Nah, we got bought out by another company that uses Notes. Don't get

nightmare to use/deploy/manage!!
Anyway, thanks for your suggestions - I was able to empty out Calendar
but Notes Migration tool blows up nevertheless..

Lost Custom Recipient

2002-05-03 Thread Dimitri Limanovski

Created Custom Recipient to forward all mail to that address. Gave it a
standard name (Auto Forward for user_id), filled in all user info and
clicked OK.
Now for the life of me I cannot find it. Not in Hidden Recipients, not in
Recipients, nowhere! I first thought that I accidentally hit Esc instead of
Enter, but when I try to re-create it, I get an error that "The email
already exists in this organization".
Does anybody know what's going on?
Thanks!

RE: Multiple Domains in Exchange 2000

2002-04-11 Thread Dimitri Limanovski

I thought you'd still have to add additional email to every user's SMTP
address for rerouted domain: ie, route all @abc.com to @xyz.com so I'd have
to add additional SMTP address for [EMAIL PROTECTED] to already existing
[EMAIL PROTECTED] SMTP address..
Unless you forward everything over to sendmail box and setup aliases on it..

That was easy. In Exchange admin, Connections, IMS, on the routing tab I
enabled "Reroute incoming SMTP mail...". Then by pressing "Add" I
entered the domain, and chose the option "Should be rerouted to this
domain" and entered the primary domain that I use for all email. I had
about thirty domains on one server all routing this way.
This works for inbound only.
I found it very useful as we kept acquiring domains and I was able to
ensure to management that the domains would work for inbound. If a
certain user needed to send email with a different domain from the
primary (different project or division) I could change it manually.
If I could do this for Exchange 2000 without having to enter individual
addresses to each user for each domain then I would be very happy.
Hope this helps,
Simon.

Hello,
In Exchange 5.5 I could have one domain mapped to another, so
@domaina.com would automatically go to @domainb.com,
without having to add the second domain to everyone's SMTP email
address. Very useful when the company wanted all of their domains to
work for inbound email and also meant I didn't have to modify every
account each time a new one was bought. However despite lots of research
I can't seem to find that feature on Exchange 2000. Am I missing
something obvious? Thanks, Simon Butler.

Just curious-- how often do people reboot their exchange servers? Or do
you? Our exchange server has been up for 7 months straight now w/o a
reboot. I am wondering if it would be a good idea to reboot it every now
and then-- free up any memory leakages, etc.. Is it necessary, or can I
let it just keep chugging away until it is necessary? Any input,
thoughts, etc. would be great. Thanks.

Definitely sounds NOS related to me. Try re-applying SPx for your NOS

Why not just open 443 (HTTP over SSL) right through and put the OWA server

Just my opinion, of course.

In other words, if user's email is [EMAIL PROTECTED], I need to add additional

I already have MX entry taken care of and routing configured to accept
inbound mail for new.domain.com.

doing Directory Export, manual update and Import.
The only problem - I can't seem to find what exactly to update in the

already existing "SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]" in "E-mail Address" column but when
I try to import it back in, I get an error stating that event has been
logged in Application Log in Event Viewer. But of course, there's nothing

I also checked Q155594 which does this differently, by creating custom

Can anyone help me out with this one?
Thanks in advance!

Aut. Repl. and Altern. Recip. Don't Work Together.

2002-02-15 Thread Dimitri Limanovski

Sorry for cryptic subject but Lyris has rejected my message 4 times because
of the reserved subject lines..

Really weird problem this time:
In the process of migration to Lotus Notes I need to forward messages from
our Exchange server to the Notes server and auto-reply to the sender with
generic message saying that user email address has changed.
I do it "per-user" basis so to forward mail for every user I created
appropriate alternate recipient with their new Notes email address. I also
select "Deliver Messages to both Recipient and Alternate Recipient".
Auto-replies are also done on "per-user" basis so I login to user mailbox
via Outlook and create a new rule, as described in Q291956
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-AU;q291956).
The problem is that if I have auto-forward via alternate recipient on,
auto-reply rules don't work. Mail gets forwarded to alternate recipient OK
but sender doesn't get an auto-reply message. If I disable auto-forward,
auto-reply works just fine.
Another weird part is even though I have "Deliver Messages to both Recipient
and Alternate Recipient" selected, messages are not being copied to the
local Exchange mailbox while being forwarded to alternate recipient!
Has anyone seen anything like this before? I'm at the point where I'm
planning to re-apply Sp4 and all the hot fixes again!

Dimitri
P.S. Server: Exchange5.5 SP4 + hot fixes; client: Win2K SP2, Office2K SR2 +
hot fixes.
FWIW, there's nothing else wrong with the server - it's been working
perfectly fine for the past 3 years.

Auto-Forward to Alternative Recipient Not working

2002-02-08 Thread Dimitri Limanovski

Well, not 100%.
I have a bunch of users that have email accounts on our systems but all
their mail is being automatically forwarded to their other Internet
accounts.
I have their Internet accounts setup as "Alternate Recipient" and "Deliver
messages both to recipient and alternate recipient" is NOT SELECTED so all
messages that come into that mailbox get automatically forwarded to the
Internet address specified in "Alternate Recipient" field and nothing gets
accumulated in the Inbox.
Well, messages do get forwarded without any problems but copies of these
messages are still sitting in the Inbox. I can't figure out why..
Unchecking "Deliver messages both to recipient and alternate recipient" is
the right thing to do when I only want the "Alternate Recipient" to get mail
and not the local mailbox, right? Am I missing something?

Thanks!

P.S. Exchange5.5 SP4 + all hot fixes on WinNT4 SP6a + all hot fixes; OWA on
the separate server, if it makes any difference.

RE: Migration from lotus notes

Martin,
Thanks for your reply! Quitting was the first thing that ran through my mind
however I simply can't afford it with current market situation.
Your scenario is exactly what I've had in mind and probably will have to
implement, unless someone knows of a better way.
Read access to Exchange with mail forwarding from old Exchange email
addresses to new Notes ones.
Lotus Notes, here I come!

P.S. Anyone knows of a good Notes mailing list? My only experience with
Lotus software was cc:Mail couple of jobs ago and I cried of happiness when
I got the hell out.

Ah, I've been that direction too. My company had a short phase of
temporary insanity (brought on by listening to the Gartner Group too
much) and got part way into migrating from Exchange to Notes. Then came
the revolution (really!).

As you might expect, there are very few tools for migrating from
Exchange to Notes. It's just not a direction reasonable people would
choose to go, so that's no surprise. Of the few products that there are,
only one works to the point of being useful, though it's still FAR from
perfect. That was the product from Binary Tree (www.binarytree.com).
It's almost a year since I used it, but at that point, it was still
riddled with bugs and unbelievably slow. However, at least it moved the
mailboxes across at least mainly intact and at least most of the time,
which the other products didn't seem capable of.

If I was put in a similar position again, the first thing I'd do is
quit. Seriously. However, if you don't want to do that, I would very
seriously recommend that you make no attempt to migrate user data. It
just isn't worth the time and money and hassle, not just to you, but
also to your users. Leave their Exchange data where it is, leave then
with read access to it for reference, and start fresh with empty Notes
mailboxes. Yes, they'll hate you for it, but then... they're going to
hate you anyway for the migration, so what difference does it make?

Title: 13 December 2001 Cumulative Patch for IE
Date: 13 December 2001
Software: Internet Explorer
Impact: Run Code of an Attacker's Choice
Max Risk: Critical
Bulletin: MS01-058

Microsoft encourages customers to review the Security Bulletin at:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-058.asp.
- --

Issue:
==
This is a cumulative patch that, when installed, eliminates all
previously discussed security vulnerabilities affecting IE 5.5 and
IE 6. In addition, it eliminates three newly discovered
vulnerabilities.

 - The first vulnerability involves a flaw in the handling of the
Content-Disposition and Content-Type header fields in an HTML.
stream. These fields, the hosting URL, and the hosted file data
determine how a file is handled upon download in Internet
Explorer. A security vulnerability exists because, if an
attacker altered the HTML header information in a certain way,
it could be possible to make IE believe that an executable file
was actually a different type of file -- one that it is
appropriate to simply open without asking the user for
confirmation. This could enable the attacker to create a web
page or HTML mail that, when opened, would automatically run an
executable on the user's system. This vulnerability affects
IE 6.0 only. It does not affect IE 5.5.

 - The second vulnerability is a newly discovered variant of the
"Frame Domain Verification" vulnerability discussed in Microsoft
Security Bulletin MS01-015. The vulnerability could enable a
malicious web site operator to open two browser windows, one in
the web site's domain and the other on the user's local file
system, and to pass information from the latter to the former.
This could enable the web site operator to read, but not change,
any file on the user's local computer that could be opened in a
browser window. This vulnerabilty affects both IE 5.5 and 6.0.

 - The third vulnerability involves a flaw related to the display
of file names in the File Download dialogue box. When a file
download is initiated, a dialogue provides the name of the file.
However, in some cases, it would be possible for an attacker to
misrepresent the name of the file in the dialogue. This could be
invoked from a web page or in an HTML email in an attempt to
fool users into accepting unsafe file types from a trusted
source. This vulnerabilty affects both IE 5.5 and 6.0.

Mitigating Factors:

File Execution Vulnerability:

 - The vulnerability could not be exploited if File Downloads have
been disabled in the Security Zone from which the file is being
received. In most attempts to maliciously exploit this
vulnerability the file would be received from the Internet or
Intranet zone. Therefore, disabling File Downloads in these zones
can protect customers. This is not the default setting for either
   of these zone, however.

 - This affects IE 6.0 only.

Frame Domain Verification Variant:
 - The vulnerability could only be used to view files. It could not
be used to create, delete, modify or execute them.

 - The vulnerability would only allow an attacker to read files that
can be can be opened in a browser window, such as image files,
HTML files and text files. Other file file types, such as binary
files, executable files, Word documents, and so forth, could not
   be read.

 - The attacker would have to have knowledge of the exact file name
and location in other to successfully read the file on the
   local system.

File Name Spoofing Vulnerability:
 - The determination on choosing to accept a file download from an
Internet site should always be based on the trustworthiness of
the source and not on the file type. File downloads should never
be accepted from an untrusted source, no matter how harmless the
   type may appear to be.

Risk Rating:

 - Internet systems: Critical
 - Intranet systems: Critical
 - Client systems: Critical

Potential issue with this security patch. Running NT 4.0 SP6a and Exchange
5.5 SP4.

Issue is with an older version of IE on the exchange server. We were running
IE 4.01 SP1. The patch applies fine but upon reboot there is an error
message

"procedure entry point wnsprintfa could not be located in the
dynamic link library shlwapi.dll"

See MS knowledgebase Q284706

The error manifests itself with OWA (outlook Web Access) users not seeing
any text of their emails. They can logon fine and see the subject lines -
but clicking on the message brings up a white page.

Resolved (with help from MS tech support) by backing off the patch,
installing IE 5.5 SP2 and re-installing the patch. This takes several
reboots.

Peter Koso

I receive no undeliverable message. if I send to any other email address
that is wrong I get a bounce back. if I send to a yahoo account that does

Issue:

Outlook Web Access (OWA) is a service of Exchange 5.5 Server that
allows users to access and manipulate messages in their Exchange
mailbox by using a web browser.

A flaw exists in the way OWA handles inline script in messages in
conjunction with Internet Explorer (IE). If an HTML message that
contains specially formatted script is opened in OWA, the script
executes when the message is opened. Because OWA requires that
scripting be enabled in the zone where the OWA server is located,
a vulnerability results because this script could take any action
against the user's Exchange mailbox that the user himself was
capable of, including sending, moving, or deleting messages. An
attacker could maliciously exploit this flaw by sending a
specially crafted message to the user. If the user opened the
message in OWA, the script would then execute.

While it is possible for a script to send a message as the user,
it is impossible for the script to send a message to addresses in
the user's address book. Thus, the flaw cannot be exploited for
mass-mailing attacks. Also, mounting a successful attack requires
knowledge of the intended victim's choice of mail clients and
reading habits. If the maliciously crafted message were read in
any mail client other than a browser through OWA, the attack
would fail.

Mitigating Factors:

 - A successful attack would require the victim to read the message
in a IE using OWA only. The attack would fail if read in any
   other mail client.
 - A successful attack would also require knowledge of the version
of OWA in use. The attack would fail on other versions of OWA.
 - A successful attack can only take action on the mailbox on the
Exchange Server as the user. It cannot take action on the user's
local machine. It cannot take actions on any other users mailbox
directly. Nor can it take actions directly on the Exchange Server.

Risk Rating:

 - Internet systems: Moderate
 - Intranet systems: Moderate
 - Client systems: None

RE: Blocking attachments: Know Viruses

2001-12-06 Thread Dimitri Limanovski

True but I don't think GroupSUCKS will let you specify to block everything
(*.*) and then specifically allow certain files that you need.
This is what William was talking about (and probably has implemented in his
Exchange paradise) and I like the idea very much myself..
Another point to Antigen..

Yes, Antigen allows you to block filename or *.extension. However,
Groupshield will allow you to block filename and extension - but it requires
service patch 7 obtainable from their prime support.

Speaking of blocking *.*, does Antigen allow you to do this?
In GroupSUCKS you can specify which attachment types to block but not vice

RE: *** Warning *** New Virus - W32.goner.a@mm

2001-12-04 Thread Dimitri Limanovski

You need to get the 4174 DATs to catch it and of course McAfee FTP servers
are hammered!
Use ftp:/ftpeur.nai.com and manually download the sdat-4174.zip. You will
then have to manually apply it to your Exchange server, witch is major PITA
by itself.
See in FAQs on www.mcafeeb2b.com for "Why are all attachments being
blocked?" question on instructions how to do it.
Feel free to email me with any questions.

Groupsuck REALLY sucks...

Even though I already had the latest dat installed, and all my services are
running, two instances of this virus made it through. Thankfully I don't
trust GS, and I sent out a warning and my users actually read it, and acted
on it.

Any idea why GS might not be catching them? Everything looks like it's set
up properly. I caught all the Badtrans viruses last week.

I am so PISSED OFF!!
Our POS GroupShield after an update to 4172 DATs simply lost "SCR" from the
list of blocked extensions!!!
WTF?!?! And of course some dumb-ass user got an email infected with
W32/Goner and opened it!
I got it under control now by adding SCR back in and initiating full IS
scan.. So far only one infected message that was succesfully cleaned..
But still, WTF is up with GroupShield?! I am moving to Antigen, that's for
sure.

Sorry for this rant

Ole -

The same thing is happening to me and to another admin that I spoke to
earlier today. BadTrans is getting through Webshield despite a block on the
attachment types (.pif and .scr) and the current (4172 and 4173) dat file
(though I'm using the older 4140 engine). The other admin I spoke to
suggested that hotfix 10 for Webshield may help as it scans the headers as
well as the message body. But I'm letting someone else try this first since,
as you mentioned, GroupShield is removing the attachments when they hit the
store...so far.

So what is the
best practice with defragmentation?
MS says that

eseutil.  I run it because that is the ONLY way to regain space in the
Exchange DB that has been freed up by messages being deleted etc.  If I
did not do this on a regular basis I would hit the Exchange 5.5 IS
  limit.

  I
would guess that it would be /t f:/tempedb.edb   or what ever you
plan to use for the defrag.  It may not work, it doesn't work in 5.5 when
you try to redirect the temp database, it must run on the same physical drive
  that it is stored.

  Good
  luck.
  Sherry

Why do you need to defrag the IS? Has MS told you to do
this?
eseutil is a tool that if you are not familiar with, you shouldn't be
using. Now tell us why you want to do it.

Routing and Relaying

2001-10-22 Thread Dimitri Limanovski

We currently have O'Reilly's WebBoard server in house that needs to send
(relay) mail out to external users that subscribed to the service.
Currently, I have our Exchange5.5 SP4 set to allow relaying for "Host and
clients that successfully authenticate" to prevent relaying but allow our
dumbass sales force to get their mail the way they're accustomed to.
Now, there's another setting there - "Host and clients with these IP
addresses" - where I thought I could simply put an IP address of the
WebBoard server and Exchange would allow it to relay through.. But it looks
like BOTH conditions must be met in order for this to work, i.e. client
should have valid (allowed) IP address AND authenticate successfully in
order to relay.
Unfortunately, WebBoard doesn't have any authentication mechanism in place,
like Outlook/Express does so I'm pretty much stuck here..
Is there any other way to trick Exchange to allow relaying from specified
IP? Is there a workaround I could use?
TIA for any help!

Regards,
Dimitri

RE: Groupshield

Title: Message

I have a copy
of the hot fix, applied it couple of months ago. Worked fine, I no longer need
to worry about #2, 3 and 11.
I can email it if
anybody's interested. Zipped version is over 3Mb so make sure your message size
limit is set accordingly.
I hear all-new,
latest-the-greatest GroupShield 5 is going to be out soon but I'm not
looking forward to find out if it's any good - my next anti-virus is
ANTIGEN!

  Already
contacted Trend and notified my customers to expect the move. NAI has been
miserable in supporting this since 4.5 was
  introduced.

  Miserable

  I got
the hotfix, with pretty much no screaming necessary.  I asked the tech
why they wont post it, and they said it would break more than it would
fix.  How about that for a product...

  Should
we be looking at something else than NAI?

  Just 1
or 2 things. I'm going to try to call today. If anybody has the fix, would be
nice to get it rather than call and convince them
  otherwise.

Ports

2001-08-30 Thread Dimitri Limanovski

Is there a pre-defined list of ports that need to be open for Outlook (or
any other MAPI client) to connect to Exchange server?
I tried searching the TechNet for "Outlook ports" but didn't get much info
back.
TIA,

Dimitri

Custom OWA Login Page

2001-08-17 Thread Dimitri Limanovski

I know it's been here before and I even had one especially nice site
bookmarked but can't find it now..
And archives are not accessible for some reason via the link on the bottom..
Does anybody have a custom-made OWA login screen? If yes, could I take a
peek?
Mucho Gracias!
