The actual OU in which these users will be created is:
 ou=LatinAmerica,ou=Sales,ou=Users,ou=US,dc=example,dc=com

I also changed the priority on the LatinAmerica Recipient Policy, so
that it is is the highest-priority Policy, and selected Apply this

The actual SMTP setting for the policy is

Do I need to modify my query?

Subject: Setting up an email subdomain

For political/economic reasons, management wants to set up an email
subdomain for use by a sales rep in South America - they want the rep
to send and receive emails as r...@southamerica.example.com, instead of
 r...@example.com.

The rep will be using our Exchange server in the US via RPC/HTTP or OWA.

Am I correct in thinking that all I need to do is have our ISP update
our zone with the subdomain, add an MX record for it, then create the
Exchange mailbox and AD account, put the @southamerica.example.com
SMTP address as a secondary, then mark it as the primary SMTP address?

I've done a similar thing with a completely different domain, but not
a subdomain, so I want to make sure I cross all the i's and dot all
the t's - or something like that...

You pays your money, you takes your chances.

I see a lot of investment over the last few years at Microsoft going into
RPC/HTTP technologies and none into RPC/TCP.

RPC/HTTP on the LAN is very common.

So what is the pro of that approach over doing LB for RPC too? Keeping in mind
I’m trying to avoid client disruption if/when we do this?

I’d assumed, incorrectly probably, that using RPC over HTTP on the LAN isn’t
all that common?

If nothing else it makes a big difference in the level and cost of LB required.

Oh, you are gonna hate this one. That’s not valid. You have to do it like this:

Get-MessageTrackingLog -Server ICEXCH-H1 -Sender
r.so...@imperial.ac.ukmailto:r.so...@imperial.ac.uk -Start
[DateTime]::Parse( 15/01/2012 )

It’s a System.DateTime parameter, not a string parameter.

What’s happening is you are getting caught up in the short-cut string

The person said 'The price is a little more than what you have been quoted
elsewhere but the chances are the quote is so low because of poor quality of
the certificate.'
Price is double and only for a single domain, whereas the one I've been looking
at is for up to 5 domains!

I'm sure I remember certificatesforexchange being mentioned here so can anyone
comment on the above?
This is only being used for iPhone/HTC phone synchronisation and rare use of
OWA so I don't see any issues - or am I missing something obvious?

A potential option is a Powershell script that runs at say 7:55 and sets the
forwarding rule on and then runs at 9:05 and turns the forwarding rule off
again. Would this e-mail be coming in from outside the organization/network?

Had a user on OWA 2010 SP1 with rollup 3 v3 send an email to 4 other users
today.
Now the recipients are getting the email again every 5 minutes.
Queue viewer shows 0 messages in all queues.
Message tracking only shows the most recent copy of the email, ie it looks like
the sender only sent one time.
All users on the same server, and only one server in the system.
The sender has an ipad but didn't use it this time.
He also has a droid phone and the message id ends in @blur which might be
relevant, but am not sure. I was told he used OWA but possibly the droid is
causing this.
One of the recipients has a blackberry, but I don't think this is related but I
restarted the BESX server anyway.
I've also restarted the exchange server and shut down the users pc as he is off
today, hence why he used OWA.
Any pointers appreciated.

I'd appreciate a bit of a sanity check please.

I've gone through all the steps that I know of to de-configure my Exchange 2003
servers prior to removing them.

I've not yet removed the mailbox databases and Public Folder database though
they are empty (no mailboxes, no PF instances).

I was planning next on shutting down the 2 old servers (FE and BE) for a few
days to ensure nothing breaks, then bring them back up, remove the RGC's and
uninstall - sound sensible?

Also, prior to doing this should I follow the steps in this article:

http://exchangeserverpro.com/moving-the-public-folder-hierarchy-during-an-exchange-2007-migration

I'm a bit unclear if there are any implications with doing this whilst the 2003
servers still have their PF databases.

Thanks,
Paul

Even though we have a tiny environment (~50 mailboxes total), we have 3
companies with different domain names. Each domain has both mobile clients
and external users running Outlook anywhere. Our initial deployment of 2010
will be a single server with all roles. We intend to add a second server in
a few months, also will all roles. We don't intend to buy a load balancer
for the CAS role. We'll just repoint to the second server in an emergency.
I've combed the list archives and here is what I can come up with for what
should be on the SAN cert.

 mail.domain1.com (OWA will be mail.domain1.com/owa)
 autodiscover.domain1.com

 mail.domain2.com (OWA will be mail.domain2.com/owa)

 mail.domain3.com (OWA will be mail.domain3.com/owa)
 autodiscover.domain3.com

servername1.internaldomain.local (1st server deployed at launch)
 servername2.internaldomain.local (2nd server deployed later)

Am I missing anything? Any thoughts or comments are appreciated.

From: Oliver Marshall [mailto:oliver.marsh...@g2support.com]
Subject: Eeek. Exch2010 logs not being removed after backps

Hi,

We are using Shadowprotect here to run hourly backups of our Exchange 2010
drives. There are two drives, C and D. Database is on D, logs on C. Both are
backed up hourly using incremental image backups which Shadowprotect then
merges to make a full backup once a month (done on another machine).

However we've noticed that logs aren't being removed after the backup. All
the VSS Writers show No Error and the backups are working fine, but the logs
(lots and lots of them) are being left behind.

The application and system logs don't show anything remotely error like at
the time to say that the VSS cant do it's job or the logs cant be removed.

Any ideas how we can hunt down the cause of the problem?

Given that we are doing hourly backups I'm tempted to enable circular
logging and restart the info store then just archive/remove the logs. We
could increase the backups to once every 10 mins if we had to.

The first step in following these best practices is to set up a system to
optimize how you use Outlook 2007. It is considered best practice to have
the following: . Cached Exchange Mode turned on.

http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2007/01/15/432199.aspx

Outlook 2007 in Cached Mode is important for reducing server I/O as much as
70% over Exchange 2003. The initial mailbox sync is an expensive operation,
but over time, as the mailbox size grows, the disk subsystem burden is
shifted from the Exchange server to the Outlook client.

We have 2000+ Outlook 2007 clients with half laptops and half desktops. Are
there any considerations or side effects if we turn on Cached Exchange Mode
companywide?

RE: 2010 DAG question

2010-12-21 Thread Webster
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd638104.aspx#SoftReq

DAGs are available in both Exchange 2010 Standard Edition and Exchange 2010
Enterprise Edition. In addition, a DAG can contain a mix of servers running
Exchange 2010 Standard Edition and Exchange 2010 Enterprise Edition.

Each member of the DAG must also be running the same operating system. Exchange
2010 is supported on both the Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2
operating systems. All members of a DAG must run either Windows Server 2008 or
Windows Server 2008 R2. They can't contain a combination of both Windows Server
2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

In addition to meeting the prerequisites for installing Exchange 2010, there
are operating system requirements that must be met. DAGs use Windows Failover
Clustering technology, and as a result, they require the Enterprise version of
Windows.

 1. Have an upstream spam\av filter where the MX record points to 2. Split

I remember seeing in the past that these sort of backups and restores can

Essentially the Digicert wildcard certificates seem to get universally good
feedback as they also allow you to consolidate all your existing individual
certs and specify SAN's should you need to, however good old Godaddy are
offering wildcard certs at a crazy price where it's cheap to buy a wildcard
 and
if it did present problems just buy a UCC/SAN cert solely for our Exchange

It seems a bit of a gray area when you get to handhelds (Nokia, iPhone

You must run this command on a computer in the same domain and in the same

Subject: RE: Running /PrepareAD for new Exchange organization [Resolved]

Just for reference sake, in case it happens to anyone else creating a new
AD
 structure:

Our issue was that we have multiple sites listed under Sites and Services,
but
there aren't subnets created for each site.

So, when I ran the command, it couldn't tell what Site the new exchange
server belonged to, therefore couldn't complete the command.

Also, because of this, even after I ran the prep command on a DC, the
actual
install of Exchange from the new server failed, with the same issue, can't
tell
what Site the machine belongs to. After entering the correct subnet into
Sites and Services, and tying it to the correct Site, the install is going
just fine.

Something pretty minor, that can absolutely come back and bite ya in the
 behind.

Yeah, you want to upgrade the 97-2002 PSTs.

5400 RPM is slow; even for desktops.

But the SP2 and 4GB are good.

We are migrating away from an SCR 2007 cluster to a single vm box for our
mailbox database. We have 4 DB's and have been moving mailboxes over the
past several weeks. Our PF DB is about 40GB. When I looked at all the PF's
they had a replication of the new server, and all the stores were set to
point to the new server and everything was fine.

When I went to decommission the server I noticed that the entire PF db on
the new server was still at 0 even though everyone had it listed as their PF
for the database. I tried doing the moveallreplicas.ps1 script and waited a
day, and I see all kinds of event logs about incoming message replication ,
processing message but the new server still showing 0 messages.

What made it worse was after the script people this morning said all the PFs
were empty, so I repointed the DB to the old server and re-ran the
moveallreplicas.ps1 back to the old server they are good now, but Im not
sure of what Im missing.

Thanks for reading my long winded post J

Today, it was announced that Sunbelt Software has been acquired by GFI

and
infrastructure software solutions, both on-premise and in the cloud. View
 the press release here:
 http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Press/Releases/?id=362

This Wednesday, July 14th, GFI's CEO, Walter Scott and I will be holding a
webinar to discuss the transaction, which we invite you to attend. The
details

 Date: Wednesday, July 14, 2010
 Time: 11:30am Eastern Time

First, let me say that we're thrilled to be part of the GFI team.
Throughout
our discussions and interactions with GFI, we have been continually
impressed with their dedication to quality, customer service and superior
performance throughout the company. Both companies are similar in their
attitudes and practices with regard to customer service, product quality,
strategic vision, organizational styles and culture.

On the technology side, the acquisition allows us to expand into several
areas, which we believe are essential for us to grow as a company and
continue to provide leading-edge technologies to our partners. These areas
include vulnerability assessment, patch management, data leakage
prevention, hosted/cloud-based technologies, and MSP solutions.

No specific plans have been made yet in terms of product integration
strategies, but we are working with the GFI team to identify areas where
their technologies would complement our offerings.

In addition to the technology side, GFI provides additional resources in
terms
of capital, management expertise, systems and new markets that will
continue to propel our products and our teams to the highest level of
 achievement possible.

For the time being, both companies are hard at work, integrating the
various
sales, marketing, finance, and technology teams. Our goal is to make the
combination of the companies as seamless as possible to you, and we will
continue to provide you with updates and information as we work to
combine the organizations. For now, nothing changes in how you do business
 with Sunbelt.

We appreciate your trust in us as a partner and will continue to work hard
to
keep your loyalty and support. Please don't hesitate to reach out to your
Sunbelt representative or me personally if you have any questions or

Subject: MS Exchange 2007 - Server down

Hello to all.

Looking for some thoughts here.

We had an existing MS Exchange 2007 server that over the weekend took a dive
on us. In repairing MS Windows, it was so hosed that it performed an actual
reinstall of the OS and not a repair (approx 30+ dll files were gone). In
that, MS Exchange 2007 is not seen and does not work. The plus side is that
we had prepared last week a new MS Exchange 2007 server to migrate to and
have performed some test migrations but both servers were up.

Today being that the original server is down, we cannot migrate nor
disconnect a mailbox and reconnect to the new server. We are ready and
going to export out users PST files via the desktop and just reimport but
the issue is that they do not have a mailbox on the new server. When we try
to create a 2nd mailbox, it prompts that the user already exists. Could we
delete the user and then recreate and tie to the new server Not sure but
will be trying.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Figured that a few heads
thinking about this is better than one.

I am already a much bigger fan of 2008 R2 than 2008 R1 for the same reasons.
I'm just exceedingly hacked off that a) I can't install Citrix XenApp Server
5.0 on 2008 R2, meaning that I have to maintain some 2008 servers for the
moment, and b) that I can't summon up the guts to upgrade my AD schema to
2008 R2 because I'm paranoid that it will fsck something in Exchange 2007

2009/12/9 Jason Gurtz jasongu...@npumail.com

And just in general - my experience is that 2008 r2 feels snappier
than
 2008. But that's subjective.

Makes sense:

2008   = Vista tree
2008R2 = Win 7 tree

I'm wondering if I could upgrade a 2008 box to R2 underneath MS DPM 2007;
something tells me that would be an exceptionally bad idea.

everyone access to this mailbox. At the moment, we have not discovered a
way to do this when someone is currently connected to the mailbox.

Here is what we have found:

If someone is using Outlook 2003 (or 2007) and has been granted Full Mailbox
Access via Exchange permissions and is currently connected to the mailbox,
even after we disable the account, place a specific DENY for the Domain
Users group to Full Mailbox Access and Send As and Receive As, delete
the mailbox and run clean-mailboxdatabase on the entire database THE USER
STILL HAS ACCESS TO THE MAILBOX.

I understand that if the connected user were to disconnect and try to
reconnect, they would be denied but we need something immediate.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Hello,

I was wondering what the current thinking is of those of us
that support Exchange servers regarding hosted Exchange vs. Exchange
in-house. With all the hype out there pushing cloud computing and all of
the benefits I am not yet sold on it from a security and reliability
standpoint. Some of my concerns are based upon the stability of the hosting
company, access to data should a hosted client decide to bring the
application in-house, and cloud reliability. Even though the Internet is
reliable I can remember a number of years ago when a fire in a tunnel in
Baltimore brought down Internet service for a large number of users and many
others suffered dialup speeds for 3-5 days until the fiber was replaced. At
that time one would not think that there would be a single point of failure
that would wreck havoc as did occur.

I would like to ask for your thoughts on this subject. Is the Internet
robust and reliable enough to put your messaging server on a remote hosting
platform? What about other business critical applications?

Then that's fine - you've got a policy and affected parties are informed.

In the US, courts have gone both ways when a policy doesn't exist. Some have
said that users have a reasonable expectation of privacy and others have
denied that when using company resources. The situation is even cloudier
when you work for a public institution (public university, city council,

So... policies and C-level direction are important. :-)

Obligatory warning: I would never do this without a written letter from
C-level company management. You could be held liable for any content you see
in someone else's mailbox.

The right answer is for you to have an exchange administrator login that
is separate from your domain administrator login. Then add the exchange
administrator login to have full-control over each mailbox database. That
will automatically propagate down to each mailbox - as long as that login is
not a member of any privileged group (such as domain admins, enterprise
admins, account operators, etc.).

Subject: Permission to open all mailboxes

I would like to be able to open any users mailbox folders from Outloook and
be able to delegate permissions to give other users access to folders in
those mailboxes, for example, giving a manager read access to someones
calender. I used to be able to do this through Outlook when I was running
Exchange 2003 but not with 2007. I'm not sure how to go about setting the
perms up for this. Anyone?

James

+6 for IronPort. They will let you try it for free for 30 days, too, so you
can see if it's a fit for you.

+4 if you can effort a ironport. Go for it!

The reason for us to buy a PineApp instead of a Ironport was the price.

Ironport is better but much more expensive.

Although we are quite satisfied with our Pineapp.

RE: Citrix Receiver for iPhone

From: Sean Martin [mailto:seanmarti...@gmail.com]
Subject: OT: Citrix Receiver for iPhone

Has anyone played with the Citrix Receiver for the iPhone? What are your
thoughts? Is it a viable remote access solution? Does it support RSA yet?

I'm asking more out of curiousity than anything else, so you can respond to
me directly if desired. We don't have 3G up in Anchorage currently (coming
soon!) so it's not worth testing just yet. Thanks!

It was a hit last week at the Citrix Summit/Synergy conferences.

Subject: RE: Move OAB to web based distribution to uninstall ex2007

this is one of those things where i need to write a blog post...there may
already be an article about it on msexchange.org.

short answer: check out get-publicfolderstatistics - if it doesn't know
about the folder, then you can safely delete it. if it DOES know about the
folder, deleting it would be a no-no.

Someone else may have written about it but NO ONE else can explain things
the way you do. So go ahead and write your own blog post on this subject.

You could delete it using ADSIEDIT. Not elegant but effective!

For clarification, are you suggesting that the count be under 5,000
for inbox and subfolders, or just the inbox? I am not sure if those
are calculated together since you can have top level folders outside
 the inbox also

IIRC, MBS in a post a couple of months ago referred to the Inbox, Sent Items
and Deleted items as the ones that should be under a certain item count.

Moving HT role to new server

2009-03-17 Thread Webster
Exchange 2007 SP1 UR6

Server 2003 x64

CAS is on one server

HT/MB is on another server

Need to move HT role to CAS server.

Is it as simple as installing the HT role on the CAS server and then
uninstalling it from the MB server?

Thanks

RE: Isa 2006 with Exchange 2007 and RSA SecurID tokens

2009-03-10 Thread Webster
From: Davies,Matt [mailto:mdav...@generalatlantic.com]
Subject: Isa 2006 with Exchange 2007 and RSA SecurID tokens

Hi everyone,

My Google skills see to be failing me totally today. I have a ISA server
which is publishing OWA on a exchange 2007 CAS server with all the mailboxes
on a exchange 2003 backend server.

The rule works fine until I enable RSA authentication, but after entering
username and RSA details the RSA authentication succeeds, but when it
redirects to owa URL, we get a Error Code: 403 Forbidden. The server denied
the specified Uniform Resource Locator (URL). Contact the server
administrator. (12202)

Some sites mention using Kerberos constrained Delegation which I have
believe I have also setup. But no matter what I try, it still doesn't work.

Does anyone either have any ideas on how to get this to work, or can point
me in the direction of some useful resources.

Have you checked over at ISASERVER.org?

Exchange 2007 HT/CAS and Server 08 Web Edition

2009-03-02 Thread Webster
According to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996719.aspx,
Server 2008 Web Edition is NOT a recommended OS for Exch 07. I have someone
who insists that it is a supported OS and that you can install the HT and or
CAS roles on 08 Web Edition. My viewpoint is, if it is not on that page, we
should not be recommending it to a customer.

Just wanted to get your thoughts on the matter.

Thanks
