RE: DMZ, OWA and Exchange 5.5 questions

2002-01-14 Thread Eric Mailloux

Patrick,

It sure can be done. But you will have to open a lot of port on
your firewall. And you know what this means : NOT SAFE!!!

Better off with OWA using SSL. The OWA server being inside the
network. You just redirect the HTTPS connexions fron the firewall to the
OWA server.

greetings

Has anyone set up OWA in a DMZ, where the server that OWA resides on is
not
part of the domain on the internal network? Is this possible? We're
using
NT 4 with Exchange 5.5, latest sp for those versions.

We're in the process of scoping out whether this can be done and have
been
looking through technet, Slipstick, Swynk and a few other sites but
haven't
really found the answer.

tia for any input or guidance.

Mass printing e-mails

2002-01-07 Thread Eric Mailloux

Hello!

One of my bosses asked for a stupid request : print (almost) all the
emails of our ex-president. They are taking him to court!!! Nice
touch!

So... Is there a way to print more then one email at the timewhile also
printingthe associated attachments? Because,if I have to print all
those emails, I willstill be here nextyear printing...Our
ex-prez used Outlook Express. I have all the emails in front of me in OExpress.
I've printed some of them, but I can't seem to print more then one at a
time.

By the way, selecting more then one email and trying to print them all at
once doesn't work.

 Any idea???

RE: Setting up Exchange 2000... Head spinning...Feeling stupid

2002-01-03 Thread Eric Mailloux

Well... Let me try this.

If E2K was installed on a member server, you will have to
install the W2K admin pack on the member server if you want to manage
your users from the E2K server. On the other hand, if you want to manage
your users from the PDC, you have to install the E2K admin tools.

* Admin.msi (or adminpk.msi) : on the W2K CD
* E2K admin tools : on the E2K server CD (or E2K Resource Kit
CD). If I remember correctly, the E2K Resource Kit is downloadable.

I have a small Win2k test domain going with 1 DC and I am setting up
Exchange on a separate member server. I ran forestprep and domainprep
then
installed exchange. When I go into Active Directory Users and Computers,
the
existing user accounts don't have any Exchange information. When I
create a

I've been checking out Amazon.com for a decent starter book. Anyone have

RE: FE-BE Server Setup (Exchange 2k)

2001-12-13 Thread Eric Mailloux

Keith,

I have this kind of setup here. And what I can say to you is
this: disable ALL unnecessary services on the FE server. This includes
the Information store. I also disabled POP3, IMAP4. After stopping and
disabling the IStore service on the FE, I deleted the mailbox store and
the public store on the FE.

Works nicely. With HTTPS of the FE, of course.

Hello everyone,

Okay, I'm in the process of rolling out a new, more secure, firewall

Exchange 2k. So far its going well but I just want to confirm if I need
to have an Information Store on the FE server to relay SMTP in and out

slightly and I would just like to get some clarification from someone

Exchange FE-BE troubleshooting connection problems

2001-11-26 Thread Eric Mailloux

Hello,

I have read MS' doc on how to install a FE server. I also read MS'
doc on planning the FE server. Well, it is not working very well for
me!!! And think the problem is with AD. Here are some details :

* Server 1 : PDC and runs the BE server. The server is also the GC
server and primary DNS server.
* Server 2 : member server and (supposed) to run the FE server. It
also runs as secondary DNS server.
* All this is running on a test (development) network.

I followed these steps :
* Installed W2K and SP2 on Server 1
* Ran ForestPrep and DomainPrep on Server 1
* I installed E2K the Server 1
* Installed W2K and SP2 on Server 2. Did not run ForestPrep or
DomainPrep, though. Should I ???
* Installed E2K on Server 2. The installation goes allright
* I can see Server 1 in AD under Domain Comtrollers and Server 2
Computers. When I run Exchange System Manger, I can see both servers.
DNS works great.
* I then configured Server 2 to be a FE Server by checking the
appropriate option
* I Restarted Server 2
* Then, I get the following erros on Server 2 :

(In the app log)

I looked up in the MS Knowledge Base, but no use. Nothing seems to
fix the problem.

So... Any clues??? Is there an specific order I should follow when
installing? Should I run ForestPrep and DomainPrep on the BE and FE? Can
the FE server be a server member? Does the FE server need to be a PDC in
a child domain? Or a second PDC in the same domain?

RE: Analysing log files in MDBDATA

2001-10-22 Thread Eric Mailloux

The
last backup was done friday @ 6:00PM. I use Veritas Bakup Exec w/ Exchange
Agent. It is configured to commit then flush the log files.

So
right now, I don't know what is going on.

BTW,
what do they contain exactly??? (might seem dumb, but what the
heck)

When
was your last exchange aware backup performed? Transactions in these log files
get committed, then flushed during a normal backup using an Exchange aware
backup product.

  Hello,

Is there a tool, in E2K, I could use to visualize and analyzethe
  log files in MDBDATA?

The number of log files (in MDBDATA) is growing MUCH to fast for my
taste. No one was here during the week-end but nevertheless, the number of log
files are HUGE.What could be explaining this abnormal log file growth???

RE: Analysing log files in MDBDATA

2001-10-22 Thread Eric Mailloux

Well...

I HAVE an anti-virus program that scans the *DATA. That's
probably the reason. But... how can so much log files be created during
the week-end, where nobody is using email? I know the server receives
email during the week-end, but there are only 20 user accounts on this
server. I check the MDBDATA directory and there is roughly 1 log file
(5.0MB) created every minute. This seems to be going on since sunday.

Finally what about the analysis tool? Is there a tool that i can
use to view those log files? If so, what is it and where can I find it.

Thanks

Another reason for huge growth (That's if you ARE doing an Exchange
Aware
ONLINE Backup) is the use of any Anti-Virus programs scanning your
Exchange
*DATA Folders, or the M: Drive.
Verify that nothing is taking place in their areas, and perform an
online
backup ASAP, before you run out of disk space. Using NTBACKUP on the
Exchange Server will flush the logs, as it is Exchange-aware.

If this happens, the Services will stop!

RE: Any comments to Microsofts new license for Exchange 2000 regarding the OWA as a front end server?

2001-10-18 Thread Eric Mailloux

Hmmm...

Are you running it in a Front-end/Back-end (FE/BE) architecture?
If so, you have to tell me how you did it... Of course, you can run E2K
and OWA without a FE/BE architecture, but if you want to do so, you need
E2K Enterprise Ed.. No?

Huh? Unless I'm missing something, we've got Std edition of 2000 and
running OWA just fine.

Can't use Standard edition! The OWA (front end) functionality comes with
the enterprize version

I guess I could open up the firewall to that server or use reverse
proxying to access the server but I just don't like opening up
unnessesary holes in the firewall... That's why we have a DMZ.

There isn't any front end license, that's the problem...

Contact list

2001-10-18 Thread Eric Mailloux

Hi!

This might sound a little dumb or easy to some of you, but nevertheless.
Here it is anyway :

How do you create an address list showing ALL the contacts in a contact list? I
have a list showing all the mail-enabled contacts, butI would like to
haveALL the contacts (mail-enabled or not) appearing in the OU I created
to store all of the company's.

Can't seem to find a way to do that...

Thank
you,
