ntbackup backup c: d: e: ds \\server is \\server /v /r /b /e /l

/a
Causes backup sets to be added or appended after the last backup set on the

Holy Haiku, Batman! Excellent job! And very nice footnote, too!

In your batch file, try separating out each of the drive letters on their
own line and using the /a switch to append to the same tape.

RE: NTBackup

2001-10-26 Thread Seitz, Peter

Our bat file reads: "ntbackup backup z:\exchsrvr\tracking.log DS \\curly IS
\\curly /b /hc:on /t Normal /l C:\winnt\backup.log
ntbackup eject

z:\exchsrvr is because we are a clustered enviroment, hence Larry, Moe,
Curly, Curly being the virtual node, Larry and Moe are the actual nodes.
Our only problem has been lately is that our store has exceeded tape
capacity, and we have to click on "OK" the next morning to finish up the
backup on the next tape.

sorry, no haiku.

NTbackup hardware compression ?

2003-01-17 Thread Jim Helfer

I was wondering if hardware compression is generally effective when doing
an Exchange-aware NTbackup backup, or if the databases are already
compressed?

I have a 12GB capacity DDS3 tape drive that I use to do on-line backups of
my Exchange server. I have made sure that I am either using the command line
switch /hc:on, or checking "hardware compression" in the NTbackup screeen.

However, since my Priv.Edb creeped up to >12 Gig, the backup spans two
tapes.

Could there be something I'm doing incorrectly, or is it time to get a
bigger tape drive, or an Exchange backup program that understands tape
loaders, or just deal with the additional pain of tape flipping?

 Thanks for any info

Here is an old email response to a simular request that Ken Cornetet
supplied some time ago. I guess you could change it to your needs. Enjoy!

Use the GUI to create the backup selection file "everything.bks".
Obviously, you want this file to include your Exchange information stores.

Change the "BNCHMARK DLT1 SCSI Sequential Device" to whatever the name of

This batch file needs grep, recode, and blat. Use your favorite search

   PDC
  Konstanz
   PDC
  Mailand
   PDC
In every side we have one PDC but he lists not the hole
domain name. Haan is the first entry and ntbackup save this
exchange database.
I expect the problem is the backup.bks script. When i
choose the backup sources in ntbackup the bks script shows
below.

c:\
d:\
DS \\PDC
IS \\PDC

The name of the exchange server is only PDC.
When i change the name to a full domain name ntbackup stops
with a Dr. Watson.
For this problem I have nothing found in the technet.

Has everyone a good idea to solve this problem?

thanks

Bernd

RE: NTbackup hardware compression ?

I used to back up a 17GB+ Priv on a DDS3 tape drive without spanning tapes.
Something must be wrong with either the tape HW or the driver you are using.

Subject: NTbackup hardware compression ?

RE: NTbackup hardware compression ?

2003-01-17 Thread Jim Helfer

Thanks, I'll check my drivers & hardware. I'm using either a Sony
SDT-9000, or an HP Surestore, so I'm fairly confident that at least the
Surestore should be able to do hardware compression.

This was the problem. The Hpdat driver did not load properly, and the

ntbackup, E2K and logs

2002-04-02 Thread Edgington, Jeffrey

Under NT with Exchange installed, the '/l "C:\logname.log" would
redirect the log file for that particular backup to "C:\logname.log" ...
under Win2K Adv Server with E2K, when I attempt to give /l a location
for the logfile, it fails on that part of the command... upon looking at
the ntbackup commandline info, I don't see a reference to how to
redirect the log... anyone have some insight into this?

Thanks.

W2K3 and E2K3 and NTBackup

2003-08-08 Thread Walden H. Leverich III
I'm starting to plan for my 5.5/W2K to E2K3/W2K3 migration. We currently use
NTBackup to backup 5.5 on W2K, and it's great. My assumption is that W2K3's
NTBackup will backup E2K3, but I don't want to assume and I'm not to the
testing stage yet. It that a safe assumption?

Will W2K3's NTBackup backup E2K3?

Some people may have other reasons but for me I think
%userprofile%\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\ is a
stupid
place for a backup log file which is more of a "system type" item like
smtp
virtual server logs, IIS access logs etc and is not at all a
"userprofile
type" item such as desktop wallpaper. I managed to direct smtp logs,
IIS
logs etc all to the same folder so I can quickly access them and thanks
to
Tom's answer I can now put the backup logs in the same place.

It just seems that on a Server Product like Win2k Server, backup should
be a

We use BLAT to email the logs, like Tom. Since they get emailed, it doesn't
matter to me that the original is buried in some account's profile path.
But, I do understand the convenience of having all of your log files in a

Backup Ex5.5 using NTBackup on Workstation

2003-03-14 Thread Chris Quinn
After many problems with BackupExec I have decided to follow Paul
Robichaux's advice and try using NT Backup

I have written a batch file to be run on an NT4 workstation with DAT drive,
and Exchange Admin loaded to bake NTBackup Exchange aware. If I run this
batch file directly, it works fine, but I am trying to get it to run via the
AT scheduler. I have now found that it will not run as the scheduler
creates a null session without access to the network.
Q124184 suggests changing the account that the Scheduler uses, but on the
workstation this option is greyed out.

Can anyone give me any pointers on getting this working, or will I have to
run it on the server?

The batch file is as follows:

Ntbackup backup DS \\BPA IS \\BPA /hc:on /t normal /v /d "Blue Planet
Backup" /l c:\backup\daily.log /e

I'm starting to plan for my 5.5/W2K to E2K3/W2K3 migration. We currently use
NTBackup to backup 5.5 on W2K, and it's great. My assumption is that W2K3's
NTBackup will backup E2K3, but I don't want to assume and I'm not to the
testing stage yet. It that a safe assumption?

Will W2K3's NTBackup backup E2K3?

NTBackup of Exchange * Need Restore Options *

2003-09-03 Thread Michael Henry
Back in the early days of the Exchange server ( NT4.0, now with SP6 )setup,
We run NTBackup against the Exchange (5.5) server. It was free and after a
case of needing to use the backup, we realize we had to get different
software.

Well, for legal reasons, I'm stuck going through a bunch of these tapes
looking for evidence.

Is there a way to Restore the data/files on the tapes without restoring it
back to the Exchange server itself first?

TIA

RE: Backup Ex5.5 using NTBackup on Workstation

2003-03-14 Thread Ken Cornetet
Try adding this to your start of your backup batch file:

Net use \\BPA\ipc$ /user:administrator PasswordForAdministrator

Oh, and you may want to use blat.exe to email results to you.

NTBackup Account and Exchange 2k Rights/Permissions

2003-07-24 Thread Erik L. Vesneski
Hi,

I have created a NTBackup account for the NTBackup application.

When using this account for NTBackup on Windows 2k/Exchange 2k what
groups or rights does the account need to have or be apart of?

My automated NTBackups for the stores are not occuring and I believe
this is the underlying issue.

Ntbackup with Win2K3 and Exchange 2K3 (RC1)

2003-09-25 Thread Finch Brett
I am a little too use to Veritas and Ex 5.5 so I am new to the 'STM' file
and the backup procedures of Exchange2K3 (same as 2000 it appears). I am
trying to backup using NTBackup to a disk, all the rest of the backup
completes but I can not get the Exchange portion to backup correctly. It
appears from the log, I get the volumes and (based on size) what appears to
be the Public folders but I can't seem to get the Private store to backup.
At the very bottom (pasted below) is where it fails. I've searched for the
error in the 'Q' articles, I don't seem to find anything (looking in
Exchange2000 kB's). Maybe it's just a RC bug...

Ntbackup vs. Veritas for Exch 5.5 D/R ??

2003-01-10 Thread Alverson, Tom
Our old exchange box is running NT4 and exchange 5.5 with veritas backup
exec 7.3 (and the exchange addon). I have just set up a new server with
win2k server and exchange 5.5 and I am considering just using ntbackup for
D/R (disaster recovery).

I understand the adavantages of the Veritas backup database for file backup
and recovery, but in the case of recovering an exchange server I'm not sure
what extra I am getting from veritas. One thing that ntbackup will do that
I have not been able to do with Veritas is backup to a file. With Ntbackup,
I can do a full backup to another hard drive and then another second
complete backup to a tape every night. I can still have the tapes offsite
etc, but now also have a much faster restore off of another hard drive.

RE: Ntbackup with Win2K3 and Exchange 2K3 (RC1)

2003-09-25 Thread Fyodorov, Andrey
Is your file-level backup locking up some Exchange DB files?

I am a little too use to Veritas and Ex 5.5 so I am new to the 'STM'
file and the backup procedures of Exchange2K3 (same as 2000 it appears).
I am trying to backup using NTBackup to a disk, all the rest of the
backup completes but I can not get the Exchange portion to backup
correctly. It appears from the log, I get the volumes and (based on
size) what appears to be the Public folders but I can't seem to get the
Private store to backup. At the very bottom (pasted below) is where it
fails. I've searched for the error in the 'Q' articles, I don't seem to
find anything (looking in Exchange2000 kB's). Maybe it's just a RC

How to break Exchange in the Lab [Was: NTBackup]

2001-10-27 Thread Sanborn, John

Thanks to everyone and MSKB[1], I now have backups that I KNOW are good.

Next step now, is to learn how to fix Exchange. I know there are a few
million ways to break Exchange, but what would be the best for learning the
repair tools in a lab environment?

The hardware stuff 'should' be straight-forward. Break it - ID it - Repair/
Replace/ Restore - Reboot.
The software and DB corruption would need to be more careful to avoid
getting into a 'Restore is only option' situation.

Any Ideas?

Thanks
John

Iron Chef Haiku [1]
Subtle textures not seen here
And no steeenking rhymes

ntbackup rules
I should say in most cases
Small vexing problem

on just one server
all drives don't go on one tape
space not the issue

when each drive is done
wants new tape for the next drive
command line follows

ntbackup backup c: d: e: ds \\server is \\server /v /r /b /e /l
"d:\backup\backup.log" /hc:on /t normal

/v verify
/r restricts access
/b backs up local registry
/e log includes exceptions only
/l backup log filename
/hc:on Hardware compression on
/t normal (full) backup

not using the slash-a
backup acts like it is there
three drives specified

/a
Causes backup sets to be added or appended after the last backup set on the
tape. When /a is not specified, the program overwrites previous data. When
more than one drive is specified but /a is not, the program overwrites the
contents of the tape with the information from the first drive selected and
then appends the backup sets for the remaining drives.

Exchange alone works
Combination doesn't work
Drives alone bite too

NTSP6
Ex55Sp4
hotfixes as well

makes no difference
running comand line or bat
any help out there?

Thanks,
Paul

tape auto-stackers. If that is not a concer for you, I would go with

Our old exchange box is running NT4 and exchange 5.5 with veritas backup
exec 7.3 (and the exchange addon). I have just set up a new server with
win2k server and exchange 5.5 and I am considering just using ntbackup
for D/R (disaster recovery).

I understand the adavantages of the Veritas backup database for file
backup and recovery, but in the case of recovering an exchange server
I'm not sure what extra I am getting from veritas. One thing that
ntbackup will do that I have not been able to do with Veritas is backup
to a file. With Ntbackup, I can do a full backup to another hard drive
and then another second complete backup to a tape every night. I can
still have the tapes offsite etc, but now also have a much faster
restore off of another hard drive.

2003-01-10 Thread Walden H. Leverich III

Or, you could do as we do, a complete backup to a drive each night, and then
backup _that_ drive to tape. We've centralized a number of our server
backups to a machine we affectionately call "backup" and then we backup the
backup files to tape.

Granted it's a two step process to restore, first restore the .bak from the
tape to the machine and then the files from the .bak, but on the other hand
I can restore a machine w/o having to retrieve the backup tapes.

what extra I am getting from veritas.

Our old exchange box is running NT4 and exchange 5.5 with veritas backup
exec 7.3 (and the exchange addon). I have just set up a new server with
win2k server and exchange 5.5 and I am considering just using ntbackup for
D/R (disaster recovery).

Any Ideas?

Thanks

RE: How to break Exchange in the Lab [Was: NTBackup]

2001-10-29 Thread Mark Harford

Another good one is to let your IS and/or logfile space run out very rapidly
from a mail loop (use blat or the reskit simulation tools for the loop).
See if you really can get that server back up and running with some extra
disks within your SLA period & the mail loop cleared up before it goes down
again!

Recovering 5.5 pub.edb from online backup done with Windows 2000 ntbackup

2003-09-18 Thread Paul Hutchings
I'm hitting the MSKB as I speak, but I wondered if there's a quick 'n' dirty
answer to this.

Long story short I need to get pub.edb back from last nights backup,
someones outlook crashed doing a move of a load of contacts, the contacts
appear to have mysteriously lost all their category assignments.

I have a verified online backup from last night done using ntbackup, what I
would like to do is to do an offline restore (for lack of a better word) so
that I have the pub.edb file, I'll then look at building a box with Exchange
5.5 on it and recovering the .edb file to it.

It seems ntbackup will only let me restore the entire IS (50-odd gb vs 2gb
for just the public store), and only to the original location, I'm pretty
happy once I have the .edb file that I can bring it up on a recovery box.

I'll admit to having been caught somewhat one the hop here, I've read the
disaster whitepapers but they appear to assume you want to recover the lot,
onto the original box (which is the scenario I'd taken into account).

regards,
Paul

Re: Recovering 5.5 pub.edb from online backup done with Windows 2000 ntbackup

2003-09-18 Thread Paul Hutchings
Ed,

I have online backups done nightly using ntbackup on Windows 2000, the
online backup is done to a dedicated disk, the file on disk is then streamed
to tape later on when the "normal" filesever backups are done.

Problem I'm seeing is that when you load the online backup file into
ntbackup it simply recognizes "Directory" and "Information Store" objects,
you don't appear to be able to select which store you want to restore,
unless I'm misinterpreting something.

Paul

That should be doable as I have a spare drive large enough to put in the

doesn't give the option of restoring either/or database?
