Hi Guys,

Has anyone else received similar email from vendors after you evaluated their
software. I was somewhat surprised at the tone...especially the part about avoiding
further legal action. I evaluated the software on a test network and removed it when I
found it didn't fit what I was looking for. Is it my imagination or are sales guys
getting really pushy lately...sorry for the OT post, just had to rant.

Our records show that you downloaded an evaluation copy of our software but
have not returned any of our inquiries. If Sophos is an anti virus package
that you wish to evaluate please contact me for an extension, if not please
remove the software from your systems immediately to avoid further legal
action. Our software does have the ability to report illegal/unlicensed
use back to us.

Sincerely,
Justin

send them a nasty-gram telling them to FSCK OFF due to the fact that

In E2k that only tells you the version of the Microsoft Management
Console.

To see the version and service pack for E2k, you drill down in ESM to
the server and right-click it and choose properties. The version and
service pack are right there on the first tab. Hotfixes will be found
in the add/remove programs control panel applet.

slow outlook after upgrading to e2k

2002-07-16 Thread Herchenbach, Jim

anyone,

I've just migrated to win2k server with exchange 2k, including lastest sp's. Now my
outlook starts so much slower. I can ping my server using both ip and fqdn fine.
When I do a check name it resolves instantly. I guess I'm thinking that its trying
to reslove to something, but what? After outlook loads, it performs fine. I'm not
sure if this is related, but win 2k loads slower at login too.

  To
  clarify this was done:

  Migration of Public Folders

Start the Exchange 5.5 Administrator
program, and then connect to the Exchange Server 5.5 computer.

Navigate to the following location, and
then click Public Folder Resources :
Organization\Site\Configuration\Server\ ServerName
\Public Information Store\Public Folder Resources ServerName
For each public folder in the right pane,
click File , and then click Properties .
On the Replicas tab, ensure that
only the Exchange 2000 Server computer, is listed on the right under
Replicate folders to . No Exchange Server 5.5 computers should be
present in this column. Following these steps not only replicates all public folders to
Exchange 2000 Server, but also rehomes them to Exchange 2000 Server. This
should include Schedule+ Free Busy, Offline Address Book, and Organizational
  Forms, if present.

And don't forget that your downlevel clients require either WINS or an
LMHOSTS file to locate your PDC emulator role holder. Until and unless
that is in place, it ain't gonna work.

As much as I hate WINS, I think it will be with me for another few
years, even after I get those last couple hundred Win9x boxes over to

Blow away and recreate the user.s *.pwl file. If they are mapping any
drives, the passwords don't really sync properly. WIN98 cannot really
join a domain, and the passwords are stored locally in this file, named
?.pwl for each user - I. E. joed.pwl, fred.pwl, etc..

What about the upload speed. If you are running an exchange server on
the site, and you are sending the data out over satellite, you are going
to have a 60KB upload rate or something like that aren't you? That is
what stopped us from setting up an exchange server on a remote site.

70ms latency is excellent. In fact it's so good, I don't belive there's
any way satellite can provide this kind of latency. I've used several
satellite rigs, and none come in under 500ms latency. Either their
smoking crack, or 70 ms is some BS their makreting department came up
with that refers to internal latencies on their wired network, and
doesn't represent what customer's see over their true satellite links.
You can't pump data into near earch orbit, and back that fast; the
distances are far enough that the speed of an electron becomes an issue.

That being said, most web protocols SMTP, FTP, HTTP, etc. were initial
designed for slow dial up networks with high latency. And will run fine
over the 500+ ms latencies of a satellite network. Issues would arise
with other protols such as Citrix ICA, MS RDP or SNA. If your users
want to just browse the web, and POP mail they should be fine.

Thanks. Yes, we were talking about high speed connection. The issue
of latency seems to be acceptable at certain levels... One such
measurement, 70ms, comes from a company called www.SkyPipeline.com
http://www.skypipeline.com/ . If latency is an *ENEMY* to good line
speed what will it mean to have 70ms using interactive applications
specifically remote access software?

...guaranteed to have an average round trip packet transit time within
SkyPipeline's Broadband Wireless Network over a calendar month of 70ms

high speed connectivity

As long as you get static ip it should be okay. Others may complain
about the terminology you are using, since DSL is a connection method
and so is satellite so I'm presuming you are talking about satellite for
high speed connectivity. There will be latency but it shouldn't matter
too much

And once again the convenience vs. security debate is launched.

The downside of Outlook was it's ability to execute some script attacks from
the preview pane. This is solved somewhat in later versions and patches.
And is defeated through a percentage of end-users inability to control their
double-click. ANY OS that has file execution associations can be hit by a
virus. Both KDE and GNOME are building this functionality into their
interface and as such will also be subject to this kind of attack.

It is more effectively solved by preventing the executable type files from
passing through your server in the first place. If someone wants to email
an executable, they can zip it. At least then it is a two stage process for
infection and the local desktop anti-virus sw has a shot at the new virus
that your Exchange servers anti-virus missed. Even if an end user is
infected (floppy, etc) they mail bomb's their own email box as the server
refuses to send those attachment types internally as well. I have yet to
see a legitimate reason to email an scr file in a corporate environment. :)

If it is vbs or js, then the developer can rename it as txt and assume that
the recipient can rename it to vbs or js.

As to alternative's to Outlook in asked about in another message.
You can use Eudora, Netscape Mail, Pine, etc (POP3 or IMAP).. You just
LOSE the Email/Calendaring integration function which is the primary appeal
of the Exchange server in a business environment.

Of course, I am aware of a company that has an Exchange server and uses
Outlook Express!?

It is what happens when people insist on using Outlook as their MUA.

BS! You can get any type of virus if you open a mail and execute an attached
file.

I don't reboot unless I absolutely have to. This includes network
equipment as well as servers. If you have to reboot things on a monthly
basis for network stability, there is an underlying problem that should
be addressed.

Just curious-- how often do people reboot their exchange servers? Or do
you? Our exchange server has been up for 7 months straight now w/o a
reboot. I am wondering if it would be a good idea to reboot it every now
and then-- free up any memory leakages, etc.. Is it necessary, or can I
let it just keep chugging away until it is necessary? Any input,
thoughts, etc. would be great. Thanks.
