I want. However, in this day of dot-com crashes and online auctions, I think
people are resorting to building their own pc's for the experience rather
than to save money. That's the only reason I want to try it.

It's the way to learn - why spend thousands on a course, when you can setup
2 pc's, basic networking, learn a new O/S and a New Exchange Product!

Worked for me. Enjoy it!

I've got some an old hub I can use. The only cost I will have is a PC to be

Actually, its really easy - you could use a cross-over cable and connect to
the 2 PC's, or simply get a small 4-port hub, network cables and just attach
2 Pc's and install NT / Win2k Server. For test reasons, it's the way to
start, especially if you cannot justify the cost of a server (Not everyone
can!)

If you need any help, please let me know

monitoring this list is pretty good learning material...but it's all pretty
useless and boring unless you can set yourself a network up with an exchange
server. When I was learning (well, when I started...If you've finished
learning, why are you here?) I set one up at home...all the users were
either me, my girlfriend, or my cat, so if I crashed it in the name of
education it wasn't a big deal.

Lee / Tim,

What I have done is setup a test lab, using several servers, and 2 PC's and
install / configure the products I wish to learn.

I also do this with help from books for the product, TechNet, online help
and Microsoft White papers! I am learning new things about exchange all the
time (especially 2k), and this list is on most occasions helpful and provide
good insight.

But there is nothing better than getting hands on experience yourself. Even

Actually, its really easy - you could use a cross-over cable and connect to
the 2 PC's, or simply get a small 4-port hub, network cables and just attach
2 Pc's and install NT / Win2k Server. For test reasons, it's the way to
start, especially if you cannot justify the cost of a server (Not everyone
can!)

Even
if you cannot afford some servers, just network 2 PC's and play around!

2001-10-25 Thread Ellery July

Stay on the list.

Watch what your admins are doing. Second guess them (not to their face) with
questions to this list. Lots of smart people here and there are usually a
couple of ways to solve problem.

When you see a problem they are having put it to the list and then see what
they come up with. We (people on the list) are always right.

Go to http://www.win2000mag.com/ and read the stuff on exchange. It is
usually a quick read 2-4 pages but informative. About 50% of the stuff in
there either starts on this list or gets discussed on this list - Antivirus
API, Instant Messaging to name a couple.

Go to Microsoft online seminars. Listen to all the exchange stuff which
interests you. There are hours of useless stuff but also hours of good
stuff.

Lastly, see if they can give you more small stuff to control like making
sure the exchange antivirus is updated and working or assisting with
restore/disaster training.

I tried to give you the free stuff obviously there are books, classes, and
setting up you own exchange system at home.

I will keep listening to this list and hopefully manage to make myself a
small network to learn from. I've never thought of making a network before
but I really like the sound of it.

Thanks again.

Even
if you cannot afford some servers, just network 2 PC's and play around!

monitoring this list is pretty good learning material...but it's all pretty
useless and boring unless you can set yourself a network up with an exchange
server. When I was learning (well, when I started...If you've finished
learning, why are you here?) I set one up at home...all the users were
either me, my girlfriend, or my cat, so if I crashed it in the name of
education it wasn't a big deal.

Can't really help much more than that! I never used booksI let

clients. Does anybody know of a good source to learn about Exchange server
and admin on the web.

Thanks

Actually, its really easy - you could use a cross-over cable and connect to
the 2 PC's, or simply get a small 4-port hub, network cables and just attach
2 Pc's and install NT / Win2k Server. For test reasons, it's the way to
start, especially if you cannot justify the cost of a server (Not everyone
can!)

Even
if you cannot afford some servers, just network 2 PC's and play around!

What spec would you recommend for a server to run:
Windows 2000 Advanced server
Exchange 2000 server enterprise edition

I was thinking...

SERVER: AMD Athlon 1Ghz, 20GB IDE HD, 256 MB RAM machine would do the trick.
WORKSTATION: Higher spec for actual use and probably a few games.
NETWORK: 8 Port 10/100 hub

A bit over the top perhaps but if i'm investing my own money I would like to
be able to use it for a long time.

Any suggestions, or is there anything I have missed, please let me know.

Also...as I said before i'm new to Exchange. What mail service would you use
to test exchange server with? Would I need to register a domain and have it
hosted for my mail or can I use a regular ISP's mail service?

Thankyou in advance for all your help.

Lee

Lee Actually, its really easy -
you could use a cross-over cable and connect to the 2 PC's, or simply get a small 4-port hub, network cables and
just attach 2 Pc's and install NT / Win2k Server.
For test reasons, it's the way to start,
especially if you cannot justify the cost of a server (Not everyone
  can!)

Of course, doesn't everyone. Although I'm using bubble memory. I use the bubble nest from my Betta.

Even
if you cannot afford some servers, just network 2 PC's and play around!
