RE: One domain/two locations setup
This is called site resilience. It's discussed, in detail, here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd638121.aspx However, it does sound like you've got some basic misconfigurations with certificates and DNS. However, you don't provide enough information to analyze that. I suggest you start with an Exchange BPA run, fix the issues described there, then check out the above documentation. Let us know when you have specific questions/issues. Regards, Michael B. Smith Consultant and Exchange MVP http://TheEssentialExchange.com From: Jiri Kukol [mailto:jku...@wurts.com] Sent: Tuesday, August 23, 2011 3:17 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: One domain/two locations setup Scenario - one domain, two locations, two Exchange 2010 SP1 servers, both behind local ISA 2004. And one of these sites is also running a web server on a separate box that requires SSL. The goal is to have both sites function independently - if one site goes down, users at the other site should not be affected at all. It works fine for incoming and outgoing email (both servers are listed in external DNS and both can send messages out directly) but I keep running into problems with Outlook client connectivity. Most likely with autodiscover and certificates when trying to connect from outside either network (on the road, at home, etc.). What would be a correct way to set it up? I keep running into certificate problems no matter what I try - the ISA box that also handles the regular web site traffic uses a wildcard Go Daddy certificate (*.domain.com) and clients connecting from outside the internal networks don't seem to like it. And clients trying to connect to the other site server connect first to this server because that's where the autodiscover points. The setup works fine for users connected to one of the internal networks and for OWA access, but not for Outlook when outside the internal networks. Both Exchange boxes have Go Daddy certificates (mail1.domain.com and mail2.domain.com) installed. Any suggestions? I spent quite a bit of time reading whatever I could find but I cannot figure it out. Thanks. RE: One domain/two locations setup
I ran the BPA tests and it mostly passed (there were few warnings about things that don't really matter - old drivers, log sizes, etc.). I also ran the Remote Connectivity Analyzer and that hinted at one potential problem - the ISA boxes were not forwarding requests to the rpc folder on the Exchange boxes. Once I added that reference to the ISA boxes, it seems to become much better (I still need to test it a bit more but at least it has not failed immediately). Is there a potential security problem with this? The folder is setup right now to require SSL but I am not sure if anything else is needed. I will try to go through the suggested documentation but that is lots of reading:). It will take me a while... Thanks. Jiri From: Michael B. Smith [mailto:mich...@smithcons.com] Sent: Tuesday, August 23, 2011 2:20 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: One domain/two locations setup This is called site resilience. Smith Consultant and Exchange MVP http://TheEssentialExchange.com From: Jiri Kukol [mailto:jku...@wurts.com]mailto:[mailto:jku...@wurts.com] Sent: Tuesday, August 23, 2011 3:17 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: One domain/two locations setup Scenario - one domain, two locations, two Exchange 2010 SP1 servers, both behind local ISA 2004. Thanks. RE: Earthquake NW of Richmond
Well, the fault line is well known. After all, the Appalachian Mountains didn't arise from nowhere. But yes, the plate boundaries are quite far away. There is some speculation that this is an after-effect of yesterday's Colorado quake, causing an adjustment down East. I know that here (Charlottesville, VA; just 25 miles from Mineral, VA - where the epicenter was) - inspections are ongoing for power, gas, etc. There was some minor damage. But I've not heard of anything significant. Now, given how the Richter scale works, I wouldn't be surprised if it only took a slightly stronger earthquake to incur significantly more damage.
