RE: Clustering

2002-06-13 Thread Richardson, Kendall (UNISYS)

I have a similar concern at my agency that Bill seems to have. My
management is deathly afraid of losing our email capability and has asked me
to come up with alternatives to provide redundancy. I've never worked with
clustering, but I assume the concept is to provide failover capability. So,
what is the best way to provide assurance of minimal email downtime (less
than 30 minutes) in the event of a server failure, or is that a pipe dream
if you have a catastrophic failure? Thanks

As Kevin mentioned, there is still a single point of failure - there is
only one information store. No matter how many cluster nodes,
corruption in the store is not fault tolerant.

We would not recommend it. More issues and you still have a
single point
of failure.

What are you wanting to achieve?

Would the list recommend clustering of exchange servers or too
many
issues with this? Too difficult to setup?

MTA looping

2002-03-14 Thread Richardson, Kendall (UNISYS)

I am running exchange 5.5, SP4 on NT4, 6a server. Lately, I have had a few
emails get kicked back to senders with the following MTA looping error
message:

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

Joe smith on 3/13/2002 12:05 PM
The recipient was detected looping within the message transfer
service
The MTS-ID of the original message is: c=US;a=
;p=ORGANIZATION;l=VASRV2-020313170505Z-27464
MSEXCH:MSExchangeMTA:HQDA:DADC012

My event log also has a lot of the following warnings:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: MSExchangeMTA
Event Category: Interface
Event ID: 4283
Date: 3/14/2002
Time: 8:09:04 AM
User: N/A
Computer: VASRV2
Description:
Unable to recognize an internal message identifier. Internal connection
handle (LPI) 1-15-2 Error code: 8464 [POP4 POP4 UP 7 228] (14)

I am not sure if the looping is related to the event ID 4283 MTA warning.
I'd like to resolve both issues but the mail looping seems to be the bigger
issue right now. Would appreciate any guidance. Thanks in advance.

Who are the recipients of the messages? Are they same server, different
server, Internet, etc?

Someone else had 4283 recently, and it can be difficult to find out any
info on this event. The most likely cause is the generic network
problem. It might be worth checking this area out.

public folder properties

2002-03-12 Thread Richardson, Kendall (UNISYS)

I am running exchange 5.5, SP4 on NT4, 6a with Outlook 2000 clients.
Another site in my exchange org created a public folder containing a contact
list. My users can open the public folder contact list and see the entries.
However, my users are not able to open the properties on the folder, Outlook
address book tab, to show the contact list as an address book (users in the
site that owns the public folder can open the properties on the folder).
When we try to open the properties we get an error message saying 'can't
display folder properties...' We have verified that replication has taken
place between the two sites, and my users have 'author' permissions on the
folder. We can add new contacts to this folder, so it doesn't seem to be a
permissions issue. There is no trust relationship between the two
sites-didn't think there had to be though. Any ideas why my users can't
view the folder properties? Thanks in advance for the help

MTA Warning

2002-03-04 Thread Richardson, Kendall (UNISYS)

I have Exchange 5.5, SP4 installed on an NT4, 6a server. For the past week
I have been getting a lot of warnings in my event viewer (see below). This
morning I've logged about 20, occurring at random intervals from 2 minutes
to 20 minutes apart. Technet has this exact event ID, but the solution is
to install SP4, which I have already done. Other than the log entries, I
haven't noticed any problem with the server operation-mail is all flowing
normally, but I feel like the other shoe is getting ready to drop soon. Can
you point me to some other troubleshooting paths that I can look at. Thanks
much for the help.

messagewise message?

2001-12-13 Thread Richardson, Kendall (UNISYS)

I am getting the following message via email from my exchange server 5.5
SP4, NT4 SP6a. the message gets repeated about once every 2 minutes.

MessageWise.Public IS disk % free space = -1

I've never seen this message before. Can anyone tell me what it means. I
have a server monitor and 2 link monitors set up to notify me via email and
page when things go south. Since the message came via email, I assume it
was generated by one of the monitors. I have approx 10 public folders
(less than 3MB total space) that get replicated out to a sister site in the
next state. I looked at the disk space on the server, and there is LOTs of
free space, and mail is flowing normally. Thanks

public folder contacts list

2001-12-13 Thread Richardson, Kendall (UNISYS)

Exchange 55, SP4, all NT4 network

I created a public folder that contains a contacts list with names for all
of our internal and external customers. I replicate this public folder to
another site that we do business with. This remote site can view the
contacts list, but they can NOT select properties for the folder. When they
do so, they get a grey screen saying the properties for the folder are
unavailable. I have set default client permissions to reviewer for the
folder from within Exchange Admin. I also gave default publishing editor
permissions to users from the actual public folder in Outlook. If users
can't see the properties for the folder, they are unable to go into the
contacts list Outlook Address Book tab and check the box to make the list an
address book, which prevents them from setting this contacts list as a
folder in the addressing tab of exchange server properties. What am I doing
wrong that is preventing the remote users from seeing the properties for
this folder? Thanks for the help

OWA login

2001-09-05 Thread Richardson, Kendall (UNISYS)

Exchange 5.5 SP3, NT4, 6a. I submitted this question earlier today-thanks
to those that provided ideas. After further troubleshooting, the situation
has changed slightly so I am asking again. When ANY normal users login to
OWA they get an error message saying failed to connect to Microsoft
exchange server. Anyone with admin privileges can login normally. The
IUSR account has logon locally and access this machine from network
privileges on the OWA local machine. Everyone has change permissions on the
exchsrvr\webdata and exchsrvr\webtemp directories. It sure sounds like a
permissions issue preventing normal users from accessing OWA, but I can't
figure out what else to check. Help?

new users don't get a calendar

2001-08-24 Thread Richardson, Kendall (UNISYS)

When I create new user mailboxes, the mailbox does not have a calendar,
contacts, drafts, journal, or notes folder. I am running NT4 with 6a and
Exch 55 with SP3. From within Outlook I can go in and add a calendar folder
for these users, and users can add items to the new calendar, but no one
else can view the calendar from their own workstations, regardless of
permissions set. Last week I upgraded from standard edition to enterprise
for Exchange--not sure if that had any bearing on this problem, but in the
past I have always been able to create normal mailboxes with all of the
standard folders. Thanks for the help.

profile all of the appropriate folders were there. Thanks much

Create a profile that points to the new mailbox as the primary mailbox. Open
the mailbox with the Outlook client. The client will create the folders for
you. If not, there is a switch you can use when starting Outlook to create
the folders (Can the list help me out here, I've forgotten the exact wording
of the switch.)

In TechNet search for command line options and Outlook, and you should be
able to get a list.
