Does anyone use or ever heard of MX-Contact by ExchangeWise? They are
located at http://www.exchangewise.com. I'd be interested in some
off-list discussions if you have.

em settings you should check the "set
as system default locale" checkbox in the "Regional Settings" control panel
applet (NT4) or use the "Set default..." button of the "Regional Options"
(Windows 2000). This may require the Windows Installation CD and you will have
to reboot your system after changing the system locale. WarrantyTHE

  Getting Started
To use Outlook 2000 Team Folders, all team members must have both Microsoft
Outlook 2000 and Microsoft Exchange Server installed. It's easy to access and
use the Outlook 2000 Team Folder Wizard by installing the Outlook 2000 Team
Folder Kit. Visit the Microsoft Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/collaboration/TFWizard.htm
  and complete the following steps.

Download the Outlook 2000 Team Folder Kit.
Install the Outlook 2000 Team Folder Kit (it will,
by default, create and install in a folder called C:\Tfkit). The Kit
includes documentation, Help files, and the Outlook 2000 Team Folder
Wizard.
Go to C:\Tfkit (or the directory where you chose
to install the Outlook 2000 Team Folders Kit) and run the Oltfwiz.exe
program. This program will install the Outlook 2000 Team Folders
    tool.
Shut down and restart the computer.
In Outlook 2000, select New on the Outlook
File menu, and then click Team Folder.
A wizard will walk you through the simple setup routine.
that LINK is bad, and the new kit doesnt
  have oltfiz.exe anyone got that?

Team Calendar Outlook Team Calendar
Application V 2.2Overview Setting Up the Team Calendar
Personalize and Configure the Team Calendar Using more than one Team
Calendar Offline Support of Team Calendar Language Support
Possible Date Issues Warranty OverviewOutlook Team Calendar
is a Personal Outlook 2000 Folder Homepage.

The idea is to have a single view of choosen Team Member appointments
as well as enable quick access to their individual calendars and their
free/busy times.

Requirements: You need to run this page from within Outlook 2000 and
you need access to Microsoft Exchange Server to use Team Calendar.

Where is the software to install from? When you read this page
you already have all the neccesary code you need ;-) Team Calendar
detects if you are viewing this page from an Outlook folder homepage or
outside Outlook i.e. in Internet Explorer. In this last case, it only shows
this help pane and hides the rest of the Team Calendar application.

Team Calendar uses your existing Outlook Objects, the Outlook View
Control, Collaboration Data Objects, Dynamic (D)HTML, Cascading Style
Sheets, Configuration Management via the Registry, all of this within this
*one* single HTML-File - named "teamcal.htm".

No
additional code is required as the Team Calendar downloads CDO and the
Outlook View Control directly from the Internet, if not already installed.
Setting Up the Team CalendarTo setup the Team Calendar do the
following: First you should save this page - teamcal.htm - somewhere
onto your harddisk, e.g. C:\My Documents\teamcal.htm. Create an outlook
subfolder anywhere you want - e.g. a subfolder of your mailbox's calendar
folder, with a name of your choice. The folder must be of type calendar -
contains appointment items - and doesn't have to be your own calendar
folder. You should use your mailbox store or a personal store for this
folder and not a public folder as this is supposed to be a personal solution
and the settings of this are all stored in your registry and not in the
folder itself. Right-click your newly created folder, choose
"Properties" and activate the "Home Page" tab. Use the "Browse..." button to
pickup this file ("teamcal.htm") from where you saved it in Step 1 and make
sure to activate the "Show home page by default for this folder" checkbox.
Use the Personalize button on the folder homepage to define your own
title message, refresh properties, filters and the days you want to look
ahead. Define your team members (which uses CDO for the addressbook
dialog - it will prompt you to install CDO if neccesary) and make sure
you've at least read access to your team member calendars. Whenever you
change your team members or filter preferences the page will refresh
automatically after saving the changes with the Save button. N.B. If you
choose to download CDO from the Microsoft Website you have to install and
register CDO manually. See the readme.txt which comes with the download for
instructions how to do this. The preferred - and easier - option is to
install CDO from your Office/Outlook 2000 setup where you can add it from
the list of available components. Personalize and Configure the Team
CalendarYou define the members of a Team Calendar with the Team Members
button to define, edit or delete your Team Members. This team definition -
as all other configuration settings - is persisted in your user registry and
is part of your user profile. N.B. Team Members are saved with both
their display name and their X.400 address as their primary lookup key.

The page can be configured to automatically refresh on load. The
Refresh button can also be used to refresh at any time you want. Every
refresh will first delete all existing appointments within the Team

Problem Solve. How many of you know about this? Sounds very interesting
almost like a SQL database.
** Microsoft Gives Glimpse Of New Exchange

Microsoft has begun to share details of updates to its Exchange
E-mail system and Outlook E-mail client, and company officials
say the releases--slated for mid-2003--will address three key
needs by improving inbox management, beefing up wireless access,
and making it possible to support more users with each Exchange
server. The release figures to be important in the history of
Exchange, with IBM's Lotus Software set to release the update to
its Notes/Domino system this fall and Oracle planning to
introduce a cheaper alternative by year's end.

The new Exchange, code-named Titanium, will let information
workers make better use of their E-mail, while driving down costs
for administrators. On the back end, Exchange will include the
ability to create a volume shadow copy, essentially a snapshot
of the Exchange database that can be taken at frequent intervals
throughout the day, preventing IT staff from having to re-create
histories or refer to backup tapes when problems occur. The
result is a quick-response capability that will let
administrators support more users from a single Exchange server,
lead product manager Chris Baker says.

Titanium also will include out-of-the-box support for wireless
E-mail access via PDAs and cell phones, which now requires the
deployment of Microsoft's mobile information server.

Users also will get an updated version of Outlook for accessing
their messages. The new client will feature a different look
designed to improve message readability, inbox organization, and
search capabilities. - Tony Kontzer

That's actually quite a tricky one.

Clustering wouldn't help, since it's shared storage. Why not upgrade to
E2k enterprise and implement multiple databases? At least your downtime
would be minimised if you split your users well. Running the database
utilities wouldn't take that much time with multiple, smaller,
databases.

I have dealt with CDW in the past. I thought they were abysmal. Very
pushy and rude. I went through 3 reps before I gave up. I am now doing
most of my purchases with Zones. www.zones.com. They are a smaller
outfit but very well run. I usually get items next day with not that
much price hike in shipping. I have been very happy with them.

Good question. I sent your question to our head sales guy, and here's
what he had to say:

Our experience with customers that have worked with CDW indicates there
is little or no product knowledge within CDW sales. They sell products
based on price only. They don't understand integration with other
products, offer no support, tend to allow subscriptions to expire
without notifying their customers and most importantly don't understand
product requirements. Leading to incomplete or incorrect orders.

VARs like FishNet Security, design solutions, deliver products on-time
correctly this first time, offer migration, implementation and
integration services, and provide support and training.

Heard enough sales crap yet?! :)

I have to ask this, and please don't take it the wrong way - I'm asking
this purely out of curiosity. I purchased my Trend product through CDW a
few years back, and we get very good pricing through Trend. We also get
very, very good support through Trend itself. Could I ask what VAR's

Hi,

We are currently looking for a Contact Management system for our Sales
Department that can interface directly with Exchange (5.5) and Outlook.
We have a small number of remote users that need to dial in over a phone
line and access the system. So far we have only trialled GoldMine but
had many issues with the product, mainly the fact that it does not run
as a service.

Does anyone have any recommendations or experience with any other
Contact Management products ?

Many thanks for your time.

Subject: Trend Tech Support AKA I Love It.

Well I just had my first support issue with Trend OfficeScan. I had one
computer that it would not install right on one machine. Looking through
their knowledge base I found a solution that seems to fit the bill
exactly, except it was for a slightly older version than I have. At 4:58
PM Wednesday I sent off a message to their email support team asking if
this would work for my version, figuring I might get something Monday
because of the holiday weekend.

Much to my surprise there was a reply waiting for me this morning. The
person not only answered my question but also made several other
suggestions, one of which ended up fixing the problem.

What great service I thought and then I looked and realized that this
message was sent at 3:23 AM July 4th! Plus I didn't have to sign up and
pay money to be supported like Mcafee. With McAfee I was lucky to get an
answer by the end of a normal working week, even though I was paying
support.

Just another reason to go with Trend.

I remember a product from a few years ago that would take all incoming
attachments on Exchange and strip them from the mail, then store them
elsewhere while still making them available to the user as if they were
in the DB. I can't find it now. Does anyone remember this tool?
MailEssentials will strip them, but I don't think it allows the user to
retrieve them as if they are still in the DB.

It's only marked with a red X once the Cleanup Agent has run against the
store. You can manually force the Cleanup Agent by right-clicking the
Mailboxes object under the store and choosing the Run Cleanup Agent
option.

Conversation: Do not permanently delete option
Subject: Do not permanently delete option

We ran into an interesting problem the other day and I'm wondering how
others have configured their E2k (sp2) option of Do not permanently
delete mailboxes and items until the store has been backed up. I'm
thinking of unchecking the box but am wondering what the repercussions
are.

We currently have set 21 days on deleted items, 30 days on deleted
mailboxes, Box is checked for do not permanently delete..., and we
have limits on all mailboxes currently ranging from 20 to 100MB.

The problem we had was that after a personnel shuffle (several account
renames), after a few days the final leftover user account was deleted
by the account operator, including home directory, roaming profile, and
E2k mailbox. Within a few hours the department who'd had that user
previously called up and said we have a temporary person here and would
like them to have access to the previous person's files and mailbox.
Account operator comes to me :)

So, we decided in this case we could create a new user account, restore
the files, and reset permissions. But, I went to reconnect the E2k
mailbox and although it was on the list, it did not have a red X and I
did not have the option to reconnect. It had been several hours since
the user deletion, but I went ahead and synchronized our DCs and updated
RUS. Even after another hour there were no changes. I guessed that it
was not being permanently deleted because the backup hadn't occurred
yet. Sure enough, the next day I had the reconnect option available.

I checked the MS support site, but couldn't find this as a known
issue--anyone have a link? How do others have this option configured? I
think with our other retentions we would be safe to turn this off. And,
what safety net does this really give me if I can't recover before the
backup?

Thanks,

Actually no you don't, only time you need to turn it off is if you need
to authenticate outside clients to your smtp.

The Cisco PIX will do the same thing. You have to turn off the fixup
protocol on the PIX to work with Exchange.

It very well might, if the device in question also proxies the SMTP (or
especially the ESMTP) conversation, like a Watchguard firewall does.

I've had an issue with a Watchguard firewall that really took a lot of
my time until I figured it out, because of their SMTP proxy.

Subject: evil pst dilemma

I have a user with a 1.8 GB pst file, Personal Folders, he moves all
items from the server to his workstation(because I finally stuck to the
limits for all users in Exchange, 100MB mailboxes), gets backed up once
a week. I have already had to break into the pst because he forgot the
password. Now, a strange situation, he was in the middle of moving a
file to a Personal Folder when the power to the building went down, a
brown out, including his workstation, rebooted. Servers fine, UPS. So,
once booted back up the Outlook client locks or won't complete a move,
copy, anything all the way through in his Personal Folders that he was
working with. I am attempting to play with the pst file on a separate
PC so as not to mess with what's on his system. I was successful in
copying the file to another workstation, but can't open it Personal
Folder in his account, it prompts me for a password. Do I need to try
to break into the folder again, or is it possibly that I'm logged into
the machine as Administrator, and his mailbox as his username. Do I
need to log on as him?

My understanding is... if it ONLY went offline (IOW, no DR needed to be
done), then it'll resync. If ANY DR work was done, then it'll still
Re-synch, but the server contents will take priority.

He could, lacking a good DR procedure at Corporate, export the OSTs to
PST PRIOR to bringing the server back online, then re-import messages
depending on whether anything's missing.

OSTs, apparently, can become corrupt, just like PSTs. SO... it should
work, but let's not assume it will :) No reason to let Corporate off
the hook for shoddy backup/restore procedures.

Your problem is not with Outlook or on the desktop. Your issues are your
DR procedures for Exchange. You need to look at and evaluate your DR
procedures and find out what went wrong. At the worst, you should have
been able to get everything back from the last backup.

OK, first I have to say that I'm not an exchange expert. I'm not the
exchange admin for our company so I am quite the newbie here. Here's the
story: Last week our one and only exchange server crashed and we were
without email for most of the week. All clients were setup to look at
the server for email, no local pst files. So, when the server went down,
all inbox, sent items, calendar, contacts, etc were gone. The admin at
corporate, in another state, rebuilt the server (I think) but was not
able to restore every one's mail back to pre-crash status. We were
missing attachments, some email... When my remote users dialed in to get
new mail, they synced with a nearly empty server and poof, no more
old/saved mail. We were able to restore most of our saved mail but there
is a lot gone and we accept that. What I would like to learn is how can
I set up our Outlook clients so that if our email server crashes again,
we don't lose all of our saved mail and related stuff. Most Outlook
clients are Outllok 2000 with some XP sprinkled in for good measure.

  Chris,

Don't use the firewall client on the Exchange Server. The default
firewall client settings disable connections from the inetinfo.exe process,
which includes (among other things)the Exchange SMTP Virtual Server.
This will causeSMTP to work via telnet, but not through Exchange. Make
  the Exchange Servera SecureNAT client.

  You
might be able to get around this by changing the Firewall Client settings in
ISA Management, but I'd recommend against it.Just use SecureNAT (i.e.,
set the default gateway of the Exchange server to the IP of the ISA Firewall).
I just finished getting this same scenario working this week (after
  encountered the same problem).

  Regards,
  Nathanael Klassen

no
they aren't blocking the port because we can go into cmd, and run "telnet
mail.domain.com 25" and it connects

ISA is
setup to allow all IP out

how
can DNS be broken, when if we do a "telnet mail.domain.com 25" it resolves it to
an IP?

More

Guessing as we
really do need more Info. From
your description I will assume the following:
The attachment is
an imbedded OLE object like a picture or spreadsheet and not a
file.
The reply address
is sending as RTF which would include the
object.
When sending, the
address is listed as basic text or Outlook decide and Outlook chooses basic
text.

Now, if she is
attaching an actual file from the attach file option ... I am stumped.

I did see this once, on our only XP box, and it was a permissions
problem. The person was a user on the box. When I made her a power user,
everything worked ok. You may want to try that, to see if it's the same
thing.

If it is the same user permissions problem, I think the thing that
ended up solving it was giving the person modify privileges to the
winnt\forms directory, and everything in it. Don't know for sure if this
will solve yours, but it couldn't hurt.
