Title: RE: Anti Virus Software

Well
I think it's wonderful.  Don't think of it as AV software (although nothing
has ever got past it of that nature) and more as a very sophisticated
Content Filter, a Reporting tool, and an easier way of implementing
additional functions such as auto response, relay blocking, user level control
of e-mail , spam blocking etc

ahh
go see the web-site, it's early and my typing fingers aren't working too well
yet.

Here's my $0.02 on this subject.
We use Officescan for desktops, Antigen for Exchange and
Norton for our servers.  This way we are covered round robin.

More and more it is getting to the point that you really
*SHOULD* use a different vendor solution for your desktop, mail and servers,
instead of going full hog on one vendor for everything.  This way you
are covered from all angles as everyone's scan engines detect virii
differently.
I agree that it may cost a little more money and time for
different vendors, but I definitely do sleep at night knowing my rear is
covered.
And yes, McAfee/NAI stinks for an AV solution.

Here is something I actually posted for someone else
recently.
OK, here is my Trend spiel. I am now
in my second company where I have done a full Trend rollout using their Neat
Suite product. http://www.antivirus.com/products/neatsuite/exchange.htm I
paid 3K for a 100 User license. This bundle includes
the VirusWall gateway, Scanmail for Exch, Server Protect, and Office Protect
for the desktops. These conversions came about from two virus outbreaks that
McAffee and/or Norton could not contain. The first was ILOVEYOU. We upgraded
to Scanmail mid virus. It passed though our Groupshield, but I was able to
contain it from being executed (thank god for small env). I literally
downloaded and installed Scanmail on the fly. No testing, nothing. Just went
for it and never looked back. We later upgraded the rest of the clients.
They called my the virus hunter there because nothing ever got past me
again. At my latest gig, we were running the whole Mcaffee suite here. My
first week we had a big outbreak. We ended up rebuilding about 20 PC's and a
couple of servers. Once again, we upgraded to Trend.
So I can tell you, first hand,.
Mcaffee isn't good enough. Period. As long as you use it, you will get
virus's that pass right through it. Its better than nothing, but not good
enough.
Now here is a bonus about
OfficeProtect. If you run it via a logon script, it will automatically
uninstall NAI, or NAV and then install itself. WONDERFUL!! Lot less work for
you. We have also found that our stations are much more stable than they
were on Mcaffee/NAI.
Honestly, I do not believe you can
buy a better product. I know Antigen is a fine product, but it only covers
your Exch box. It isn't going to protect you when someone opens a hotmail
message. That WS will still get infected. I demod Antigen when I did the
Exch rollout. It is a fine product, but I dislike the GUI. In the end the
guy from Antigen asked me "If you could have either Trend or Antigen today
and they were both free, which would you pick?". I said Trend. I couldn't
leave what to me has been a perfect program behind. That just how much I
love it. I sleep well at night knowing that I am covered by the best money
can buy.

Hi all,
    I have sent this
to both lists as it covers both Exchange and NT.
I have read with interest a lot of threads with regards to
whether or not one should use AV on servers/exchange etc.. and I am of the
opinion that the more the merrier.
Currently we have been using NAV 7.6 corp for our desktops,
file server and exchagne server.  It is now time to renew and when I
informed the boss about the price, she wants me to review the options.

  What do you mean
you don't need Outlook? According to their documentation, you MUST have a mail
profile set up for the Backup service account on the server that is doing the
backups. I may have missed it, are you running the backup on this server, oir
remotely. Even so, it looks like your issue is not permissions, or access. I
agree that you should reinstall the agent. Our issue was a handful of items
that they don't bother to tell you upfront. We had to pay the $89 incident fee
to find out. We seem to be running in good order now though. What a pain in
  the a_s.

Same problem I am getting - I
use 8.5 I was hoping 8.6 would solve it but does not seem so by your
error.

If you figure this out let me
know.  I am thinking of going to a different
product.

With outlook 98, does anyone know of a way
to set all folder to be enable for offline access?  The client has
several hundred folders and subfolders and I can't upgrade outlook because of
corporate defaults.  I wish I could since you just select all with the
  newer versions of outlook.

  1.)
I am trying to send Email
between applications using CDO but, since we have the Outlook security patch I
recieve a msgbox saying "A program is trying to
automatically send e-mail on your behalf.  Do you want to allow
  this?" with 'Yes'
  and 'No' buttons.  Is there
  a way around this?
  2.)
  Regardless if this could
be done or not can CDO be used to send e-mail between applications that are
  running as a windows services?

O O F Replies

2002-03-19 Thread Simon Curtiss

The joy of defending disallowing O O F replies has fallen to me at last.

Apart from

1) Mail Loops
2) Annoying the thousands of people on mailing lists you are subscribed to
(yes I know you can subscribe from PF's)
3) Can only be turned on/off for whole org
4) Not all e-mail systems will necesarily get the O O F reply (not sure this
is true these days?)
5) Staff issues - not turning on/off appropriately, not updating text of
message
6) Not Best Practice as customer may never see it, and it place the onus of
communication on the customer

Shame auotmatic replis to the internet is a different control as then this
would not be an issue!

Can anyone think of any other ammo - the archives contain nothing much as we
obviously haven't discussed this in the last month - shock horror!

  Exchange 5.5 SP3+ on NT4 SP6. 4 servers in our

If you have other reasons to purchase it Mail Marshal will do this too. Too

Title: RE: Deploying the Outlook Security Form

Sorry I haven't been paying attention to this thread but if you are using
NT4.0 policy and not W2K then if you set something in a policy, then you have to
un-set it to make it enabled/disabled. e.g if you 'ticked' something, then leave
it as a 'unticked' field not greyed out.

Does
that make sense?

  Hmm.. oddly enough, I
removed the "Disable Registry Editing Tools" restrictions from the users'

  Well,
no, because "Registry Editing Tools Have Been
Disabled", which I always thought was a good policy to have in place so that
users couldn't go installing their own apps as they please (something which we
have a policy (paper, one, I mean) in place here to prevent, but that doesn't
always stop people). I guess I have to disable that for everyone for now, have
them log off and on, make those changes, and then re-enable it, and have them
  log off and on again..

  Thanks

  if you use .pol

If you use logon scripts, you can set
that reg key in your logon script hkey current user is editable by the

  I am trying to
finally get the "Outlook Security Form" to work for our Outlook 2000 users (on W2K
Pro, logging into an NT4 domain). We are not using Group Policies at
this time. I have never found a way to modify the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Security
  key, since my users
can't modify the registry like this, and
  I can't access the
  HKEY_CURRENT_USER key remotely using
  regedt32.
  I did some more
digging at this as time has allowed and I've come across this section of the
readme.txt file that comes with admpack.exe. In it, it says that in order to
change the registry key on a user's machine, you do the
  following:

  2.4.1
Update the Outlook policy template file for Windows 2000 1  On the Start menu,
click Run, and then type "gpedit.msc" to    start the Group Policy
  Editor.
  2  Import the Outlk9.adm

3  Expand the following series of
  folders:
     User
  Configuration\Administrative Templates. 4  Right-click Administrative
Templates, and then click Add/Remove    Templates on the shortcut
  menu.
In you see "Outlk9" in the
Current Policy Templates list,    select it, and then click
the Remove button to    remove the old
  template.
  5  Click the Add

6  Use the Look in box to locate
where you saved the updated    Outlk9.adm template. Select
the file name, and then click the    Add button to add the new

Nah,
once it's in place it works a treat - adding someone to have access to a new
type of attachment takes very little time.

It's
my fourth line of defence - after first AV check, Mail Marshal content
filtering, & second AV check. So even if something makes it's way through
all those the user will probably not have permission to access the file, not
even to forward it on to anyone else either.

"This patch is intended for users
with MS Outlook 98 / 2000 and Service Pack 2, which includes a
'security fix' (called a security feature or enhancement by Microsoft)
blocking all incoming attachments with the extensions like EXE and
LNK. The problem: you can't undo the security fix, and you won't be
able to open, save or forward (for example) a URL attachment after
installing the service pack! Therefore, I wrote the Outlook Insecurity
Patch. This patch will give you control about which file extensions
will be blocked, or not. The patch will update the outllib.dll in your
office folder and disable the security on specific extensions by your
  choice."

Free Email
Previewer/Screener For Outlook

I recently went a few rounds with Microsoft Tech Support
on the Outlook 2000 security patch which
disallows receiving certain types of
files Their response, of course, was
that there was no way to fix it, but I
COULD upgrade to Office XP to get a
version that allows me to change those settings.
No surprise, to override a Microsoft
caused issue, I just have to give them
more money.

HOWEVER, there is another solution. A handy utility
called "Chilton Preview" for Outlook
gives you a nifty preview screen that
allows you to retrieve any enclosures that Microsoft
says you cannot get. I recommend it to
anyone who has applied this patch, and
wants to get to their enclosures. You can find
it at http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Peaks/8392/

RE: Help! Locked out!

2002-01-02 Thread Simon Curtiss

Well at least when you find out who changed the password then you can arrest
them, lock them up and swallow the key - most of us ordinary IT admins would
like to be able to do that with certain users :-)

Possibly losing the company money? It's amazing how many people never retry
sending after getting an NDR, so if you don't deal with it the
contact/contract/confirmation etc may never occur.

RE: Events.exe consuming a lot of CPU, memory

You've never installed Exchange? You have to run the Microsoft Exchange
OptimiSer after the install, or changes to the hardware, or service pack
installs, or.

Of course I've never used Exchange 2000 - maybe it's not part of that
version?

cheers

RE: Antigen vs. ScanMail

2001-12-14 Thread Simon Curtiss

So do I use ISA for this - could of used my firewall instead to to block
the Mesenger/ICQ side I suppose. There was a list of ip addresses & ports
posted to the list a while back, I'll have a look for it on Monday when I'm
back in the office unless someone has posted it before me.

Night all - it's 2:15 am here in NZ and I only logged in to see if there was
an e-mail from a friend, so why I'm doing THIS I have no idea! dedication?
or stupidity?

How would I go about blocking things like this? Use an entry in the local
DNS pointing to a custom web page maybe?

RE: Events.exe consuming a lot of CPU, memory

2001-12-13 Thread Simon Curtiss

On my EX 5.5Sp3 NT4.0 Sp6a server Event.exe is using 0% CPU and 1000K of
RAM, Store is using abiout 5% and 49700K of RAM - out of a total of 57600K
of RAM.

Have you run Performance Optimiser recently? Added any new hardware?

RE: Characters being moved in messages

2001-12-10 Thread Simon Curtiss
Title: Message

I
don't have exactly this issue but something similar

If
a user with a WinTerm that has Windows CE 3.5 Sp1 as the OS and has the
colours set to 64K rather than 256, then in the preview panel area parts of the
e-mail will be invisible! If you highlight the area then you can see the text ,
as soon as you un-highlight it it disappears again. It is totally random as to
which e-mails and which area of the screen it will do it in. I ave reported it,
but not head aything back. The easy solution is to not use 64K colours (and
frankly in a WinTerm environment you don't need/want it
anyway.

We
use both Wyse & Compaq WinTerms and it's the same on both (The new Wyse 3200
terminals suck btw, the Compaq T20's are cool). I believe SP2 for Windows CE 3.5
is out but I haven't had a chance to test it yet to see if it's fixed
this.

cheers

Simon

p.s.
anyone else having problems getting to www.compaq.com? IIt's been unavailable to me
for two days & I tried www.compaq.net as
an alternative and it went to MSN?!

  being moved in messages
  Hi,

  Exchange 5.5
server running SP4. Clients are OL98, OL2000, OL2002 and Outlook
  Express.
  Has anybody else
seen messages that have characters moved around. Generally this tends to be
the first letter of a word tacked on to the back of the last
  word.

  It only happens
intermittently to about four users, out of a client base of about 500. One of
these users also intermittently gets a whole line that changes colour to lime
green after he sends it out!

  It only happens on
mail send externally and in HTML and seems to follow these users. We use
MailSweeper to scan for viruses and we have a third party, MesageLabs, that
scans our mail for viruses, Spam and Pornography. We've changed their
  profiles several times.

  I've got a call
open with Microsoft, but we don't seem to be getting very far. I wondered if
anybody out there had come across something similar before these users drive
  me nuts.

  Any help
  gratefully accepted.

   Attachments
in this message have been sweptby NAIs TVD (version 4.0.4175) for the

Why only check once a day? I run the update check every 8 hours, I'm

RE: Exch 2k and Indexing Service..

I would have thought that you definitely don't want it running. It's of no
use as your Exchange server isn't being used for anything other than
Exchange and so it's just using CPU cycles that could be put to better use
- ya know for like the SETI client ;->

MANAGING EXTRA MAILBOXES IN EXCHANGE

MANAGING EXTRA MAILBOXES IN EXCHANGE
>From time to time, I want to highlight solutions developers who really
seem to understand what people want from Outlook. One such developer is
Victor Ivanidze, whom I met while I was living in Moscow and whose web
site at http://victori.hypermart.net/ features COM add-ins for Outlook
2000 and 2002, sample forms to add header fields to Internet messages,
and various other tips.
Lately, Victor has focused on one of the stickier issues in Outlook in
an Exchange environment -- working with a secondary mailbox. As you
probably know, with proper permissions, you can open another mailbox and
see all its folders, respond to messages in its Inbox, etc. A typical
example is a Support mailbox that help desk staffers access in addition
to their own mailboxes.
The hard part comes when you want to ensure that messages sent from the
other mailbox have the right From address and are stored in the other
mailbox's Sent Items folder. I wrote an article a few years ago
(http://www.exchangeadmin.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=4855) on
various ways to meet those goals and concluded that it was easier to
abandon the shared group mailbox approach and use a public folder
instead.
Victor has breathed new life into the group mailbox approach, however,
by offering two COM add-ins that together make it possible to handle a
secondary mailbox's messages seamlessly. RightFrom is a utility that
automatically fills in the correct From address when you reply to or
forward a message in the other mailbox. The second utility, UniSent,
ensures that those replies and forwards are stored in the Sent Items
folder of the other mailbox, not in your own mailbox. It also puts items
that you delete from the group mailbox into the group mailbox's Deleted
Items folder.
Remember that, if you're implementing a group mailbox, there are two
different ways to set permissions to allow other users to send on behalf
of the mailbox. If the Exchange administrator grants Send on Behalf Of
permission to the Support mailbox, outgoing messages will show both the
actual sender and the Support mailbox. If you want to hide the actual
sender's name and address, you need to grant Send As permission to the
user's Windows account.

Seriously, look at the archives of the Sunbelt

the other week, I've got a copy but I can't find it right now. I'll see if I
can find it in the morning, it's 11:20 pm and I'm just finishing a bad

RE: IIS Lock Down tool.

2001-09-02 Thread Simon Curtiss

Well I would be very very careful, 'cos I just got bitten by this b$@%@%d.

I got an unrecoverable BSOD on my single Exchange Server and at 4pm on
Sunday and it took me 9 hours to wrestle the server back into production. No
data loss in the end - and as much as everyone hates ArcServeIT (and I'm one
of them) it saved my butt with the Disaster Recovery Option that we use.

I'm curious - does anyone who's used ArcServe 2000 still hate the product or
is this all based on the bad bad bad experiences they had with 6.5, 6.61 etc
etc etc.

I ask as I can upgrade Inoculate & Arcserve for my whole organisation for
less than $NZ 2500, or replace with Antigen & BE for about $NZ 20,000 - as
you could guess this will be pretty hard to argue through with my CFO -
Antigen in particular, as we use Mail Marshal which has all (and more) of
the content filtering that is in Antigen.

When your system is configured as an open relay, then spammers are able to
steal your resources and use them to steal other people's resources. They're

not forcing anyone to use their lists - the lists are available as a service

only. The people who use those lists have chosen not to receive mail from
open relays. They're merely protecting their own property from misguided
and/or malicious property owners/caretakers such as those who run open
relays.
You are free to ignore them, if you wish. But you must be prepared to deal
with the consequences if you do.

There is an exception to the rule (well maybe not an exception, but I can't
think of the right word) and that is that the Backoffice CAL will no longer
be available after October 1st and you will need to get CAL 'Core' packs
