RE: MS Exchange Server 5.5 Security Issue

2002-02-05 Thread Wayne Hanks

It is possible to check this on the Event Viewer for the Exchange server
under the security section as every access of a mailbox by other than the
owner is logged. You need to have the appropriate level of logging
configured (can't remember where this is configured). However if you want
alerting etc, I recommend looking at ELM? (Event Log Manager) from our
hosts at Sunbelt software:) It apparently does all this stuff.

On another note, This is where the careful vetting of people in these
positions of trust is essential. I'm not sure who said it but I remember
hearing it quoted here frequently that there are seldom good technical
solutions to social problems . It should be part of your terms of
employment for IT staff that they read and agree to your acceptable
behaviour policy (you do have one?) which would include the obvious stuff
about privacy, p0rn and web usage, etc. If they are caught breaching this
policy, it then becomes a HR problem.

Hi,

Our company is using MS Exchange Server 5.5.

I'm looking for an NT utilities that could help me to track any illegal

This is a very important issue for security. Just imagine, if an IT staff

So, could somebody provide me a solution of providing the tracking report

If you got the undeliverable mail in the administrator mailbox, then you've
already sent an NDR to the sender. If you're asking whether you can

(leave basically)

I have exchange currently configured to send the admin all bad mail. I guess
in hopes of catching the ugly stuff and getting rid of it. Well, I'm sick of
getting all of the crap.

Is there a way to have the server send a message back to the originator of
the message telling them He's gone on to a real job, don't write anymore!
this is where I break out into song... Return to sender

Outlook 98, Exchange 5.5. I have a user who has a rule setup to deliver
specific mail to a particular folder. The question is, can another rule be
setup to automatically forward any mail coming into this folder only, to be
forwarded to another user? This user says that somebody else had it setup,
but I can't find a rule like that anywhere. The only rules I see are ones
to deliver mail to a particular folder, not to automatically forward mail
onto another user. The alternate recipient thing won't work because then
ALL the users E-mail would be forwarded, not just mail from the specified
folder. Has anybody else done this?

Thanks.

The event logs tell you that. But you'll have to wade thru it, because
you'll have to know who really does have permission to view calendars and
such. And it sounds like the problem is more related to poor security or
employee mistrust.

I've tryed the Microsoft Knowledge base, but the solutions mentioned on

Since I was flamed badly once for asking a backup question, allow me to be
among the first in this thread to say:

Read the Disaster Recovery Whitepapers for both 5.5 and 2000 and all your
questions should be answered.

5 minutes of actually using NTBackup (if you don't have other backup
software) and a search of TechNet for Ntbackup will give you all the info
you need to run that program.

To that end, simply use NTBackup which is Exchange-aware and is part of
Win2k. Just run an IS backup, not the backup everything on this machine
option and your log files will not be an issue.

Dude, you are playing with fire when you manually delete log files. You need
to be using an EXCHANGE aware backup software. That will backup your
Exchange server, commit the log files, and then purge them correctly.

2002-02-05 Thread Joe L. Casale

I am using the latest version of lockdown. It says its got urlscan
integrated, and the correct settings...
Well, urlscan used to load an isapi filter that I no longer see, and as
for the correct settings, bogus as usual. I had to check the logs every
failure to tweak the settings... But it is all working better then it
used to! Didn't really break anything that wasn't easy to fix! I would
say its safe now... Just be prepared to have to change the settings in
the urlscan.ini file...

RE: MS Exchange Server 5.5 Security Issue

2002-02-05 Thread Gousset, Laurent

Check event logs for event ID 1016 which tells you if someone other than the
owner of the mailbox has accessed the mailbox.

You should also divide up your Exchange admins. One group has top level
access to the entire organization (service account admin). One group has
access to only servers in a site. And the final group is delegated only the
right to create mailboxes and DLs.

Hi,

Our company is using MS Exchange Server 5.5.

I'm looking for an NT utilities that could help me to track any illegal
users that logging into others people mailbox.

This is a very important issue for security. Just imagine, if an IT staff
that had the administration permission (service account) on MS Exchange
Server 5.5, he/she could view whoever mailbox, including the managing
director mailbox.

So, could somebody provide me a solution of providing the tracking report
for illegal users, that open others people mailbox? If he/she is NOT the

will be sending out.

Thanks.

We're thinking about using a MAPs database with MailEssentials 6.0 on Exhange 5.5 SP3 to try and stop all the damn spam. Is anyone else using this or something similar? My only hesitation is to the amount of legitimate mail that will get dropped as compared to the amount of spam blocked. Does the MAPs type of list get most of the spam - maybe 80%? Thanks for any input.

RE: MailEssential 6.0 and MAPS

2002-02-05 Thread Stu Sjouwerman
Title: MailEssential 6.0 and MAPS

Ryan,

I have
personal experience with MAPS. They slap normal
companies like ours on their list in an arbitrary fashion
and
the
real spammers go scott free. Not recommended!

  MailEssential 6.0 and MAPS
We're thinking about using a MAPs database with
MailEssentials 6.0 on Exhange 5.5 SP3 to try and stop all the damn spam.
Is anyone else using this or something similar? My only hesitation is to
the amount of legitimate mail that will get dropped as compared to the amount
of spam blocked. Does the MAPs type of list get most of the spam - maybe
  80%? Thanks for any input.

SSL for OWA?

2002-02-05 Thread Bonner, Jon

Does anyone have any advice for implementing SSL on an E2K OWA front-end
server? Any gotchas or pitfalls to be aware of? Recommendations on letting
the server handle the SSL overhead vs. getting a SSL PCI card or a
stand-alone SSL device?

Thanks!

It was a task assigned to a group I believe. I found a technet article and
it took care of the problem that I was having. Thanks anyway

complete the operation. One or more parameter values are not valid. If
anybody has an idea, I would appreicate it.

RE: Exch 5.5 - SP4 update error

2002-02-05 Thread Rodney Li

Stop any unnecessary services. I would stop services like antivirus
scanning, backup services, performance monitoring...even exchange
monitoring.
It should be a straightforward upgrade if you have stopped all those
services.
Rodney Li

The only monitoring I have is internally using the Exchange monitoring
 facility.could that be a problem ?

Do you have any external monitoring programs running? I seem to recall
issues caused by them during SP install.

I had problems with the installation when other services/ programs were
running. For example, stopping BackupExec seems to stop a lot of
installation problems. However, another problem I ran into was since my
servers are mostly single server shops, I run the OWA on the server. In =
 one
instance I had installed IIS and the OWA on the PDC, after installing a =
 BDC
and then a MS, I was able to move the OWA to it's own box. Ever since =
 that
occurred, whenever I try to manually patch the server, it wants IIS
 re-enbled.

 HTH - good luck.

BTW - I started using Update Expert and I don't have to deal with this =
 type
 of stuff anymore.=20

I am running ssl on my ex2k box. No problems NOW. If I were you I would download a 14
day trail certificate then let them upgrade it after 14 days. It was a pain to
configure the first time around.Don't spend the money until you know you have right.

Subject: OWA Access Problem

Hello Everyone,

Has anyone ever have this problem..

One of our OWA servers is acting up keeps spiting out this error whenever
someone tries to logon.

Failed to Connect to Microsoft Exchange Server, ServerName

I've tryed the Microsoft Knowledge base, but the solutions mentioned on
the 2 articles that I found weren't helpfull.

The server is part of a WLBS.

Any Help or clues would be great, I'm able to get the Logon Screen it's
just when I try to authenticate myself on the Network Dialog box it craps
out.
