RE: SATELLITE DSL WITH EXCHANGE SMTP?

2002-07-15 Thread Bill Kuhn - MCSE
Title: Message

The
60KB uplink speed is a common speed for satellite
transmission.

This
is dealing with terrestrial RF broadband - not satellite. No clue why the
subject says satellite.

  Their least expensive
package (SkyPipeline) comes with symmetrical 256kb,
I am not familiar with the “60KB” you mentioned

  What
about the upload speed. If you are running an exchange server on the site, and
you are sending the data out over satellite, you are going to have a 60KB
upload rate or something like that aren’t you? That is what stopped us from
setting up an exchange server on a remote site.

  70ms
latency is excellent.  In fact it's so good, I don't belive there's any
way satellite can provide this kind of latency. I've used several satellite
rigs, and none come in under 500ms latency.  Either their smoking crack,
or 70 ms is some BS their makreting department came up with that refers to
internal latencies on their wired network, and doesn't represent what
customer's see over their true satellite links.  You can't pump data into
near earch orbit, and back that fast; the distances are far enough that the
speed of an electron becomes an issue.

  That
being said, most web protocols SMTP, FTP, HTTP, etc.  were initial
designed for slow dial up networks with high latency.  And will run fine
over the 500+ ms latencies of a satellite network.  Issues would arise
with other protols such as Citrix ICA, MS RDP or SNA.  If your users want
to just browse the web, and POP mail they should be
  fine.

Thanks.  Yes, we were talking about “high
speed connection”.  The issue of
latency seems to be acceptable at certain levels… One such measurement,
70ms, comes from a company called www.SkyPipeline.com.  If latency is an *ENEMY* to good line speed what will it
mean to have 70ms using “interactive applications” specifically remote
access software?

“…guaranteed
to have an average round trip packet transit time within SkyPipeline's
Broadband Wireless Network over a calendar month of 70ms or less. The
average network latency is measured as the average of 15-minute samples
taken throughout the month”

As
long as you get static ip it should be okay. Others may complain about the
terminology you are using, since DSL is a connection method and so is
satellite so I'm presuming you are talking about satellite for high speed
connectivity. There will be latency but it shouldn't matter too
much

Subject: VIRUS HELL ...help?

TIA---

I am looking for a bit of help on the antivirus problems I am having
today.

Today there seems to be heavy virus activity regarding email with an
attachment "decrypt-password.exe" These files are being blocked at the
exchange gateway. Only the "alert.txt message comes through with the
original email. However, there must be some form of embedded VB script in
the body of the message. As the message hits the inbox, it somehow enables
the "Preview pane" on the inbox, makes this message always be the first
message and runs the script. What I am looking for is some way to disable
the preview pane (before opening outlook) so that I can click on the inbox
and delete the message. I do not want to add the "security patch" to
outlook, as this is not an option currently.

Does anyone know of a reg-hack where I can disable the preview pane for
Outlook??? Please let me know any and all ideas. \

BIG THANKS!

I was in the process of trying to resolve this install of the new IMS when all of a
sudden, I can not receive messages from the list anymore!! I am not sure what is going
on, but they are not even getting to my old IMS anymore. It is JUST this list too.
Everything else seems to be working fine. I don't know.

Anyway, I am installing an IMS on a new Windows 2000 server (Exch 5.5) and I can not
get past the DNS issue. I tried everything. It claims that the DNS is not set up
properly, but I verified everything. The TCP IP settings are slightly different than
NT4 of course, but here is what I have set:

Append these suffixes in order:

mydomain.com

DNS suffix for this connection: mydomain.com

I also checked the "register this DNS" box but honestly don't know if that makes a
difference. I am very frustrated. I need to move this IMS soon. Does anyone have any
ideas as to why I keep getting the following message? TIA

"The Internet Mail Service requires the DNS domain to be configured on . To
configure the domain name, use the NETOWRK icon in the control panel XXX or choose
another server."

RE: Where is the POP3 Connector

2002-05-06 Thread Bill Kuhn - MCSE

If you really need to suck email from a pop server and get it to your exchange
mailboxes, you might head over to www.lockstep.com and look at IGETMAIL. IGETMAIL runs
as a service (or not - your choice) on most anything and is designed to pull POP mail
at regular intervals and deliver it to Exchange or other email servers using SMTP. It
is cheap ($69) and it works. I use it to suck mail into my E2K box out here in the
middle of nowhere over my dial-up cup-and-string connection.

Of course you can just have Outlook do it.

Has anyone else seen this today. We use the McAfee Virusscan Console on one

randomly to our Server and apply the SUPERDAT Update. Today, the SUPERDAT
failed to restart Virusscan after running the update and we all had to
reboot in order for it to become active. After the reboot, all workstations
had been updated and the Virusscan software started normally.

Hi All,
Please.. Please.. Please.. Don't use Outlook 98, it is so bug ridden
it's not funny. If you can't run Outlook 2K, then use the Outlook that
comes with Exchange 5.0. Your going to have nothing but constant
problem(s) with Outlook 98. Maybe not immediately.. But eventually you
will. Not even MS recommends 98 anymore.

RE: Antigen filter "*.*.*" - worthwhile?

2002-02-07 Thread Bill Kuhn - MCSE

I don't see the need for it.

Antigen will filter based on the last extension in a file with multiple
extensions. This is the same way Windows associates the file with an
application.

Given a file mytrojan.doc.vbs, Antigen will pick it off if you are set
to filter .VBS.

It's never missed one for me.

Subject: Antigen filter "*.*.*" - worthwhile?

We run Antigen 6.2 on our Exchange 5.5 server. We were advised by
Sybari
support to include the filter, "*.*.*", which they said are often
viruses
(e.g. annakournikova.jpg.vbs). We tried it for a while, but were
quarantining too many valid user attachments, and they rebelled, so I
compromised and removed that filter. We are filtering exe, bat, cmd,
com,
vbs, vb, js, shs, lnk, pif, scr, hta, htm, and "*.*}" (whatever that
is).
Also we are using three AV engines, and updating them frequently. As I
understand it, the "*.*.*" filter would only come into play on a new
virus
for which we don't yet have the signature, and is some other scripting
language that we are not filtering.

I'd like to get feedback on the protection compromise of not filtering
"*.*.*" attachments.

How many of you are using that filter?

Do you think it adds significant protection?

Have we missed any valuable filters?

RE: Attachment blocking Now what!

2002-02-04 Thread Bill Kuhn - MCSE

I agree. It is pretty annoying to have to enter each extension and each
action for each filter for each server by hand. I hope they will spiff
up the interface to make that easier (cut and paste, import from file,
something..).

Once you have the attachments done though... it's great!

Just block the .COM attachment (as part of your overall executable
attachment blocking policy). Even Groupshield allows you to do that.

Antigen is having no problem with it.

FW: Deperate--Still

2001-12-12 Thread Bill Kuhn - MCSE

Well I tried it and it worked!

I added filters on *.zip and *.exe.

The *.exe filter I set to quarrantine, notify, and delete.

The *.ZIP filter I set to quarrantine, NOT notify, and DETECT.

Now when sending or receiving a ZIP attachment that contains an EXE, I
get notified (even though I set it to no) that Antigen detected a ZIP
file, but the ZIP file is passed unmolested to the recipient. I do not
get notified that the ZIP contains an EXE, so apparently the specific
ZIP filter overrides any other filters.

Cool!

So I'll unhumble myself from last weeks discussion where I seemed to be
wrong about Antigen not being able to pass EXEs in ZIPs if EXEs were
filtered. Sheesh!...Like I'd be wrong about something! I knew it all
along - I just wanted to see if anyone else was smart.

RE: Deperate--Still

2001-12-07 Thread Bill Kuhn - MCSE

You are correct. I had tested filtering EXE's a while ago and thought it
worked wonderfully, but I guess I hadn't actually tried sending one in a
zip.

I just tested filtering EXEs and sent a zip with an EXE in it and
Antigen dutifully yanked it. I also tried deselecting ZIPFILES from the
file types for the EXE filter and it still pulled it.

Currently I'm not filtering EXEs.

I stand humbled..

Nope. If you filter *.exe or any other extension, Antigen will strip it
from a zip archive and replace it with .txt.

If you don't specifically filter *.ZIP (i.e. take it out of your filter
list), Antigen will ignore ZIPs.

I send ZIPs with various included file types back and forth with clients

We were lucky and got an automatic update which covered us about 15

Yep. Been there. What a pain.

Basically your OST is encrypted (whether you specify it to be or not)
and it is linked to a key that travels with your NT account.

No Account = No OST.

Go to www.officerecovery.com . They have
the converter. If what is in the OST is worth the price, their converter
will work. They have a demo that will pull all the header info from an
OST into a pst - the demo does not pull the msg body though.

Hi everyone,

I have a question about how to import mail files, specifically .ost
files !

I have an .ost file from an existing NT account created earlier say
"james" and the "james" as the name of this mailbox. Now the guy is
gone and I had deleted this account. But now we have decided to
recreate his account because we want to redirect his mail to someone
else. I am able to recreate the account and mailbox without any
problems but I need to see his previous mail that is stored from the
.ost file! Is there a way I can import/merger from Outlook client or
from the Exchange server to get his existing .ost file into this newly
created mailbox?

When I set the .ost to the path of the old mailbox it says that it isn't
the right mailbox so it can't be used!

Thanks in advance of any help you can provide.

Dan

It shouldn't use so much that it will kill the server, but what you read
is
wrong. Don't limit the amount of RAM used via Optimizer. That is
band-aiding the real problem. Store.exe will use ALL available memory
if it
can and needs it. My server has 1gb of mem and Store.exe is humming
happily
along using about 620mb worth of it. Are you running Gropeshield (I
mean
Groupshield) on your server? I'm pretty sure there was a advertised

looks
like Exchange server will use TotalRAM/4, so in the case of the server

I look after two servers for clients with Exchange Server 5.5 SP4
installed.
Recently, one of the server's STORE.EXE process (lets call it SERVER1)
started going out of control with respect to memory utilization. It
starts
at a reasonable 5M to 10M of memory used, then gradually climbs to about
300M. If I stop and restart the IS service, 400M to 500M of memory will
clear up and STORE.EXE will drop down to it's usual 5M to 10M. If I
don't
stop and restart, the server starts to crumble, complaining about
running
out of memory.

ArcServe for Small Business Server (ditto)
Latest Service Packs and hotfixes for OS

Memory for SERVER1 = 512M

The one thing they have done recently is to upgrade their Internet

RE: Information Store memory utilization is out of control

2001-11-28 Thread Bill Kuhn - MCSE

Or figure out where the real problem is. Exchange by itself should not
under any circumstance crash a server unless it is screwed somehow.

I'd immediately look at Ejac-U-Late or ArcServe and see if the problem
is in one of those. Either can cause Exchange to dig itself into a hole.

Has ArcServe been having backup problems/hung backups/etc? All kinds of
neat things can happen when it does. Are you up-to-date on any patches
for it?

Do your users have good desktop A/V that scans corporate email? If so,
can you disable Ejac-U-Late on a restart and see if things stay
functioning? Are you up-to-date on any patches for it?

The change in Networking doesn't seem like a likely culprit to me,
although the timing of the change and the start of problems is
interesting. Is EjacULate doing automatic updates over the internet. Is
it SUCCESSFULLY doing them now?

Anything else interesting/different in your event logs?

True, but he says after a time the memory usage crashes his box, so it

This is common. STORE.EXE will use all available memory unless manually

I look after two servers for clients with Exchange Server 5.5 SP4
installed. Recently, one of the server's STORE.EXE process (lets call it
SERVER1) started going out of control with respect to memory
utilization. It starts at a reasonable 5M to 10M of memory used, then
gradually climbs to about 300M. If I stop and restart the IS service,
400M to 500M of memory will clear up and STORE.EXE will drop down to
it's usual 5M to 10M. If I don't stop and restart, the server starts to
crumble, complaining about running out of memory.

Hi,
Our company is moving to Exchange and we will be purchasing Exchange
2000

licenses
when you by Exchange. Is this accurate? Can someone elaborate? We have a
number of clients who need email but don't have Office.

Both.

You have choices. Make the choices and stand by your decisions.

You don't like MS products or the way they do business? Then use
something else and quit whining.

There are plenty of choices. They may not be as user-friendly or capable
as MS products, but if you don't want to pay for the MS products, don't.

Folks,

Thanks for the responses, but what I really want to know is not when the
new
plan goes into effect (though that was helpful), but what your shop's
response is/will be. Are you planning to buy the Upgrade Advantage for
your
BackOffice products?

There is an exception to the rule (well maybe not an exception, but I
can't
think of the right word) and that is that the Backoffice CAL will no
longer
be available after October 1st and you will need to get CAL 'Core'
packs
which I believe will be more expensive. Backoffice CAL's were the
cheapest
way to get EX, SQL & NT Cals together.

RE: CDW

2001-08-21 Thread Bill Kuhn - MCSE

I agree on everything except the brand.

When servers are involved, I don't want to have to sort out which vendor
is telling me the truth when sh*t happens and the fingers start
pointing. Buying a solid name brand single vendor server is worth the
extra $$ in my time and my peace of mind, not to mention company
downtime.

I was solidly a Compaq server kinda guy until the last couple of years.
Compaq has been going downhill in support and overall reliability. I'm
much more likely to go for a Dell these days.

I've bought name brand and off brand and had good/ bad experiences on
both. One office right now has a Gateway 2000 PC as it's server (only 5
people so there's not much load) but it has hardware problems. The only
way I can resolve is to call Adaptec on the controllers, Seagate on the
drives, Kingston on the RAM and GW2K on the motherboard. My point is
this, with Compaq or whomever, you call Compaq for all the hardware
issues and they replace with very little hassle. If you piece meal a
server from another company or yourself, you now own the component
warranty and it's a pain in the A$$.

Now from what I have heard, GWK sells a server and there are a million
small shops selling servers - will they be here in 1 year when the
market continues to spiral down. What utilities and installation
software routines do they accompany with the products? I stick with
Compaq on the server as they are simply the best.

My experience, my $.02.

There are a lot better faster and cheaper servers around that don't have
a name brand. We used to shop around until we found a dealer that did
white boxes. These are genuine Intel Boxes that cost a hell of a lot
less. My last server we got 2 weeks ago was a 4U box with quad Xeon
700's with an external DPT array holding 7 36GB harddrives and 4 Gigs of
memory. It is a beast of a box that cost us around 16K. I know for a
fact I could get the same specs for the Compaq you ordered for around
6-7k easy. If anyone wants a contact please feel free to email me.

I think they offer a service to dump individual OSTs to PSTs on a per

Just finished running the demo against the lost OST file. What a
cracking piece of software. Now if it can do I so can I if I can find
the technical document that tells how to replace the key.

The demo has however given me the ability to view the content of the OST
file but not the content of each mail. Guess that's what they want $500
for. But at least I can see what it is I don't have.

Thanks

I seem to remember however seeing an article somewhere that gave a

export them to PST and then into the new exchange server.

Do any of you guys know how to recover an OST with a replaced ID key?
