RE: How to exmerge/export a mailbox > 2GB

2011-08-02 Thread Level 5 Lists
I did this on a bunch of 10+gb mailboxes on e2k3 by using Outlook 2010. I
initially purchased 2 products that didn't get the job done (edb mounters) and
then looked at ontrack which used to work and decided to just use outlook 2010
for the 10 mboxes.

Have an e-discovery request on a user that has an 8 GB mailbox (Exchange 2003).
Can I use a Exchange 2007 CAS to export the mailbox to a pst. Or do I need a
third party application.

Re: Exchange 2010 Disk Configuration

2011-08-02 Thread Harry Singh
James,

Forgive the questions, but I'm at a medium-sized shop and am just trying to
put the pieces together.

How big are the 16 drives you have in, presumably, the 8 RAID-1 pairs ?

Each MBX server has 2 MSA70 SAS arrays directly attached via RAID10 via an
external SAS controller installed inside each MBX server, correct?

That setup just plain sounds really cool and really
intense... technically speaking. Thanks for the info.

I'm thinking about budgeting for something similar to the MSA70 for a
document management project upcoming for 2012.

RE: Exchange 2010 Disk Configuration

2011-08-02 Thread Rupprecht, James R
70,000 seats (soon to be 80,000). 2G quota
2 HUB, 5 CAS, 9 MBX all physical
3 replicas, one will move off-site in the next six months
Netscaler HLB for CAS systems
MBX servers are HP DL380 G6, 72G ram
MBX servers have 16 internal 2.5 SAS drives for boot, swap, utility and
transaction logs. Disks run in mirrored pairs
MBX servers each have 2 HP MSA70 2.5 SAS fully-populated arrays attached
RAID10. Current drives are 600G. Future expansion will happen by replacing
drives with larger capacity spindles and adding up to 1 additional MSA70 if
needed.
Backup hourly using DPM 2010 to DAS. In this case the disks are 2T SATA
spindles.
Weekly full backup from DPM to spectralogic tape robot.

Our entire E2010 infrastructure (not including the robot which handles backup
for many other systems) cost less than half of what a single 240 disk SAN frame
would have cost.

MS says their SAS failure rates are about 2 1/2 percent a year... this is about
what we are seeing too.

We currently have 400GB worth of data on our Exchange 2007 setup.  From what
I’ve read, we can expect that to double or triple when we move to Exchange 2010
and lose single instance storage.
What type of disk configuration are you using for 2010?  Local disks or a SAN?

RE: Outlook Social Connector

2011-08-02 Thread Young, Darren
I'm personally using it with Facebook and LinkedIn as well in Outlook 2010. We
have perhaps 30 GAL photos in AD at this point. Overall I like it, the Facebook
part is so so, it's at least aware of the FB privacy settings. Not 100% sure I
like seeing some people's faces when they email me though.

Interesting thing I've discovered: there are lots of people that use work email
addresses on Facebook. Someone outside our department installed the connector
on 2010 then called us up asking why other people can see their Facebook posts
from Outlook. Well, YOU'RE the one that used your work email on FB..

Then, like this email list, it's showing Chris M., Systems Analyst at Sam
Houston State University in the social connector pane via LinkedIn.

There are also times when someone emails me and they have zero FB settings
Outlook slows down trying to pull in all their wall posts. I'm wondering if we
should find a way to only allow the connector to show GAL photos and not allow
connections to FB, LinkedIn, etc.

Doesn't surprise me. One of my guys called me to say that my photo was showing
against an email from someone else. Hooked up to his PC and sure enough it
was. Closed Outlook and went back in, right photo displayed.

I think my "concern" with the social connector is that for 2007 it may be a
sledgehammer to crack a walnut, but I really like the GAL photo concept as it's
such a simple way to actually know who's emailing you within your business
(names to faces and all that)

Interesting. I thought you had to specifically configure your Exchange server
to get the photos included in the OAB? Or you mean you've done that and still
have the odd issue?

We've had "strangeness" with Outlook 2010 when it's in cached mode. Seems to
take days sometimes for the client to get the photo.

I wondered if anyone is using the Outlook Social Connector and if you can share
any problems/pitfalls/issues to be aware of?

I'm considering installing it simply so that Outlook 2007 will work with GAL
photos stored in Active Directory.

It looks like Microsoft make a GPO .adm file specifically for it that lets you
lock it down, but I'd still appreciate any feedback from anyone who may have
gone down a similar route.

Thanks,
Paul

What type of disk configuration are you using for 2010? Local

RE: Exchange 2010 Disk Configuration

2011-08-02 Thread Michael B. Smith
I have a large University customer that eliminated their SAN when they
installed Exchange 2010.

They needed fast expensive disk with Exchange 2003 and SQL 2005 and now with
Exchange 2010 and SQL 2008 (and cheap memory) - they don't need fast expensive
disk anymore.

They also back up to DAS. We put in 12TB Windows Storage Servers with DPM 2010.
Works very well.

Michael, do you have any customers that have implemented DAS when they own a
SAN?
Right now, we're questioning how we'd back up the DAS environment if we went
that direction.

Greetings Gurus,

We currently have 400GB worth of data on our Exchange 2007 setup. From what
I've read, we can expect that to double or triple when we move to Exchange 2010
and lose single instance storage.

What type of disk configuration are you using for 2010? Local disks or a SAN?

Backup Exec and IMG folders

2011-08-02 Thread Steve Hart
We're using Backup Exec 11D to backup our Exchange 2007 servers. We're running
low on disk space in our backup store, so I'm looking at what I can delete.

In addition to the .bkf files, I'm seeing folders called IMG01 - IMG22.
It looks like the system is creating one of these with each daily backup. They
seem to contain all of the daily log files and copies of the Exchange
databases. It doesn't seem that these are being deleted, as our retention
policy is set for 14 days, and we have them back over a month.

Is anyone familiar enough with Backup Exec and the Exchange agents to tell me
what these are and if we can safely delete the old ones?

RE: Outlook Social Connector

2011-08-02 Thread Paul Hutchings
Doesn't surprise me. One of my guys called me to say that my photo was showing
against an email from someone else. Hooked up to his PC and sure enough it
was. Closed Outlook and went back in, right photo displayed.

I think my "concern" with the social connector is that for 2007 it may be a
sledgehammer to crack a walnut, but I really like the GAL photo concept as it's
such a simple way to actually know who's emailing you within your business
(names to faces and all that)

I wondered if anyone is using the Outlook Social Connector and if you can share

I'm considering installing it simply so that Outlook 2007 will work with GAL

It looks like Microsoft make a GPO .adm file specifically for it that lets you
lock it down, but I'd still appreciate any feedback from anyone who may have
gone down a similar route.

Thanks,
Paul

RE: Outlook Social Connector

2011-08-02 Thread Young, Darren
We've had "strangeness" with Outlook 2010 when it's in cached mode. Seems to
take days sometimes for the client to get the photo.

RE: Exchange 2010 Disk Configuration

2011-08-02 Thread Paul Hutchings
I've just moved our last mailbox from 2003 to 2010. On our 2003 server we were
using 410gb of disk space, on the new one we're using 440gb.

We did have quite a long deleted item retention on the old server which won't
yet have built up on the new box, so that's going to sway the numbers a bit,
but equally the limits on the 2010 box are much more relaxed so I'd expect some
growth.

Basically I was quite surprised by that as a bit like yourself I was half
expecting something hideous in terms of space usage.

As for disks, run the sizer spreadsheet and see what it spits out. 2010 is an
order of magnitude lower than 2003 and something like 90% lower IO than 2007 so
unless you have a big environment, other than stuff like separating
logs/databases there's little reason for huge fast arrays.

Thanks,

RE: Exchange 2010 Disk Configuration

2011-08-02 Thread Michael B. Smith
That amount that the data will grow is almost completely based on your SIS.
I've seen between 20% and 50%. I won't say that 200% or 300% is impossible -
but I'd say it's atypical.

The only clients I have that are using SAN already have a large SAN investment.
New deployments have been DAS, almost exclusively.
