Re: Unix/Linux Client for Exchange
Hi, You can use Ximian Evolution http://www.ximian.com/products/evolution/ with their Exchange Connector http://www.ximian.com/products/connector/ for Exchange 2000 or 20003. The client is free, but the Connector will cost you. I think it costs around $25US per client. I use Evolution on my linux desktop, and it has a very Outlook-y feel. Re: Lost Emails after making new user
Hi Ed, I did search for *.ost and *.pst, and then *.*st and then *st* but I found nothing Outlook related. And I did search with show me hidden files. Then I went into his C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\* and manually checked the folders for anything, just in case it was called something different. There weren't any files that looked like they could contain his 30MB or so of mails/contacts/etc. What happened was this, and I have no idea how it was working: After the mailbox was deleted, the user noticed some kind of error message in Outlook (of course he doesn't remember as this was in December), and choose to work in offline mode. My boss (who deleted the mailbox) nor the user removed the Exchange services from his service list in Outlook. He was working in offline mode, had no *ST files, and had no AD User account/Exchange Mailbox. Instead of entering user/domain/password in his Outlook, I hit cancel, and the emails were there. I jsut exported all the data, and then entered Outlook with his user/domain/password to import the data. Low on disk space
Hi, My server's tape drive broke, and I had to order a new one. In the meantime, the Log files in \MDBDATA have grown to almost fill up the disk. I am using Ed Crowley's Never Restore Method, so I wasn't too worried about users losing emails. Now that I have the tape drive that I can re-install, the harddisk is almost full and has only 200MB free. I have a question: Can I safely reboot the machine without any problems? Or will it complain about not enough disk space? As a temp backup, should I take the Stores offline and copy the whole MDBDATA directory to another server? I plan to do a full backup once the tape drive is installed, and hopefully it will flush the log files. I'm just worried that maybe the server will not start... Thanks, Allison P.S. Error when attempted to reconnect a Mailbox.
Hi, I'm having a problem with 1 user account. I deleted it, then re-created it (in the AD User and Computer manager). Now, in the Mailbox Manager, I see the user's mailbox listed, but with a red X on it. If I choose to reconnect it, I receive the exact error shown in http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303311 (Q303311) However, there is no existing contact that has the same Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) address as a mail-enabled contact that already exists in Active Directory. I did _have_ a contact with a _similar_ user name (meaning their first and last names), but the SMTP addresses were completely different. I deleted this contact anyway, to see if I could re-connect the other mailbox. I still receive this error message and cannot reconnect the mailbox. What can I do now? I would somehow like the mails in the mailbox and restore this user. Re: Moving E2k storage group to new Server
SuSE's OpenExchange server product sounds like a close replacement for a Windows e-mail/collabaration server: http://www.suse.com/us/business/products/suse_business/openexchange/index.html On Wednesday 06 November 2002 16:08, you wrote: Here's my take: A quick peek a CDW shows SBS at $1277 http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.asp?EDC=274287. Microsoft is offering a $500 rebate if you can read the SBS sales literature and answer 20 some-odd questions. That puts the price at $777. I'm not familiar with the MCSP program, so I cannot comment on that. You are also forgetting about Exchange CALS at $70 each. You are correct in that growing past SBS is somewhat painful (I might argue with the 10-20 times more expensive. Exmerging 50 mailboxes is not that painful...), but I would maintain that if a company finds themselves outgrowing SBS, then it should not have been put in in the first place. Yes, Linux is a viable option for small companies (big ones, too). It does have some drawbacks, though. 1. Support. Finding a local consultant to support a Linux system is going to be harder than finding someone to support Microsoft products. 2. Third-party applications. Going Linux defiantly puts a company outside the mainstream and limits third party server applications like mail filtering, antivirus, web surfing control, etc. Running a business on Linux servers is, IMHO, very a very viable option. But, it pretty much requires a resident propeller-head to smooth over the rough spots. Most small companies (where SBS is targeted) just can't afford a full-time system admin. They would much rather farm it out to a consultant. Let's not forget that Exchange is more than email as well. There's nothing in the open source arena (that I know of) that can provide the same functionality that Exchange provides. I'll conclude stating that IMHO, SBS is an excellent value when applied in the appropriate environment - that is a small company (5-15 employees) needing at least file-sharing and Exchange and with no resident system admin. -Original Message- From: Greg Deckler [mailto:greg;infonition.com] Sent: Tuesday, November 05, 2002 6:55 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Moving E2k storage group to new Server Thought long and hard about letting this go, but where is the fun in that? First, to answer the migration piece of this. The only option I can think of at this time would be to treat the SBS Exchange system as a foreign mail system, meaning export and import mailbox data to migrate. Migration costs will be 10-20 times what it would be to simply put another server in place and move users. But, if is your only option... Now on to the fun... SBS License: $1,499.00 (5 clients) Real W2K Server license: $1,199.00 (10 clients) E2K Standard Edition: $1,299.00 (can always be upgraded to Enterprise if needed) Now, realistically, if you are a small little shop, this is all the Microsoft products that you need and so for 1.67 times the amount you eliminate all of the limitations of SBS and have actual, real products versus cripple-ware. But what about ISA? Don't need it. Go get a Linksys box for $100 for your firewall and it is wide open outbound. But what about SQL Server? IF you need it, then it's $1,499.00. Otherwise, you don't need it. If you are a small business, you can get cripple-ware for $1.5K or actual software to run your business for $2-4K. Under the first scenario you are setting yourself up for failure and under the second, you have invested just a little more money but have primed your business for growth. And if you are such a cash-strapped business that you cannot afford the extra grand or two, then you should probably be looking at free software. Put a Linux box up, done. It's cost $0.00. And, just for fun, 2 MCP exams, ~$250 and an MCSP license ~$2000.00. So again, for just a few extra (hundreds) of dollars you get lots and lots and lots of actual software versus cripple-ware. So where is the business case for SBS? There isn't one. It is for closed-minded, all I know is Microsoft, lazy people that do not think far enough ahead to keep them from running into closed doors. Installing SBS is setting yourself up for failure, period. I have seen it time and time again. It is Microsoft cripple-ware, plain and simple. You get what you pay for and you get what you deserve when you don't plan ahead. I am more than willing to admit I am wrong, so show me a business case where SBS is the RIGHT solution. And by that, I do not mean the lowest cost solution, because Linux has that one well in hand. I mean, when all the pros and cons are analyzed, that SBS is the winner. I honestly have never encountered it. You know what they say: opinions are like, well never mind... Personally, I think SBS is a fantastic product, provided you keep it's limitations in mind up front. Yes, it would be a pain to upgrade, but

Any ideas are appreciated. -Mike http://www.uselessthoughts.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:leave-exchange;ls.swynk.com Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED] -- The information contained in this email message is privileged and confidential information intended only for the use of the individual or entity to whom it is addressed. Re: ADC vs. Exmerge
Hi, When I moved to a new 2000 server, I exported the Public Folders to PST's and all of the permission/ownership setting were lost. But I don't know if that is normal, or if I did something wrong. AW On Wed, 25 Sep 2002, you wrote: Hi, We have about a 850 mailboxes and a 10 GB Info Store that is Exchange 5.5 SP4. We have seperate OWA 5.5 and IMS servers. We also run Antigen 6.5. We are planning on moving to Exchange 2000. We have a new server that we are going to migrate to. I have read the faqs and many white papers about migrating. From what I've read, the ADC is the recommended way to go to get your mailboxes, public folders, and settings moved over. However, one of our staff has brought up the argument that, in order to have a clean Exchange 2000 server, it is best to not use the ADC. He says that we should exmerge all our mailboxes, export our public folders to pst's, reset up our settings, and exmerge/import everything into the new server. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Should I just tell him to shut his pie hole? Thanks, Aaron This message and any attachments have been scanned for viruses during transmission from Washington Trust Bank. Doubles of all Outlookfolders
Hello, So I used Exmerge exported all of my user's data and re-imported them on the new server. Worked fine. Except... I went to my users' PCs and opened their Outlooks (v2000) and tested that everything was OK (I only have 8 users so this wasn't a big deal, and I needed to set a registery key on their machines anyway). There was however 1 laptop user who had his machine at home, so I couldn't login to his machine and test his mailbox. So, I opened it on a workstation (running Office 2000 English version), saw everything was OK, and logged out. I didn't notice double objects, though. This morning he says he has doubles of all of the Outlook folders: contacts, calendar, notes, etc. One has the English name and the other is the German name. All new emails are going in the Inbox (and not into the Posteingang were all of the old mails are), and users trying to read his Kalender see only his Calendar, which of course, is empty. How do I fix it? Can he safely copy the old data into the English folders and then delete the German ones? Thankfully the user does not care which language the folders display. Opening other user's mailboxes
Hallo, I have (at least) 2 users that can open other user's Mailboxes. In my frantic search for a solution, I came across a post on usenet which states: Check the permissions in the (M) drive that exchange creates. Goto the mail box that you want to view, right click on the calendar, goto security, then set the permissions. Hope this helps. From reading this list, I know to ignore the M drive for doing backups. But in this case can I change permissions as mentioned above? I don't see how to do it in the Exchange Administrator console nor on the client. RE: Opening other user's mailboxes
Oh, that was a random Usenet poster telling another random Usenet poster that they should modify Mailbox permissions from the folders under the M:\ drive. They needed calendar permissions changed, so I assumed (very wrongly) that it could work also for the inbox permissions. However, because of this list, I am afraid to even look at the M:\ icon in Explorer so I thought I'd ask. By the way, no one responded to that random Usenet person telling them they are wrong. RE: Exmerge fails on import
Yes I did. I have gotten it to work. I was thinking it could have been permission issues, so I checked the properties of the PST. The group Everybody had full permissons, but just for laughs I added the Administrators and gave them full permissions. Then it worked. I've logged into the mailbox with Outlook, everything seems to be there and the log file checks out OK. Outlook Express... OK Now I am thinking I might need Outlook 2000? Wasn't there a thread in this list a week or so ago which discussed not installing Outlook onto the Exchange server itself? Or am I dreaming things? So if I install OL 2000 you reckon it will work? 1.) From the FAQ I only see: 4.4 Q: ...OpenFile Agent...? A: Open File Agent = BAD. with no explanation... However, I tend to believe the Exchange community over what a salesperson tells me.
