Palm Pilot Devices

2001-12-11 Thread John Riley

This is a bit off topic, but the company president is looking to buy a
hand held electronic scheduler/calendar. He will be using Outlook 2000 on
his desktop and would like something that will interface with OL 2000. I
would appreciate any suggestions from the list, since I am not
experienced in the Palm Pilot technology.

Thanks in advance,

JRiley

Pocket PC is a NASA Skunkworks device compared to a Palm.

BUT:  Pocket PC is heavier, battery life is far shorter.  If he is only doing simple stuff (text email) Palm might be the way to go.

Pocket PC Native:

Word
Outlook

RE: Palm Pilot Devices

2001-12-11 Thread Ellery July

Well I looked at these for organizational use and let me first state we
ended up Compaq 1500 then 3645 B/W PocketPC but I use a Jornada for myself.

The difference between B/W Pocket and palms are not that great. If all you
want is a portable outlook then either will work OK. You can get Palm
software to read work/excel docs.

The big thing is what other software do you want to use or need. Palm does
have a lot more software and getting something from Handspring will enable
your boss to do some very cool stuff.

If color is important (which is it to lots of people) then PocketPC is the
only way to go.

PocketPC cost more then Palms. Interesting, my observations both will not
sync about the same number of times.

Lastly stay away from Blackberry unless your boss only travels to major
cities (on east coast or west coast) and does not want to use a cell phone.

Title: RE: Palm Pilot Devices

hmmm...sorry for your bad experience.
I've
never used one to initiate a meeting request (fortunately I don't go to many
meetings) but many of my users have done so without problems.  Their
tech-support has been relatively good on the few occasions I've had to
call.

We
have users in San Francisco, Baltimore, and NYC with no reported coverage
problems, of course those are three pretty major cities.  I suppose it
would be important to find out what the coverage is like in the area you want to
use it, pretty much the same as you would for a cell phone.  I believe
Blackberry uses Cingular Cellular's (formerly Bell South)
network.

Monthly cost seemed pretty straightforward to me.

To
each his own!  I'm also a big fan of the PocketPC 2002 (I like the built-in
VPN).

  We

hmmm...sorry for your bad experience.
I've never used one to initiate a meeting request (fortunately I don't go
to many meetings) but many of my users have done so without problems.
Their tech-support has been relatively good on the few occasions I've had
to call.

We have users in San Francisco, Baltimore, and NYC with no reported
coverage problems, of course those are three pretty major cities. I
suppose it would be important to find out what the coverage is like in the
area you want to use it, pretty much the same as you would for a cell
phone. I believe Blackberry uses Cingular Cellular's (formerly Bell South)
network.

Monthly cost seemed pretty straightforward to me.

To each his own! I'm also a big fan of the PocketPC 2002 (I like the
built-in VPN).

I tried to initiate meeting requests and the BB people told me that
they were still working on it - yet sold me the product knowing I
needed that. They also lied to me about coverage area and monthly

 what I saw at MAC).

What about a Blackberry? He can carry a fully
functional copy of his Outlook with him.

  We
have users in San Francisco, Baltimore, and NYC with no reported coverage
problems, of course those are three pretty major cities.  I suppose it
would be important to find out what the coverage is like in the area you want
to use it, pretty much the same as you would for a cell phone.  I believe
Blackberry uses Cingular Cellular's (formerly Bell South)
  network.

Monthly cost seemed pretty straightforward to me.

  To
each his own!  I'm also a big fan of the PocketPC 2002 (I like the
  built-in VPN).

Only
reason I didn't make a firm stance on Pocket PC 2002 was that Blackberry has the
"Push" technology.  Executive staff demanded that they were pushed hot
messages immediately.  With the Pocket PC and VPN they would have to
connect and check mail.

Title: RE: Palm Pilot Devices

You'll be just fine.  the BB is certainly not
a pocket pc.  but it is a damn cool pager.  and good for testing email
when on site with a client.  one word of caution set them to vibrate so
they don't beep.  And don't pull the quick draw routine with it, when
talking to others.  For some reason it really seems to piss off a lot of
people.  the best part is you can have secure communication from BB to BB
if you use their pin # instead of the exchange server.  It's good when
you're pissed at the boss. or sending dirty jokes to coworkers.  I was very
happy with the performance when I had to use one.

  hmmm...sorry for your bad experience.
  I've
never used one to initiate a meeting request (fortunately I don't go to many

  We
have users in San Francisco, Baltimore, and NYC with no reported coverage
problems, of course those are three pretty major cities.  I suppose it
would be important to find out what the coverage is like in the area you want
to use it, pretty much the same as you would for a cell phone.  I believe
Blackberry uses Cingular Cellular's (formerly Bell South)
  network.

Monthly cost seemed pretty straightforward to me.

Sure...with the Wireless Calendar conduit in version 2.1 (I
believe) of the client software you can respond to meeting requests
  and update your calendar.

I agree with Robert's assessment of Palm and Pocket PC
(Pocket PC 2002 looks pretty sweet from what I saw at
  MAC).

What about a Blackberry?  He can carry a fully
functional copy of his Outlook with him.

  Only
reason I didn't make a firm stance on Pocket PC 2002 was that Blackberry has
the "Push" technology.  Executive staff demanded that they were pushed
hot messages immediately.  With the Pocket PC and VPN they would have to
  connect and check mail.

No I mean create a meeting request.

Either way I have used a Blackberry and frankly hate then. The
only tech item I have come to hate. They are being sold via lots of

My biggest problem with palm is the sync software was a pain to setup on
a secured Win2k workstation. You have to have admin privilages to
install, as it should be, but then you have to move shortcuts and other
stuff to the All Users profile. I have moved everyone I could off of
Palm and onto PocketPC's. ActiveSync is much more Win2k friendly. You
just install it and most of the time it works. I have had issues with
USB Sync cradles but I haven't had any complaints from my users in a
long time.

experienced in the Palm Pilot technology.

Thanks in advance,

Title: RE: Palm Pilot Devices

The Blackberry is a great, easy to use, simple to
understand tool for sales drones and the like.  I don't think I would
put it in the same class as a pocket PC, for most of the reasons spelled out in
this thread.  It is not as multi-functional as a PocketPC, it is really only designed to receive wireless
email.  The fact that the messages are
pushed to it is a big plus for some of the more technology-challenged users I
have (those that have to put "lunch" on their calendar to remind them to
eat).

Is it the right tool to
admin your network while sitting on a lounge chair on the beach in Maui?,
no.  Will it deliver email and meeting requests to the VP of sales
while he's on the 12th fairway during a "business meeting"?,
absolutely.

I've got an BB
server with about 20 users, which we've been running for about 18 months now -
please feel free to pm me if you have any questions when you get
it.
