RE: Lync uninstallation assistance

2011-08-19 Thread Rhett Thatcher
We had a similar situation, had to install it on a test SQL server (long story)
then move it to a prod SQL server. You don't have to uninstall just move the
SQL Store around. This process is a bit of a PITA but does work. The steps are
basically

* Add a Standard Edition pool to you topology (It uses a local SQL
Express type instance)

* Move the Central Management Server role to the Standard Edition server

* This allows you to remove the Central Management Server (old SQL
server) from the topology

* Backup the DB of the old SQL server

* Update the topology with the new SQL server

* Restore the DB on the new SQL server

* Move the Central Management Server Role to the new server

* Remove the Standard Edition Pool

Here is the how to that I used, follow step by step for the most part.
http://blogs.technet.com/b/nexthop/archive/2010/12/20/change-a-pool-database-instance-when-the-pool-hosts-the-central-management-server.aspx

It's a whole lot of fun...

I recently performed an install to a single-forest / single-domain environment
to a remote standalone SQL database server. In this setup I have a W2K8 server
running as the FEP along with another W2K8 server designated as the archive /
monitoring server. The W2K3 AD schema was extended at the forest with the new
attributes and the SQL instance was created allowing for a successful
installation of the configuration store. That design has changed and I now need
to install to a database to be created on a new W2K8 sql cluster. I don't have
a test bed to test against so I'm running wild in production. From the looks of
it I can navigate to the Control Panel and remove it but I'm looking for a way
to remove the schema attributes along with removing the databases from the sql
server. I've yet to run across a complete step-by-step so I'm wondering if
anyone has run across any gotchas, can provide any direction, or links on this
process?

Any responses appreciated.

Accessing 2003 mailbox from 2007 CAS

2011-08-19 Thread David Liu
Hi,
In the process of transitioning to 2010 from 2003 & I have been compiling
detailed project list & following the questions/answers specifically from
Paul Hutchings & MBS. Very helpful.

And this preface a series of questions I will be asking the gurus as we move
forward so thanks in advance,

AD background: Single forest (e.g. example.internal) @ windows 2003 FFL.
Multiple child domains (child1.example.internal; child2.example.internal).
All child domains at Win2k3 DFL. Schema has been updated to Ex2k10 SP1
level.
Exchange: within this Ex2k3 example.internal Exchange org multiple
administrative groups were created, e.g. na-example; apac-example;
emea-example...etc. All Ex2k7 nodes are @ SP2 and above.
DNS: split DNS but our public namespace (i.e. example.com) is also set up
internally & modified for Exchange, so mail.example.com is consistent from
both internal & external access.

In the last two years, apac/emea have both set up ex2k7 in their own child
domains (e.g. Ex2k7 in apac.example.internal and emea.example.internal) &
specifically apac has published autodiscover.example.com to point to their
Ex2k7 CAS server (apmail.example.com).

Today I wanted to test mail redirection as i want to make sure that when we
bring up our 2k10 CAS in NA, redirection will occur for mailboxes in
na-example (ex2k3), emea-example (ex2k7), and apac-example (ex2k7)

When I log into apmail. example.com I had expected for redirection to my
na-2003 mailbox to occur but instead am getting the following error:

"Outlook Web Access could not find a mailbox for na\username. If the problem
continues, contact technical support for your organization and tell them the
following: The mailbox may be stored on a Microsoft Exchange 2000 or
Microsoft Exchange 2003 server, or the Active Directory user account was
created recently and has not yet replicated to the Active Directory site
where this Client Access server is hosted."

Google-fu returns http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938444 which suggests its
a read-permission not added to the user object needing to access. So I
added Exchange Servers security group to the AD test user object's security
permissions but still am running into the same error. Any thoughts?

RE: Room Booking - All Day Events

2011-08-19 Thread Alice Goodman
Seems to me that I have seen issues here with all-day events that DON'T book as
busy and other folks booking shorter meetings right over them. I always tell
people to check the "show as busy" box when booking all day events. And
perhaps it is because I am still on a mixed 2003/2010 environment and hopefully
that issue will go away once fully on 2010.

I've never seen it stated explicitly that it does change it for an all day
event, but I can't imagine the thing working reliably at all if it doesn't.

Even if the booking attendant wouldn't allow the double booking, the resource
would still be showing up as available in a free busy search, and users would
be trying to reserve it and complaining when it showed available, but then
denied their request.

Thanks Rob, that is what I would expect, but there's been a couple of things
the attendant does that don't tie in with what I'd have expected.

Presumably the same thing goes for the all-day event scenario - the attendant
will always set the "show as" to busy even if the user leaves Outlook on the
default?

All of my test booking seem to confirm this but a second opinion would be great.

Subject: RE: Room Booking - All Day Events
By default, the booking attendant will not double book.

You can double book, but to do it you have to go in and explicitly change the
Allowconflicts setting from the default of $false to $true, and set the
ConflictPercentageAllowed and MaximumConflictInstances, using the
set-calendarprocessing cmdlet.

You can end up with double bookings if you give users full access to the
calendar and they manually add the appointments to the calendar. The
AllowConflicts only applies to the behavior of the Booking Attendant. It
doesn't apply a restriction to the calendar itself.

Subject: Room Booking - All Day Events

Just after a sanity check that I'm not missing anything here - on Exchange 2010
if I setup a room/equipment mailbox and use the booking attendant, it seems
that if I send a meeting request from Outlook as an "all day event" with the
default of "show as free", the book attendant automatically marks the time in
the room/equipment calendar as busy, which is obviously sensible.

I just want to be sure that I haven't overlooked anything and that there are no
circumstances, regardless of client version, where a booking will show as
"free" in the calendar of the resource?

Essentially, can you still double-book using the booking attendant and Exchange
2010 SP1 RU3v3?

Thanks,
Paul

WE have a similar setup here

One major difference:

Our wireless settings are such that when you log in to Wireless A, you're on
the network so Exchange works like your hard wired

Sign onto Wireless B and it's set for public and outside vendors use and you
will be asked for password

I can ping the exchange server; the DNS and resolves it. The only difference is
it is on a different vlan.

Most likely, settings provided by the wireless network are different. Compare
your ipconfig /all one to the other.

I have Outlook 2010 and Exchange 2010 - the issue is when I connect to the
wired network everything is ok.

When I connect to the wireless network I keep getting prompted for a password.

Does anyone have any ideas why this is?
Thanks in advance.

RE: Exchange 2010 Crashed

Hello Michael,

I have managed to get the server up - Is there something I have to do first
before trying to remove this box?

Are you referring to setup.exe /m:RecoverServer?

Subject: RE: Exchange 2010 Crashed
If the old server account is still in the domain then the most straightforward
way is to build a new machine with the same name and add it to the domain. Then
install Exchange using the recover server switch from the command line. Once
complete, remove Exchange correctly using add/remove programs. You can use a
virtual machine to do this, and that way it can be done in less than an hour.

That is the only supported method to remove Exchange 2010. Manual removal, such
as using adsiedit is not supported and could easily cause your existing machine
to become non-operational.

Simon.

I have an Exchange 2010 that crashed (SRV-02) - no way of getting the data back.

I since have installed a new Exchange 2010 box (EX-01) and noticed some of the
old Exchange 2010 information is still there.

Is there an article on how to clean this up?

Thanks in advance
