Just an FYI, but Sunbelt hosts a Mac-NT list that specifically is about
running Macs in an NT/2000 environment:
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/mac-nt-list_charter.htm

Maybe someone there has dealt with these issues and could be of some help.
Just an idea...

I too
am responsible for a handful of Macs in an NT world...

Things
worked great with Exchange and the macs for years. One day, nada. I
swear I changed NOTHING. And I'm the only one who would have. I
added the host entries. No help. Worked with MS PSS.
Nothing. The refunded the calls even. For sg, I built another
test server on a PC. Guess what. Worked FINE!!! I've checked,
and rechecked everything. There is NO difference between these
boxes. They connect to one, but not the other. I just learned to
live with it...

Title: RE: Exchange 5.5 troubles with Mac's

Try..

If a local Mac hosts file is used, a CNAME and A record must be entered.
"Hosts" file is located in the "System folder" by default (and should be located
in the System sub-directory to use with MacTCP). Mac hosts file format:

Exchange server name CNAME IP domain name
IP domain name A corresponding IP
  address
For Example:
EXCH1 CNAME exch1.business.com. exch1.business.com. A
  157.54.16.157
NOTE : If the Exchange Server name resolves to a name other than the
name in the hosts file, change the Exchange Server name in the hosts file to
match the resolved name. If the user is not sure about the Internet Protocol
(IP) domain name, they can run IPConfig at a command prompt on the server and
find the domain suffix. The IP domain name should consist of the server name
with the domain suffix (as in the example above). All domain names should end
with a period (or dot).

Using the earlier example, create hosts files.
Navigate to Apple (menu), Control Panels , and then
  TCP/IP
Navigate to Edit (menu), and then User Mode . Select
Advanced , and click OK .
Click Select Hosts File ; highlight the hosts file already created,
  and then click Open .
Close the TCP/IP Control Panel, and then click Save when prompted.

  Restart the computer.

Seems like it can't authenticate with the DOmain controller, are you using

  Are you running NT
4.0 or W2K? Windows 2000's Mac support is way better than it was in NT
  4.0.

  Here is a

A Macintosh on an NT network isn't a happy thing.. but
for the most partit does work. We have a few diehards that will
NOT swtich to PC, so they suffer a bit. If anyone's ever been able to get
the Mac's to dial in and retrieve mail I'd love to know
how.

I can make it dial in and it seems to connect and stay
connected to the server, but that's the extent of it. I can't connect to the

You
don't need SFM on the Exchange Box (unless its your only server and you host mac
shares on the server).
If you
run a local DNS server then make sure the mac can resolve the DNS name of the
Exchange server. You might need to go into the TCP/IP control panel and add your
"domain.com" to the additional search domains.

RE: Exchange 5.5 troubles with Mac's

2002-01-08 Thread Dennis Atherton

We have 130 MACs (and 280 PCs) running against our Exchange Server - and
dialing in and connecting with no problem.

Brent was right - AppleTalk and Services for Mac need to be running. Even
though they both talk TCP/IP, Apples need to initially talk AppleTalk to
make the first identity connection, and then they transfer info TCP/IP.

Dialing in using a Shiva - Works OK.
Connecting over Internet using NT4 and WIN2K RAS servers VPN - Apples need
to use a tunnelbuilder client, and have full connectivity.

I have an Exchange 5.5 SP4 server that works fine with
the win2k machines on my network, but is just starting to have
problems with some macs. I setup 5 macs on my network to use the
server and it was working fine for a day and a half, but now when they
go to open outlook 8.2 on their Mac, it asks for the login info, but
then errors out saying they have network issues and to talk to your
administrator. I am at a lost, as I am not a Mac expert.
The macs are able to access network resources as well as the
  internet. Any ideas?

Unfortunately Small Business Server 4.5 forces you to have it all
in one box, and our Mac share is located on the same server as our Exchange
Server.

  You
don't need SFM on the Exchange Box (unless its your only server and you host
  mac shares on the server).
  If
you run a local DNS server then make sure the mac can resolve the DNS name of
the Exchange server. You might need to go into the TCP/IP control panel and
add your "domain.com" to the additional search domains.

The

We have 130 MACs (and 280 PCs) running against our Exchange Server - and
dialing in and connecting with no problem.

Brent was right - AppleTalk and Services for Mac need to be running. Even
though they both talk TCP/IP, Apples need to initially talk AppleTalk to
make the first identity connection, and then they transfer info TCP/IP.

Dialing in using a Shiva - Works OK.
Connecting over Internet using NT4 and WIN2K RAS servers VPN - Apples need
to use a tunnelbuilder client, and have full connectivity.
