Is there such thing as an Exchange 2010 sizing guide? Currently we are using Exchange 2003 and im trying to size the servers Currently we have about 4300 users and this will probably grow to 5500. I'm not aware of any that are of the detail available for Exchange 2007 - at least not yet. I can tell you that my wave the hands configuration for that many users, knowing absolutely nothing about your environment, and NOT including site resilience but including local HA, would be: 3 CAS 2 HT 3 MB You can buy servers big enough to handle each role for all those users, so a 1/1/1 is possible; but that would leave you exposed in case of any failure. OWA 2003 Security log shows failed attempts
So I just happen to be searching through my OWA server's security event viewer. I filtered by failure audit... and through the sea of my typical users putting their passwords in wrong, I notice some usernames that are clearly not my users. Here's where it gets interesting... One of the names is: Steven Van Cauteren Given such an uncommon name, a quick google shows that someone with this name works (or worked) for Microsoft in Germany. http://www.linkedin.com/pub/dir/steven/van%20cauteren Now, my question is... should I notify MS about this? I'm knee deep in a 2003 SP2 to 2010 build right now. I am by no means an Exchange guru. I'd recommend you budget some $ for a few calls to MS PSS . Some Exchange/Outlook steps needed?
Too much e-mail keeps hanging around. I have heard that some firms back up their users' C: drives. Weekly or monthly. This means that the user could listen to the Outlook request to archive old items, taking it off the Exchange server. Of course, if they need to see an archived e-mail, they bring it back in to their Outlook, and there it stays I have just added a new Exchange server, moving up to 2007, and gave all my users (less than a hundred) increased sizing. We have no date limit, either. I could set up the auto archiving to go to one of their folders on a file server. Don't know if I want to do that, though. Our file server already grows larger by the day. What do some of you do for this? I have some users who would never delete anything if I gave them this option...

Company and/or legal policy has to define: A] how old email can be, B] how often it gets deleted, and C] what happens to it then. Then it's up to you to enforce those limits... We are using Symantec Enterprise Vault to archive 2k mailboxes. All emails older than 1 month will be archived and kept for 7 years according to legal policy. The meeting went less than stellar. We were looking to them for recommendations and they couldn’t provide. Looks like the project might be postponed for a couple of months until we get some compatibility issues worked out, most important to see if the latest version of Cisco Unity will be support with Exchange 2010. Unity does not yet support Exchange 2010 (they are hoping to have compatibility available in Unity 8 in Q1 of this year, but that is a guess at this point), but I can tell you that Exchange 2010 UM works quite nicely with Cisco’s Call Manager (or whatever they are calling it today) and is much richer a UM client than Unity is. It might not hurt to mention that to your Cisco sales rep of choice when having the discussion of Unity’s release dates. I've done it in a lab, and I'm aware of a fortune 500 company who has done it in the real world. Why do you think it's going to be more painful?
