang
were all of the old mails are), and users trying to read his Kalender see only
his Calendar, which of course, is empty.

How do I fix it? Can he safely copy the old data into the English folders
and then delete the German ones? Thankfully the user does not care which
language the folders display.

Both Exchange servers are Exchange 2000 (German)
Client is Outlook 2000 (German) with Windows 98 (German)

Opening other user's mailboxes

2002-09-23 Thread Allison M . Wittstock

Hallo,

I have (at least) 2 users that can open other user's Mailboxes.
In my frantic search for a solution, I came across a post on usenet which
states:

Check the permissions in the (M) drive that exchange creates. Goto the
mail box that you want to view, right click on the calendar, goto
security, then set the permissions. Hope this helps.

From reading this list, I know to ignore the M drive for doing backups. But in
this case can I change permissions as mentioned above? I don't see how to do
it in the Exchange Administrator console nor on the client.

Thanks,
AW

RE: Opening other user's mailboxes

2002-09-23 Thread Allison M . Wittstock

Hi,

If I look in the ACtive-directory Computers and Users console, I see that one
of the users (that can open other mailboxes) is a domain-user, and also members
of some distribution lists I setup.

But if I use explorer, I see that under M:\ - DOMAIN - MBX - UserName -
Inbox has the group everybody with full rights (!)

I am not sure how this happened but I'd like to know how to change it.

RE: Opening other user's mailboxes

2002-09-23 Thread Allison M . Wittstock

Oh, that was a random Usenet poster telling another random Usenet poster that
they should modify Mailbox permissions from the folders under the M:\ drive.
They needed calendar permissions changed, so I assumed (very wrongly) that it
could work also for the inbox permissions. However, because of this list, I am
afraid to even look at the M:\ icon in Explorer so I thought I'd ask.
By the way, no one responded to that random Usenet person telling them they are
wrong.

RE: Exmerge fails on import

2002-09-21 Thread Allison M . Wittstock

Yes I did.

I have gotten it to work. I was thinking it could have been permission issues,
so I checked the properties of the PST. The group Everybody had full
permissons, but just for laughs I added the Administrators and gave them full
permissions. Then it worked. I've logged into the mailbox with Outlook,
everything seems to be there and the log file checks out OK.

I seem to remember for exch55 that installing any version of OL on the exch
server = BAD...unless if you really had too... you installed OL first then
 installed exch..

It was something about OL over writting the mapi32.dll? of the exch server
with the OL version or something like that.

 Outlook Express...

OK Now I am thinking I might need Outlook 2000? Wasn't there a thread in
 this
list a week or so ago which discussed not installing Outlook onto the
 Exchange
server itself? Or am I dreaming things?

So if I install OL 2000 you reckon it will work?

 Hi,

No -- Just one 2000 server to another. Both are Windows 2000
servers, however the server I exported from is at SP2, and
the new server which the imports are failing is at SP3.

  Hello,

I am using Exmerge for the first time with Exchange 2000.

RE: Backup Exec 8.6 - Open File Option

2002-08-22 Thread Allison M . Wittstock

1.) From the FAQ I only see:

4.4 Q: ...OpenFile Agent...?
A: Open File Agent = BAD.

with no explanation... However, I tend to believe the Exchange community over
what a salesperson tells me. He was going on and on and on about how much I
need this option without really saying why.

OFO = Open File Option, OOF = Out Of OFfice? Huh? Did I mention anything about
it? Or just all permutations of O's and F's = BAD?

 Hello,

I am thinking about purchasing Backup Exec to backup Exchange 2000, and the
sales rep asked me if I want the Open File Option.
Since I will be making online backups of the server at night when no one is
 ever
logged on, do I really need to pay the extra 441 Euro for this option?

I am also assuming that I can add it on later? But I am not sure if I need it,
especially after reading Lori Hunter's response.
