Mail store issues
Hello, I am running Ex 2003 on box that only run AD and is the PDC. Since about 2 months ago, my backup havefaile but the byte counts is still good. The error says that there is corruption in the mail store. A re there utilities that I can run to clean this up? Thank You ~Doug Rooney Sonoma Tilemakers IT Manager 7750 Bell Rd. RE: Mail store issues
Can you post the exact error? Are you doing store level backups or mailbox level (brick level) backups? If you are running Ent Ed, the simplest solution would probably be to create a new mailstore and move the mailboxes over to it and then delete the corrupted store. Re: Mail store issues
+1 That happened to us. We created a new store, moved the mailboxes and that fixed the errors in BE. On Fri, Aug 14, 2009 at 10:00 AM, Martin Blackstone wrote: > Can you post the exact error? Try creating a new store. Move all the mailboxes to the new store and see if that clears up the corruption problem. Cheers. Yes. On the same machine. Not required though. If you have another Exchange 2003 server in the same site you can create the store there as well. Apparently it's the moving of mailboxes from one store to another effectively repairs. Cheers. Just realize that if you create it on the same server you'll have double the store size until you delete the original one! Actually I think it actually triples until you have done a successful B/U! A few quick points as I'm no Master of exchange like MBS, Lefkovics, Blackstone, et al Exchange on a DC = Very BAD! You can move mailboxes without dismounting the DB but the users involved will not have access during the move. Creating a new DB and moving the mailboxes into it are the preferred way to regain white space but not really necessary unless you have a huge amount (25%+) of whitespace (event 1221 will tell you what is there). I'm no expert, lots of people here have lots more experience than I do! However I did the same as you are attempting last May, however in an Exchange 7 environment. No downtime required, simply add the additional store make sure it's mounted, start moving users, live is ok. You can take your time and move them at your leisure. Ones all users are moved, you can dismount and delete the old store. ___ Stefan Jafs From: Doug Rooney [mailto:d...@sonomatilemakers.com] Sent: Monday, August 17, 2009 4:38 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Mail store issues So interesting, as soon as I admit that I am new to this game, no replies. No, moving mailboxes to a new store does not require the databases to be offline or dismounted. Use the Exchange Mailbox Move Wizard, the databases must be online for this to be successful. Misc. RE: Mail store issues
You do what you have to do and of course Microsoft does this in SBS BUT... Single point of failure for your domain - not good! Recovery of AD and Exchange in the same disaster - fill in your own horror story. Both Exchange and Active Directory are based on resource hungry databases, and are serving users in time critical functions. Both systems can use large amounts of RAM; disk capacity and bandwidth; and processor time. If these processes have to compete for those resources then poor performance is your most likely outcome. Any DC that runs Exchange needs to be a Global Catalogue server. If you haven't made your Sharepoint box a GC as well you need to consider it as a very important move. There are potential security issues (especially if you publish OWA) but that should do for now. John W. So, is there some clear concise instructions somewhere to do this, like does the store need to be off-line, which is what I am guessing. And any ballpark on how long it takes? Please bear with me, I was sent to a 2 day Exchange Server seminar and handed the job as Exchange Admin, so I am kinda green still. Thank You ~Doug Rooney Sonoma Tilemakers IT Manager 7750 Bell Rd. Actually I think it actually triples until you have done a successful B/U! Correct me if I'm wrong, just make sure you have the disk space. ___ Stefan Jafs From: Stephan Barr [mailto:stephanbarr.li...@gmail.com] Sent: Friday, August 14, 2009 1:35 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Re: Mail store issues Yes. On the same machine. Not required though. If you have another Exchange 2003 server in the same site you can create the store there as well. Apparently it's the moving of mailboxes from one store to another effectively repairs. Cheers. Right click on "First Storage Group" and chose New then Mailbox Store. Name it something and chose it's location via the "Database" tab. THe new store will mount in a few moments.
