RE: Cloud-Based Email Filtering

2012-07-02 Thread Alan Davies
I'll second that - about 10 years experience with them across multiple
roles. No issues at all. If you think this exposes you to additional
operational risk or security risk, you probably overestimate greatly
your own operational or security capabilities! ;o)

That said, the portal could sometimes be easier to use and Symantec
taking over fills me with dread for the future development of the
service ..

Honestly, cloud services for email and web traffic are an absolute
no-brainer for me these days. It's such a great fit and great price
that you'd have to be trying *really* hard to do better, let alone
cheaper, internally - I've never come across a company that does so.
The additional benefits of removing Internet peering touchpoints from
your network shouldn't be underestimated either from a security
perspective. If you do both of these things and also enforce device
control on authorised media (preferably along with a policy for offline
scanning prior to internal use once they touch a non-company machine),
then malware is going to have a seriously hard time getting onto your
systems (not that I wouldn't recommend application whitelisting, removal
of admin, etc. and all other sensible host measures).

Re: Exchange 2010 AD Topology service weirdness

2012-07-02 Thread Richard Stovall
This morning it gives the following:

C:\Windows\system32nltest /dsgetsite
Default-First-Site-Name
The command completed successfully
I did not run this Saturday when experiencing the issue. Also the 2080
events have all been good since the records for the DCs disappeared on
Saturday.
On Sun, Jul 1, 2012 at 10:07 PM, Michael B. Smith mich...@smithcons.comwrote:

*Subject:* Exchange 2010 AD Topology service weirdness

 ** **

I applied SP2 UR3 today to my single Exchange 2010 server. Now, after a
few minutes of uptime, the AD topology service appears to lose the ability
to reach any of the DCs in the server's local site. The App log's 2080
 events go from this:

 ** **

 In-site:

 DC4.domain.local CDG 1 7 7 1 0 1 1 7 1

 DC2.domain.local CDG 1 7 7 1 0 1 1 7 1

 dc1.domain.local CDG 1 7 7 1 0 1 1 7 1

  Out-of-site:

 SLCDC.domain.local CDG 1 7 7 1 0 1 1 7 1

 ** **

 to this:

 ** **

 In-site:

 DC4.domain.local CDG 1 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0

 DC2.domain.local CDG 1 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0

 dc1.domain.local CDG 1 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0

  Out-of-site:

 SLCDC.domain.local CDG 1 7 7 1 0 1 1 7 1

 ** **

 ** **

In about 15 minutes after a reboot.

 ** **

Everything is still working, but I have no idea what's going on. One
thing to note, I did try to install UR3 without running it from an elevated
command prompt and it failed. That's when I first noticed this. A reboot
of the server cleared up the 2080 issue briefly, but it returned when I
installed RU3 and it succeeded. The local DCs are all up and running
 without issue.

 ** **

There are also tons of 2084 and 2085 events on the Exchange server related
 to this. For example:

 ** **

Process STORE.EXE (PID=5800). No Global Catalog server is up in the local
site 'Default-First-Site-Name'. Exchange Active Directory Provider will use
the following out of site global catalog servers:

 SLCDC.domain.local

 ** **

Any thoughts out there about how to fix this?

RE: Cloud-Based Email Filtering

2012-07-02 Thread Alan Davies
Lol .. no comment! ;)

Yes, you're quite right about it being a chokepoint. However it's a well
defended and hugely redundant implementation of a service that should easily
surpass any controls, operational or security, that the vast majority of
businesses could put in place. It's a massively high-throughput system -
copying mail for later perusal, controls aside, would be rather impractical.
Your ISP is a far higher risk and more likely location for such snooping.

At the end of the day, a decent data classification and handling policy is the
correct solution there. Appropriate use of TLS and/or S/MIME will remove the
confidentiality/integrity concerns. DoS comes down again to the terms of
service and again is more likely to be realised through your ISP's
capabilities. Know your vendors and independently audit them where appropriate.

RE: MX priority and failures/retries.

2012-07-02 Thread Michael B. Smith
In my reading of the specification (RFC 5321, section 5.1), this isn't clear,
and is therefore indeterminate and dependent upon implementation details.

My guess is that until the most preferred MX record is repaired (or the server
is taken offline so that connection attempts fail), you are screwed.

You can force this by some TCP hack-ish-ness. Create a manual route that points

I have my opinion on this but wanted some more.

I have an outside domain that a user is trying to send to. They have 3 MX
records with priorities. The lowest priority is messed up. The remote server
answers on telnet but then hangs up a split second later with no error code
sent. Should my exchange server then try the next priority listing in the MX
record or should it continue to keep trying the bad record?

Subject: MX priority and failures/retries.

RE: Job posting: Sr. Exchange Admin at FIU

2012-07-02 Thread Maglinger, Paul
I've seen lower rates from universities, typically with the explanation that
you (and sometimes wife and family) can attend for free and that offsets the
difference. That makes it a great deal if you have kids that are of college
age.

I spent 12 years in purgatory at a university. It's on par for universities.
Don't count on free education for anyone though. Benefits may be redeeming,

Re: Exchange 2010 AD Topology service weirdness

2012-07-02 Thread Richard Stovall
Further update:

At least some of the weirdness (the disappearing records) appears to
be related to a known bug in Server 2008 and 2008 R2.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2408181

Why the 6TO4 adapters that weren't there before appeared after rebooting is
still a mystery. There is similar behavior documented in Win 7 and 2008
R2, but the set of circumstances doesn't exist on my DCs (there are
obviously no wireless hosted networks).
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/980486

On Sat, Jun 30, 2012 at 7:38 PM, Richard Stovall rich...@gmail.com wrote:

Update. It appears to have been related to IPv6 DNS entries for the DCs.
While troubleshooting, I noticed that I could not ping them via IPv6.
Odd. I next discover that there are 2 IPv6 records for each DC.
Also Odd. I deleted them both for DC2 (I chose this one because it holds
all the FSMO roles) and ran ipconfig /registerdns. Nothing seemed to
change, so I rebooted DC2. Lo and behold, in a few minutes the next 2080
 event goes back to CDG 1 7 7 1 0 1 1 7 1 for DC2 and stays CDG 1 0 0 1 0 0
 0 0 0 for DCs 1 and 4. I deleted the IPv6 records for the other two,
rebooted them, and now Exchange can communicate with all my DCs again.

Clearly I need to understand IPv6 better. During all of this I noticed
that ipconfig /all gives different output from before and after the
reboots. Before rebooting the last DC, I redirected the output of ipconfig
/all to a text file, and did the same after rebooting. The differences
 were:

 1) Before rebooting, ipconfig /all had entries for IPv6 Address,
 Site-local IPv6 Address, and Link-local IPv6 Address. After rebooting,
 only Link-local IPv6 Address remained.
 2) Before rebooting, there was no section for Tunnel adapter 6TO4 Adapter.
After rebooting, this section is present.

Lastly, I have just gone back to DNS and all of the domain level IPv6
records for all of my DCs are gone. Dcdiag /test:dns shows missing
records at both the domain level and for gc._msdcs.domain.local, however
there are records at gc.msdcs.domain.local for each DC. These match
the addresses in each 6TO4 adapter.

Despite this latest oddity, Exchange is now happy, and everything appears
to be functioning normally, so I'm heading home. I'll see how things are
in the morning and will post if there are changes.

Does anyone have any pointers about the behavior described? 6TO4 adapters
appearing after reboot, records appearing then disappearing, etc?

 Thanks,
 Richard

I applied SP2 UR3 today to my single Exchange 2010 server. Now, after
a few minutes of uptime, the AD topology service appears to lose the
ability to reach any of the DCs in the server's local site. The App log's
 2080 events go from this:

  In-site:
 DC4.domain.local CDG 1 7 7 1 0 1 1 7 1
 DC2.domain.local CDG 1 7 7 1 0 1 1 7 1
 dc1.domain.local CDG 1 7 7 1 0 1 1 7 1
  Out-of-site:
 SLCDC.domain.local CDG 1 7 7 1 0 1 1 7 1

 to this:

  In-site:
 DC4.domain.local CDG 1 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0
 DC2.domain.local CDG 1 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0
 dc1.domain.local CDG 1 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0
  Out-of-site:
 SLCDC.domain.local CDG 1 7 7 1 0 1 1 7 1

In about 15 minutes after a reboot.

There are also tons of 2084 and 2085 events on the Exchange server
 related to this. For example:

Process STORE.EXE (PID=5800). No Global Catalog server is up in the
local site 'Default-First-Site-Name'. Exchange Active Directory Provider
will use the following out of site global catalog servers:
 SLCDC.domain.local

Any thoughts out there about how to fix this?

RE: Cloud-Based Email Filtering

2012-07-02 Thread John Matteson
Hi Alan:

Comment all you like. J

Guess it comes down to the level of paranoia I’ve become
accustomed to over the years while boring horizontal holes in the ocean, and
the last five years in Afghanistan keeping systems up in the face of
cyber-attacks and an user base who carried guns and high explosives.

Lol .. no comment! ;)

Yes, you’re quite right about it being a chokepoint. However it’s a well
defended and hugely redundant implementation of a service that should easily
surpass any controls, operational or security, that the vast majority of
businesses could put in place. It’s a massively high-throughput system –
copying mail for later perusal, controls aside, would be rather impractical.
Your ISP is a far higher risk and more likely location for such snooping.

At the end of the day, a decent data classification and handling policy is
the correct solution there. Appropriate use of TLS and/or S/MIME will
remove the confidentiality/integrity concerns. DoS comes down again to the
terms of service and again is more likely to be realised through your ISP’s
capabilities. Know your vendors and independently audit them where
appropriate.

Guess it’s the sailor in me.. shoving all your mail through a service is a

Just two of my concerns.

I’ll second that – about 10 years experience with them across multiple
roles. No issues at all. If you think this exposes you to additional
operational risk or security risk, you probably overestimate greatly your
own operational or security capabilities! ;o)

That said, the portal could sometimes be easier to use and Symantec taking
over fills me with dread for the future development of the service ..

Honestly, cloud services for email and web traffic are an absolute
no-brainer for me these days. It’s such a great fit and great price that
you’d have to be trying *really* hard to do better, let alone cheaper,
internally – I’ve never come across a company that does so. The additional
benefits of removing Internet peering touchpoints from your network
shouldn’t be underestimated either from a security perspective. If you do
both of these things and also enforce device control on authorised media
(preferably along with a policy for offline scanning prior to internal use
once they touch a non-company machine), then malware is going to have a
seriously hard time getting onto your systems (not that I wouldn’t recommend
application whitelisting, removal of admin, etc. and all other sensible host
measures).

Any other recommendations for external spam and malware filtering?

RE: MX priority and failures/retries. SOLVED

2012-07-02 Thread Kennedy, Jim
The plot thickens. I worked with the recipient domain. I was manually
connecting to the first server in the record...it is broke. I assumed that was
the issue, but it was more than that. Exchange was failing over to the second
and even the third MX record. And that was failing because my TLS was fubar'd
and they were sending a STARTTLS. Thank you Exchange Verbose Logging. All set
now.

Create a manual route that points
to nowhere.

RE: Exchange 2003 System Mailboxes Not in MESO Container

I can't think of any valid reason for moving them.

Subject: Exchange 2003 System Mailboxes Not in MESO Container

I'm a little puzzled as to why the previous Exchange administrator would move
the Exchange 2003 System Mailboxes from the default AD Container, Microsoft
Exchange System Objects (MESO) to a whole new Container somewhere else in AD.

I discovered this as I'm troubleshooting a 3rd party application that cannot
access the Exchange 2003 servers. Support for the application said it cannot
find the System Mailbox in the default AD location. Because I don't know why
the previous administrator moved it from the default location, I'm a little
hesitant to move them back to their default location.

Any ideas why he would have done this? Thanks in advance.

It's a little low but they will find someone. I work for a non profit in

On a side note, in my previous career (construction electrician) I helped

Re: Job posting: Sr. Exchange Admin at FIU

2012-07-02 Thread Kat Aylward Langan
Wow - the Bay Area really fscks with your mind when you are considering
salaries - back in 1997 I was making more than that for managing MS Mail
installations! Obviously I won't be going to work there!!

It's a little low but they will find someone. I work for a non profit in
Miami and make more then that with great benefits working as a sysadmin.

On a side note, in my previous career (construction electrician) I helped
the build of a dorm facility at FIU on the same campus in the early 90's.

On the screen the link brings you to, click the image segment on the
right, then select ADVANCED SEARCH. Paste the job ID in the appropriate
 field.

50 to 60K is pretty normal for university rates in Atlanta (Emory, etc.)
Outside of Atlanta, it’s much lower.

No slam intended here… I’m not “up” on salaries and such any more.

 ** **

But is that really what Senior Exchange administrator positions are going
 for these days?
