Can you post the exact error? Are you doing store level backups or mailbox
level (brick level) backups?

If you are running Ent Ed, the simplest solution would probably be to create a
new mailstore and move the mailboxes over to it and then delete the corrupted
store.

That happened to us. We created a new store, moved the mailboxes and that
fixed the errors in BE.

Yes. On the same machine. Not required though. If you have another Exchange
2003 server in the same site you can create the store there as well.
Apparently it's the moving of mailboxes from one store to another
effectively repairs.

Just realize that if you create it on the same server you'll have double the

triples until you have done a successful B/U! Correct me if I'm wrong, just

Just realize that if you create it on the same server you'll have double the
store size until you delete the original one! Actually I think it actually
triples until you have done a successful B/U! Correct me if I'm wrong, just
make sure you have the disk space.

Yes. On the same machine. Not required though. If you have another Exchange
2003 server in the same site you can create the store there as well.
Apparently it's the moving of mailboxes from one store to another effectively
repairs.

So, is there some clear concise instructions somewhere to do this, like does

A few quick points as I'm no Master of exchange like MBS, Lefkovics,
Blackstone, et al
Exchange on a DC = Very BAD!
You can move mailboxes without dismounting the DB but the users involved will
not have access during the move.
Creating a new DB and moving the mailboxes into it are the preferred way to
regain white space but not really necessary unless you have a huge amount
(25%+) of whitespace (event 1221 will tell you what is there).
The movement MIGHT cure the corruption issue, nothing to lose but time.

I'm no expert, lots of people here have lots more experience than I do!
However I did the same as you are attempting last May, however in an Exchange 7
environment.
No downtime required, simply add the additional store make sure it's mounted,
start moving users, live is ok. You can take your time and move them at your
leisure. Ones all users are moved, you can dismount and delete the old store.

You do what you have to do and of course Microsoft does this in SBS BUT...
Single point of failure for your domain - not good! Recovery of AD and Exchange
in the same disaster - fill in your own horror story.
Both Exchange and Active Directory are based on resource hungry databases, and
are serving users in time critical functions. Both systems can use large
amounts of RAM; disk capacity and bandwidth; and processor time. If these
processes have to compete for those resources then poor performance is your
most likely outcome.
Any DC that runs Exchange needs to be a Global Catalogue server. If you haven't
made your Sharepoint box a GC as well you need to consider it as a very
important move.
There are potential security issues (especially if you publish OWA) but that
should do for now.

RE: Mail store issues

2009-08-17 Thread Bill Songstad (WCUL)
Looks like some advice was designed for a larger enterprise.

See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283283

You may need to create a new temporary server. Do a swing migration, delete
the corrupt store and swing back.

OK, I created a new storage group, I then tried to create a new store in it,

This Storage group already contains the maximum number of stores allowed.

No, moving mailboxes to a new store does not require the databases to be
offline or dismounted. Use the Exchange Mailbox Move Wizard, the databases must
be online for this to be successful.

You guys crack me up, any way thanks for the heads up, I have a store size of
about 23 GB and 124 GB free, so I think I am OK there.

So, is there some clear concise instructions somewhere to do this, like does
the store need to be off-line, which is what I am guessing.

And any ballpark on how long it takes?

Please bear with me, I was sent to a 2 day Exchange Server seminar and handed

Just realize that if you create it on the same server you'll have double the

make sure you have the disk space.

Yes. On the same machine. Not required though. If you have another Exchange
2003 server in the same site you can create the store there as well.
Apparently it's the moving of mailboxes from one store to another effectively
repairs.

   - Open ESM navigate to "First Storage Group" or whatever you named it.
Right click on "First Storage Group" and chose New then Mailbox Store. Name
it something and chose it's location via the "Database" tab. THe new store
will mount in a few moments.
