Mailbox manager

2001-11-26 Thread Mitchell Mike

Good morning all,

Outlook 98. Exchange 5.5 SP4.

We are in the process of setting up Exchange's Mailbox Manger to help our
organization clean up our disk space. from a high overview the first thing
I saw was that this mailbox manager cleans only certain directories. What I
am worried about is the user that figures out that they can save messages in
a subdirectory below the Inbox and those messages won't be purged. Am I
looking at this the wrong way? Is there a setting that tells me to clean up
Inbox and all directories below Inbox?

Thanks for your help.

exchange Mailbox manager

2001-11-29 Thread Mitchell Mike

Good afternoon,

Exchange 5.5 Outlook 98.

We are trying to implement Mailbox Manager on our test server. We have it
turned on and have our settings in place. We press Clean Now and nothing
happens. We also have it scheduled to run at 3:00 a.m. every morning. We
do have aged eMAIL in our mailboxes.

Nothing happens. Nothing disappears like we were hoping. Nothing moved
from the folders to the deleted items folders. No reports sent to the
administrator none the users.

What could we be doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this problem.

RE: exchange Mailbox manager

2001-11-30 Thread Mitchell Mike

Good morning,

Got mailbox manager working.. It was a date problem on the server. Thanks
for your help.

Now that I have presented this wonderful tool to my manager and he wants to
change a few things...

Is there any way we can not send out the letters to the users? Or if we
have to send the letters can we modify them to just say 'we have cleaned
your mailbox.'?

Have a great weekend.

Invalid Page Fault

I have a client that keeps getting an invalid page fault when she tries to

Hmm. This sounds similiar to the "Nimbda" virus. I seem to remember this
being one of the affects on the client side. Not positive though. I cannot
remember if the client was able to open Outlook and then the system would
crash after opening the mail? However, it's probably worth checking into.

Other suggestions. It seems that I have seen this problem before in the
past when the pc has bad memory. Seems like a waste of time but you might
try swapping the memory out after you have verified that the machine is
virus free.

She can get use OWA to gain access to her mailbox; however, we scan all
incoming and outgoing mail for virus's and have the latest Mcafee DAT files.
An admin can login and works just fine to her account, I guess I will try
and see what I can find in her mailbox, but there should not be any virus's
because we block them

Mike-

I think what he was trying to convey is that the person has a virus in their
mailbox and it is causing the GPF. I agree with him and have seen this in
experience. If you have the OWA you can enter and delete the message so they
can get back into mail.

RE: Mailbox size limits

2001-12-21 Thread Mitchell Mike

It is not that we are tight on disk space it is just that our mailboxes are
only 50M and if someone internally sends out 15M files it doesn't take long
to close down mailboxes.

that is why we are trying to limit the amount of data a person sends
internally.

By the way Kevin how is your mailboxes mover for multiple mailboxes coming
along?

Mike

Yeah, the Limits is the right place. If you get hold of an ADSI editor or

moving mailboxes and having problems

2001-12-30 Thread Mitchell Mike

Good afternoon,

Exchange 5.5 sp4 and Outlook 98.

When moving mailboxes from one container to another is it true that a
person's profile has to be refreshed by doing a check name after keying in
the mailbox name?

I have been testing this and find that it is true. We have 1638 mailboxes
to move from one container to another.

We are doing the following: back up the mailbox to a PST, delete the
mailbox, add the mailbox to the correct container, restore the mailbox from
the PST. Then when trying to sign in we get unable to open default folders.
I thought it might be a timing (synching problem) so I wanted 20 hours and
still get the same error.

Please let me know if you know of an easier way to move these mailboxes. (I
know Kevin Snook company has mailbox mover but that is one at a time also
and we really haven't got that to work either.)

Happy holidays.

Regards,

Mike Mitchell

RE: moving mailboxes and having problems

2002-01-02 Thread Mitchell Mike

Hey Kevin,

We did try mailbox mover out for the single account. It worked just fine.
I have sent you several eMAILs asking if you had mailbox mover for multiple
mailboxes completed yet. I have heard nothing. We would really like to use
your tools and are aniously awaiting them into production.

Please let me know as soon as possible so we can proceed.

Happy new year.

Hey Mike,

Thanks for the feedback!

I spend a lot of time making these utilities available to people but have to
rely on them to give me feedback if they don't appear to work. It's not too
much to ask, is it? Wouldn't you supply feedback to a company if you had
bought the product? I get a bit fed up with guys who take the products we
produce (FOR FREE!), provide no feedback, then whinge about them appearing
not to work. MailMover DOES work, I have about 300 companies using it
satisfactorily.

If you have trouble with profiles, I would suggest my createprf tool but
then you'd probably not be able to get that to work either!!

Happy New Year!

Kevin

Outlook hangs up

2002-01-04 Thread Mitchell Mike

Good Morning,

Outlook 98 and NT 5.5 SP4 Windows 95.

It seems that everyday, once a day, my Outlook hoses up. It is usually when
I am creating (replying to) a message. I put the name in the TO: field and
tab down to enter my message and the name does not resolve. If I don't
notice the name has not resolved and send the message Outlook sits there and
does nothing. I have to Ctrl Alt Delete to get my Outlook back. I also
have to get rid of the Wfcrun32 task or my tabbing capabilities doesn't
work.

Has anyone experienced similar problems?

Happy New Year.

I would suggest running the cleanreminders or cleanfreebusy switches. See
the TechNet article below. If that does not do it, you may need to create a
new profile for that account.

Good morning,

We have a resource called OHR10. When trying to access the calendar for

We can access this calendar from OWA without a problem.

We have tried to Import the mailbox to a PST but once again when the task
gets into Calendar it clocks the work station. And we once again have to
CTRL ALT DEL to get out.

Does anyone have any suggestions on making this work?

OUTLOOK or EXCHANGE?

type in Angie Presnell the name just sits there and does not underline. You
can send the message without an resolved name and the message is sent.

Not sure if you already figured this out, but you need to create a profile
for the user when you give delegate permissions. I had a similar issue,
when I connected to the mailbox and gave delegate permissions they would not
follow the mailbox. It only worked after I created a profile for that
particular user.

empty, but several contained items from 1999 and 2000 that were long ago
deleted.

I did delete all those folders again, so there is not much for you to look
at. I just wanted you to be aware that this has occurred. Does this stuff
ever really go away?!

Ali,

Have you tested this and seen if it worked by changing the size on

Hi,

If you set a policy limit in the info store for message size limits to
lets say 2mb. Is there a way to allow maybe a handful of users to not
have message size limits? We have 500 mailboxes and approximately 98%
of them we would like to keep message size limits but there are a few
members in our marketing dept that need to send out large files at
times. It there a way to do this where I will not have to indivually
assign limits to the majority of the mailboxes and just be able to
override the limit for the marketing mailboxes?

Thanks,

Good afternoon,

Outlook 98 NT 5.5 SP4.

Mary Taylor did not want to be on the global address list as Mary any
longer. She said all of her friends knew her as MJ. SO I changed her from
Taylor Mary to Taylor MJ. Now her name does not resolve when I key in MJ
Taylor as where Mary Taylor did resolve.

IS there anything else I have to change? DO I have to delete the nick file?

MailboxManager - Purge procedure.

2002-03-06 Thread Mitchell Mike

Good morning,

If you do not use mailbox manager please delete this message.

For those of you that use mailbox manager could you tell me if the Deleted
Items folder is purged first then the
messages over X number of days are moved from those folders to the deleted
items folder?

Also can the mailbox manager have two different run times as suggested in
the letter below? They are worried that
mailbox manager moves items first and then deletes, but I could not find
anything in the documentation.

Mike

We do the same type of thing, in-house. We wrote a little program that we
send out as an attachment from time-to-time. We send it to everyone in the
company with a forged header to appear to come from elsewhere, and we
include a nice little "pigeon-english" subject, similar to "I send you this
file to have your advice" ;-).
If the (l)user runs it, a nice little box pops up on their PC and lets them
know that they could have just hosed their machine and seriously fzckued up
the network. It also logs their username to a text file on one of our
servers, so we can keep tabs on who we caught. It makes for good
entertainment on a Friday afternoon.

I heard a comment on some tech show last week from someone who was talking
about the dangers of email bombs, and apparently there is a service out
there that you can connect to, compose a "tempting" junk mail for your
users, and send it off to see who will actually blow off the "be careful"
policy at work and just open the message and/or corresponding attachment
anyway. I assume that when someone opens the attachment, it will in turn
e-mail some kind of a report back to the service (or maybe directly to
you?), where you can gather stats on who/how many went for it. This guy
quoted a stat -- something like 40% of users will typically open any
message/attachment regardless of policy or the repeated preaching by email
admins.

I got a call recently (rather irate user) trying to open an attachment from
an unsupported app...
user: "I can't open an attachment"
me: "what is it - a word doc or spreadsheet or something?"
user: "I don't know"
me: "is it something you were expecting from someone?"
user: "no"
me: "why are you trying to open it?"
user: "I just want to see what it is"
me: "just ignore it"
user: "but why can't I open it?"
me: "you're PC doesn't recognize what it is"
user: "well, I sent to so-and-so, and what's-her-name, (etc..), and they
can't open it either"
me: "just delete it and I'll tell them to do the same"

Our users not only dive into the unknown, but they make sure their friends
are doing the same - aarhhhh! These guys get the sermon on a regular
basis but it just doesn't sink in. When I heard about this kind of service
out there, I thought "this is kind of sneaky (would it even be considered a
kind of entrapment?)", but it would clearly demonstrate the problem to the
managers here. Someone on another list once made a very wise comment
(probably been said here too) about trying to use technology to solve
behavioral problems, but that's not my intent. I'd like to use technology
to raise awareness of the problem - not to solve it. The service might give

us a more tangible idea if there are a lot of people here that blow off
policy and just open everything they get, and it could be up to the managers

here to deal with the offending staff appropriately.

Is this kind of service something very new? Does anyone know anything about

it? I wish I could have caught the details of that show but I was
multitasking that day (my 5-year-old took over as highest priority) so I got

side-tracked, but I'd like to know if anyone has any thoughts on this.

thanks
randy.

I'm not sure why the free/busy information gets suddenly published
improperly, but I've experienced the same thing. Running the
/cleanfreebusy switch might help steps are outlined in
http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q246866&;.
This article only describes how to do this with individual Outlook profiles.
I'd love to hear from if there's a way to run it on multiple profiles at
once as I have to run this from time to time on all our boardroom mailboxes?
If you're dealing with loads of users there may be a way to fix this with an
additional to their logon script? (unfortunately not yet my area of
expertise).

the resource kit but did not see a name that looked familiar.

Thanks

Needing to open a mailbox to verify...

2002-04-09 Thread Mitchell Mike

Good morning,

Outlook 98 Exchange 5.5

We have mailboxes on two servers. Sometimes for no reason at all people
cannot get into one or the other server. There are no errors on the logs
and we can't figure out what is going on.

We would like to build a mailbox on each server that will allow us to test
if the server is working when people call into the Help Desk stating that
they cannot access the server.

I have built the mailbox and am trying to test this new procedure out. I
have given the help desk people USER permission on the mailbox. I have
created a new profile on the help desk workstation. When the Help desk
person signs on, they use their userid and password, they get the 'Unable to
open your default e-mail folders.
You do not have permissions to sign on.' message. I cannot figure out what
I am doing wrong.

I went to the knowledge database and get The logon credentials of the
Exchange Client or Outlook are different from the logon credentials of the
user logged into the workstation.
But what exactly does that mean? Please help me.

Of course, at this point, I would like to say that MailMover
(www.mailsoftware.co.uk) does everything in this article programmatically.
It also gets around the issue of updating profiles.

Once you have a solution for this problem, making more use of containers
becomes logical for access control.

They certainly do ... That is the only real solution I have ever seen to
move between OU's. It is still no fun. I do not think he mentioned in
there, something William has learned the hard way, That the letters DN
OU CN and all the like are CASE SENSITIVE. So if you do mess with them
MAKE sure you do not change the case. Else ADC and Exchange migrations
will be no fun. Not that ADC is ever fun.

Just to add more to this. I exported the calendar to a PST. It appears
that I can manage the calendar as long as I don't try to view the
calendar. When I opened the PST on another computer and clicked on the
calendar it caused Outlook to hang on that machine as well. I set the
autoarchive to delete anything older than a day (still on the PST) and set
the computers date to 2004. It finished the archive, but when I clicked
on it I got the same response. If anyone has any ideas on this I would
appreciate it.

Having problems with accounts.

2002-04-18 Thread Mitchell Mike

Good morning,

Outlook 98. Exchange 5.5 sp4.

When looking at our Mailbox Resources list, we have several users that show
up. They have no
Windows NT account associated with these accounts. We receive the following
errors:

The object cannot be found in the directory. This may be because
replication has not been completed.

Microsoft Exchange Directory ID no: c101aae.

We cannot delete these accounts. I could not find anything in the KB.

Does anyone have a clue at what might be going on?

I am not understanding something in this article. Would you please explain

In the following:

2. Log on as the Site Services Account and setup an Outlook profile to

How is that done? When I do what I thought I was supposed to do, under
delivery tab I only on account to choose from,
the Original one. It has none under that and I can't change that. How do I
change that from old to new?

Also, how do I sign onto both accounts at once? I added the new mailbox to

Nope. Your only recourse is to Exmerge the mailbox to a CD, delete the
account, recreate a similar account in the new OU, then Exmerge the data
back in. This *will* break all existing pointers to the person (I.e. a
person replying to an message will get an NDR unless they re-address the
message)

It's normally not recommended to use OUs in 5.5 for this reason.

It depends on your org needs. If I have a 100 MB mailbox limit, that may be
too low for you.

Acceptable language?? Use common sense. How do you plan to monitor that

File size limits? Depends on your servers capabilities and bandwidth.

Outlook 98. exchange 5.5 sp4

User sent out an eMAIL to a large distribution list by mistake. The Recall
Message action feature did not work very well on this.
This was very sensitive eMAIL that went out and needs to be trapped before
too many people read it. What can I do?

Thanks in advance.

Why would an email?

2002-06-18 Thread Mitchell Mike

Good afternoon,

Outlook 98 Exchange 5.5 sp4

I have a user that claims they are not receiving eMAILs from one person
outside the organization. I emailed that
outside person and asked for a reply. I cc: my Yahoo account so I could see
if I was having networking problems.
I have checked this person's mailbox and there is no messages from this
outside person.

The outside person received my eMAIL and replied to all. My Yahoo account
got the reply just like that but my
Outlook account finally got the message after 4 1/2 hours... WOW. What is
up with that? I have checked
my queues and nothing is backed up. I can send eMAIL to my Yahoo account
from my Outlook account and vice versa
and the messages are received on a timely bases. I have checked my logs and
see nothing strange.

Has anyone had a similar problem? Please help me out.

Mike Mitchell
