As are NAI products generally.

Anybody else see their WebShield product completely ignore BadTrans

RE: Errors uninstalling Groupshield 4.5

2001-12-12 Thread Martin Reilly
Title: Message

I see
NAI haven't improved the uninstall procedure for Groupshield between 4.0 and 4.5
then. Oh joy.

Not
wishing to put a damper on things, but in the past I've built a new Exchange
server into a site and moved the users to it rather than trying to remove
GroupShield. It's easier that way, trust me. I don't think a server is ever
quite the same again once that software has been installed.
:(

Unfortunately, the MS install cleaner only deals with
MSI packages, and while regedit will (with time, patience and a little bit of
luck) get rid of all the registry entries, it won't fix the damage (if I was
being kind, I might say "changes") to the Exchange databases that GroupShield
makes.

Just
for starters - the changes and updates to your organization forms library, the
changes to the object types of scanned items, and the GroupShield admin mailbox
will not get cleared out properly.

Even
my "add a new server and move people to it" method doesn't do the whole job,
you've still got NAI junk in your forms library.

The
safest thing is not to install it in the first place, of course. And if you have
to evaluate it, NEVER EVER do it on a production server. That's strictly
something to do on an isolated test box.

  Steve

  I've had
the same issues. You can download an installer cleaner from Microsoft - can't
remember the link off hand though it was easy to find. If that fails (like it
did with me) then its regedit time - remove every reference to Mcafee and
reboot. Groupshield's uninstall is pretty much
  useless.

  The
permissions problem you've had I experienced as well. You need to use Q261092
as a reference and adapt it accordingly

  Hope
  this helps

The default list GroupShield uses is pretty comprehensive, IMHO.

RE: Transaction Logs

2001-12-15 Thread Martin Reilly

It all depends on how busy the server is. Are those 2000 users sending
five messages each a day or five hundred?

I have 9Gb for logs on a server with 200 users. Most space I've seen
used up was around 1Gb, which built up over three days when the tape
drive was broken so we ran no backup. Scaling that up, you'd have been
over 9Gb in a similar situation.

If I was building a new server today, with disk prices the way they are,
I'd probably spec a mirrored pair of 18Gb drives for logs (or even
more... can you ever have too much disk space?).

RE: Anit-Virus Software for Exchange

2001-12-23 Thread Martin Reilly

HOWEVER...

If you do decide to try GroupShield from Network Associates, do NOT,
repeat NOT, test it out on a server you care about. Do it on a test
server that you build just for the purpose, on a separate network and in
a separate Exchange organisation from your production environment. If
you can arrange to do it on a separate continent (or better still
another planet), that would be even better. ;)

Seriously... having looked at several products, GroupShield is the only
one that causes lasting damage. You'll spend weeks trying to rid your
organisation of it's left-overs (changes to your organisation forms
library, just for example) if you try to uninstall it. GroupShield
sucks. It's terrible. It is truly awful software. Frankly, it makes
Lotus Notes/Domino look like a pretty good piece of code in comparison
(one of these days I'll get around to writing up my "Why Notes/Domino
Sucks" web site, but I'll need to find an ISP that gives me more than my
current 100Mb of web space first to be sure I can fit it all in... ).

My personal favourite Exchange AntiVirus product is ScanMail. ScanMail
is cool. It's completely reliable. It caused me no problems at all in
three years. In THREE YEARS (yes, that's thirty-six months), I didn't
have any reason to call for support - not once. It just installed,
worked well, and caused me no problems. I've heard similar reports about
Sybari's Antigen, though I've never tried it myself. I deployed ScanMail
to eleven servers spread across a slow WAN and eleven separate countries
in just under eleven minutes. It took me four days and approximately
twenty calls to NAI "support" to get GroupShield just to install on one
Exchange server (OK, the first ten installs were quite smooth, but FOUR
DAYS to solve an installation issue on the last one??? Go figure...).

I used GroupShield years ago. It sucked then. I was forced to switch
from ScanMail back to GroupShield recently against my better judgement
(Enterprise licensing deal... I couldn't persuade the pointies that the
"free" software thrown in with the big desktop AV software deal was
worth exactly what they were paying for it). In the six weeks since
then, I have had at least DAILY dealings with NAI "support". And every
day, I find a new reason to wish I was still using ScanMail.

Late last week I moved the last of my
mail users from an older Alpha NT 4 box onto the new Windows 2000 server and
removed the Alpha from the site. These last users are the only users that
connect thru POP3 access, and with the move to the new server they can no
longer receive emails with attachments. As these are remote users I checked
the firewall etc., and then tried POP3 access in house using Outlook Express
and out of 575 emails with 60 or 70 attachments, I received only 6
attachments. There are no restrictions on these accounts, and the
attachments vary in size from 20 bytes on up.

RE: OT - Domino/Notes Versus Exchange

2002-01-08 Thread Martin Reilly

I can honestly say that Notes/Domino is without too much doubt the most
awful software I have ever had to work with. (I say without *too* much
doubt because some days I think GroupShield may hold that honour... it
depends which I've had to work with most recently). I worked with Notes
and Domino every day - both as an administrator and an end-user - for
nearly a year. I found new reasons to hate it every single day.

Where should I start?

The client is unintuitive, slow, and unreliable. Pretty much every
single user interface design error known to software designers is
demonstrated somewhere in Notes at least once.

The administrative tools make the client look quite well organised and
well behaved.

The server side components leak memory like it was going out of fashion
and appear to merely tolerate running on the same box as Windows rather
than integrating with the OS in any sensible way.

The security model is over-engineered, over-complex, under-functional,
and doesn't integrate with anything useful (users hate having to sign in
twice, once for Windows, once for Notes, and who can blame them?).
Likewise the directory.

I could go on for pages and pages on the cons... one day I'll write up
the "Alternative Notes FAQ" that I keep threatening to put on the web.

The pros?

Well... not too many virus writers have noticed Notes, so you can have
an easier time there than with Outlook.

Alledgedly, Notes is good for workflow and small databases, but I've yet
to see anything done with it that couldn't have been achieved much
faster, cheaper and more reliably with MS Office integrated with
Exchange.

It's a niche market. Before it sinks without a trace (which I'll give
three, maybe four years) there is probably going to be good money for
people with skills looking after it or - better still - the right skills
for migrating people off of it onto Exchange.

I disagree. You can have fantastic clusters with up to thirty two
machines that will give you no trouble at all.

Of course, you have to be running OpenVMS, and so far, Exchange doesn't
run under that, but hey...

RE: Migration from lotus notes

2002-01-22 Thread Martin Reilly

Ah, I've been that direction too. My company had a short phase of
temporary insanity (brought on by listening to the Gartner Group too
much) and got part way into migrating from Exchange to Notes. Then came
the revolution (really!).

As you might expect, there are very few tools for migrating from
Exchange to Notes. It's just not a direction reasonable people would
choose to go, so that's no surprise. Of the few products that there are,
only one works to the point of being useful, though it's still FAR from
perfect. That was the product from Binary Tree (www.binarytree.com).
It's almost a year since I used it, but at that point, it was still
riddled with bugs and unbelievably slow. However, at least it moved the
mailboxes across at least mainly intact and at least most of the time,
which the other products didn't seem capable of.

If I was put in a similar position again, the first thing I'd do is
quit. Seriously. However, if you don't want to do that, I would very
seriously recommend that you make no attempt to migrate user data. It
just isn't worth the time and money and hassle, not just to you, but
also to your users. Leave their Exchange data where it is, leave then
with read access to it for reference, and start fresh with empty Notes
mailboxes. Yes, they'll hate you for it, but then... they're going to
hate you anyway for the migration, so what difference does it make?

  1. Now I am thinking is there any anti - signature

  2. If I do not want him to get my emails getting

Lastly, his use of rules and that of someone I
worked with last week reinforces to me  - my and other exchange admin
lack of  Outlook knowledge. More questions on the use of outlook should
be added to exchange certification process.  Beyond the basics, I have no
