The user could try to consolidate some rules, or delete old
 ones. But as
William said, there is no way around this.

He has already done this, but thanks for the idea tho ;)

The limit is 32k of rules. It is an Outlook limitation
 really. They have
to fit in a single RPC packet. No, it can't be increased.

Thank you, atleast now i know i can stop my search for answers.

 Hello all,

My employer has a lot of filter rules in his Outlook, which
 are all stored
on the server. The problem is that he now gets an error when
 he wants to add
new rules. Is there a way to increase the maximum number of
 rules on the

 Thanks very much in advance,

 Hello all,

I have a small problem with OWA and 1 user, he keeps getting access
denied and in the eventlog i see that there is no such user or bad
 password.
Now when he logs on OWA from his office he has no problems at
 all, using
 the same login/password.
The only difference there is, is that it failed when he tried
 it from UK
and Belgium, both using MSIE 5.0. The Ex2k server is in the
 Netherlands
and over here and in Germany he had no problem logging on using OWA, I
think the IE 5.0 is the problem but I am not sure.
When i go to OWA, I use the same URL as he does, but I get a domainbox
and he does not (not that it must be used, but still), I am using IE
 6.0.

 Any ideas?

 TIA,

 Bob

 Hello everyone,

I'm having a problem with Windows 2000 Professional when browsing the
 network for shared folders.
Specifically, on a server holding over 10,000 design files
 (roughly 20kb
 each in size).
It's taking anywhere from 30 to 40 seconds to pull up the
 files on the
 screen.
However, if I go to a Windows 95 machine and browse the
 network to the same
folder, it brings it up in about 3 to 4 seconds.
 Any suggestions???

Actually from http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q153119
The two ENTER commands conform to Request for Comments (RFC) 822, which states that
822 Commands must be followed by a blank line.

I never used a subject line when i tested SMTP tho, it worked fine for me without one

NT 4 passwords are easily cracked with L0phtcrack 3, amongst other things.
Win2k password are not easy to crack though, first of all you do not have access to
the SAM database when the OS is running, so forget bruteforcing.
Second, if Syskey is activated, you can forget about cracking the password, period.
Even that Linux bootdisk can't change the password then.

Well, if you can deactivate Syskey, you already got sufficient rights to change admin
password in the User manager ;)
Could you point me to any of these utilities that can actually crack a win2k's SAM

I am pretty sure about this not being so easy at all, I suppose that if there even is
such a tool, it will be from some big company asking mucho $$$ for it's use.

But, if I'm wrong and you're right, could you prove it to me? (I'm pretty convinced I

recommendation for a whitepaper Microsoft or not for securing

EFS, Syskey Mode and security policies applied to the local machine.

Again, you need admin rights to perform that task, so you can
 already change
 tha administrator password ;)

He's not trying to crack a normal user's password here but the
administrator's, it's different... you don't háve any rights
 to perform
tasks that require admin rights, that includes using pwdump2
 and disabling
 syskey ;)

NT 4 passwords are easily cracked with L0phtcrack 3, amongst
  other things.
Win2k password are not easy to crack though, first of all you
  do not have
access to the SAM database when the OS is running, so forget
  bruteforcing.
Second, if Syskey is activated, you can forget about cracking
  the password,
period. Even that Linux bootdisk can't change the password then.

It is amazing how secure these NT,2000,XP machines are. That

problem with OWA

2001-12-17 Thread Bob t. Berge

Hello all,

I have a small problem with OWA and 1 user, he keeps getting access denied and in the
eventlog i see that there is no such user or bad password.
Now when he logs on OWA from his office he has no problems at all, using the same
login/password.
The only difference there is, is that it failed when he tried it from UK and Belgium,
both using MSIE 5.0. The Ex2k server is in the Netherlands and over here and in
Germany he had no problem logging on using OWA, I think the IE 5.0 is the problem but
I am not sure.
When i go to OWA, I use the same URL as he does, but I get a domainbox and he does not
(not that it must be used, but still), I am using IE 6.0.

Any ideas?

TIA,

Bob

Onderwerp: From our friend Stu about his favorite OS

 NT4.0 Farewell Party: July 1, 2003

MS plans to officially withdraw NT 4.0 at July 1, 2003. From that day
you will not be able to buy it anymore, and support slowly is phased
out. MS has already started to try to phase out NT, as reported in
W2Knews issue # 311 by stopping to sell NT volume licenses. That
effectively forced anyone rolling out new servers to get the higher
 priced W2K licenses.

And last week Redmond unveiled their long-term support plans, which
indicate that it really goes away. The 'shrinkwrap' NT Server and NT
Server Enterprise Edition boxes disappear from shelves July
 1, 2002. The
rest of the Phase Out Schedule goes as follows:

January 1, 2003: Introduction of fee-based support for, among other
things, bug fixes and Windows NT non-security hotfixes.
January 1, 2004: Redmond ends non-security hotfix updates.
January 1, 2005, online Windows NT support disappears.

This obviously will make people think about moving to W2K a bit faster
these coming two years. MS is cutting off NT's life simply
 because they
want people to upgrade, and to get out of supporting the now
 5-year old
 code base.

Most of us though are very happy using NT as a plain vanilla
 mail server
or file-print box, as it works like clockwork doing that. Oh well, the
 price of progress I guess.

 Warm regards,

 Stu

Here's my 2 EUR cents about these 2 applications.

I installed Antigen on one server and ScanMail on another
 (yes i got it
 working after i applied SP2 for Ex2k).
From what i've seen so far, neither one has the ability to block *.*
except *.zip, for example. You have the choice to either block ALL
attachments without exception, or block only the files with the
extensions you provide. A point extra goes to Antigen for not just
looking at the extension but also checking the file's headers to make
sure a .jpg isn't in fact a .exe.
But ScanMail gets the extra point for the option to set how deep
compressed files should be checked for filtered extensions, hence give
you the option to ignore zipfiles(!), unlike Antigen, which
 removes the
filtered extensions from compressed files also.

The viruschecking part of both apps seem to be thorough and good.

I think i'm gonna use ScanMail instead of Antigen on our main Ex2k
server though, Antigen is good but i am missing a few features that
 ScanMail does have.

Well I just wanted to let you all know what I think about em, do what
you want to do with the info ;)

Now i could use a nice cold beer, preferably Palm (I think it's
 Belgian).

I do.
It's called Titanic (no, I am not kidding) and it's from Microsoft itself.
But all it does is check for specified subjects and/or attachment extensions.
It's free for download at ftp://ftppss.microsoft.com/outgoing/mail/w32goner55new.zip

Cool, send me a planeticket plz, i'll come over and take it from you A.S.A.P.
After that a nice holliday in Argentina sounds good to me for a month or maybe two.

Actually I really want to go to Hawaiï, I live in the Netherlands so it's really on
the other side of this forsaken planet. Does anyone out there work for some big
airport or something to send me 2 2-way tickets to Hawaiï? free of charge ofcourse ;)
damn 8 years without a holliday, I'm beginning to lose it or was that back
when I started to know Microsoft software?

Sorry for my completely useless and unwanted post.

It's a BIG SP, almost 190MB, and the patching takes quite some time, but it all went

According to scanmail, the core cannot be installed on that

RE: Aren't there supposed to be gurus in here?

2001-12-06 Thread Bob t. Berge

About the beerthing, I agree, it's going on for far too long. It's
totally unprofessional.

About your problem, have you created a SMTP connector on your Ex2k
server that forwards to your 5.5 server?
You can have it set to forward all mail to that 5.5 server or forward
mail based on a domain suffix.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Off topic rant: I find it funny how many people here jump all
 over other
people for not giving enough information when they describe
 problems, yet
those same people don't respond to messages where enough
 information is
given, presumably because it is simply too long to read, and those
best-beer-in-the-world-wankfest messages just come too fast
 and furious.

With that in mind, and hoping that nobody here feels
 insulted, I will keep
 it short...

Does anyone here know how routing within a site works between
 Exchange 2k
and Exchange 5.5(w/ADC)? Or maybe point me in the right
 direction? I have an
E2k server that just won't forward messages from the Internet
 to mailboxes
that reside on the 5.5 servers. Messages within the site work
 fine, or from
the Internet to the 5.5 server to a mailbox on the E2k server.

I've looked in archives, knowledge base, white papers...basically the
consensus is that anything going to an E2k server is
 considered inbound and
it should recognize an address within the site.

Antigen vs. ScanMail

2001-12-06 Thread Bob t. Berge

Here's my 2 EUR cents about these 2 applications.

I installed Antigen on one server and ScanMail on another (yes i got it
working after i applied SP2 for Ex2k).
But ScanMail gets the extra point for the option to set how deep
compressed files should be checked for filtered extensions, hence give
you the option to ignore zipfiles(!), unlike Antigen, which removes the
filtered extensions from compressed files also.

The viruschecking part of both apps seem to be thorough and good.

I think i'm gonna use ScanMail instead of Antigen on our main Ex2k
server though, Antigen is good but i am missing a few features that
ScanMail does have.

What kinda crap is that, copying another account takes 2 minutes, not a
couple of days.
If you are smart and use groups to assign rights to a specific group of
users, all you have to do is copy one account from someone in the same
group.
As for those insufficient rights, check if the service Microsoft

2001-12-04 Thread Bob t. Berge

Ehmm hello Bob,

I guess it's because i said crap that made you think i was trying to be
a Dick.
To me it seemed that there is a fast and probable solution instead of
the couple of days the other
Bob mentioned. I was kinda under the impression that he didn't want a
real solution, but maybe I interpreted it the wrong way, just like you
interprete my reply.
It is meant well and defenitly not to sh*t on someone's head.
If I wanted to be a Dick i wouldn't have replied at all with what I
think might be the solution to his problem, Bob.

But perhaps I could've put it in a nicer jacket, will do next time,
unless the other guy's really a Dick ofcourse ;)

Bob (#1 Bob, I said it first :P)

Objet : Exchange partition getting huge over the weekend...

 Hello!

 Exchange 2000 SP1.

The Exchange partition (M:\ drive) gets huge overly fast
 during the
weekend : from 2.1GB on friday PM to almost 9.0GB on monday
 AM. No one
is at the office during that time. I only have about 50
 mailboxes on the
server. What causes the log files to get this numerous this fast, over
the weekand when it is not the case during the week? Is there
 a way or a
tool that would allow me to view all the activity that went on on the
 mail server???

Could it be that I am being used as a relay???

 Thank you!

RE: Virus attachment to Exchange List server message

2001-11-30 Thread Bob t. Berge

It's easy tho ;)

Here's an example:

begin 755 name_of_the_file.zip
some crappy lines that pretend to be the file's data
end

; --
; begin 755 name_of_the_file.zip
; some crappy lines that pretend to be the file's data
; end

Not sure if it MUST be under the signature seperator tho, we'll see if
there's a (fake) zip attachment instead of the actual lines in the
message body ;)

Damn, everything under the presumed attachment disappears.
So here is a better example ;)

;begin 755 name_of_file.txt
;useless text that usually is the file's data, this can all be seen if
you use something cool like a textbased e-mailreader in Linux, that's
how i found out hehe ;)

 Hello Everyone.
I have a quick question about a Disaster Recovery procedure I
 am carrying
 out for a client.
 Status is as follows:

Someone has deleted critical files from the root of C:,
 WINNT.SBS, Exchsrvr
 and Arcserve.
 Client has NO GOOD BACKUP!
Exchange no longer works - Databases appear to be intact.
Exchange Admin console no longer works.
Cannot reboot Server - if I do, it will no longer come back online!!

I have managed to backup their Data onto various PC's so I
 know this is
safe. I have also taken an OFFLINE Backup of the MDBDATA Folder that
 contains Priv and Pub.

I am going to rebuild the Server, but would just like to confirm a few

RE: My IIS SMTP is being used as a relay - need help stopping this

2001-11-22 Thread Bob t. Berge

Hmmm i guess i misunderstood ;)

Failing the #1 test is bad indeed, unfortunatly i don't have any
experience on using IIS SMTP to help you solve this issue.

It's weird that all mail is from hotmail accounts tho, is someone from
the inside doing this?
Is it possible for you to post the headers of one of those e-mails here?

Hey Bob, thanks for the reply!

www.abuse.net told me I failed on TEST #1. I should also mention, the
messages getting loaded into the queue are not destined for
 my domain nor
originating from my domain. The are usually from hotmail.com
 accounts to
various other domains (but not my domain whitnall.com) and
 contain porn
links. So I think it is a relay issue.

They are not ALL originating from the exact same email
 address, but they
 are all hotmail.com accounts.

Again, as far as i see it, it is tons of _incoming_ mail... this,
ofcourse, is not relaying, you're just being fscked by some
 brainless
  *sshole.

Tell me, at what point is your mailserver allowing relaying
 according to
  abuse.net?
I'll bet it's just the last one, if this is the case than you should
stop worrying about being (ab)used for relaying, instead worry about
  someone mailbombing you.

Also, you should be able to see where those e-mails are
 coming from. Are
they all from the same host/mailserver?

3 reasons why I know (in order of finding them out)
   =20
1. The amount of incoming traffic on our T1 increased about=20
   40x as of
yesterday. 2. The # of messages in the IIS SMTP relay=20

went to www.abuse.net and used their smtp relay abuse

results showed that my server could be used as a relay.

Blocking mail

2001-11-22 Thread Bob t. Berge

Hello admins and semi-pro's ;)

I have a question; does anyone know of a way, preferably without 3rd
party software (but if all else fails...), if it is at all possible to
block someone inside our domain from receiving mail from a certain
originating host/-email address/domain?
We're running Exchange2k and the solution should not be clientside but
serverside instead.
Adding a firewallrule is no option either.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your reply Mark,

Though I have Mail Essentials, i'm not sure if i should install it, i
don't know how far it will modify original settings and files from
Exchange2k server. Will it be embedded inside Exchgange2k and/or win2k
server and annoying to remove when we decide not to purchase it?
More info and personal experiences regarding Mail Essentials will be
greataly appreciated!

Blocking a domain for all users is possible in Exchange 5.5
Perhaps for one user in Exchange 2K??

A good solution is Mails Essentials for such stuff.
Is not so expensive and a trial versiopn exists (90days)

Wayne thanks for your reply,

Yes I know about this option in EX 5.5, but i could not find such a
thing in 2k unfortunatly. Actually the options on setting rights and
other things on mailboxes in Exchange Manager is incredibly slim, can't
do sh*t :(

Make sure you run the ADUC from your Exchange 2000 server, or
 a Windows
2000 server with the admin tools and Exchange System Manager
 installed,
as the ADUC snap-in is upgraded. For each mailbox-enabled
 Windows 2000
user, you'll find a delivery restrictions button on the
 Exchange General

Don't forget that with Exchange 2000, a lot of the admin is

RE: Blocking mail

2001-11-22 Thread Bob t. Berge

Well, that didn't work :(

I created this test contact with my hotmail address as e-mail.
I then added this contact to Accept messages from everyone except:
from my co-worker's account in ADUC. When I sent him an e-mail from that
hotmail account it still arrived in his mailbox!
When I added my testuser I noticed that I could only add users from
Entire Directory OR dv02.net (which is, ofcourse, our mailserver
domain), not a choice from any address book at all.

Did I do something wrong here? Am I forgetting something?

 Subject: Blocking mail

 Hello admins and semi-pro's ;)

I have a question; does anyone know of a way, preferably without 3rd
party software (but if all else fails...), if it is at all possible to
block someone inside our domain from receiving mail from a certain
 originating host/-email address/domain?
We're running Exchange2k and the solution should not be clientside but
 serverside instead.
Adding a firewallrule is no option either.

 Thanks in advance!

RE: relay problems

2001-11-21 Thread Bob t. Berge

I think this isn't a security flaw but by design, since the recipient is
in the domain the server is responsible for it accepts and sends the
mail.
Your server does not appear to allow relaying outside your domain, which
is good.
It would be a bad thing if it would accept rcpt to:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] when helo is sent from outside your
domain.

I am not sure about this, but i think that if you would block this you
are not gonna be able to receive mail at all.

Are user getting the error from the outside? In our installation, due to
the way the router is set up with NAT, users have to type in the IP

Hello,

I've recently installed SP4 on my Exchange 5.5 server and it broke OWA.
When users type in the URL for OWA, they are prompted for authentication
as normal but then they get a 404 instead of a page asking them for
their user name and password. I have looked through the Microsoft KB for
pointers without luck. I am thinking of reinstalling OWA but before I do
so, I wanted to see if other people had had similar experiences.

Also, if I resintall OWA, don't I have to reinstall SP4 afterwards ?

Again, as far as i see it, it is tons of _incoming_ mail... this,
ofcourse, is not relaying, you're just being fscked by some brainless
*sshole.

Tell me, at what point is your mailserver allowing relaying according to
abuse.net?
I'll bet it's just the last one, if this is the case than you should
stop worrying about being (ab)used for relaying, instead worry about
someone mailbombing you.

Also, you should be able to see where those e-mails are coming from. Are
they all from the same host/mailserver?

  1. The amount of incoming traffic on our T1 increased about

RE: Difference in rights between administrators and domain admins in Exchange2000?

2001-11-19 Thread Bob t. Berge

First of all thank you for replying.
In Exchange 2000 there is no permissions tab on any mailbox. If you mean
on the client side, yes, the users who should be able to read and modify
the agenda already have the necessary rights. This problem wasn't there
from the start so back when everything worked the way it should, all
rights were set.
We only noticed this strange behaviour since a customer of ours hired a
new secretary and a new account was created. In the Outlook clients from
the users who's agenda should be available to this new user all rights
were set appropiatly, but when we wanted to add those mailboxes in her
Outlook client it failed, on clicking the Add Mailbox button the error
popped up.

Now i know that on validating a user when you are setting up a new
profile in Outlook, a registry key is added by Exchange server, so when
i add a user to the Domain Admins group áfter the user has been
validated in Outlook, nothing happens.
But when i make that user Domain Admin befóre validating, he/she can and
will thereafter be able to add other user's mailboxes, even when he/she
no longer is Domain Admin. So i think it has something to do with this
registry key.
The user is member of administrators group on the local machine (on the
win2k boxes).

 Hi all,

We got a strange problem here, this is what happens:
When a normal user in our Exchange environment creates a new
 profile in
his Outlook2000 client, his name and exchange server get underlined,
meaning they are both validated; now when that person tries to add
additional mailboxes to the profile, an error message pops up
 right away
when clicking on the Add Mailbox button stating that the user
 cannot be
 found.
Now we remove the profile from Outlook, I make that person a
 Domain Admin
and he makes a new profile in Outlook 100% similar to the previous
profile. But now when he hits the Add Mailbox everything
 works the way it
should, i can even remove him from the Domain Admins group, it keeps
 working.
When i make this person member of the group Administrators
 this does NOT
work. So obviously we're dealing with a faulty security
 setting or police
 here.
Ofcourse this solution is only temporary, on the Exchange2000 server
something must be incorrect, I just don't know where to look
 anymore. I
tried changing security settings on several objects within
 Exchange System
Manager but i couldn't find anything there.
Maybe i'm looking at the wrong picture here, but I was/am
 looking for some
object that has different rights for Administrators and
 Domain Admins, if
there is anybody out there that has a clue about what i am
 talking about,
 please help me!!

 thanks so much in advance

Hi all!

I've got this problem that I hope someone on this list could help me
with. I've been searching all the FAQ's and exchange related sites I
know of without finding any solution.

We have a win2000 network with two DC's where the exchange server
(Exchange 2000 sp1) being one of them. All servers run with sp2
installed. For some reason adding users stopped functioning. I can still
add them to the directory and all the usual network stuff works for them
(login in, accessing files etc) but for some reason the mailbox part
stopped working (can't figure out why though). When I add a new user in
Users and Computers (and check Create new Exchange mailbox) the account
is created ok but the user doesn't get any email addresses. The user
can´'t open their exchange mailbox from the client and everything just
seems to be missing when it comes to the mail stuff.

We don't get any error messages in the event logs at all. If I do a
reboot of the machine everything looks ok. All services seems to start
ok.

I have no clue to what could be wrong and since this is kind of urgent I
hope someone here could give me a hint. I really would like to avoid a
complete reinstall of exchange (and perhaps AD) which for now seems like
the only solution to me. So please help anyone.

Best wishes,

Jonas Paulsson

RE: Routing Table

2001-11-19 Thread Bob t. Berge

Interesting problem, hardly an Exchange issue tho ;)
Have you tried to set TCP/IP settings for that NIC to recieve IP from
DHCP?
Removing a NIC isn't enough, the information is still stored in win2k.
You must uninstall it through the wizard (yeah i know, i hate wizards
too).

I was trying to attempt to bring up directory replication between our US
Israel site by moving Exchange off of the VPN connection to our frame
but I had one issue stopping me. I have a route entry that won't delete
which is the Israel exchange server using the VPN connection. No matter
what I do this will not go away. This is a Intel Pro/100+. This has 2
nics which then use a virtual adapter as one nic to provide either fault
tolerance or load balancing. I have done a route delete, route -f,
removed the nics, tried disabling all but 1 nic, added IPX/SPX and
removed TCP/IP and then added TCP/IP back (then removed IPX/SPX). I am
using Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Exchange 5.5 SP4. This NIC is from
Dell. Any Suggestions?

RE: Cannot create new mailbox accounts

2001-11-19 Thread Bob t. Berge

If no memberships have been changed and you could add mailbox users
before, it looks like someone has been playing with user right
assignments in the Exchange Manager console.
Or you're no longer part of the desired group, possibly Domain Admins.

I could be wrong tho, it's just where i would try to solve this.

The exact error, when I try to create the new mailbox, is:

An error occurred while processing an e-mail address. To
 view the details
of the error, see the Application Event Log in the Windows NT
 Event Viewer
on the Microsoft Exchange Server computer.

 Microsoft Exchange Administrator
 ID no: c1030b35

Then this is the error in the event log:

 Source: MSExchange SA
 Category: General
 Event: 5011

Error You do not have the permissions required to complete
 the operation.
 occurred during address generation.

What's the exact error (error id etc)? Doe it mention any
 proxy dlls? Or
 System Attendant?

Subject: Cannot create new mailbox accounts

I am unable to create new mailbox accounts. When I select to
 create a new
Mailbox, it allows me to enter all the information about the
 user and find
the users existing NT account, but when I select OK or Apply, I get an
error that it cannot generate the e-mail address and an error was
submitted to the application error log. When I check the application
error log, it states that there were insufficient rights to create the
 address.

This problem is new and we have existing accounts that we were able to
create in the past. The Exchange and NT System Admin and
 Administrator
accounts and passwords have not changed.

Any suggestions on what the problem might be and how to resolve it?
 Thanks!
 Kimberly Crockett
