Installing an internet mail connector

2002-11-07 Thread Ed Esgro
This is new to me so I was hoping for a few suggestions and some help.

I have Exchange 5.5 in my organization.

I currently have an internet mail connector. However the server is having
problems and I am building a new one.

My question is.

How do I install the internet mail connector? I do not see it as part of the
installation options.

By having two internet mail connectors in the same site... will it cause any
problems or can they co-exist until I can remove the original one?

Any information would help.

Thanks all.

Ed

Thank you Greg for the information.

I apologize if I offended you or anyone else with my apparent stupid

Subject: Re: Installing an internet mail connector

First of all, in E55, it is the Internet Mail Service. Second, man; not to
be rude, but do a little research. I mean, go into the E55 Administrator
program and hit the freakin' help menu. I pulled this DIRECTLY from Books
Online:

You can add an Internet Mail Service to a site that has an existing
service. Only one Internet Mail Service can be installed on a single
server.

You should consider adding another Internet Mail Service when:

Backlogs regularly build up in one of the Internet Mail Service queues.
A backup computer is required to eliminate any interruption of the mail
transfer between the Microsoft Exchange Server site and the other SMTP
hosts.
When your site has more than one Internet Mail Service, you should
consider the following:

If the amount of mail to specific domains on the SMTP messaging system can
be divided, consider configuring each of the Internet Mail Services to
process mail for specific domains only.
You can assign a cost to the address spaces of each Internet Mail Service.
This partially determines Internet Mail Service throughput and can be used
to optimize Internet Mail Service performance.
If incoming and outgoing mail to the SMTP messaging system is balanced,
consider configuring one Internet Mail Service to process incoming
messages and the other Internet Mail Service to process outgoing messages.
When you add a new Internet Mail Service, you may need to perform one or
more of the following tasks:

Modify the address space of existing Internet Mail Services depending upon
the address space you assign to the new Internet Mail Service.
Change the maximum number of inbound and outbound connections of existing
Internet Mail Services depending upon the number of inbound and outbound
connections you want to assign to the new Internet Mail Service.
Change the DNS or Hosts file to reflect the existence of the new Internet
Mail Service host.
Change the MX records in DNS to forward mail to a new Internet Mail
Service host if the primary Internet Mail Service is down or too busy.

Here is a brief step-by-step:
1. Start Exchange Server Administrator program.
2. On the File menu, click New Other, and then click Internet Mail
Service.
3. Finish the wizard with all the necessary information.

This is new to me so I was hoping for a few suggestions and some help.

Exchange Internet Mail Connector and Relaying

2002-10-31 Thread Ed Esgro
Hello group.

I am using Exchange 5.5 server with service pack 4.
This server has the SMTP interface installed and it being used to route SMTP
mail.
For the life of me I can not figure out why this server is allowing SMTP
mail to relay.

I have the option Do not reroute incoming SMTP mail checked.
I have restarted the IMS a few times.
But when I telnet and send an email to a hotmail address, I do not get an
error stating relaying is denied. It sends the message through.

Is there anything that I am missing that is allowing mail to relay?

Is your IP address that you're telnetting from in the Hosts and Clients
with these IP addresses... dialog? In that case, relaying will be
allowed.

You should get a 550 right there.
Choose the Reroute mail option instead and under Routing restrictions
Check the Hosts and Clients with these IP addresses option and do not put
any entries in there. restart the IMS.

I don't' think we have the full picture here. If this is a bug, you are the
_only_ person in the entire world to have ever experienced it. Thus it is
something unique to your environment or configuration.

What do you have for routing restrictions? I know you said the enable relay
button is selected no, check it again.

Hello group.

I am using Exchange 5.5 server with service pack 4.
This server has the SMTP interface installed and it being used to route SMTP
mail. For the life of me I can not figure out why this server is allowing
SMTP mail to relay.

I have the option Do not reroute incoming SMTP mail checked. I have

hotmail address, I do not get an error stating relaying is denied. It sends
the message through.

Is there anything that I am missing that is allowing mail to relay?

RE: Exchange Internet Mail Connector and Relaying

2002-10-31 Thread Ed Esgro
I have stainsafe.com route to inbound.
Same problem.

I think I am going to have to rebuild this IMS. Because it is not doing
anything it is designed to do.
My current work around now is I am forwarding all messages to a host that
doesn't allow relaying.
This is not my ideal solution, but it is working for now.
I wanted to prohibit the relay right from the source instead of adding a hop
to the message and causing unnecessary smtp traffic.

RE: Why would an email?

2002-06-18 Thread Ed Esgro

MX record pointing to your mail server possibly. I had this exact problem
only I was trying to send to an organization. Some mail would go through,
some mail would fail. Turned out my ISP DNS servers had two MX records for
the recipient and one of them was wrong. It only happened on this one
particular domain. It is possible the organization in question for you has a
problem on their DNS finding your correct MX server. After doing some
recursive queries it is finally finding your MX server. Just a thought.

Subject: Why would an email?

Good afternoon,

Outlook 98 Exchange 5.5 sp4

I have a user that claims they are not receiving eMAILs from one person
outside the organization. I emailed that
outside person and asked for a reply. I cc: my Yahoo account so I could see
if I was having networking problems.
I have checked this person's mailbox and there is no messages from this
outside person.

The outside person received my eMAIL and replied to all. My Yahoo account
got the reply just like that but my
Outlook account finally got the message after 4 1/2 hours... WOW. What is
up with that? I have checked
my queues and nothing is backed up. I can send eMAIL to my Yahoo account
from my Outlook account and vice versa
and the messages are received on a timely bases. I have checked my logs and
see nothing strange.

Has anyone had a similar problem? Please help me out.

Subject: Relay SMTP

Hello,

I have an Exchange 5.5 SP4 server. The server is primarily the connector
server in my site. It has no mailboxes on it. I have the server setup to not
relay smtp message. The option DO NOT REROUTE INCOMING SMTP MAIL is
selected. However it is still allowing SMTP relay messages. I have
re-installed the service pack, restarted the server and it still allows
relay. Is there something I am missing? Any info would be appreciated.

Thank you

Ed

If you have your IMC set to not allow any relaying, it doesn't give you the

is he needs to change the relay settings in IMS to allow relaying.

Ed, be careful not to make yourself an open relay if this host is
communicating directly to the Internet.

I am using Exchange Server 5.5
I am using an application that establishes an SMTP connection to my SMTP
server and sends an SMTP message to the outside world. The problem is
the
message will not be delivered. It appears that the SMTP server will not
see
the recipient in its local site and then bounce the message back
undeliverable. Of course the recipient isn't in the local site because
it is
an outside email address.

Example of what I am doing.

Telnet mail.stainsafe.com 25

Mail from:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Subject: test message

This comes back undeliverable almost immediately. It appears to me that
the
SMTP server is not trying to send the message out, it is looking for the
recipient locally and then rejecting it because the recipient doesn't
exist.
How can I have the SMTP server send the message to the MX server of
notmydomain.com? If I am confusing you all I apologize. Thanks for the
help.

RE: SMTP message

2002-05-30 Thread Ed Esgro

I am not sure. I just want this application to make a connection to my smtp
server and send a message to anyone in the world. Making the connection is
not the problem it is sending to the outside world that is the problem. I
can make a telnet connection and send a message to any internal recipient
with no problems. If I relay don't I have to specify domains to relay to? If
so then I would have to specify a lot of domains. :)

permissions for public folders

2002-04-24 Thread Ed Esgro

Scenario:

I am using Exchange 5.5
I have thousands of public folders.
I was just asked to change all of the public folder permissions as follows.
Default must be changed to none
Anonymous must be changed to none

Question:

Is there a way I can do this from a top level and have it automatically
filter down through the folders, or do I actually have to go to each and
every folder and change the permissions?

Thank you,

BCC any sent message

2002-03-25 Thread Ed Esgro

Hello all,

I know that a client side rule will achieve what I am trying to do, but I am
wondering if there is another way to accomplish it. Here it is.

A specific user sends email messages. I need all of the users sent messages
to be blind carbon copied to another person or DL.

I am using Outlook 2000 with Exchange 5.5 SP4

I know it sounds like a strange request, but this is their idea of email
monitoring. Even 3rd party ideas will work, but I would really like to do it
without 3rd party if at all possible. I am thinking it won't be. But I may
be wrong. Thanks everyone.

Hello all,

I know that a client side rule will achieve what I am trying to do, but
I am wondering if there is another way to accomplish it. Here it is.

A specific user sends email messages. I need all of the users sent
messages to be blind carbon copied to another person or DL.

I am using Outlook 2000 with Exchange 5.5 SP4

I know it sounds like a strange request, but this is their idea of email
monitoring. Even 3rd party ideas will work, but I would really like to
do it without 3rd party if at all possible. I am thinking it won't be.
But I may be wrong. Thanks everyone.

Ed

Change greeting from POP3 telnet session

2002-03-21 Thread Ed Esgro

Hello all,

I was wondering how to change the greeting message when a telnet session to
a POP3 server is successful. I am basically looking to change the name of
the DNS name. I want to give it some type of alias instead of the FQDN.
Thanks

Utility to save attachments

2002-02-08 Thread Ed Esgro

Hi all,

Does anyone know of an application that will remove all attachments for a
particular mailbox and save them to a defined location? Preferably something
that will not be client side dependent. It kind of has to be a service that
runs in the back ground. TIA

Okay, it's a lead I will check it out. Denyse, your suggestion was very
close. However it will only save the attachment to a public folder. It needs
to be removed from the exchange database to an actual file.

Thank you.

Exchange 5.5 rules

2002-02-06 Thread Ed Esgro

Does anybody know what the limitations are to the amount of rules one can
have for a mailbox. I have a user that gets an error message when creating a
rule. After disabling another rule, the new rule will work. It appears to me
that there is a limitation to the amount of rules one mailbox can have. Am I
correct? If so what is the limit? Thanks All.

RE: Exchange 5.5 rules

2002-02-06 Thread Ed Esgro

I see,
I am guessing that the rules on the server end are stored in the priv.edb.
On the client end do you know the name of the file that the client side
rules use?
Also are there any 3rd party utilities available that may enable him to add
more rules? Or can he somehow tell the server side rules to reside on the
client side instead of server side?

Thanks Martin.

Email Forwarder

2001-11-19 Thread Ed Esgro

I am not sure how to achieve this, so I was wondering if someone may point
me in the right direction.

I have a colleague that wishes to send out mail. His ISP however, is
restricting him from sending mail out. He wants to know if he can send mail
out from our email server, I guess sort of be a forwarder for him. Is this
at all possible? If it is how can I actually do that? Or do I have to create
an account for him and have him use pop3 settings etc.? Thank you all in
advance for you much appreciated knowledge and feed back.

BTW I have an exchange 5.5 sp4 server on NT 4.0 sp6a.

You got that right. I like your comments. I wish I knew the answers to your

achieve this. I am really not in a position to question him, unless I find
reason that this is a bad idea. I would like to provide him a solution as
well as pit falls to the solution.

If I read this right, he is asking you to allow him to send mail using your
server, while he is dialed up to his ISP. Did I get that right? Confirm or
correct me, and I and others can comment. If I am correct, he is asking you
to allow him to relay. BAD Idea. What kind of ISP restricts individuals
from sending mail out? Has he done something to earn that restriction?

For the record, I would agree this is a bad idea, but...

You could allow him to use you as a relay as long as he has authenticated.
Give him a mailbox, username, and password, configuring each appropriately.
Make sure he uses a client that allows SMTP authentication (Outlook, Outlook
Express, ?) and hope he doesn't decide to use your server for sending his
Spam.
