E-mail addresses must be unique between users!

You need to add the second manager as a different e-mail address, then
have exchange deliver the mail to BOTH mailboxes. (alternate recipient)

I don't know if it's related, but I remember some issue with Exchange

Not enough information to help you.

Exchange 5.0 is way outdated.

Do you have the Internet Mail Protocol/Connector installed? Is it
working? Is there an MX record pointing to the server's IP address?

What exactly is the problem. Just telling us that there is no mail in
the user's inboxes does not help at all.

Users are using POP3 to pull mail?

Set yourself up an address. Send mail to it from another service like
hotmail. Check the mailbox with POP3 or whatever the users are using.
This should also notify you at the hotmail address if mail is bouncing
and to some degree why.

You need the internet mail service in order to receive SMTP mail from
the outside world. As a by product, it provides POP3 access also. You
don't have to use POP3 is you are using an exchange aware client like
outlook.

Generally, You set up each user with their own mailbox. The user can
then check their mail using whatever means (outlook w/exchange or POP3)

I think you may need to do some reading up on Exchange. Version 5.0 is
similar in most ways to version 5.5.

I still maintain one of my clients Exchange 5.0 system. It works pretty
well once you get it working if you just leave it alone.

Please be aware that there is no direct way to stop Exchange 5.0 from
being an open relay (that I am aware of.) It's missing some of the
routing features that 5.5 has. Spammers will love you and the world
will hate you. The best option is to set up a more secure SMTP relay to
relay the mail to Exchange 5.0.

OST files are specific to a particular MAPI profile. If a user logs on
to another machine, the OST gets created for that user (if Offlife
folders is enabled.) If roaming profiles are enabled, the user will get
an OST file at every machine he/she logs in to. *Normally* the OST
files are not part of the roaming profile.

The mail SHOULD NOT be removed from the server, only mirrored to the
OST.

Installing Instant Messaging

I am trying to install the instant messaging server portion of Exchange

machine is running Windows 2000 SP3.

My plan was to add the Instant Messaging component from my Exchange 2000

I am getting an error (which I didn't write down) that I think is
related to schema attributes.

I don't know what the deal is with this latest version of BugBear, but
it's really a problem.

I started having issues with it on the 4th.

The remote access and key logger are the scary parts of this worm.

I have had it get past two A/V scanners. One on mail and one on
workstations. I have double extensions blocked and all the usual
extensions too.

I recommend everyone be on alert for this one:

RE: The real story with Secondary MX

2003-05-30 Thread Public Folder: Exchange

Generally you use a SMTP relay on another system as a secondary. This
usually is just a relay that accepts ALL mail for a particular domain.
It usually has no knowledge of user accounts.

Normally, mail is attempted to be delivered to the primary MX, if it's
not available, the next lower priority one is tried and so on down the
list.

If the secondary receives mail, it tries at specified intervals to relay
the mail to the server/ip that it is set up to send that mail to
(usually the primary MX) or it can use DNS.

It doesn't.

You can simply use the Windows 2000 SMTP service for this task. Just be
sure to set it up correctly so it only accepts mail for the required
domain(s) and isn't an open relay.

RE: Routing restrictions Exchange 5.5

2002-11-22 Thread Public Folder: Exchange

Doesn't your internal network accept internet mail in some way? How do
people address mail to your company?

1. Many ISPs allow SMTP AUTH'ed mail from outside, you could have your
monitor machines send mail to your ISP's SMTP AUTH server.

2. You could set up your own SMTP relay that only relays to your
Exchange server AND only if AUTH is valid and then allow exchange to
accept mail from this relay.

Holding SHIFT down allows multiple items on the desktop to be selected.
When you double-click it will launch ALL the selected items.

Keep in mind that Microsoft Small Business Server runs a whole slew of
network services on the same machine, including Exchange.

I have several small (5-25 user) businesses set up with Exchange on a
Domain Controller running DNS, DHCP, etc. without any problems.

RE: Backup hardware

> What are you using for hardware? I have 2 dedicated servers

For my own personal network, I have a scheduled task that backups (using
NTBACKUP) up my Exchange/DC/file server to a file on spare drive on
another machine. I have a spare drive just for this purpose (they are
sooo cheap now.)

I bought a cheap 20GB firewire hard drive and copy the backup files to
it daily (or almost anyway) This is my off-site backup.

May not be elegant, but it works for me.

Drop Arcserve as it does not work correctly anyway.

If you ever have to restore a server and an ArcServe backup is all you
have, then you have NOTHING. You are pooched.

USE NTBACKUP! (The backup program included with Windows)

This sounds like it's right on the ball. If there is SPAM in your
outbound queues, then you are being used as a SPAM relay, which is
something you should REALLY avoid at all costs.

I find it much easier to NOT use MAPI when sending mail with VB. You
can do it directly using the Winsock control or you can buy a SMTP
ActiveX control. You could also use a program like BLAT in conjunction
with the shellexecute command.

Don't buy a SSL Cert. Just windows 2000 cert services to create your

use for exchange. Change outlook/exchange services properties to ask for a user/pass

RE: messages frozen in an SMTP queue

Perhaps are you allowing 8-bit MIME or some such strange format that the
Linux machine does not accept.

Have you looked at your Exchange/SMTP logs?

There should be an error message of some sort.

This is O.T.

Personally, I think "tablet" PCs are going to eventually replace
Laptops.

What I really want is a wireless monitor (like the one that viewsonic
sells.) I think these are going to be the best thing since sliced bread.
Image a 10 or 12 inch screen that you can carry around with you that
runs Windows CE, acts like a PDA, but ALSO has an RDP client so you can
connect to your desktop or terminal server. I gotta have one!

This is by design. Outlook has faxing ability in "Internet Mail Only"
mode, so MS included the fax number in the contact list (address book)
The second item listed in your address book is the fax entry.

I have never seen a way to disable this, but it sure would be nice.

RE: E2K WEIRD GATEWAY ADDRESS

2003-02-12 Thread Public Folder: Exchange
Having multiple gateways always causes problems in my experience. What
is the reason for having the multiple gateways? Are they both in the
same subnet?

You are much better off avoiding a multiple gateway configuration if you
can.

RE: Strange 550 error

2003-02-12 Thread Public Folder: Exchange

I have seen misleading 550 errors if Reverse DNS to your domain is not
correct. If the IP address of your SMTP relay/server resolves to
mail.domain.com, but the SMTP server/relay actually claims to be a
different host name, then you can get a 550 error.

Do a full backup using NTBACKUP to flush the log files.

Imagine your antivirus program quarantining (by moving the file) your
message store file or cleaning it by removing a piece out of the middle
of it. Either way, you'd be screwed.

Never scan the Exchange directories. At the very least use a SMTP
scanner for inbound mail and a file system scanner on your workstations
to catch users who may introduce a virus. You could also use an
Exchange based virus scanner.

Have you tried a manual telnet session to that domain's mail server to
see what the actual error is?

MSN has implemented anti-SPAM measures.. You might be black-listed
somewhere.

If that domain's mail server is doing reverse DNS look ups and your host
names don't match, you won't be able to send mail to them until you fix
it.

Black-hole mailbox

2003-03-11 Thread Public Folder: Exchange

In Exchange 5.5 it was easy to create a mailbox that was simply a
black-hole. This was done by selecting to forward the mail for that
mailbox to an alternate address, but leaving the address field blank.

Is this possible in Exchange 2k? If I select the forwarding address
option and don't select an address (contact) then it reverts the
setting.

Anyone know a way to create a black-hole for mail with Exch2K?

Thanks,
