RE: CALs required for "Contacts"?

2009-08-14 Thread Troy Meyer
Robert,

CALs are based on access according to:

http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/2007/howtobuy/default.mspx#EKC

with regards to distro groups and contacts, there is no server access
from a user or device, so you do not need to purchase a cal.

Does anyone know and can point me to documentation on whether Exchange
CALS are needed for email enabled contacts or distribution groups, since
there is only forwarding and no mailboxes on the Exchanger server.

My question: Active Directory allows you to setup "Contacts" that do
not have security rights like "user" objects. And these contacts can be
set to have a local domain e-mail address, but all mail is forwarded to
an outside mail system such as their Yahoo or Gmail account. There is no
mailbox storage on the Exchange server, thus the question on whether a
CAL is needed? I guess this question would also concern all AD
"Distribution" groups too, since it is doing the exact same thing.

Thank you and have a great weekend everyone,

Robert

Re: Microsoft Supporting VMWare Exchange Servers Work Around

2009-08-14 Thread Steven Peck
We still have premier support. However, we have many products that
are 'not supported' running in VMware. Generally when this comes up,
they say that, I point out best effort support, they go ok and we work
it out.

Now, we have one issue which has been identified as a vmware driver
issue but other then that they always try and resolve the issue.

As to 'getting out of' being discovered? Good luck with that. Any
troubleshooting dump will show you are running on vmware just with the
drivers alone.

Re: Mailbox retention

2009-08-14 Thread James Kerr
I think I know what "may" have happened. When I recreated the users account I
then created a mailbox, then I deleted said mailbox and maybe that over wrote
the one that was stored in disconnected mailboxes because it had the same name.
Could that be what happened?

their account and I would like to connect the old mailbox with his new account
but I cant find it and it isnt listed under disconnected mailboxes. Where might
it have gone?

Yes. On the same machine. Not required though. If you have another Exchange

Apparently it's the moving of mailboxes from one store to another
effectively repairs.

I've a question regarding storage of data in Exchange. I understand that
a message

sent to multiple recipients will have single instance storage per Data
Store.

"The idea behind single instance storage is that if a message is
addressed to

multiple recipients, and these recipients are located on the same
database, the

message is stored just once."

Or in the case of multiple recipients across multiple databases, the
message is

stored just once per database.

If that message contains an attachment - Does the attachment utilize the

single instance storage per Data Store (database)?

I don't think it does, but need to ask the question to the more

Try creating a new store. Move all the mailboxes to the new store and see if
that clears up the corruption problem.

Cheers.

Can you post the exact error? Are you doing store level backups or mailbox
level (brick level) backups?

If you are running Ent Ed, the simplest solution would probably be to create a
new mailstore and move the mailboxes over to it and then delete the corrupted
store.

That happened to us. We created a new store, moved the mailboxes and that
fixed the errors in BE.

I've a question regarding storage of data in Exchange. I understand that a
message
sent to multiple recipients will have single instance storage per Data Store.

"The idea behind single instance storage is that if a message is addressed to
multiple recipients, and these recipients are located on the same database, the
message is stored just once."

Or in the case of multiple recipients across multiple databases, the message is
stored just once per database.

If that message contains an attachment - Does the attachment utilize the same
single instance storage per Data Store (database)?

I don't think it does, but need to ask the question to the more knowledgable
group.
