RE: Happy Thanksgiving (U.S.)
Paul brings up a good point. Some states are reconsidering their blue laws that required some stores to close on Sundays. While I used to think that being open on Sundays/holidays was a good thing I see how many families that cannot share a holiday together because a spouse or child has to work on the holiday at a non-essential store, etc.It is sad that our society cannot close non-essential businesses during holidays to allow families to nurture and be together. While in college I worked as a RT Technician in a hospital and, while I would have liked the day off, I enjoyed sitting with the elderly patients and sharing conversation with them to make the best of a holiday in the hospital. There are always so very grateful to have company and meet a new friend. Visit a nursing home over the holidays. Happy Thanksgiving! Soon I fear that we will lose all perspective of that which was Thanksgiving and only give thanks to the almighty dollar. Steve, Are you loading the disc controller drivers when you are booting from CD/DVD. Press F6 to have the boot process stop to load the RAID drivers or the OS will not see the discs. The NIC has decided that it is not connected to a network as well. I tried to do a repair on the server today, and it does not see that there is an OS already installed and asked me to load drivers (even though the OS still boots). I loaded all the disk drivers, but still no OS is seen for repair. I loaded the chipset as well, still no go. I am currently thinking of installing the server again as an overly install, then re-installing Exchange, if I need to. I presume that I'll need to use the DR switch to do so. We've been using the Microsoft built in backup, and the last time I tested and restored a couple of test files, it looks like the backup is good, but I will copy the store and logs to another drive, so I have them. Other than Exchange, there is nothing of importance on the primary drive. [MALWARE FREE]RE: Letter from Sunbelt CEO: GFI Acquires Sunbelt Software
Alex, Do you need someone to manage the Fiji office? I am going on 22 years in this business and am looking for a change!!!. I am not saying I am old but my first hard drive was a 5 MB Seagate and back then 640 KB of RAM was more than anyone will ever need and Bill Gates was still riding a bicycle to work. You either grow or die in this business so congratulations and I am glad that the Sunbelt people will still be there. I have worked with GFI in the past but as a small reseller Sunbelt has always treated me as if I sold a million dollars of product a month. I sell Vipre because I believe it is a great product but I truly appreciate the personal service. I can be packed and ready to go in 24 hours. Chris Chris Knieriem Potomac Computer Care 920 National Highway Cumberland, MD 21502 301-777-3914 cknier...@pccareonline.com From: Alex Eckelberry [mailto:al...@sunbelt-software.com] Sent: Wednesday, July 14, 2010 3:58 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: [MALWARE FREE]RE: Letter from Sunbelt CEO: GFI Acquires Sunbelt Software Like Stu said, we needed to do this. Three big reasons: a) access to capital and resources, b) technology and c) new markets. Running Sunbelt was like holding a tiger by the tail -- the growth was phenomenal, but the stress on the business is sometimes very intense. Remember a few months back when our support went to hell because our antiquated phone system couldn't handle the load? That was all related to not enough investment in our the right phone system. Little things like this cause constant headaches. I needed the find a partner with deep pockets -- and GFI has very deep pockets. I could have gone with a venture capitalist, but there is a whole lot of other risk that comes with that... And the first thing they did coming in here was start the process of buying a new phone system. I like that. On the technology side, you don't sit still in this business and last long. VIPRE is top of class, but there is a lot to be done, still. I need better integration with MSP platforms, DLP technology, integrated patch and vulnerability assessment -- and much more. GFI already has a lot of these technologies. Another example is our mail strategy. Many people are moving to a SaaS model for email security. I was being left out of the party, but now GFI has their own SaaS platform. Their access to new markets is also a major part of the transaction. 95% of our sales were in North America. That's not sustainable, as we needed to move into international markets to sustain and grow the business. Over 50% of GFI's sales are international, and that's a big pickup for us. Finally, the issue of culture: GFI's culture is very similar to ours. While they have certainly had their issues in the past, the current CEO, Walter Scott, has the same attitudes that I have about customer support, product quality and taking care of the customer. I have been very impressed with how they run this business (and it's certainly a world different than what it was 2 years ago, before Scott and the new management team came in). For our employees, it's a good thing. Out of 240 employees, there were only a handful of redundant positions (less than 10). The vast majority of employees are here and continuing with the new organization. The Tampa Bay location is going to be growing into an even larger operation. Stu is retiring, but as he'll tell you, he had already moved on prior to the acquisition to focusing on writing his newsletters and had turned the majority of his tasks over. This gives him the opportunity to focus on what he really enjoys -- writing and interacting with fellow admins. He now gets to write full time and will still happily kill any thread he doesn't like on the forum. He's happy, I can tell you :-) We had a number of suitors but chose GFI because we felt they would respect the technology, our support and our culture. And all of the key Sunbelt executives are still here, myself included. I am running the security business for GFI. I expect things will get better, not worse. [MALWARE FREE]RE: Is an internal open relay allowed?
Hello, Could you have the users setup their email client at home to authenticate to the email server so that they can send their outgoing email from the Exchange server. Are they using Outlook from home? Even if they are not using Outlook I would think that you could find a mail client that would use POP3/SMTP and allow the user to authenticate with the Exchange server in order to send mail. Of course the mail would be sent using the domain of the Exchange server and this assumes that they have a domain and Exchange account. As far as a policy is concerned an open relay is never a good idea and your server will just end up on a blacklist if the server remains open for relay. That point should be enough of a reason to justify closing the open relay. [MALWARE FREE]Error #5.1.1
Hello, I have a client running Exchange Server 2003 and Outlook 2003 who just added a new user with a new email account in Exchange. The client computer is setup to access email via POP3 because this user will be on the road 100% of the time and the administrator does not want to use RPC Over HTTP because of previous issues with it and Exchange 2003. Currently this computer is attached to the corporate network via Ethernet cable while it is being configured and Outlook is configured to use POP3 only. Because of delivery issues he has deleted and recreated the user account and is experiencing the following problem: Email sent to the recipient from outside of the organization to either email address works perfectly. Emails can be sent from the recipient to other Exchange organization recipients without a problem too. Emails sent from a user who is a member of the organization bounces back with a #5.1.1 error on the jsm...@domain.com address. Email sent to a second email address associated with the user john.sm...@domain.com works fine. The preferred email address format is first initial and last name @domain.com. Because the administrator created, deleted, and recreated this domain user account and email account I am wondering this could have created this issue. [MALWARE FREE]RE: Orla?
Hello, I have conducted a ½ day Outlook class for some of my corporate clients and the U.S. Marine Corps and the clients reported decreased help desk calls related to Outlook and much happier users. I include a cheat sheet that covers tasks like creating folders , group scheduling and task management. The cheat sheet covers all topics discussed in class. Orla may be a great product but the cost of the product appears to be prohibitive and I do not see a decent ROI or the extra 30 minutes a day of staff time saved. I would recommend having a trainer come in and deliver a short training program on Outlook. I think it would be much more cost effective and a better ROI as you can customize the class for the different user types such as production staff vs. executive staff. [MALWARE FREE]Outlook 2007 Asking For Password
Hello, I recently bounced a Small Business Server 2008 running Exchange Server 2007 to allow some updates to install and since then users are being asked repeatedly to enter their password for remote.anydomain.com while running Outlook 2007 while connected to the LAN. Prior to the installation of these particular updates the user was never asked to supply a password as Outlook was using domain authentication. No changes had been made to the workstations and OWA works as before from the Internet. I did notice that Outlook 2007 on a laptop configured for RPC Over HTTP when running remotely also repeatedly requests the password. Please note that Outlook 2007 on these computers will connect and function properly without entering the password. To get rid of the password request dialog box I can click on Need Password item at the bottom right corner of Outlook and the item changes to Connected To Microsoft Exchange. To get rid of the password request dialog box I can click on “Need Password” item at the bottom right corner of Outlook and the item changes to Connected To Microsoft Exchange. I am wondering if anyone else has seen this behavior recently. I do not believe that all of the updates installed were Exchange specific and were actually were updates to Server 2008. Do I just update the schema again and then installe Exchange 2010 on top of the E2K7 box? [MALWARE FREE]RE: Outlook addressbook issue with child domain DC's

What versions of Outlook, including service pack, are you using? From: Senter, John [mailto:john.sen...@etrade.com] Sent: Tuesday, January 12, 2010 2:11 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Outlook addressbook issue with child domain DC's Here is the problem: When list owners go into the addressbook in Outlook to add/remove a member, sometimes they get access denied type messages or the list does not show members. After doing some searching I came across something about Outlook using a GC from a child domain. I checked a couple of users Outlook that were having this issue and did see that for the directory connection Outlook was using a GC from our child domain. This child domain is a resource domain and does not have any users or Exchange install. If found the MS article KB319206 which would allow me to specify a specific Global Catalog server which I set on a couple of systems to force Outlook to use a GC in the user/exchange domain, and it allow the addressbook updates to work as expected. The web search I found talked about the Outlook client using a GC in a child domain that did not have the users account and Exchange installed. When the user tried to make a update that DC was not allowing the update since the user did not have write access in that child domain. Our forest is laid out where the forest root is also the primary user and exchange domain. We have a child domain that is a server resource domain. We have multiple sites with the primary domain DC's at each site and a couple of sites have a DC for the child domain. All DC's are global catalog servers, in both domains. All replication has been verified as working correctly. With all of this I am trying to figure out how to stop this from occurring. Has anyone else seen this? If so what did you do? My first thought was to step down DC's in the child domain to no longer be GC's. If they are not GC's then Outlook will not use them. Does anyone see a issue with doing this? If there is a child DC in a site, there is also going to be a DC for the parent domain so lookups should not be a issue. If I go this route the Infrastructure Master for the parent domain/forest root will be a GC, which should not be a issue in that domain since all DC's in that domain are GC's. The way I understand the Windows 2003 domain design, the infrastructure master is separate for each domain so I do not see how this could affect replication with a child domain. [MALWARE FREE]RE: [MALWARE FREE]Defragmenting servers
Hello, I use MyDefrag on my servers and workstations. It works well, is free, scriptable, and is based on Microsoft's API's and can be customized to function on most server types. Information can be found at www.mydefrag.com. [MALWARE FREE]Hosted Exchange, Etc.
Hello, I was wondering what the current thinking is of those of us that support Exchange servers regarding hosted Exchange vs. Exchange in-house. With all the hype out there pushing cloud computing and all of the benefits I am not yet sold on it from a security and reliability standpoint. Some of my concerns are based upon the stability of the hosting company, access to data should a hosted client decide to bring the application in-house, and cloud reliability. Even though the Internet is reliable I can remember a number of years ago when a fire in a tunnel in Baltimore brought down Internet service for a large number of users and many others suffered dialup speeds for 3-5 days until the fiber was replaced. At that time one would not think that there would be a single point of failure that would wreck havoc as did occur. I would like to ask for your thoughts on this subject. Is the Internet robust and reliable enough to put your messaging server on a remote hosting platform? What about other business critical applications? Exchange Server 2007 and Server 2008 R2
Exchange 2007 is not compatible with Microsoft Server 2008 R2. You must wait until Exchange 2010 is released if you want to run an Exchange Server on Server 2008 R2. Paul Robichaux wrote a good article covering this. Refer to InstantDoc #102870 on the Windows IT Pro website. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who tests this. Below is an explanation from the MicrosoftExchange Team Blog: Exchange Server 2007 SP2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Since we announced the release of Exchange Server 2007 SP2, we've received a few questions about running Exchange 2007 on Windows Server 2008 R2. We wanted to provide some additional information on how we made the decision to support Exchange Server 2007 SP2 on Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2 but not Windows Server 2008 R2. This decision is not one we took lightly and was informed by customer feedback. Two primary technical points drove our decision to not support Windows Server 2008 R2. First, Windows Server 2008 R2, while an incremental OS upgrade, creates significant testing requirements for Exchange 2007. Because the Exchange 2007 SP2 engineering preceded the Windows Server 2008 R2 RTM, Exchange 2007 SP2 would have had to be delayed significantly to align testing schedules. Second, because upgrading the server OS underneath an existing Exchange server is not supported, the feedback we have received is that the primary need is to support Windows Server 2008 R2 domain controllers in an existing Exchange 2007 deployment, which we have done. In reviewing the specific work items to support Windows Server 2008 R2, we determined that while significant testing time would be required this work would only ensure the minimum level of compatibility, and it still might not allow Exchange to take advantage of new Windows 2008 R2 features. Additionally, this work would be at the expense of delivering the capabilities customers have told us they want in Exchange 2010. So, based on this reality we decided to focus on the compatibility between Exchange 2007 SP2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 domain controllers and the releasing of Exchange 2010 as close to Windows 2008 R2's release as possible. We felt that thoroughly validating the combination of Exchange 2010 on Windows Server 2008 R2 allowed us to focus on delivering great solutions which would be fully tested and would support the features of Windows Server 2008 R2. We recognize that there are some downstream impacts to this decision related to administration only installs. The technical problem for us is that an administration install of Exchange is almost identical to a full Exchange server installation. This is a hard trade-off to make, but we believe it is the right one and a good balance between serving existing customers and driving innovation. Hope that this sheds some light on the subject!
