RE: domain
Title: Message That's a wide open question. Are you talking for an internal network or just for a DMZ deployment? A box in the DMZ should be in its own separate thing (domain or WG, doesn't matter which). If that box gets compromised, then the damage is only limited to that box. The attacker doesn't also get access to the production domain or any other DMZ boxes. -Original Message-From: MHR(Michael Ross) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, July 30, 2002 11:17 AMTo: MS-Exchange Admin IssuesSubject: domain Can anyone settle a bet? Kevin -Original Message- From: Belbin Clive (5K9) Croydon PCT [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 09 July 2002 13:40 To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Public folder administration access problem. The new e-mail address for the Croydon Primary Care Trust is now " @croydonpct.nhs.uk ". Please edit your address book appropriately. Hi All, I'm having difficulty getting administrative access to part of the Public Folders tree - I've given myself more access permissions than you could shake a stick at through Exchange Admin and waited several days to see if it makes any difference but it doesn't. Caveats first - I'm the fireman here, I had no part in creating the situation! We have Organisation A containing Site A containing two servers. Server A is NT4 SP5, Exch 5.5 SP3. Server B is NT4 SP6, Exch 5.5 SP4. Server A is our mail gateway. 80% of our mailboxes are on Server A and 20% of our mailboxes are on Server B. Server B has recently been added to the site and mailboxes have been imported into it from PSTs which in turn were exports of mailboxes from Server X (NT4 SP6, Exch 5.5 SP4). The problem exists in Organisation A. The Hierarchy in public folders, seen through OL97 client, is thus: Public Folders |___ Favorites |___ All Public Folders |___ Internet Newsgroups | |___ {several appointments containers} |___ Quarantine Folder {blah} I can rename "All Public Folders" but I can't create subfolders directly in it - when I click OK in the create subfolders dialogue, I get a "... do not have sufficient permission...see folder contact or system administrator..." message. I am a system administrator. In properties of All Public Folders there is no contact listed, so I couldn't contact them even if I thought it would help. I can create subfolders of the Internet Newsgroups folder. The symptoms are the same when using the OL2K client. I have tried running DS/IS Consistency Adjuster on both servers. On Server A I get a number of messages of the form "The description for Event ID () in Source ( xxx) could not be found. It contains the following insertion string(s): {blah}". Server B is able to find Event descriptions. Consistency Adjuster generates Event IDs 7024, 7040 and 7042 on server A, Event IDs 7024,7028, 7040 and 7017 on Server B. On Server A, the system event log contains a large number of event 10003s : "Access denied attempting to launch a DCOM Server using DefaultLaunchPermssion. The server is: {?class? string in here}." It may or may not be relevant but Server X is not as yet connected in any way to Organisation A, but I would like to connect in order to migrate the Public folders of Organisation X to Organisation A using inter-organisation replication. Can anyone shed any light on what may be (not) happening here? Clive Belbin, Systems Support Contractor, Croydon Primary Care Trust. RE: Issue with custom recipient
Assuming that you're replying to me; I just tried this with two people whose names I know to conflict. I created a new message. I typed smith in the To: field I pressed Ctrl-K. Outlook popped up a dialog box, and among the choices listed were Office, phone, title, company and alias. Hopefully one of those can be used to identify the correct person. If the users try using the To. button when composing an email, they can also look at the properties of a GAL entry. I prefer user education instead of kludging the department names to the last name. What if John Smith_Marketing joins the IS department? Also, unique aliases can help. The first John Smith hired gets to be [EMAIL PROTECTED] The more recently hired one gets to be [EMAIL PROTECTED] (where x is his middle initial). -Original Message- From: Dennis [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, July 08, 2002 4:19 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Issue with custom recipient Right i got that far but how will it tell apart if you have two same dispaly names. The problem is spammers using these open relays - Or even hijacking improperly closed relays - to flood junk mail all over the place... With YOUR header on it! What you want (and what I provide my customers) is *authorized* relaying. This means that only people who are authorized - Authenticated - can send mail. I am assuming this person means don't compact the store. Running eseutil can be a dangerous thing. Running either of the utilities that will change the structure of the store, can be a dangerous thing and should only be done in extreme measures (like if the IS wont start and you don't have a decent-recent backup of the store, or if you have a huge priv.edb file are running out of diskspace and know that compacting would free up a lot of space an have cheap managers who wont spend money on either more disk space or another server to offload folks to). As you will see, many folks in here are weary (with good reason) about running eseutil against the store. About the only util people tend to run is isinteg just to check the integrity of the store. Even if it needs to be fixed, most folks will just build another server and move mailboxes off of the server with a store that may have a lot of errors or is too big for its own good. Bottom line again, is to only use eseutil as a last ditch effort or isinteg -fix if the store is not accessible. FWIW - these are the reasons you keep impeccable backups of your stores and transaction logs - just like Wilford Brimley says check your blood sugar and check it often, exchange admins say check your backups and check them daily. Once you have a good base of backups, a couple weeks to a month, you will want to test and document your disaster recovery methods 1) to make sure it works and b) to get it down packed so you can do it in a minimal amount of time. Also, I recommend never letting your stores (mostly the priv.edb) get out of hand (getting too big) because it becomes harder to manage it (longer to back it up, longer to restore it, etc.) If it does get too big, either implement strict or more strict mailbox storage policies or simply build another exchange server and move users off of it - if it is e2k, of course, storage groups are a god send for thing like this. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] at INTERNET Sent: Monday, June 24, 2002 2:10 PM To: Balen, Steve B - Raleigh, NC; [EMAIL PROTECTED] at INTERNET Subject: RE: Compacting Never? -Original Message- From: Matthew Carpenter [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, June 24, 2002 2:07 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Re: Compacting DON'T DEFRAG!!! - Original Message - From: Bill Beckett [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, June 24, 2002 12:33 PM Subject: RE: Compacting 2000, 5.5, all versions? -Original Message- From: William Lefkovics [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, June 24, 2002 1:33 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Compacting Has it been a month already? In the discussion on server sizing for Exchange 2000 it was mentioned by several that I should be looking at getting away from using RAID5 for my OS, the application as well as the log files. Mirroring was mentioned quite often as how it should be configured. How are people doing this? In the past, we have tried using mirroring that comes with NT and have had pretty poor results. Is there some sort of hardware mirroring similar to the hardware RAID that I am using now? I do not see us reconfiguring our existing 5.5 servers to accomplish this but I do want to make sure that I have our 2000 optimally deployed. RE: Rule Capacity in Outlook 2000
The amount of storage allowed for server-side rules is 32kb. Total. It is independent of the number of rules. This is a server-side setting, not a client-side setting, which applies to Exchange 5.x and 2000. If you run up against this limit, try either consolidating existing rules together, or use different criteria (i.e. change a rule so that it triggers on a From address if that is shorter. * * Erik Sojka, MOS, MCSE * * Manager, Network Services * * [EMAIL PROTECTED] * * -Original Message- From: ARAE NETWORKS [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, June 10, 2002 2:26 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Rule Capacity in Outlook 2000 Hi is there a limit to the number of Rules you can have in Outlook 2000? And once again the convenience vs. security debate is launched. The downside of Outlook was it's ability to execute some script attacks from the preview pane. This is solved somewhat in later versions and patches. And is defeated through a percentage of end-users inability to control their double-click. ANY OS that has file execution associations can be hit by a virus. Both KDE and GNOME are building this functionality into their interface and as such will also be subject to this kind of attack. It is more effectively solved by preventing the executable type files from passing through your server in the first place. If someone wants to email an executable, they can zip it. At least then it is a two stage process for infection and the local desktop anti-virus sw has a shot at the new virus that your Exchange servers anti-virus missed. Even if an end user is infected (floppy, etc) they mail bomb's their own email box as the server refuses to send those attachment types internally as well. I have yet to see a legitimate reason to email an scr file in a corporate environment. :) If it is vbs or js, then the developer can rename it as txt and assume that the recipient can rename it to vbs or js. As to alternative's to Outlook in asked about in another message. You can use Eudora, Netscape Mail, Pine, etc (POP3 or IMAP).. You just LOSE the Email/Calendaring integration function which is the primary appeal of the Exchange server in a business environment. Of course, I am aware of a company that has an Exchange server and uses Outlook Express!? -sp -Original Message- From: Siegfried Weber [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, June 04, 2002 1:33 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Oh man you are kidding... The stripe set it's on is a total of 25 GB, the IS is @ 12.6 growing, if I can get drives for this server is a big IF, so far I've found none (Compaq 1850R), Exchange Enterprise 5.5 is unavailable that I've found for purchase. Yes. Absolutely. From Paul Robichaux's Managing Exchange Server 5.5: If you're running the Standard Edition of Exchange, and your public or private IS is very close to the 16GB limit, the IS will shut down instead of growing beyond that limit. If this happens, do an off-line defragmentation of the database (see Chapter 17 for details) to reclaim the database whitespace, then restart the IS. If the database is already compacted, then you may have to consider upgrading to Enterprise Edition to get the store to start. -Original Message- From: Sherry Abercrombie [ mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] ] Sent: Monday, June 03, 2002 11:21 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: 16 GB Limit? My coworker and I are trying to determine how Outlook really works. We have noticed that when we are dialed up on our laptops and connected to our network via an IPSEC VPN connection (same with PPTP), when we connect to Exchange via Outlook XP there are times we get a message that it is requesting information from the server and has a status bar. Under Outlook 2000 there was no information box like that. My argument is that under XP, it is telling you that is requesting information and this is normal operation, given that it's working on a dialup. I should clarify, that we get this box when we are trying to open email or change folders. He says this is some kind of error that needs to be resolved. Can some one shed some light on this. Keep in mind that the "delegation" you're thinking of and the "delegation" available under DNS are two different things ;) -Original Message-From: MHR(Michael Ross) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, April 10, 2002 3:57 PMTo: MS-Exchange Admin IssuesSubject: RE: DNS Im talking about allowing a defined group of admins rights to the subdomain ONLY. However, our Microsoft resident is suggesting to us that AV on the servers themselves is not necessary and will only introduce problems and instability (particularly Symantec's product). He said that when a virus outbreak occurs that actually gets inside, a quick ExMerge on the server is just as effective as pushing out virus defs using the AV product. Nope. Your only recourse is to Exmerge the mailbox to a CD, delete the account, recreate a similar account in the new OU, then Exmerge the data back in. This *will* break all existing pointers to the person (I.e. a person replying to an message will get an NDR unless they re-address the message) It's normally not recommended to use OUs in 5.5 for this reason. * * Erik Sojka, MOS, MCSE * * Manager, Network Services * * [EMAIL PROTECTED] * * -Original Message- From: Kevin Kerr [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, April 08, 2002 5:42 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Moving users between OUs in Exchange 5.5 I have created several organizational units on my Exchange 5.5 server. RE: Moving users between OUs in Exchange 5.5
The old message still contains the pointers to the old address (i.e. when replying, a new lookup isn't automatically performed). And that makes sense; to perform another lookup against the GAL or Contacts folder would add some unnecessry load to the server. It's reasonable for Outlook to assume that nothing has changed with the recipients' address(es) when replying to a message. * * Erik Sojka, MOS, MCSE * * Manager, Network Services * * [EMAIL PROTECTED] * * -Original Message- From: JENSEN, TIMOTHY C [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, April 09, 2002 9:30 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Moving users between OUs in Exchange 5.5 Wouldn't the creation of an X.500 address on the new mailbox resolve the NDR problem on emails sent prior to the move? I assume that when someone opens the attachment, it will in turn e-mail some kind of a report back to the service (or maybe directly to you?), where you can gather stats on who/how many went for it. Hi, I have partnered up with a company that basically automates the repetitive tasks associated with MS Exchange Administration. Everything from fully provisioning new accounts by simply entering the employee's ID number, to deactivating accounts and scheduling them for deletion at a later date, to moving mailboxes can be automated. The tools are about 90% out of the box and 10% customizable to a particular organization's business rules making it very application specific. If you are interested, drop me an e-mail and we can discus your situation. Thanks for your time. Having the permission of the owner of the domain doesn't mean squat in the legal world. You are talking about basically interchanging internal company information. That, plus you don't have a plan in place how you want to accomplish this. The owner of the domain may not realize the scope of a project like this, which may not even be possible. In your given scenario below, if you were to add an MX record for their domain and accept it as inbound, you would HAVE to have a way to route the messages destined for their employees. Otherwise, mail is going to bounce. Why? Because the way that MX records work is that the server with the lowest cost gets most of the messages sent to it. There will be some messages that get sent to the other server. There isn't any way around this. That means that you will be receiving mail for possibly ANY person working at the other company. You get a message for a person at the other company, and your Exchange server doesn't know what the hell to do with it. You don't have any recipients with that name set up. Ends up being very messy. I was thinking earlier about setting up custom recipients for them, but that too would end up being messy, and I don't think it would work. They could, however, set up some mailboxes and custom recipients for you, have the mailbox deliver mail to the custom recipient and have those custom recipients forward the mail to your server. That, or setting up some mailboxes for you and you using OWA, would be by far the easiest, if not the only, solutions to what you are asking. Anything else is sounding more like a consulting gig to find a solution to your problem. If they are so insistent on you using their e-mail, why don't they provide the solution? Otherwise, tell them to go with the above-mentioned OWA, or forward your mail via CR's, and let you reply using your own addy's.
